I usually cannot sit and watch long RUclips videos however I watched every second of this and learned so much. I will definitely be watching Part 2 as well. Everything is explained is great detail.

I try to give as much info as possible to be as helpful as possible when I make a video. Jim was a great fit since he's of the same mindset. Attention to detail helps everyone be more successful. Thanks for watching!

Good full and detailed coverage of the material you chose to include. The surprise to me was that the bandsaw could be used as well as the miter and table saws. Both the blue tape and the zip ties use was instructive. I will seek out Part 2.

Thanks for the very kind comment. Jim is my club's resident expert on segmented woodturning. He definitely does a great job explaining and demonstrating the process.

Thanks for watching! You should be able to find a link to the materials in the video description. It's a link to the First State Woodturners website. If the link is broken, please let me know.

I love the video, it explains the entire process almost perfectly, the only thing missing is how to cut the distance of the segments using a digital gauge, it is curious but there is not a single video that explains the distance to cut the segments.

Hi and thanks for the comment. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say cutting the segments with a digital gauge. Perhaps it's just a terminology issue. At about 21 minutes into the video there is a fairly detailed discussion on how to determine the length of the wood strips needed and then how to cut those strips into segments for constructing the segmented rings. There is also a link in the description to a PDF file that you can download which has the same information so you don't need to take notes. If you need any additional help, just ask. Thanks for watching!

@@ScottsMiniWoodshop I am referring to the distance or length that the segments must be cut, to make the diameter of each ring exact, it would be good to know how to do it with a digital gauge since you do not talk about them in the video, and if you do it it is very short. Anyway, I appreciate your response. And then from a great 2024

Hi again and thanks for the reply. I believe what you're referring to is the segment length. Segment length is discussed in the video at the 31 minute mark. There is even a math formula displayed in the screen on how to calculate segment length. Please watch the video for a full explanation, but the formula is:
ring diameter, multiplied by pi (3.14), divided by the number of segments. The length is measured on the long side of the segment.
A full explanation of all the measurements needed starts around minute 25 . I hope this helps

Great video! I'm just starting out in segmented turning. One big question I have is related to structural integrity. It appears that bottom design for fully segmented bowls has size limits to solid bottom construction due to wood movement issues. This design appears to ignore that. I can't help wondering how the joints held up where the segmented ring meets the cross grain part of the base bowl.

Great question. Jim and I produced this video as an intro to segmenting for our woodturning club. We discussed this same issue while we we're making the video. I have the bowl that was made in this video and it's holding together very nicely. It's as solid as the day it was made. Apparently, with smaller bowls the wood movement is not significant enough to create an issue. Larger pieces may need a segmented or floating bottom. My suggestion would be to join a segmented turning group on Facebook or read the segmented turning section on the American Association of Woodturners online forum. The experts there are going well beyond the scope of the video we did and should be able to assist you with any questions you have on segmenting. Thanks for watching!

Also important is setting the blade to 90 degrees with an electronic blade meter.
