- This week we decided to watch a movie that has been requested quite a bit since we started the channel and that I've been trying to get Toni to watch for years! This time we're watching "Interstellar". This movie is now the movie that we've done for the channel that Toni cried the most during! Come check out her first time watching this great movie!

My father passed when he was 61 at the start of 1998. His mother (my grandmother) died in 2002, four months before my daughter (her great-granddaughter) was born.
The music by Hans Zimmer should have won an Oscar. It was brilliant. Fans have often asked for INTERSTELLAR 2 but I'm not sure we will ever get it. One of the best movies.. certainly in my top 10 of all time.

Saved a few tears by missing the fact that Jesse died. It is subtly mentioned in the message explaining Grandpa died and they buried him next to Mom & Jesse - also when Murph says you gunna wait for your next kid to die? when they argue about dad abandoning them.

First time I watched this I used to also think about what if Edmund was still alive on his planet but then I thought about Coop saying they would lose about 50 years (relative to earth) in that last manoeuvre. It's possible more or less the same amount of time had passed on Edmunds planet and he died of old age by the time brand got there.
It's reasonable to add in the time at Dr Miller and Dr Mann's planets as well. We know Miller's planet was really close, we can conclude Mann's also had to be for MDamon to be late 40's-early 50's when Cooper arrived. 10 years Lazurus launch + travel time for Cooper/team + time at Millers planet + time for Mann to earn a reputation as "the best of us" means he has to be under different time rules than Edmunds. We know the pods do not delay aging as Romely states he "doesn't want to sleep his life away."
In the official novelisation it's confirmed Edmund died in a rock slide. We can see CASE digging out rocks from his pod in the movie. But you're completely right, he most likely would've died of old age by the time Brand got there regardless. It seems the rock slide had crushed him before they even left Earth as when they arrived in the new galaxy it was mentioned that he stopped transmitting 3 years ago.
This movie is one of the most beautifully created movies ever.
I went through about 40 comments, and I feel the greatness of this movie in many of the ways mentioned. I will add that Brand mentioned, "LOVE is the one thing that transcends time & space, maybe we should trust that. Even if we cannot understand it yet." For me, this explains the ending,... starting when Cooper enters the black hole. The ending was so deeply impactful and resolute trying to covey this message.

This is probably my favorite movie of all time. I have a strong bias towards space stuff, and this movie hits all the good notes. All wrapped in an amazing score by Hans Zimmer, which is the icing on the cake...

@@popculturallychallenged I laughed, so damn hard. The part about Zimmer falling asleep on his organ got me good, as did the part where they introduced Matt Damon in his solar blanket as "A baked potato"

I was watching this film for the first time during the end of my senior year (when even teachers stop caring so much lol) in high school on my phone on a website that allowed free movies to watch and my stomach DROPPED when he's watching the videos from his son and this his daughter 23 years later. Not a parent, but I understood the pain of literally missing your kids' ENTIRE lives.

This was absolutely one of my favorite movies ever I've seen it about 1000 times and I sob every time at the end. My dad was in the military and we also had to say goodbye to him but he always came back just emagine what it must feel like seeing your dad after 80 something years

Interstellar is my favorite movie! One of the things that make me love this movie even more is the soundtrack, and the fact that Nolan went to Zimmer with just one page with the core of the story: a father leaving his child to complete an important mission, with the dialogue "I'll come back." and "When?". He asked Zimmer to take a day and see what he could come up with. After just one day Zimmer came back with the iconic piano/organ piece, STAY, which to him represented fatherhood, having written it with his own son in mind. Gotta tell you, hearing Zimmer talk about the soundtrack, that with the organ it's distinctly human because you need air to play it, that you can hear the music breathe, adds just a whole other dimension of emotion to the movie

@@popculturallychallenged I'm also not sure how you guys take requests/suggestions, or if you take them at all, but I HIGHLY recommend the movie The Intouchables. The movie is in French, but it is worth it to have to read the subtitles; one of the greatest movies, and it's based on a true story. There is a remake in English called The Upside, but the original is better.
Lovely reaction as always. Not sure if this is a good suggestion but Manchester by the sea is an astonishingly emotional movie and has Casey Afleck in it.

I enjoy your reactions over most other reactors becuase they are sincere reactions. Not because of the crying, but becuase it feels genuine. Crying, laughter, anger, or happiness it does not matter as long as it is not faked like so many reactors.

When this film was released i went to see it three times. Most films i really like i see 3 or so times in the theatres while its there, but this film I went to see 3 times in the same day lol

The TV show, "The Expanse" is one of the most scientifically accurate shows while this movie, "Interstellar", is the most scientifically accurate movie.
As an Arizonan it always cracks me up to see reactors so shocked by the haboob (sandstorm). I’ve had to wait for buses to/from work in these.
Dr. Mann kept finding ways to imagine himself of being capable of accomplishing many things and then he kept failing. He thought his planet would be THE next human planet and he'd be the hero of mankind. He thought he'd stay with Cooper while he died; but then got overwhelmed with the consequences of his own actions and gave up. He failed at going forward with the mission because of his own hubris. He was a villain, yes, but I kind of get how/why he went insane. He and the other 11 astronauts left Earth 10 years before Cooper & Brand. He had been alone on his plane for 34 years by the time Cooper, Brand, and Romly get to him. I mean, look what happened to America & other nations after the COVID lockdowns. That was only 3 months & we humans are SO undeniably more messed up than ever before.
The movie is based on an original concept by producer Lynda Obst and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne and is set around 2067. In the event horizon/center of the black hole is a tesseract; a 3 dimensional representation of our future 5 dimensional understanding of time. If Cooper travels “up” or “down” in the tesseract he is able to view different moments in the past and touch the items in each time to communicate with Murphy. Tom, Cooper’s son, had a baby while Cooper was in space, but the baby (Jesse) died early on and was buried out behind the house and later so was Grandpa. Tom died 20 years or so before Cooper made it out of the tesseract and to Saturn. More of the scientific details are in Kip’s book, “The Science of Interstellar”.
The crew's shuttle was being pulled into the spinning black hole that they had named, "Gargantua", and they had no fuel to fly/pull away from it.
Cooper first released the robot, T.A.R.S., into the spinning black hole wanting the robot to try and gather data while traveling through the black hole. This way, if the robot gets found by someone they can try to gather the data and use it.
To prevent Dr. Brand from dying Cooper then released Dr. Brand's shuttle at a specific time so that the spinning black hole's gravity would slingshot/swing her off towards the other planet that they did not have enough fuel to get to using the ship alone.
When Cooper's shuttle gets pulled into the spinning black hole it begins to fall apart because of the strong gravity, but because the black hole was spinning he did not get pulled apart like we would with a stationary black hole. He ejects himself from the shuttle, but quickly falls into a TESSERACT. The tesseract that the future "humans" placed in the black hole for him is a physical representation of a 4th dimension for humans of today to make sense of. The future humans that built the three dimensional bookcase in five dimensional space essentially pinpointed a specific coordinate in the universe that was important to Murphy (obviously she became the most famous figure of Earth’s exodus so they knew she was the key) and used that point to send Coop. They did not know at what point in time he was able to communicate everything of importance to her, so instead they gave him a “ladder” of time to glide through and find those points in time for himself. In this tesseract Cooper is only seeing different moments in time of his daughter's bookcase. He can go to a time when she's very young or older and try to communicate by pushing her books. At first, he doesn't realize that he needs to help her build the space stations that will eventually house the people from Earth. So, at first, he tries to communicate with her just like the 'ghost' was in the beginning of the movie and he fails to get her to make him stay. When he realizes that this is something he cannot change he realizes he can also communicate with T.A.R.S. He asks T.A.R.S. to take ALL gathered data from the black hole and the future humans and encode it into the movement of Murphy's watch's second hand. Using Morris Code T.A.R.S. is able to share the info with Murphy. The entire time Murphy is doing her work to build the space stations Cooper is in her book case working with T.A.R.S. He is still alive.
Doctor Brand found out that the man she loved had found a planet that humans can live on, but he had died in a landslide. This is why his beacon had stopped earlier in the movie.
Cooper was guided by his love, which was a theme of the movie and is the only force we can conceive across time and space. This movie is about love. Love for your children, love for your significant other, love for humanity, etc.
Had Coop allowed Dr. Brand (Anne Hathaway) to seek out Edmund in the beginning , they would’ve found their new home immediately. Her love was guiding her as well, and even though logically Matt Damon’s planet seemed like a better bet (due to his fake data), her love was pointing true. Side note: I do still blame her for everything going wrong from Miller’s planet though, lol.
We all knew Toni wasn’t making it through that tearless! Interstellar is such a good movie. ❤ I laughed when Toni was like “Get out of my face” 😅 when you found out Professor Brand lied.

The science is really good. I think a big reason for this is that the director or producer of the film (I can't recall exactly which role), Kip Thorn, is an actual scientist - a Nobel Prize winning one at that. He recently (about five years ago) did work on the first Gravitational wave observatory, which detected neutron stars colliding by detecting the gravitational waves produced by the event. The observing instrument is called LIGO and uses the different reflecting times of reflected lasers to detect distortions in spacetime to the precision of subatomic scales, caused by gravitational waves.

During the water planet scene, you can hear a rhythmic ticking sound. It isn't just part of the music. Each tick marks a day back on Earth.

I felt so bad that the son kept sending the videos but wasn't there at the end. I understand that he was older but it was still sad. I wish Cooper would have shown more love / caring for his son instead of always thinking of Murph. I think he only asked about Murph and didn't ask about his son Tom. - Toni 🥰. I would be devastated if my father didn't ask about me after coming back from anywhere, though I was a dad's little girl. LOL - Toni 🥰

Hey David, i took note of your comment about Tom. I think Tom's personality more resonated with his grandfather. Since he was more practical in his thinking. ------- Murph And Cooper always had that exploring nature. I do understand your thoughts that his character was underdeveloped in the movie.

'Instellar' actually contributed to science; had papers published and everything. At the time no picture had been taken of a black hole, but in the interest of both cinematography and accuracy Nolan wanted one to appear in the movie, and appear real. An astrophysicist provided the special effects crew with all the math needed, and they plugged it into the systems rendering CGI, and what popped out was that iconic halo'd black hole. It looked foreign to them, so they sent it back to the scientist for confirmation. The scientist was a little surprised as well, but on consideration agreed this is what one would look like. Though light can't escape the gravity well, nearby light near the event horizon can be 'bent' around it. That compression of so much light around the edge gives the black hole the 'halo' appearance. Since then we've taken a couple of low resolution photos of real black holes and they do, in fact, look like this.

The sequence at 11:00 is so heavy and I cried just like Toni. From Coop leaving Murphs room, saying goodbye to his son and Donald, Murph running after him with the music swelling and the launch countdown overlapping. Its such a beautiful sequence. In theaters I was just in awe.
The poem is by Dylan Thomas about the death of his father.
I bought this on blu ray for my dad and myself on 1st day of home release. I saw it on the BFI Imax 1st day of cinema release ( an amazing experience) my dad watched it a couple of times but he said he didn't feel that he could watch the movie again particularly because of the ending of Cooper seeing his daughter as an old lady. It was too heartbreaking for him. Our dad passed away last year😢

I love that Dr Mann, the "best of us," explains why Plan A was necessary (to keep people from worrying about self-preservation over the collective good;") then we learn he hit the beacon out of self-preservation ("I knew that if I just pressed the button, someone would come and rescue me." The constant duality of his selfishness battling with his selflessness ("I'm going to save everyone, for you Cooper..." "this is about all mankind...") was just brilliantly demonstrated by MDamon. I absolutely HATE that Hanz Zimmer did not win an award for the music to this film, it's absolutely astonishing and worthy of the music theory classes it will be played in for centuries to come. A musical Mona Lisa.
Would love to see a reaction to Arrival. I think it is one of the best (if not the best) alien movies of all time.

Arrival is a beautiful, moving, smart, exploration of the nature of communication, how we connect with each other, and the nature of “choice”. It’s far, far more than an “alien movie”, it’s really a movie about humans, that just happens to have aliens in it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Cheers!

They definitely left it open for a sequel to be made there has been rumors over the years. so, in the future it will be interesting to see if it gets made. business wise it makes sense because it was such a hit film.

Edmunds was bound to be dead. It had been 2 years for the saturn trip, 23 years for Miller's planet, and 51 years for the slingshot around gargantua, plus probably a year or two of travel in between those events, which wasn't shown. Plus, Edmunds had left 10 years before they left. So even if Edmunds was relatively young (let's say 30, since younger than that is hard to credit with how accomplished he must've been) when he left, he would've been at least 107 years old when Brand arrived at his planet. I guess we could assume being near Gargantua during some of his own travel might've caused a few years to get shaved off, but considering he had no medical support, he likely wouldn't have survived long into old age regardless. Fun stuff to ponder!

a movie that play with your emotions like that, is simply a masterpiece. the music, by hans zimmer elevated is crazy too. because thats what it is all about in the end. evoking feeling, entertain u. grab u and shake the F outta u, emotionally. watch the behind the camera video about how hans zimmer created this soundtrack (in your sparetime, not reacting lol), it makes so much sense, it makes it so much more meaningful. It goes for every type of movie, it just depends on the genre and which feels the producer wanna hit... and who their composers are :p

Director, Christopher Nolan had theoretical physicist named Kip Thorne as scientific consultant on this movie. Kip studied Gravitational Physics and Astrophysics. Kip informed authenticity of Space Science such as General and Special Relativities that was theorized by Einstein. Meaning, astronaut traveling near speed of light, time slows down while man or woman live normal time. Man or woman lived to be old while astronaut stays same age. In other words, man or woman lived a long life on Earth. This concept has been proven because NASA had identical twins: Kelly Twins - Mark and Scott. Scott spent 1 year in space in ISS while his twin, Mark on Earth for research on twins. Scott aged slower than Mark. They are retired NASA astronauts.
Speaking of the science of it, Nolan was all about the details, even down to when they're in the spin trying to dock with the Endurance the reason Brand blacked out was she instinctually leaned her head into the spin so all the blood rushed away from her head. Cooper knew better from experience and leaned the other way. The movie is just full of little details if you're really looking and listening.
