Chelsea, I took art history when I was in college so I can appreciate the art style, and you did a great job incorporating the concepts into your photo. It was really nice to hear about the symbolism, hearing you talk about your daughter and Tony, and the wedding ring was a nice touch. Well done!
I loved my art history classes! I think people often forget that telling a story/having a purpose can be such an important part of a photo
You guys are such a lovely family it warms my heart to see the happiness your family bring you . Great video too
Beautiful image, the still life's final photograph. Aside from the knowledge needed for the photograph, what a great way to develop an eye for composition when the weather is uncooperative! Still life in painting has had a long history from arrangements of objects for the sake of visual qualities (food, flowers, or tools), for religious purposes (vanitas), and for its broader symbolic content, usually with meanings easily understood by a literate audience. Thank you, not a boring concept or post, at all.
I'll be sharing your tutorial with my photography group!!! Thanks for all the hard work....
Chelsea your so cool, I can't wait I'm getting your book next week. Tony is one lucky guy
Thanks, Dan! Be sure to join our readers' group!
And also...they look awesome framed and hanging on your wall...
You guys are awesome.
Tony, you lucky devil.
mikemarin106 ha ha, yeah, all wonderful content of these videos aside, the one thing that comes to my mind is "Tony, you lucky devil" ;)
Tony is a metronome. Interesting concept...
Nice job Chelsea, thanks for putting some life into still life
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful and an amazing photographer.
Very educational thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you Chelsea for this short informative video. I'm a happy buyer of your book (sdp). I can't wait to watch your next video.
Thank you Chelsea, that was a great tutorial. You guys are both great teachers. I love your plugins at the end of every video they always make me laugh. Keep up the great work. :)
Chelsea you do a fabulous job! Your videos are fabulous! They are very helpful and your good at it.
Gorgeous !
yeah she is. ;)
Thanks Tony and Chelsea for such amazing videos. I just recently found your video and was very inspired by watching them. Just purchased the Stunning Photography and Lightroom book, can't wait to start learning. Thanks again and keep rocking!
I love the video as well. Very informative. I also just found out that I may be a little OCD, because the crooked candles were driving me crazy! LOL! Keep doing what you're doing.
Since my health has made it harder for me to get out as often, to do my landscapes and wildlife, I’ve moved much more towards still life and food photography. As I was a chef for twenty years I enjoy the food elements more but it’s all really challenging.
Beautiful and very informative video!
Nicely explained.
"Trust me I'm a professional" I love how she says it :))
Love this video.. You just opened up a whole new door for me.. I love traditional archery and so does my family ,got a killer ideal, as soon as I set it up and take pics ,I will send it to you and tell me what you think… plus we got to see your goofy side😂,may have had something to do with that glass of wine hahahaha.
Yeah, Tony is a very good looking prop. ^^
Thanks for the nice ideas.
Tony was very lucky to find a spouse that is passionate about the same interests! Of course I could also say Chelsea was lucky to find Tony.
Thanks. i plan on buying a book for myself and a few others for my friends that want to photograph better.
Very nice, particularly the point that front lighting would be flattening and I think desaturated of the interesting colors. I think I would after the main shot. Shot another frame with only the coat pulled to the left, reshaping the ruffles for variety and then to the right and combined the three in PS and used that behind foreground items.
Very well done!
Great work!
Thank's Chelsea-I will get your book .I tried once to get it .
This video was fascinating. I always wondered how to arrange a still life. Thanks!
Thank you, Geoff.
Chelsea!!!...consider modelling as well👍
Nice tutorial. As you say, not the first thing that one may think of to photograph but great learning for lighting! :-)
Thank you Chelsea.
Awesome video! And good to know that the BLURay is a single disc! Awesomeness! Can't wait to get the book!
P.s. Tony is a lucky guy! You are adorable. Lol but Tony is the man so I wouldn't wish anything but the best for your family! You guys are awesome out of all the people I follow I learn the most from you two!
Tony is the man!
The setup and composition story is interesting, but I hoped to learn about the technical aspects of still-life photography. Knowing more about the camera settings you use, the lens and lighting (continuous or flash) would be helpful.
Tony is a metronome... :) Did not know that :)
very interesting chelsea love it ! =)
I have the same Darwin book #49 of the Britannica
MrEye4get (sorry I can't directly respond to you for some reason) This video was supplementing the composition chapter of our book, Stunning Digital Photography, so I didn't cover the settings.
I'll be sure to also cover the setting next time :) It depends on the mood of your still life. Mine is dimply lit, so I used a camera on a tripod and used a slower shutter speed.
Looks good. I would have put your wedding ring on the middle candle as the Mother in a sense holds the family together, also boing in the middle candle it balances the other 2 candles ( Tony & your Daughter) ;-) Just my little addition to an otherwise great composition :-)
Good video but needs more focus on picture of the picture. A 10-15 second shot of the photo at the end without any text would have been nice
Nice. This is what I was looking for. Now pls how to make nice photo of "wife" (woman) . Poses , settings ... . Thank for your hard work.
Is that a fur coat back there, fox, mink or dare I say chinchilla, great practice tutorial I'm gonna try this thanks again.
Thanks Victor. It's my late grandmother's mink. I've never worn it, but it fits the theme perfectly :)
It does fit the theme perfectly
New subscriber here (also seriously considering your book) and I liked the video but don't get me wrong "The crooked candles drove me nuts!" Was there any symbolism there, like no one is perfect or am I just an -sshole? Ha ha!
rule of space? Haven't heard of that one yet- will have to look it up I guess- any suggesitons for sites showing what symbolisms go qwith what objects? also do you have a video discussing the rule of space?
Nazareth434 Check Chapter 4 of Stunning Digital Photography for information about the rule of space and other compositional guides (link in the description)
+Nazareth434 I know of it. I'd never thought of it relating to inanimate objects before Chelsea mentioned it here.
I can see what she means I think.
I'd never realised there was so much meaning behind still-life before. Eek. :)
Nice. but who cares, you're the best prop in this video! :-)~
Do you have your video in cassette?
:( no
***** Dang it i don't have a DVD or Blu ray :(
***** Oh you really want it? I thought you were just teasing me. You can buy the digital version of the video series and just watch the videos on your computer/phone/ipad.
sdpcommunity.com/index.php?/store/category/4-streaming-video/
Can I stream on my windows 95 PC with a 800MHz processor, .26 GB RAM and a dial up internet connection? lol
***** haha, it should work since it streams like RUclips, but if you get it and it doesn't work I'll just give you a refund.
Chelsea you're beautiful!
Chelsea, you could sell sand to the Arabs !!!! LOL.
***** Thanks!
You never fail to plug your dvd/book..ever video you post!.... jeeees..! getting boring now.
The videos in our book and DVDs are all commercial free! :D
Seriously though, there's no way we could afford to create free videos for RUclips without viewers supporting us by buying our books and DVDs. RUclips advertising revenue doesn't come close to covering our production costs.
Did I mention the book includes free updates for LIFE, access to an exclusive photography community, AND 5 hours of never before seen video tutorials!?
It's cRRRaaaAAAAzzzZZZyyyYYY!!!!!
***** There you go again.... You both always mention your book!....
Wow...! either of you get it...!
Simon Collier Wait... so you don't want to buy our book, Stunning Digital Photography, even though it has 9 hours of videos and an exclusive online community?
Did you see our tshirts?
+Chelsea Northrup Hahahahaaha, excellent comeback. I love your videos, great information and really well made. You and Tony are amazing, thank you so much for making this available to us. I will definitely buy the Stunning Digital Photography book.
God Father, Jesus, and Holy Ghost.. -_-" nice video anyway.. :D
***** Furrrr???!!!! (sorry for the animal activist thing...can't help it)
I would have used people skin, but more people frown on that. I live in a puritanical culture, I guess.
not much creative
