It’s a personal storytelling pet peeve of mine that the voices swap along with the characters, even if it’s so people don’t get confused over who’s who. Plus, when the voices don’t swap, it gives the VAs the chance to play around with the voice they usually do, and gives you a look at “how would X sound like if they talked like Y?” If you can tell who’s who just based on cadence and word choice, you know you’ve got strong characters!

@@aduckofsomesort So to confirm, body swapping as a concept most likely originated back in 1689, in a book by John Locke: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Transformation (1830) Avatar (1856) The Gentleman in Black (opera from 1870) Vice Versa: A Lesson to Fathers (1882, you could make the argument that Freaky Friday is a more modern, gender-swapped version of this story) An Exhange of Souls (1911) The Eye of Envy (1917) The Master Mind of Mars (1928) Turnabout (1931) Laughing Gas (1936) The Shadow Out of Time (1936) The Thing on the Doorstep (1937) The Victorian Chaise-Longue (1953) The Greeneyed Elephant (1960) These all predate Freaky Friday in terms of being a book and its first movie adaptation. There's apparently a lot more too, but they don't have Wikipedia articles to explain much about them.
Jay, you forgot that Futurama had a body swap episode where Farnsworth trade bodies with Amy then Bender, Amy trade bodies with the professor then Leela did the same inside professor, Bender disguises as Amy, Fry and Zoidberg switch bodies, etc. etc.
51:46 It wasn't a lack of space that led to that last trait being deleted, it was Sheen's exasperation at the wording. Also some people get tripped up at the length of it, but the main thing you need to decode it is at the beginning - "extreme dislike of *girls* who..." If the trait belonged to Jimmy, it shows that the reason he dislikes Cindy is because she calls him out for being a showoff, but also that deep down he KNOWS he's a showoff. If the trait belonged to Cindy, it shows that despite thinking Jimmy is a showoff, she dislikes herself for disliking him because of it. Either one is an interesting character detail that shows a deep insecurity.
Fun Fact: Trollhunters Rise of the Titans used the body swap trope as a plot device as a way to delay the inevitable the trope is cut short after the arcane order breaks the spell, and this doesnt count since its a movie
I really think the body swap between Celestia and Luna from MLP deserved a spot on this list. Luna might have fumbled the bag at Celestia's job, getting school field trips cancelled and spreading panic about timber wolves, but Celestia nearly DESTROYS Starlight's psyche when she has difficulty intervening with her Nightmare. Edit: it might not be a FULL body swap, but a part of themselves was swapped and that's good enough for me.
I liked that one Jackie Chan Adventures episode where all their chi got swapped but the characters would imitate how each other would talk! Made for an even funnier scenario.
I like Body Swap episode in cartoon, they're one of my favorite trope if they're done right. My favorite kind are the one where you have the VA voicing the other character and you can hare their voice vome out of the mouth of the other character.
I think it was not mentioned but Justice League Unlimited had a very fun body swap episode between The Flash and Luthor. It was kinda random as it happened by accident. Luthor almost wrecked the entire Justice League and the Watchtover as a speedster, meanwhile Flash had to play dumb and pretend to be Luthor or else the Legion of Doom would have him executed. It had a few memorable quotes to boot.
It works on multiple levels since Michael Rosenbaum who voiced Flash in the show had already been playing Lex Luthor on Smallville, so in a way, he got to reprise his role as the character

59:33 The rare Chloe defender here: She is smart, she's just overtrusting, naive, and wears kinda rose-tinted glasses for people she likes, to the point where she trusts someone more than logic would allow. She trusted that Timmy, her best friend, would do what she wanted him to do in her body, which was eat just enough burgers to win. She didn't anticipate that he'd go out of his way to vastly overeat. Timmy straight up ate like four times the amount that he should have at the competition and kept eating after the fact too. She expected him to eat hamburgers, not to eat 17 pounds of it. After all, he doesn't really eat like that when he's in his own body, so can you blame her for thinking that he'd eat like a normal human being?
> She trusted that Timmy, her best friend, would do what she wanted him to do in her body, which was eat just enough burgers to win. Then she doesn't know her best friend. Please point to me a season where Timmy has ever been that considerate about anyone beyond himself?
@@TheAlphaJayShow If I remember correctly, he saved Cosmo and Chloe from the share bears. I recall one show doing it but I can’t remember which one (Kim possible?) Only those in the vicinity of Chariot Requiem!) and there I think Trish's VA Lizzie Freeman does an awesome job at it! (I think Mista's VA did already too) She especially stood out to me :>
The puppet king also comes back in the race episode and it's ridiculous he ever comes back at all since he never gets a stand alone episode again at any point;the control freak even lampshades it at one point
I have to be honest, 'Generation Zap' fits more into the body swap trope for Sabrina than 'Witch Switch' does. 'Witch Switch,' to me, feels more like a 'be me for a day' episode than a body swap episode. 'Generation Zap' actually shows body swapping between Sabrina and Enchantra, the head of the Witches' Council, and them seeing what have to deal with in their lives. This is my opinion on that. Also, I'm surprised you didn't include 'She Talks to Angel,' from MLP:FiM as that involves also body swapping with Fluttershy and her pet bunny, Angel.
To me, an element rarely tackled with this story plot is the idea of what happens when the body swap involves multiple incompatible people who don't have good chemistry together. In the Chikn Nuggit Parody Show episode, Stop and Swap, we see Fwench Fwy (as Iscream) and Iscream (as Cofi) kissing. Which shocks Chikn (as Cheezborger) and Chee (as Fwench Fwy) since the duo aren't the best of friends. Plus, I enjoy how bodyswaps tackle with an individual's powers. The fact that Cheezborger had access (but bad at it) to Fwench Fwy's powers hits the spot too.
The funny thing is that Phineas and Ferb did the body swap thing TWICE. Season 4's "Mind Swap" has the two stepbrothers being tricked into swapping them and their friends' bodies with those of alien prisoner convicts. With the alien convicts roaming around Danville in the kids' bodies, and the kids stuck in alien prison with a limited timeframe, it becomes a race against the clock (with prison escape movie references) to fix the mind-swapping machine from the prison (as it got destroyed by a warden earlier), get the alien convicts back in the backyard and have their bodies swapped back. Also, Doofenshmirtz has a date at a square dance festival. It's a REALLY weird episode.
The examples in this video were all specifically animated body swaps, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the body swap episode from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Gellar and Dushku do a great job playing each other's roles, and it's a wonderful exploration of Faith's character.
Sorry for my bad English but I'm from Mexico. I have a gumbal theory that I can't stop thinking about. Thobias (that is, the colored one) already knew about the void (that is, the entity that controlled the series and where everything forgotten was). I saw everything gumbal and I realized that Thobias always wanted to appear in the series, he even wanted to be a protagonist, it's as if he knew how the void worked. In the chapter where my theory was reinforced is the chapter where the series changes completely to make a series from the 80s. Also, as always I knew when the most important thing in the series was going to happen. Well, my theory is very crazy but thank you if you read it.

I feel Carpet Diem was probably my least-favorite of the body swap episodes, because while the premise of a carpet causing people to switch bodies was good,it just got ruined with Dipper and Mabel arguing and fighting and caring more about fighting over the key for the room than the situation they were in. It would’ve been better written if they took out the room fight plot and had Dipper and Mabel learning to be and act like each other while both in different bodies, while keeping the carpet body swap premise.
@@McCraeTheMediaLover I get what you mean but I also did like them pretending to be each other to sabotage their chances for the room and Stan having enough of it

In defense of Season 3 Chowder, I started rewatching that show a couple weeks ago and real talk, Chowder is very consistently a dimwitted little hellion that sows the seeds of chaos everywhere he walks. In nearly every episode, I was watching Chowder do some dumb shit he was told not to do and ruin everything. Shit had me rolling my eyes every five seconds. I still love the show to death though, so don't get me wrong. Chowder's antics are what make it entertaining. But now I understand why my mom hated watching Chowder with me when I was a kid lol
It’s great knowing other people love body swap episodes. It’s one of my favorites to see a character act like another due to some curse or radioactivity.
One thing I always found weird about body swap episodes is when the voices also swap. It doesn’t make much sense to me how their voice changes if it’s only their minds that swapped. Not to mention that nobody noticed. I know why this is done, so we can recognize who is in whose body and not to be taken seriously. But I think the character changing their hairstyle manually is fine enough. And if you have well written enough characters or just have two different characters swapping, you wouldn’t need to know who’s who is talking.
It's actually common in the Phandom for Poindexter to find out the truth about the Danny and Dash situation and have a full personal crisis because he went against his very core, followed by some kind of comeuppance for Dash and/or Poindexter doing some kind of repentance in the future (such as a story where Izuku is the reincarnation of Danny and Poindexter makes sure, 100%, that Bakugo IS bullying Izuku and responds to finding out that this is the case by giving Bakugo a taste of exactly what he's put Izuku through, fixing the whole issue because Bakugo got scared straight). Also, another fun "bodies swap, voices don't" episode is from "Transformers Rescue Bots", with the episode in question coming from the cast messing around backstage, pretending to be each other's characters. And all the swaps have some kind of dynamic that makes the swap either meaningful, hilarious or both.
I didn't like it when I was younger as as the dub directors missed the memo so the character had the same voice in the other body (it /can/ work, but they acted the exact same as before). Dropping dubs and seeing it done well and the voice actors acting completely different is a lot of fun. Yes, it's kind of a cliché, but if done well, it's a lot of fun.
To be honest I’m glad that Steven Universe episode The New Lars was not in the categories like it, barely counts as a body swap episode because we only see Steven go into Lars‘s body, but Lars did not go in the Steven’s body
I wish more shows didn't also switch the voices, characters doing impressions of each others is one of my favourite fictional tropes. On a semi-related note, MLP had a particularly interesting case where a mute character (Angel) swapped with a verbal character (Fluttershy), but Angel COULD talk in Fluttershy's body using Fluttershy's voice. It was cool seeing a previously mute character verbally communicate with others, especially since it made Angel's rude personality even more apparent. The episode itself had a messy moral, but it'd be fun to see more cases of mute characters body swapping with verbal characters as a means of having them talk.
Sometimes I dont mind in bodyswaps if they "voice" swap at least if its done more in a sense like if its a multi/group swap and you sant to make it easier for the audience to tell who is who and if its not acknowledged in show one can assume that well obviously their voices havent actually changed and it's just for us- that said it is always a lot of fun when Vas get to play around and try to immitate each other and am all for it.

Even though these videos take a long time to watch, I really enjoy them. Here are a few more ideas. 1. Bully episodes; episodes that focus on the bully or have the protagonist turn into a bully. 2. Out of time episodes; episodes that take place in a different era than the show normally does. 3. Anthology episodes; an episode of episodic or serialized show that is comprised of several shorter stories instead of a typical episode.

I agree about what you said about Danny Phantom. Look, I'll admit, Danny's actions were very morally questionable, but it's only after Dash did something to him 1st to provoke him. And even if Danny were to be the actual bully, it still wouldn't make what Poindexter did to him any less wrong. Really, having been a bully victim myself growing up, rewatching this episode years later irritates me. I mean, someone is harassing you nonstop, your response is to fight back to get them to back off, but *you're* the one who gets in trouble. I mean, depending on the circumstances, you feel like fighting back is the only solution.
Okay, I’m just gonna point this out, in S3 EP14 of Steven Universe, Steven swaps into Lars’ body, the cause of Steven waking up in Lars’ body, then causing Steven making Lars a “New” version of himself, making Lars a happier and more kinder version of himself, but Steven tries to make Lars “confess” to Sadie from him in Lars’ body, but ultimately fails and Steven then tells Sadie that he is in Lars’ body they both go to the temple, Lars’ parents follow thinking he’s robbing the house, but then Steven wakes Lars up then causing them to swap, Lars freaks out then the episode cuts to the next day, Steven apologizes and give Lars a card then the episode ends. (Yes I did right this full ahh essay)

Also I've had a theory close to pointdexter he didn't commit self destruct but low fuel and spark went offline in the locker over summer with scorching heat. May I say more?
Hearing Stewie's voice in Peter is a little extra weird because they're both played by Seth Macfarlane. Like, they have the same VA but different tones of voice, which that episode puts into perspective.

@@TheCommenterDragon what pieces of media did body swapping prior to 1976? Was it a prevalent trope before 1976?
@@TheCommenterDragon I don’t know why my comment was deleted, I asked how common the trope was prior to 1976 and what specific medias that displayed the body swap trope prior to 1976.
@@aduckofsomesort So to confirm, body swapping as a concept most likely originated back in 1689, in a book by John Locke: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding.
Transformation (1830)
Avatar (1856)
The Gentleman in Black (opera from 1870)
Vice Versa: A Lesson to Fathers (1882, you could make the argument that Freaky Friday is a more modern, gender-swapped version of this story)
An Exhange of Souls (1911)
The Eye of Envy (1917)
The Master Mind of Mars (1928)
Turnabout (1931)
Laughing Gas (1936)
The Shadow Out of Time (1936)
The Thing on the Doorstep (1937)
The Victorian Chaise-Longue (1953)
The Greeneyed Elephant (1960)
These all predate Freaky Friday in terms of being a book and its first movie adaptation. There's apparently a lot more too, but they don't have Wikipedia articles to explain much about them.
Jay, you forgot that Futurama had a body swap episode where Farnsworth trade bodies with Amy then Bender, Amy trade bodies with the professor then Leela did the same inside professor, Bender disguises as Amy, Fry and Zoidberg switch bodies, etc. etc.
I’m afraid we need to use… MATH
genuinely thought that would be the final example of the trope here 😢
They literally invented a formula just for the bit 😭
And the one with the borax kid.
@@dragoon1090That was more genders than bodies
51:46 It wasn't a lack of space that led to that last trait being deleted, it was Sheen's exasperation at the wording.
Also some people get tripped up at the length of it, but the main thing you need to decode it is at the beginning - "extreme dislike of *girls* who..."
If the trait belonged to Jimmy, it shows that the reason he dislikes Cindy is because she calls him out for being a showoff, but also that deep down he KNOWS he's a showoff.
If the trait belonged to Cindy, it shows that despite thinking Jimmy is a showoff, she dislikes herself for disliking him because of it.
Either one is an interesting character detail that shows a deep insecurity.
Fun Fact: Trollhunters Rise of the Titans used the body swap trope as a plot device as a way to delay the inevitable
the trope is cut short after the arcane order breaks the spell, and this doesnt count since its a movie
I don't know if that really counts though since they don't switch bodies, they just switch roles
That's not a body swap, just a role reversal. Friendship is Magic's only real body swap episode is She Talks to Angel.
Jay can only tell you what he has seen
I will always like that Futurama episode where they had to invent a formula in order to fix the solution at the end of the episode xD
Lex- I have no idea who this is great episode
It works on multiple levels since Michael Rosenbaum who voiced Flash in the show had already been playing Lex Luthor on Smallville, so in a way, he got to reprise his role as the character
“You gonna wash your hands?”
“No. Cause I’m evil”-flash in Luthor’s body
i always imagine someone body swapping with me and then immediately screaming in pain, doubling over & falling to the floor still screaming and then I'm just like "yep, that's the chronic back pain i've been talking about for the last 17 years that you didn't believe"
Also didn't all the kids, including Timmy, hate the squirrelly scout trip but were sticking it out for his dad? (Genuine question, I haven't seen that episode in a while). Even in this episode, it was for selfish reasons but Timmy was helping Chloe out. They're more rare than they should be because I admit season 10 as a whole isn't great, but Timmy can still be a good kid, and Chloe's rose tinted glasses only see his helpfulness and not the selfishness behind it.
Okay, I'm officially mad at that Danny Phantom episode, because WHAT THE HELL
Because I was the child who was bullied - and I did exactly NOTHING to them, I didn't had physical means to get back on them in any way
The only thing I could do is being verbally mean
And why the hell I would *want* to treat politely person who actively insulting me?!
The one thing they never address in body swap eps is when a male and female body swap is the bathroom situation Especially the ones that last more then a day. It's a completely different world of experience
I recall one show doing it but I can’t remember which one (Kim possible?)
But yeah, that’s gotta be a freaking weird thing for a person to go through especially if we’re talking teens or kids who barely understand the differences in biology and now have to experience it first hand.
That’s gotta be awkward

I love bodyswap episodes its a great way for the characters to understand eachover without any over the top steven universe/hey Arnold therapist type speeches
Love it when the voice actors in bodyswap episodes try to sound like the other character! Idk if this counts but in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure the whole world body swaps (CORRECTION! Only those in the vicinity of Chariot Requiem!) and there I think Trish's VA Lizzie Freeman does an awesome job at it! (I think Mista's VA did already too) She especially stood out to me :>

@@McCraeTheMediaLover I get what you mean but I also did like them pretending to be each other to sabotage their chances for the room and Stan having enough of it
@@ellielovegood6307 I wished the writers would’ve had done that if they had them pretend to be each other the right way if they learn to be like what’s like to be each other and if they chose to deal with this carpet body swap situation instead of fighting over a dumb room.

I never knew these were hated I remember loving every single obligatory bodyswap/genderswap episode that always got made in every cartoon as a kid. It would bum me out when it would end and I remember wishing that one of those episodes could happen to me.
I love this video it finally gives a thoroughly explanation to a troupe that seems "cliché" and overused, and shows how expansive the troupe actually is with the many different ways you can do it.

Btw my favorite episode has got to be the Jessie swap.
Oh boy is there a lot of body swap animes too. “Ranma 1/2” is a big one and it’s amazing
I really liked this video for exploring so many aspects of Body swapping episodes and how its not just self explanatory in the name

Phineas and Ferb actually had another body swap episode.
I'm so glad I'm early for a video about body swaps!
