The old man is just as bad as the wife. He is like the murdering soldier that kills only because his ruler tells him to. The old man could have asked the gold fish to make his wife happy and satisfied. But he chose to not think and only obey.

Hello miss storyteller! This was tonight's bedtime story for my niece and nephew. They both said "this lady is being greedy and never happy. That's no way to be"! They loved it and they both learned a lesson. It was charming and they love hearing the pretty lady read to them.😄 I limit them to one story a night. If not they trick me into several in a row. QUITE WHINING and be happy for what we were given. If she kept on complaining, I would have told her that she has to ask the fish.

Obviously, the wife deserved what she got (actually...she got off lucky...at first I thought she was going to go to the bottom of the ocean and drown), but I think, in a way, the old man deserved it too. I mean, trying to please your wife is one thing, but being someone's doormat is quite another! Like others have said...should have asked for a better wife!
