"It's Christmas Eve! It's... it's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we... we... we smile a little easier, we... w-w-we... we... we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be!"
Fun Fact: This was Bill Murray's first starring role since Ghostbusters (1984). He had been living in Paris, and had seriously considered giving up acting altogether.
Murray Family Fact: All of Bill Murray's acting brothers, John Murray, Joel Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray appeared in this movie. John's the only one that played his on-screen brother, Joel plays one of the guests at John's party, while Brian plays Bill's on-screen father.
Historical Fact: When Frank throws water on the waiter he sees burning, he says he thought he was Richard Pryor to cover his insane behavior. This is a reference to an event in Pryor's life when he, while freebasing cocaine, accidentally set himself on fire and ran down a busy street in Los Angeles.

A classic. Of course, it's based on THE classic Christmas tale, but even among the adaptations it's a classic. Same with the Muppet version: You don't expect either one to be as emotional as they are.
The older your parents get, the harder this movie's Ghost of Christmas Past scene hits.

The fall in the restaurant was a total accident and not in the script. Donner just liked it so much he kept it in the film. The Bill Lambier elbow he gives Alfie Woodard in front of the elevator when the production version of the ghost of Christmas future steps out was also an accident. I can't believe you cut the scene where Carol Kane clocks him with the toaster out. It's the most iconic scene in the movie.

Props to Charles Dickens for creating such a timeless story. It just works for every generation, and always finds new ways to be compelling. And it is indeed the most adapted story of all time. And for good reason. I'd never seen Scrooged before and I'm not sure how or why...but thanks for doing this one, it was fun. 🎄

I always love the touch in this Christmas Carol version that the dark potential future also includes the negative influence Frank had on Claire. It nicely rounds out the bleak possibility that the Scrooge analogue that doesn't change will not only go unmourned and allow innocent people to suffer, he'll end up making good people worse.

  • @lisacockburn8362

Sure, they skipped some of the past and present Christmas. But I think it was because they focused more on his faults being heartless, greedy and ambitious rather than neglecting family and friends. I think those were virtues valued higher in Dicken's time than the late 80s.
But that said, the Ghost of Christmas Present is still my favorite character. (And that's in hard competition Past Ghost. I love that guy!) But I don't think I've made toast since 1988 without exclaiming "It's a TOASTER!"

  • @roguechevelle
    @roguechevelle Год назад +4

The Muppet Christmas Carol is still my favorite adaptation, though I'm still mad that Disney cut the whole scene with "The Love is Gone" it was on the VHS versions and on dvd under "Full Screen Version". It added a lot of heart to the movie and much more empathy for Scrooge. Brian Henson, Jim Henson's son has been trying to get them to add the scene back for years now. Anyways it's really hard to do a modern retelling of this story so it's great they were able to pull it off in this film.

i love this movie. It came out a few years after Ghostbusters and so was marketed in a way as a comedy follow up for Bill Murray being 'back amongst the ghosts'. The special effects were amazing at the time and it was quite a big hit. The critics did pick holes in the ending as they felt it was too sentimental, but for me, that breaking the fourth wall with such passion to sum up the spirit of Christmas was what made the film so unique and special to me as a kid, especially when I would watch the film on Christmas itself (on the VHS tape version I got for Christmas!). Wonderful stuff.

This movie brings back memories of my less than fun experiences in corporate America, still lots of very funny bits like when Robert Mitchum kicks the cat. Regarding the many traditional and other adaptations of Dicken's "A Christmas Carol", I think Alistar Sim's portrayal of Scrooge in the 1951 movie is the standard for everybody. The Muppet's version is the warm and fuzzy adaptation, "A Christmas Carol - The Musical" from 2004 is the musical version with the Rocketts but I had a hard time with a squinting Kelsey Grammer as Scrooge, "Scrooge & Marley" from 2012 is a gay version that comes across as tedious and uninspired, and while many don't like Jim Carrey and Disney's "A Christmas Carol", I thought while the 2009 film is a bit over the top at times, it's become one of my favorite Christmas movies. BTW - this is one of my favorite reaction channels. For instance, loved the reaction you guys had to "Psycho", esp. the jump scares!

Fun Facts: The cab driver/Ghost of Christmas Past is played by David Johansen and he was the lead singer of a punk rock band called The New York Dolls, as well as an actor. Later in his career after New York Dolls, he became an actor but he also released music under an alter ego called Buster Poindexter which he released the song "Hot, Hot, Hot" in 1987 (if you listen I'm sure you have heard it before). I just watched the video and saw Bill Murray in it with him. About 1:50 min in Murray is mixing drinks for Buster. lol. They must be friends. He played the Ghost of Christmas Past in 1988, could have even made the video around the same time they were filming Scrooged in NY. ruclips.net/video/EhZba-P7R18/видео.html He was also famous at this time for his alter ego, Buster, as being the head of the Saturday Night Live band, so he became a cultural icon of sorts. His music lives on in car dealership commercials and cruise ships. lol.

On an unrelated note, please add Home Alone 2 Lost in New York to your December reaction if you haven't already!

Superman, Lethal Weapon, Scrooged. Richard Donner was a master entertainer.

Its the same in the Dickens story, though. Ebeneezer only swears to be good every Christmas from now on when he sees his future death and how nobody cares that hes gone and they're selling off all his things because there is no family that wants them. He has moments throughout where hes moved by things like his sickly sister as a child and his old boss who he loved, but ultimately its his own demise that makes him panic into promising he'll change

"A Simple Twist of Fate" is not a Christmas film but it is still a nice film starring Steve Martin.
