For the teeth, you might find it easier to select the teeth with the quick selection, select hue/saturation and select the yellows and drop the saturation and boost the brightness a little. Its a lot faster and has a more natural look. Great video as always!
Nice tip. One that I prefer to use is to use a new layer with the Screen blending mode, masked, and paint the teeth (and sometimes irises) in with a soft brush. Then, lower the opacity as desired to look brighter but not so that it calls attention to itself.
Where did we get the notion that whiter teeth on a person will mean better customer service? Disney?

What i do for skin retouching is use the frequency separation technique then use imagenomic in a separate layer and just change the opacity to a max of 30%. that way it's still look natural. Also i would chop the head in post just in case the client change their mind and wanted the whole head. and the cropping would be the last thing i do.

This was very helpful! ...but then all your vidz have been!! I thought I was pro because I used to specialise in Glamour shots and had a good understanding of photography and photoshop (in its early days), but since finding you two I have learned so so much more and come to realise that I am still only semi-pro lol. hey nice work, one question: wouldnt it have been beter to use 1/128 flash in the box to get the background white from the getgo? or would that ruin the overall impression of light in the picture?

I like the "loading" part of the video........I over pack as well, you never know! In NYC, cars may not be an option, so we have to hand carry everything up and down subway stairs so it's critical to pack everything well. As a "combat" celeb and entertainment photog, we have about 30 sec to a min to shoot, I highly recommend bringing a tripod for those shots and also to have a vertical grip, it is easier on your arm and no chicken wing :)
I enjoyed watching this video. I wish there was more actual behind the scenes of the shoot though, maybe some discussion about posing and composition and working with people who aren't professional models. The editing tips were helpful too. It's also refreshing to see that even professionals have to be flexible when they're on the job, and that it's best to be prepared for anything!

Yeah, we're shooting pretty constantly still, but don't usually record it because it's a distraction for the client... this time we negotiated a model release and filming rights as part of the deal.

+Victor Rivera It totally depends on the client, the time and equipment required for the job, and your own credentials. Try to find a price that makes it worth your time (including the pre-sales time and post-processing time), but that still makes it a good value for your client.

Dr T, your thoughts: Lightsphere Collapsable Diffuser by Gary Fong??? (Have one, great results with off-camera flash. However, no experience with umberella flash to see if it is an equivalent replacement--the claim...)

We did receive a review copy of the Lightsphere, and tried it out in this video, but found it to be clumsy, inefficient, and expensive compared to alternatives, and rather than bashing it we left it out of the review.

At 04:00 have you ever actually had a pro-grade CF card fail? It's always in the back of my mind, but I've never had a problem in all the years I've been using them... I never delete in camera, always format and never shoot till FULL. My camera bodies all have two slots in them, but I use one for stills and the second card designated for video. Is redundant date collection in camera still necessary in your opinion?
Yeah, all the memory cards we've had fail were pro-grade CF cards. If you can't afford to lose your images, write them to two cards.

Good to see I am not the only one that can't figure out how to fold up the circular deflector!
i wish the school photographers could have edited the imperfections out out our school photos they used softening filters for most of my school photos witch reduced the flaws for some reason photos taken in the studio were always better than photos taken on location using the lights on stands with umbrella reflectors is this usaly the resault
I like to keep it simple, that being said with all the lighting equipment you brought, it appears you primarily used the Gary Fong light modifier! It's nice to have all the bells and whistles for the studio but location shooting can be become a nightmare if one gets caught up in all the "gear" and the complications of managing it an hectic atmosphere. I use the Fong modifier and snoot a lot and my work flow on the front end goes really quick. Keep up the good work!
Exactly! I wanted to be prepared to get the shot, but I prefer to keep it simple and natural lighting is my favorite.
I don't usually use the Gary Fong, but they sent it to us and I wanted some experience with it for a future review.

Can I ask a question ? I can't change or adjust my crop area box in photoshop CS6, anybody knows how to solve this problem? Anytime I click on the crop tool, I can't change or adjust the curve of crop box. It seems happen when I use rectangular tool, magic wand tool, lasso tool.
I wished you had used the car's in the background instead of using the white reflector. Have you tried a high key portrait effect in a office setting? If so, can you send me the video or tell me the best way to accomplish that technique?

Wouldn't it be better to have the full head of someone and not chop off the top of their hair? What if someone had a mohawk? Also, I noticed that all of the head was not in focus. I know you were wanting to make the white background out of focus so you would take away the imperfections on it but I usually don't see portraits where only the face is in focus and the ears are out of focus. I'm just asking to see why you are doing it this way so maybe I could get better. Thanks!
Whether the top of the head is cropped is a matter of style and preference. Typically we'll shoot it without the head cropped and then crop into the hairline in post if that's the client's preference, which it was this time.
Re: shallow depth-of-field, it's also a matter of preference. You're right that it's not necessary for de-emphasizing background distractions when you can control the background, as we did here. However, the shallow DoF also serves to slightly blur the skin texture in a very natural way, reducing post-processing time.
I'm with you on the crop. Nice headshot, but for corporate use I'd rather see a full head centered picture. That's what I have in mind when I think of a corporate headshot at least. :)
This was the only photo with a tight crop because he's the manager and I wanted his photo to look different.
The rest of the portraits from this shoot were standard crops. I didn't get model releases for everyone, unfortunately, so I can't show them.
Oh, that's why :) Chelsea, I happened to notice, no booze on the job?! :p

I felt that you guys were little insecure (or not confortable) at this location, maybe its because the video rolling and all the other stuff going on, but great video! About chop off the hair, if my client ask for, and if its the case i do it in camera too, but preference is do it in post and send the "uncroped version" for future needs. In my humble opinion, I think the teeth are way to white..
And the face is too much washed out as well... as she said it is a personal preference indeed, but this kind and amount of retouching is way not natural for me... I like the idea to look for natural light with test shots as help but why could not you set up the soft boxes that you were packed up for? It is the same work or even less to adjust the height than holding the reflector in the back. Actually if you have enough softboxes you do not really need to adjust much anyways especially for portraits only...

One thing I always do when shooting portraits is I make sure that the subject’s clothing is 100% the way it should be - that guy’s pink tie could’ve been tightened a bit, and knot tightened as well.

Honestly, we didn't love it. They sent it to us to review, so we were trying it out this day. It was heavy and kept falling off... we were just experimenting with it, but we needed consistent lighting for all the photos, so we couldn't take it off mid-way like we wanted to.
Tony Northrup I agree it is a bit heavy :) and pending on what flash one uses the fit is not always good - I have quite a few flashes and mostly use the Light-Spahre with my Bolt flashes - they are quite powerful and a bit larger so it fits very tight and does not come off - but of course it is to large for my Olympus Fl-600r flashes - the concept is good I think and I really see a difference - hope Gary Fong comes out with lighter versions and better fit options

pretty sure there are better ways to select the background... (try changing your tolerance on the magic wand for an easy solution)
I usually end up fiddling with the tolerance amount anyway. Then, if it isn't enough, I end up using the selection tool to select or deselect.
Plus, I have a wacom that makes it fast and easy to be precise with selecting.
But if that works for you, go for it. I find there are many good ways to complete a task in PS. So many options!
***** Definitely. You should also try the refine edge after you select to make it look really natural (if necessary).
Great video as usual, but I wish there were a few tips on posing, and how to direct the subject. Since you're not using professional models, I imagine direction is very important.

You said at first that the flash was only to fire the strobes and you end up using the flash as a fill light? And used none of the other equipment you packed?
Was Chelsea doing all that editing in real time? My mind is boggled.
Some of it was in real time, some of it was sped up.
Painters tape? Always use gaffers tape-superior to any tape.
That windows PC was very slow hey....struggled with photoshop

I really like these behind the scenes! They answer many questions I don't have to ask. Photographers here are jerks and don't share ANY info! A few questions though if I may, what CF/SD cards do you prefer and what kind of keyboard/mouse do you guys use please and thank you :)
For portrait shoots I'll generally use any cheap CF or SD card (though I write to two simultaneously for backup). We both have Microsoft ergonomic keyboards (amzn.to/1hDzEsz). I use a Logitech Performance MX laser mouse (amzn.to/1edzZYj). Chelsea usually prefers her Wacom (sdp.io/wacom).

What kind of modifier do you guys have on the flash in this shoot?
It was a Gary Phong Lightsphere that we were trying out, but we didn't really like it for this purpose.
Tony Northrup OK, I was wondering why you weren't using the Rogue since you gave it a good review in one of your videos. Or is the Rogue better suited for situations where you can't bounce the light off the ceiling? (I'm thinking of getting one myself for these situations)

We almost always use the viewfinder. I'll only use the back of the camera if I need a different angle than eye-level.
I assume you're showing the equipment as you throw it unprotected into the car. You normally pack it better, right?

I did take half the pictures. Tony and I each took turns taking pics and holding the diffuser. We just didn't get video footage of it for whatever reason
