- Alister McRae, the younger brother of the Legendary McRae lineage, having beaten the All Time Record of Leadfoot Festival´s Hillclimb at the wheel of the ex-Possum Bourne Subaru Impreza WRC 1998 last year, was once again the winner of the event on 2020. The Monstruous WRC unit now run by Vantage Windows Motorsport is faster than ever and converted into full HillClimb-spec, it is producing around 880Hp/940Nm. This is a 1998 S5 unit, originally driven by Juha Kangas on the New Zealand Rally, and is still powered by the 2.0L engine unit but now equipped with a Borgwarner EFR 7670 or EFR 8374 (depending on the kind of power and powerband required) with external wastegate. Running on E85 Fuel, it has an RPM limit set at 9000Rpm, delivering a maximum of 940Nm of torque at 5600Rpm. All this additional power is transferred to the ground through a 4-Wheel Drive transmission with a Prodrive Hewland 6 speed H-Pattern with hydraulic centre and front diffs, while the rear one is now either a Hewland spool diff or locked LSD option. Suspension-wise it is equipped with Reiger dampers, 3 way adjustable, double piston and RCV with tarmac springs alongside Titanium sway bars for tarmac events. While still weghing an hefty 1200Kg, it is an enormously quick machine, putting all this power to the ground in a very efficient manner, the key to its continued success at Rod Millen´s Leadfoot Festival, where it won the last 4 Editions.

One thing I love about racing, as cars and drivers start getting faster and faster they have a tendency to look smoother and almost slower and then you reach a point where it all of a sudden looks incredibly violent and erratic
Reminds me of the old „star in a reasonably priced car“ segment on Top Gear.
The fastest laps would look smooth, boring and slow but the moment they passed the wall of tyres on the follow-through and the subsequent corners you could see that the car was barely hanging on for dear life…
That's what I love about Rally. The fastest laps are often the most chaotic 😂

Rally cross is a great way to get some of the experience of rally without having to worry about wrapping it around a tree, it’s a lot safer, although it’s a little slower since there aren’t as long of straights.

Alister took me for a lap of a rally sprint circuit in Perth in an Evo x a few years ago. Fucking mind bendingly quick in a stock car and he wasn’t driving anything like what we see in this clip. Good man, huge skills.

They seriously are.. Formula one driving may be a different set of criteria, likewise for rally, maybe its like boxing and mma.. But rally driving is more life threatening, some of the courses 1 slip means your falling off a cliff.. Thats what makes these guys absolute nutters

Given the vertical frame in this 'short' edit, I'll offer that it could be that the video was both playing at normal speed and edited with editing-room 'panning' and 'blocking' of a much wider original frame, which is to say--in my regrettably limited way--that the editor of this clip moved the narrow, visible part of the frame within the wider, cameraman-controlled frame, artificially quickly. ... The cameramen--There were multiple, of course--were likely recording in landscape, not portrait, and the computer-controlled panning for this portrait-mode short was what was artificially fast; The action was--in my opinion--real-speed, and not accelerated.
