The woman that plays Moses' mother was so pretty that the directors asked for her permission to change the face of the animated character to match her real one. Jochobed (his mother) in the movie is a straight up portrait of her voice actor.

About the plagues/death of the first born:
They don’t show it (because it would have taken way to long to convey in a movie) but after EVERY plague Moses went and tried to get Pharaoh to let them go, warning him about what the next plague would be. And Pharaoh would say ok, but then go back on his word and say no again. He was told EXACTLY what the consequences would be if he didn’t let them go and CHOSE to still not release them. Including the death of the first born.
And prior to the death of the first born, everyone was told that if they did as God said and used the lamb blood on the doorframe and followed the instructions that they would be safe, including the Egyptian people. And most of them chose not to. Some probably did follow the instructions and didn’t lose their children.
God gives everyone the free will to make their own choices. He will warn people about it but it is up to them to heed the warning. Unfortunately, Pharaoh chose not to listen and his choices led to bad things happening to his people, as is the case when ANY political leader makes bad choices. That is not God’s fault or choice or purpose.

Yep everyone who folled the instructions even if they didn't believe was safe.from the death of the firstborn. And some Egyptians joined them. Also after they left people did return to Egypt. And they weren't slaves like it was shown in the movie. And Moses didn't go down the river. He was placed in a basket and put where the woman of the palace went to bathe in the river with his sister watching over him .And his own mother was his wet nurse and helped raise him when he was young because his sister was sent to go get a wet nurse.

Couple of details I like about the sneks.
    1. When Moses’ staff becomes a snake, we can clearly see it happen. When the priests do the same thing, there’s a blinding flash and no visible transformation, implying they simply chucked the sticks away and grabbed the snakes while everyone was blinded.
    2. At the climax of the song, Moses’ snake fights and eats the other two. The symbolism goes without saying.

The scene with parting the red sea alone took two years to make. Something like that had never been done before. I saw it in theatres in 1998, and an audible gasp rose up from the audience when we all saw that. This movie came after "Antz," which didn't do well, and all of a sudden, there was a lot of pressure on "Prince of Egypt" to be great, which is why Dreamworks threw everything and the kitchen sink into the making of this movie. So glad you watched it!

To answer your questions at the end. Yes, the movie took a lot of liberties to make the story a better movie. The story they told was surprisingly accurate though. They did change some things and fill in blanks on a few other things where the Bible doesn't say what happened. Historians do know that Moses would not have been treated as a true prince and ancient Hebrew writings say that he had a really bad stutter, suggesting a lot of bullying growing up. Also in the real story, his sister approached the queen when she found Moses and suggested she go get 'a Hebrew woman' to serve as his nurse, to which she agreed. The sister then went and got their mother so Moses was at least partially raised by his real mom. He would not have been a prince. He would basically have been the queen's pity project. Not a great way to grow up. This is why he felt no loyalty to Egypt and just killed a guard one day to try to show his people he was really one of them.

"He has the same hairstyle as Rameses when he was a kid."
Okay so ancient Egyptian hairstyles! This is really interesting to me...the way people wore their hair in ancient Egypt was a symbol of their station in life. That hairstyle is referred to by modern egyptologists as "the sidelock of youth." It is depicted exclusively on royal children. So it's interesting that Rameses still had it as an adult before he became became Prince Regent. I think that says a lot about how his father viewed him.
Also, Egyptian royals would wear wigs made of other people's hair as a symbol of their absolute authority over them. The men would shave their heads but the women wore the wigs over their own hair.

  • @thenoremac2685
    @thenoremac2685 2 года назад +66

    Okay, essay time!
This movie is based off of the first half-or-so of the book of Exodus in the Bible, and it leaves a lot of interesting details out for the sake of the narrative. I'll explain a few highlights...
The reason the Hebrews were enslaved is because the Egyptians at the time were afraid of them. Though their ancestor, Joseph, was a national hero to Egypt, a Pharaoh rose to power (some scholars believe that it might have been a foreign regime change) that looked at the Hebrews and saw a rapidly growing and successful ethnic group that would not confirm to their culture. They first tried to work them to exhaustion, but that didn't work so they decided to kill all the newborn boys - with limited success.
Moses was actually adopted by one of Pharaoh's daughters, and she sent for a Hebrew woman to be a nursemaid to Moses. This woman ended up being his birth mother, so they got to reunite! Tradition says that Moses grew up to be a general of the Egyptian army and became an advocate for the rights of the Hebrews.
Third, Moses actually spent forty years living in the land of Midian. By the time he returned to Egypt, he had two full-grown sons. He also "convinced" God to have Aaron meet him halfway and act as his translator for the Egyptians. The book says Moses was "slow of speech and slow of tongue" and some people interpret that to mean he either had a speech impediment or he hadn't spoken Egyptian in so long that he had forgotten how.
Fourth, the Ten Plagues can be... controversial for someone that lacks context for everything else of what was going on and the overall character of God. Each of the plagues mirrored a deity in the Egyptian pantheon. He, in a symbolic way, was killing each of their gods and proving His sovereignty. Pharaoh also had numerous opportunities to stop the plagues and allow the Hebrews to leave. There were even a couple times where he politely asked Moses to stop them and that they could go, but when the coast was clear changed his mind. He hardened his own heart out of pride, and so the suffering of Egypt was on his shoulders. After a certain point God turned him into an object lesson to show the whole world that He was God, they are not, and He alone was in charge.
As for the plague of the first born... There can be an argument to be made that it was retribution for the Egyptians killing the Hebrew children decades prior. However, one important detail was that the plague was avoidable for *everyone*. Anyone could put the lamb's blood on their doorpost, and the only reason they didn't was because even after all the other plagues they still didn't believe. Every family that trusted God's command to cover their door with the blood was passed over (as an aside, the original connotation of that phrase is the same that describes a mother hen passing her wings over her chicks to protect them) and was saved.
After everything was done, the Hebrews were all but kicked out of Egypt. Some, who were profitable Egyptian citizens, were practically dragged out kicking and screaming. There were also non-Hebrews that went with them, including Egyptians and former slaves of other ethnicities.
As for why God allowed this? Well... I found an interesting explanation from a scholar I follow. The Hebrews originally came to Egypt to escape a famine when they were just a couple hundred people, and when they left they were well over a million. God sent them to Egypt to "gestate" if you will, like a child in the womb. However, if a child stays in the womb for too long they will die just as surely as they would if they were taken out too early. Likewise, if the Hebrews stayed in Egypt for too long then they would have assimilated into their culture and lost their identity. Thus God allowed a Pharaoh to come to power that would force them out, reinvigorate their cultural and religious identity, and they would return to Canaan to claim their inheritance.
God would rather no one perish, and He gives a path to anyone who will listen. He also makes plans that span thousands of years and are difficult for us to grasp except in maybe hindsight.
Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.

Love this take! Also, as an addendum, you noted that each of the plagues was in response to the Egyptian gods and a show of force that they were nothing compared to God. In that sense, since the Egyptian Pharaohs all considered themselves as akin to a god, the death of the firstborn was a direct challenge to them as "gods" who had previously taken the lives and deaths of Hebrew babies into their own hands.

In terms of the plague with the first born. One of the more common renditions of the story tells that God didn't actually decide to do this, Rameses did. God told Moses that the last plague will basically be Rameses' choice. When he goes to Rameses the last time Rameses says that he is going to have another purge, much larger than the one his father did, to kill all of the firstborn Hebrew slaves. So, by his own choice, the first born of all his own people were killed instead in the last plague as a form of what you do unto us will come back unto you.

That's accurate to my knowledge! So biblically, Moses always knew he was a Hebrew. I've also heard people talk about how Egyptian deities are often represented in nature (like the sun, sky, rivers) so the princess who adopted Moses literally meant the the 'gods' brought Moses because the river brought him to her. Also, there's no mention of Moses having a brother so the princess could've easily been praying for a son and then a son appears in the river!

Yeah, somethings in scriptures were different from this movie, like the last half being when Moses was WAY older.
Of note about the Egyptians all suffering, the scriptures include that a large group committing sin leads to equal justice. Even the Hebrews were not above it, with a large group commuting a sin that lead to them having to wait an extra 40 years.
Americans are quick to say we put a man on the moon or beat Hitler, but we say that only the bad people took land from natives, as an example for how foreign the concept of equal justice is for some people.
There’s also the fact that the Hebrews had to suffer a similar punishment from Egypt, as well as the fact that God gave him several other chances that were far less harmful.
The Egyptians were also being ungrateful considering Joeseph (who stars in this movie’s dtv prequel) was the reason they lived passed a horrible famine.

The voice acting talent in this movie is phenomenal, but I always have to pay special tribute to Michelle Pfeiffer, the only one with a major part who did both the speaking and singing voices (for Tzipporah).
You’re not supposed to take the priest-magicians seriously; “Playing with the Big Boys Now” has a comic twist to it because the audience knows they’re frauds. But there’s a cover version of this on RUclips that’s truly intimidating: ruclips.net/video/gqlNY5iX-nA/видео.html .
“When You Believe” is the hit single from this movie, but “The Plagues” is the most powerful song. When they tried to turn this into a stage musical, one of the biggest failures was that they messed with that song.
28:30 Here is the biggest difference between this movie and the cast-of-thousands live-action epic “The Ten Commandments.” Moses and Ramses always hated each other in the other version (there’s no actual discussion of this in the Torah, so the story can be interpreted either way) but when Ramses’ son and all the other Egyptian first-born sons die, Charlton Heston’s Moses walks off-screen chanting and praising God’s deliverance of the Hebrews from Egypt. This Moses breaks down and weeps for everything he’s had to do and witness to achieve that deliverance.

Considering all the murder and violence Hebrew children that age had gone through thus far it was done as a last resort to establish equilibrium so that the pharaoh would know pain. I think people also forget that Ramases literally says he would be carrying out a second genocide of the Hebrew people, and it would not have been nice and painless the way Gods smiting was. This was quite honestly the only option.

Not really ..if you read the story Egyptians had the option with the blood of the lamb, their first born kids would have been spared too. Also after each plague Moses went back to the Pharaoh to ask for the release of his people and warned him if he doesnt allow them to leave the next disaster will be worse. And the Pharaoh always went back on his word and kept them there.
Also if you take into account that God pretty much knows everything because he is outside of time he used the Pharaoh for the "story". Since people have free will but God knows what will happen he knew that the Pharaoh wont let the slaves go ..which gave the opportunity to dish out some justice and show the power of God.
And for context Egypt did some pretty bad things ..just like some other places that ended up destroyed. People tend to not take into account that in these stories in the Bible when God actually decided to destroy some city that city showed some pretty bad behavior for decades or centuries ..and even then God was willing to listen to ppl who tried to bargain with him lowering requirement to spare cities :D
God often called wrathful etc. but in the context he is actually waaay to patient with evil ppl and nations.
Also he is often going with mercy instead of wrath. For example Adam and Eve was supposed to die for breaking the one and only rule they were given, but God spared them, clothed them ..and even though they had to be exiled if you compared that to death its cleary a waaaay better deal for humanity :D

    25:44
To kind of explain what all the plagues were kinda about, like not only did God only start a new plague every time Pharaoh refused to let them go, but it was also a demonstration of power kinda. Egyptians had a lot of gods (as you commented on during the big boys song 😂) and for each plague that God send, there was an Egyptian god to go along with it that thing. So each time there was a plague it was kind of God being like “okay, what are your ‘gods’ gonna do about this?” and so the movie kind of demonstrates that at the end of the song when you see the statue of one of the gods crumbling.
Also I’d like to point out how interesting the priests are in this movie, like during the song again you talked about how it was basically just a light show more than any “miracles” and that’s exactly what they were trying to show you. Like when they demonstrated they could turn the bowl of water to blood too, comparing it to the river where it looks dark and thick, the bowl looks watered down and so fake, and so it shows that all their miracles were just magic tricks
One more thing going back to the plagues tho, it’s so interesting to learn how the plagues kinda caused one another. Like they happen in a specific order for a reason. The river is turned to blood so all the frogs come out and then after the frogs die the bugs start acting up cuz there’s so much dead stuff, and just yeah, it’s really interesting.

    This movie is AMAZING!
The thing that made me mad is that Pharaoh in the Bible actually agreed to release the Israelites to end each plague individually, and then he would take his word back and thus the cycle of plague after plague happened. It wasn't until Pharaoh kept on doing it was God like "You're done." and gave the rest of the plagues. While that was happening, Pharaoh was too proud and determined to give up so he hardened his heart to seem strong. This story isn't one of joy. Back then, death was common and it still hurt my heart that the parents after all they seen didn't take precautions and their kids payed the price, at least they didn't suffer in the process like the Israelite babies, but still. Idk if you noticed but many of the Egyptians joined the Israelites in leaving so it really was to free everyone.
It's too bad the Israelites sabotaged themselves into spending all those years in the desert tho.

    • @Vincenturious
      @Vincenturious 2 года назад +2

That's not really what happened, or why. In the Bible, the Pharao was actually willing to let the slaves go multiple times, but God interfered with his free will, to harden his heart.
"The Lord had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you-so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt.” Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country."
As to why God would harden the heart of the man if he wanted his people to be free, the Bible have this to say: ex 9:14 NIV: "This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me, 14or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth. 15For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. " So yeah. Old testament God created the Egyptians in so that he could kill them slowly and torturously to flex his powers, and set and example, even though He was the one to arrange for the slavery of his people, and prevented the success of diplomatic talks, that were only happening for show anyways.

@@Vincenturious in Exodus 8:8 it happened. With the frogs specifically first. Pharoah changed his mind. Idk if the NIV changed that detail (it didn't, it just shows each of the plagues seperately before the chapter you included happened) but I'm reading from the KJV.

Yes to show his power, but also to prove to the Israelites that He is God. Or at least that's what I took from it. I don't think the reason was for torture, although alot of what happened in the Old Testement was brutal and scary. Why they ended up being slaves, thats has to do with Abraham.
Their way of thinking was so differently done than mine. This is what I got from it.

I haven't seen this movie in a while, so I don't know if it's in there, but the reason Moses's mother gave him up wasn't to give him a better life free of slavery, but to literally save his life. The Egyptians were killing all newborn Israeli boys to stop the growth of the nation (yeah, I just remembered the scene where he finds the hieroglyphics). The princess that adopted him knew he was an Israeli, so she hired an Israeli woman to be his nanny (who was his actual mum). He knew he wasn't an Egyptian since the beginning. Also Miriam (his sister) was the oldest of the three siblings and she was waiting around to see what would happen to him (when he was put in the basket). She was the one who suggested to the princess to bring an Israeli nanny and then recommended their mother. Aaron was actually much more supportive than he is portrayed in here. After Moses came back to Egypt (after his experience with the bush on fire), he was nervous to appear before the pharaoh, so Aaron became his spokesman. Also, Moses fled from Egypt when he was 40 and he spent another 40 years in the desert, so he was literally 80 years old when he came back to free the nation. And he only met his wife in the desert at the well where he helped her and her sisters to water their sheep, she wasn't imprisoned by the Egyptians. Just a few interesting details ♥️
Also, after finally watching your reaction, since the 7th of the 10 plagues, the Egyptians could have always protected themselves and their families and possessions from any harm. Moses always told them beforehand what precautions to take, it didn't even require that much effort. Only the ones who thought all of this was nonsense even after seeing Moses's words come true again and again and again and still refused to do anything lost their firstborns. And they could have left Egypt with Moses. Many of them did.

Anybody not adopted, will never understand this story ;-) Egyptians didn't have to work in the fields all the time, but several times a year, the rest of the year they were "idle hands". The Pharaoh was an incarnate god! Most builders were Egyptian, not foreigners. Pharaoh Ramses built a new capital in Goshen (Eastern Delta), were the Hebrews already were living, so they would naturally be drafted (there was no money tax, just labor tax). Today we send our delinquents to college, to party hardy ;-(

RUclips Musicians, Caleb Hyles and Jonathan Young did a cover of "Playing with the Big Boys" that I think is better than the one in the movie. It sounds like a WWE Intro which fits in the same vein in that the priest's performances are a smoke and mirrors act.

Have you watched the Disney movie The Fox And The Hound? My mom went to go see this movie in theaters when she was younger and babysitting some kids. Gets emotional though

11:14 Because Miriam has survived her life as a slave by convincing herself that Moses was saved by God so that he will come back and save them some day. She can't just let go of that belief.
Aaron on the other hand has survived his life as a slave by keeping his head low and not saying anything, trying to take it one day at a time and avoiding being flogged whenever he can because he knows they can and will flog him for anything

27:25 Girl, those kids were already damned.
Think about it. God took their lives, while sleeping peacefully, instead of still living as SLAVES for who knows how long.
