    One of my favorite Christmas movies ever. I love how dark it is to the point of it being horror-esque. And I love the dark humor of it and how unhinged it gets. Frank’s speech about feeling that miracle all year round and not just Christmas never ceases to get me emotional.

    Scrooged,. like any flavor of A Christmas Carol is about redemption. The characters are easier to forgive big past slights because the theme is about forgiveness and not taking things for granted. It's a trope and simplistic, but the theme is universal and timeless.

    "It's Christmas Eve! It's... it's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we... we... we smile a little easier, we... w-w-we... we... we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be!"
    Fun Fact: This was Bill Murray's first starring role since Ghostbusters (1984).
    Gun Enthusiast Fact: The sling mounted GE M134 minigun used by Lee Majors in the beginning of the movie was the same one used by Jesse Ventura in Predator (1987).
    Final Bow Fact: One of the special appearances in the movie was that of actor John Houseman. He died on October 31, 1988, less than one month before the movie was released in theaters on November 23.
    Murray Family Fact: All of Bill Murray's acting brothers, John Murray, Joel Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray appeared in this movie. John's the only one that played his on-screen brother, Joel plays one of the guests at John's party, while Brian plays Bill's on-screen father.
    Historical Fact: When Frank (Bill Murray) throws water on the waiter he sees burning, he says he thought he was Richard Pryor to cover his insane behavior. This is a reference to an event in Pryor's life when he, while freebasing cocaine, accidentally set himself on fire and ran down a busy street in Los Angeles.
    What Script Fact: Bill Murray falling on his way out of the restaurant was unscripted and a genuine accident. Apparently, it was due to the stairs still being wet, after splashing the waiter with water, that caused him to lose his footing. Bill Murray ad-libbed most of his lines. In a 1988 interview with Philadelphia Daily News, Richard Donner discussed Murray's penchant for improvisation and described the experience of directing Murray as follows: "It's like standing on 42nd Street and Broadway, and the lights are out, and you're the traffic cop."

    The most 80s Christmas movie ever. Forget Die Hard, the movie set in December that has one Christmas song for the closing credits. This is literally who Scrooge would be in the 80s. A lot of people don’t like dark Christmas movies, but the Scrooge story is a ghost story. It’s a horror story. It should be scary and intense. The only 2 versions I recognize are this and the king of Christmas Carol movies, the 1951 Alastair Sim version. Those are horror films. And they should be. This has elements of comedy that actually work. The jokes are dark and sarcastic. And a villain who is a corporate TV executive? Can’t get more 80s than that.

      Die Hard is a Christmas movie because Christmas plays an active role in the plot and character development.

    • @jessecortez9449
      @jessecortez9449 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@RealBLAlleyDie Hard is a Christmas movie for the same reason Steph said Bill Murray doesn't have any real memories as a child. He watched TV to distract himself from his crummy upbringing.
      Americans have lost almost all of the traditions that formed a culture that they now cling to movies and pop culture to fill that void.
      Die Hard is a damn great movie, no doubt, but this meme of it being a Christmas movie shows that Christmas and it's cultural importance is just a shell of what it once was. That doesn't bode well for the culture that once claimed it.

    • @RealBLAlley
      @RealBLAlley 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@jessecortez9449 That's complete nonsense.
      First of all, America and the US in particular have little in the way of a singular, unique culture since we are a relatively new melting pot of many other peoples and their cultures. Only white "Christian" nationalists believe theirs is the culture we're all supposed to cling to, but they don't even know what that culture is since everything they claim to believe has been twisted and misinterpreted to serve an alternative agenda of hate, intolerance, and rampant commercialism.
      Despite the name, Christmas has virtually nothing to do with its namesake, and its self-anointed gatekeepers know nothing of the true meaning of Christmas which is acceptance, giving of oneself, and family. That's not cultural, it's a fundamental requirement to maintain our humanity.
      Here is the other problem with your assessment: I don't claim Die Hard is a Christmas movie because all I've ever done is watch TV, and certainly not to escape a crummy childhood. I watched very little TV growing up, instead focusing on reading countless books while indoors, and spending a significant amount of time outdoors. I built forts, swam, rode bikes, and as I got older I built go-karts and mini bikes and rode them. Then I built and rode real motorcycles, then cars, dune buggies, boats, planes, and anything else that moves. I continued reading voraciously while delving into more technical hobbies like building models and teaching myself basic electronics. I helped build our house when I was 11.
      In school I studied beyond the basic required curriculum, expanding simple reading and writing to study English, literature, and creative writing from grade school into college. That's the reason I was able to become an author after spinal cord and other health issues forced me to retire from working as a commercial, residential, and service electrician.
      Leading up to that I earned an Applied Science degree in Electronics Technology for my third round of college, which allowed me to earn my CET and GROL. I also have certifications in many other fields including law enforcement, HVAC, appliance installation and repair, and driving instruction.Trade based hobbies include woodworking and metal fabrication as well as plumbing, painting, roofing, tile setting, cabinet making, and trim carpentry.
      I also build computers and cook and bake, creating many of my own dishes and pastries. I was also a drummer in my youth.
      I list my accomplishments not to boast but to illustrate how little time I've had to watch TV, nor had a need to escape into it.
      No, I state with utter confidence that Die Hard is a Christmas movie because it adheres to the core values of the holiday I previously listed, and because the plot relies on taking place on Christmas Eve.
      I also do so because my literacy and broader academic and practical experiences have provided the intellect and perspective to embrace the joy of movies like Die Hard rather than waste my time applying a limited view of the world to destroy other peoples' joy.

      @@cinemawithstephthe moral of the Scrooge is he's still a dick after being visited by 2 ghosts and only after the final ghost does he finally realise that he's hurting himself and the people he cares about and those around him.
      Finally the penny drops and he realises he can stop hurting people. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in ourselves that we don't realise the damage we're doing to others. This movie is the extreme version of a guy being a dick and finally learning to be kind, if it was easy there wouldn't be any redemption. That said I'm pretty black and white when it comes to romantic values too.

    I definitely recommend The Muppet Christmas Carol, too. On top of being fantastic, it's actually probably the most authentic to the book too. The muppets are all amazing in their roles, and Michael Caine is brilliant.
    EDIT: Oh, and if you do decide to check out the Muppet version, try to make sure it is the complete version, not the theatrical version. There's a song that get's cut in the theatrical version that really emotionally helps the flow of the movie and the characters/relationships.

    Look, the entire premise of a A Christmas Carol, which Scrooged is an adaptation of, is ridiculous to begin with. Three ghosts come, force Scrooge to re-evaluate his life and his character fundamentally changes overnight. No one considers this to be realistic, but that doesn't matter, it's the message of hope and redemption that does. Claire and Frank's relationship is no different. If you can buy one in this supernatural story, you should be able to buy the other. Not all fiction needs to be or even should be analyzed in a literal way. That said, most versions of A Christmas Carol don't have a romance sub-plot for Scrooge. He's usually depicted as someone who chose career over love a long time ago and it's left at that. Personally, I love A Christmas Carol and I think it's one of the most important stories our culture has to tell. I'm glad it keeps getting remade. I like Scrooged, but my favorite version is one that came out recently: the 2019 production of A Christmas Carol by BBC and FX, starring Guy Pearce. It's an even darker version than usual, but all the more effective for it.

Ebeneezer Scrooge is a bastard at the beginning of the story/movie (just as Frank Xavier Cross was). But the three Christmas Ghosts show him the error of his ways -- and the ripples of pain and hopelessness he creates for the future -- and he learns a huge life-lesson. He has his moment of truth and he comes away with a new intension to mend his life, mend the broken relationships in his life and work to make his city a better place to live for all/many. So, you may have to keep you "black and white" view of things in check, maybe rein it in, so you can enjoy Ebenezer's journey from darkness back into light. Bless you and Happy Holidays!
