  • The 2021 Burn was a historical year for the history of Burning Man. It will never happen again. See what makes the 2021 Rogue Burn a one-of-a-kind Burn in this in-depth Mini Documentary.
    I set out to Black Rock City for the 2021 Burning Man to document this rare year. It could have been a complete sh*t show mess, or a a very special year that will never be repeated. For many reasons, this year goes down as one of the most unique and historical burns in the history of the event.

    I was there in 2021, and again this year, 2022... 2021 Renegade Burn was the most pure, heartfelt, sincere event I experienced. I definitely hope that those burners who get disillusioned with commercialized, politicized, formalized Burning Man will form a new Renegade Burn that will continue the legacy of the original Burning man of the 80s-90s as well as 2021 Renegade burn!

    2021 was an amazing burn. I appreciate it even more after 2022. It was so much more intimate. There were no walls of RVs or large private theme camp areas. Every camp felt like it could be explored and people were much more willing to create and engage in smaller experiences.
    A few thoughts on your video:
    Most people I know are referring to 2021 as the "renegade burn." Plan B was just the facebook group.
    30,000 people is a pretty extreme estimate. Most counts put it somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 on the weekends.
    We truly did build Black Rock City. Medical, bike repair, art car transit, showers, food, you name it we had it. It was a real city and a real burn!
    While some people did pee on the playa, most did not. We carried pee bottles. The amount of respect shown to the playa was incredible, especially given the large percentage of burgins. BLM rangers were overall very impressed.
    The reason there were no portos was because BLM created a special policy that week banning commercial services. Otherwise we would have fundraised to have large banks of serviced portos.
    Although it was very easy to get lost out there, especially if you didn't arrive early and see it all emerge, there were many landmarks to help once you learned them (light towers on esplanade, giant dildo suspended from a crane, large inflated elephant, etc.) We spent a lot of time rangering and helping lost people find their way home.
    There were only really a few large camps that setup far outside the main perimeter (spanky's and one other come to mind). They were worried the event would descend into chaos and wanted to be far away if that happened.
    Lack of funding from the BMORG isn't the reason there wasn't a lot of large-scale art. Art projects are only partially-funded by the org. Often only amounting to 10% of the project's total cost. The main reason is that BLM forbid construction that wasn't directly related to camping/shade. That's why the art that was there needed to be disguised as a shade structure (by hanging a tarp off of it or putting tents underneath). Artists also had very little time to prepare.
    2021 was such an incredible year. 2022 felt sterile by comparison.

    I think the comparison is spot on. Even though I missed the big art and ease of locating places, I really appreciated BM '21 for the freedom and opportunity to connect with friends while not being caught up in the usual frenzy of creating and max'ing out the big event. Of course, Juplaya can be experienced every year, as well. Way less people and even more intimacy.

    • @ToddKortte
      @ToddKortte  2 года назад +1

      Yeah the freedom of 2021 was really nice. I have heard so much about 4th of Juplaya. I almost went this year. How many people show up for that? Are there big camps and art cars?

    • @publicacct5626
      @publicacct5626 2 года назад +1

      @@ToddKortte Juplaya is much smaller. I'd estimate about 1000 people this year, and that was a unique situation. There was a separate event being hosted (Everywhen, put on by some of the Plan B folks) that drew in a lot of people and helped concentrate the camps. Most years the number is probably just a few hundred folks, often *very* spread out. You'll see the occasional art car and larger camp, usually from the Reno area. Juplaya has seen a bit of a downturn in the past 5 years after BLM banned the use of fireworks and flame effects that weekend. I still go every year and have a lot of fun. Hopefully it starts growing again. Be sure to check out the hot springs if you go.

    • @ToddKortte
      @ToddKortte  2 года назад

      Do you think Juplya will grow every year? I know a lot of people are curious about this event and want to know more. I wonder if the PlanB folks have a social media page somewhere that people can look into.

    • @publicacct5626
      @publicacct5626 2 года назад +1

      @@ToddKortte For the past while I've felt that Juplaya has been shrinking. It doesn't feel like the 4th of July without fireworks. It's really not an event, just a bunch of people dispersed camping across all corners of the playa. I still have a lot of fun there, just don't expect it to be a burn. There are a few facebook groups, the main one I know of is "Juplaya." The group is especially useful for learning about weather conditions (the lake is often still present making it very easy for vehicles to get stuck).
      Everywhen is a separate event that was also held over that weekend this year. I don't know what their plans are for next year or if tickets will be required. As mentioned some of the Plan B facebook folks are associated with it. The presence of that event really did change Juplaya this year (for the better imo). In October 2022 they're also hosting an event in the Mojave desert. They have their own website and facebook groups.

    My first burn was '96 - no trash fence and located out in the middle of the playa. Maybe 12 thousand people in individual camps fronting the streets... not 'villages' of camps turned in on themselves. Went every year till '03 when it was beginning to get more and more crowded (~32K) and the start of people paying others to set up and run their camps. Stopped going until one more try in '18. Way too many people. Glad to see '21 was a return to something of what it used to be. However, I'll bet they didn't bring back the drive-by shooting range.

    Todd read the BLM after action report for 2021. BLM backed down when Burners became too confrontational. Check out the photos in their report. The out lying camps were civil and left the playa clean, mostly. Much like '96. Center camp was a mess from the consumers who come to party and poop. The 2022 renegade burn up north is/was a shit show. This year the Pyramid highway (go west from Nixon) from Quail Creek to Spanish Springs was a continuous debris field of garbage, bicycles and some broken down RV's. Unhappy locals quickly cleaned that up. Nixon to Quail Creek is Paiute country with dumpsters spotted at every turnout. B-Man just ignores their neighbors and says, "that's not mine."

      I really think there should be a trash removal and collection process out at Burning Man. There has to be some room left in the ticket price to cover this. Some burners are not even aware that they need to take their trash for the week out with them....and there are not many options on where to put your trash once you leave. Burning Man is absolutely *not* cramped everywhere, and people are not "fighting for a spot on Esplanade". If you want space, just go camp in the boonies out on J. The statement "You're cram packed in a limited amount of space with not a lot of room to breathe" is patently false.
    "In Burning Man 2021 a lot of the bigger camps set up far away from the circle where there is a lot more freedom and space to do whatever you wanted." This is also weirdly, unnecessarily false. You could have as much space anywhere on playa that you wanted and could do whatever you wanted (legally) wherever it was you camped. They simply camped far away from people because they wanted to camp far away from people.
    I appreciate you making this video and the work that went into it, but it's weird the stuff you just made up for the sake of the whole *compare and contrast* narrative.

    • @ToddKortte
      @ToddKortte  2 года назад +3

      MADE IT UP?! Are you kidding me? Do you realize how hard it is and how much time it takes to make a mini Documentary like this? I would not waste my time if I am making this up.
      Yes you can go camp out on J, there is a lot more space because its a less desirable location because everyone wants to be "closer to the Esplanade"..... Out on J, it is still not spaced out nearly as much as 2021. Not even close! There is also more space past J in the 3 to 4 area for camping. Still not miles of empty desert space....hence the comparison that you think I made up. Its 70,000 People fenced into a controlled area (crammed) vs 30,000 people with miles of open desert. I really don't see how this is patently false as you put it....
      So everything from J to the Esplanade is crammed packed! Even you said there is room out at J, but not in any streets other than J. Camps are back to back at a normal burn. At 2021, there was so much space and camps were spread out to the point that a lot of Burners mentioned they didn't feel like they needed to lock up their camp when they left. At a normal Burn you can't do that because things get taken.
      Are you aware that the larger theme camps set up a week before the main event? They are "assigned" an area by the Burning Man Org to build their camps. If you ever decide to join a large camp, you will know this. Some camps have a permanent spot....others get shifted around. Those shifting camps "fight to get a spot closer to the Esplanade" where most of the action is..... I can't make this up....
      And the larger camps, take Spankys for example, set up camp far away (miles) from the center because there is more freedom. There are no rangers making rounds out there like in the center... The have less of a chance offending anyone (Spankys is not a place to take children). There are less people wandering into your camp. If you know their camp, you'll make the effort to go see them. Hence "more freedom." They don't have to deal with any burners that are not familiar with their camp and what they have to offer.
      I also want to thank you for your opinions and leaving a comment. I want people to express their opinions. You have the right to what you believe and I respect that.

      Yeah I went out there and talked to them too. Thank you for this info! I heard they had a pretty big party one night that was a lot of fun. We missed all of that. We drove out there during the day and hung out for awhile. Went to say hi and see who was all out there. The camp where Sacred Heart art car were also camping far away. So were the Alternate Energy camp. It was kind of fun visiting camps further out. It was like visiting small towns around a big city. It made 2021 really unique. Maybe the Org should expand past the temple for another mile or so to give camps options to spread out and be isolated destinations for retreats, late night early rise parties, or special events.
