I'm building my first kit today. Got all the tools, thinner, primer and paint I will need. I really want to do it the best way possible and I've been looking at a lot of guides. This is by far one of the best painting guides so far. Thank you very much.

But I both 3 sport car models from tamiya, vehicles that I was completely fan, Renault 5 Turbo Rally from 1981/82. Formula 1 Williams Honda FW 11, 1986 from Brasilian pilot Nelson Piquet. I am completely new at building model cars and i have a few questions: 1. Does the primer have to be the same color as the color you want to paint the car? 2. Where can you buy the special spray paint and primer and does it have to be the same brand as you are using? 3. Where can you buy the "sanding sticks". 4. Where can you find that model car stand you were using , or something similar?
+Jim Dayton 1. No, but the lighter the color the lighter the primer should be, as it will be easier to cpver the primer. 2. It does not have to be the same brand, i just find it works really well. They should be available in a good hobby store or otherwise ebay. 3. have a look on ebay 4. it is a tamiya spray stand, again try ebay.
Jim Dayton you don't really need primer at all unless you are covering up some body work or are using a "transparent" paint that requires a different color base than the plastic itself. Most paints chemically bond to plastic, and all primer does is cover up detail, and cause more undue and un-needed work that will result in a second rate paint job. DON'T PRIME. Also I notice you asked where he got the model in the video...you just want one to practice on right? Buy on sale models at hobbylinc.com, or go to hobby lobby and use a perpetual online 40% off coupon. That way you can by 30 dollar models for 18.
Thanks for this. I've got an AC Cobra kit which was a present from a friend and I really don't want to mess it up lol. As a youngster I build aircraft and cat kits but normally painted them with a brush. I do remember when masking things off I seemed to lift the edge of the paint when removing the masking. Also when I did try a spray can I'd get an odd blob of paint spit out of the can which was infuriating.
Nothing. Primer is just used by "pros" for the best possible paint results. You can skip primer and go straight to the top coat if you like, BUT if you are painting a light color on a dark molded plastic, it is best to use a light colored primer first so the top coat will be as bright and as close as possible to the intended color--most paints are slightly transparent, and are more so in light coats, and you WANT light coats because light coats do not obscure details.
Ugh.. I just sanded my R32 tamiya 1:24 with 300grit, you think I'd get away with priming over that or do you recommend I go over it again with 600-800grit?
I definitely know you should at least 600 it then you could go over it with primer you'll see a lot of sand scratches with 300 even after you prime and paint it and it would make the final paint job look awful
Tamiya primer is one of the best primers for model cars, so if you can get that i would advise it. If you want to use hardwarestore primer, that is also possible. But it does not play well with other paint brands.

The Tamiya brand primer if a lacquer based primer that adheres very well to plastic. This particular product is thinner than regular spray so it lays down very thinly which dry very quickly. and is designed specifically for plastic models. Regular spray paint id for general use and it applies much thicker, and isn't recommended for models.
I have used Krylon brand spray primer on plastic model kits. It is cheap and can be found in many stores that have a hardware section. One thing though, the paint dissolves plastic! As long as you start off by spraying in very light passes from the start, you will be fine. Any heavy runs will definitely eat through the styrene, so just take your time. There is also white primer that can be used but gray is better to see the details with. After that, there is an incredible amount of different colors, metallics and clear coats made by this company that can be used and are much cheaper than paints from the model kit companies.
@@TheScalemodelingChannel I wouild disagree . There are very good chrome paints available that can replicate chrome in aerosol cans or airbrush . one paint being in the Alclad range. The chrome has to be first removed with oven cleaner from the part . This is best done by putting the part in a plastic bag and spraying the oven cleaner onto the chrome plated part. Seal the bag and leave for 30 minutes . Take part out with rubber gloves to avoid acid harm to skin. Place part under water and the chrome plating should wash off. . If it dosent repeat the procedure . Make sure the oven cleaner dosent come into contact with your skin or eyes.
I can put paint on and make it look like glass, my problem is when I buy a colour it looks good on the aerosol can but looks totally unsuited on the car. I have a habit of choosing awful colours for my models for some reason, I now paint my cars either black white or red!
Can i use automotive paint if i thin it down and shoot it through my airbrush ? I have a model i’m trying to make like my car and actually have paint for it . It’s a single stage paint . Thanks !
I just started building a Mustang GT boss 2013 .... It is my first build. I have a question why do we need primer? I don't use primer on the body but only the paint ant clear coat what happens? I already did that...and some bubbles have appeared on the surface u one looks really care fully. I yet have to do the clear coat. So was curious once the clear coat is applied will these bubbles go away and what should be poles done to get rid of that. I really want it to be perfect
First off, the first kit or model you build. Will not be perfect. Heck the 10th or 100th will not even be. You learn by doing. And by doing it over and over again. Don’t focus on perfection. Youll loose onterrest fast. Really fast! Primer helps the paint stick to the plastic. So is id needed. No, do i highly advise it to achieve a better smoother and stronger finish? Yes. The bubbles will not go away after the clear most likely. Clear is a transparant paint. That will mostly just make it glossy and not fix imperfections.
hi ive just started a tamiya impreza but it was squashed during storage, an A pillar has snapped and the body is bend out of alignment. Is there any way to solve this?
Hi there, your videos are really good. Thank you for helping out new starters with your exp! I have a kit that has a slightly bended chassis do you know how to fix it? Thanks
It's been a while since I painted a model. We used to use Easy Off fume free oven cleaner. It has to be the fume free version, because the other type will melt the plastic. Put the part in an old Tupperware container, spray and let sit for usually 24 hours. That's the way we used to do it 20 years ago. Someone else may want to chime in with a newer way or confirm if this way still works.
hello i need your help please reply me 1.do we need to prime the small part as exhaust and brakes 2.do we need to sand paper small part before prime 3.how we gonna sand the small part
1, if you want to paint them with spray paint or an airbrush, yes. 2, if you are going to mask and paint them in multiple colors, yes. otherwise, no not realy 3, with sandpaper......
Everything Ryan vlogs I think you can get away with not using primer, but make sure to Wet sand The body with 800 grit, then wash it with water and use light coats of paint
I have a question if anyone could help me out... I got the 69 nova kit and this is my first one I didn’t do any research so I painted the car wit a red spray paint before I sanded out those lines that he marked with a marker would I be able to now go back and do that then put a primer over the one coat of spray paint that I already applied to the car????
So i can just go to a hardware store and buy a set of paints ? I mean i dont have to worry bout it being dangerous that i dont use model kit paint ? I mean if i have to use all model kit materials its gonna cost me like a Auto Art model :D

I can put paint on and make it look like glass, my problem is when I buy a colour it looks good on the aerosol can but looks totally unsuited on the car. I have a habit of choosing awful colours for my models for some reason, I now paint my cars either black white or red!
How do you prep the body to remove mold release agents?
Can i use automotive paint if i thin it down and shoot it through my airbrush ? I have a model i’m trying to make like my car and actually have paint for it . It’s a single stage paint . Thanks !
Yes you can. Just don’t spray it on to thick and quick
@@TheScalemodelingChannel Thank you .. Love the channel and work you do !
+john malone Try heating it in hot water or with a hair dryer and bent it back in to shape.
What type of primer should i use? Im planning on a dark green color
I like the music
Hi, I was just wondering if I can use any type of primer, or it has to be only from Tamyia?
Player Player you can use any primer you want. But i found tamiya to work best out of a spray can on a plastic model kit
The Scalemodeling Channel alright, thank you so much!
The Sandman cometh
& The Sandman taketh away
Have been taking down notes. Love your work. Do a TOYOTA TE27, PLEASE.
Do i need to sand all the parts even the small ones before priming?or just body panels?
Just the body. And the parts that you want to mask of and add another color to
@@TheScalemodelingChannel okay thanks for the reply!
Gday Mate, love your videos. What grit paper would you sand down the primer with before top coat?
3000
When I saw what you are marking I thought to myself RIP place where K's calcomania should be
Hi there, your videos are really good.
Thank you for helping out new starters with your exp!
I have a kit that has a slightly bended chassis do you know how to fix it?
Thanks
heat it with a hair dryer and try bending it back while cooling down.
Hi and thanks, I will try that :)
Brilliant video. Thanks a lot.Could you please give us the name of a band playing in your videos?
Good, it helps.
What about if you used a colour clear
Is the Tamiya primer transparent? I’ve got one different brand primer and it’s transparent but I’m scared to use it because of transparent.
Tamiya is grey or white
The Scalemodeling Channel Thanks 🙏🏻
Made mistake on model. How would you remove enamel paint from plastic? Please Help!!
@@rgchristy Tku. I'll try it.
I love this kit because my favourite car is Nissan Silvia S15 so i have silvias (s13-s15) and i have this same kit mines red
And it was my first japanese kit that i build EVER

Mj Tingzon yes, 600 grit
K thank you so much!!! Cause I was planning to get a tamiya nissan skyline for this but ok again thank you som much!
Hey I have a question what US grits are you using as I seen on other videos you said they where different in other countries so are these US or no?
I use European grits. I don't know what they are in US grits
What type of stand is that you use for the spray paint?
Tamiya spray stand
Can I spray paint mine even tho it already painted
Can Testors Enamel Spray paint be painted over Gundam markers ?
I have no idea.
grap a plastic spoon use the marker on it then spray over it if it works then yes but im sure primer would spray over it easy
Test sample. Great Idea. Thanks
7:25 before sprinkle the primer, apply the enamel thinner ?
No
@@TheScalemodelingChannel a ha! Thanks
I would love to do this kit as It is one of my favourite car of not my favourite. Do you know anywhere I could get it in Canada
+Evan Nicol Maybe on ebay
What kind of grid sandpaper you using

Ok thank you good luck
hello i need your help please reply me
1.do we need to prime the small part as exhaust and brakes
2.do we need to sand paper small part before prime
3.how we gonna sand the small part
1, if you want to paint them with spray paint or an airbrush, yes.
2, if you are going to mask and paint them in multiple colors, yes. otherwise, no not realy
3, with sandpaper......
What's the first sanding grit(for mold lines). Thx for videos ;)
Whatever you preffer, as long as you sand the rough grits out
all you useing?
Do you have to prep your car?
Everything Ryan vlogs I think you can get away with not using primer, but make sure to Wet sand The body with 800 grit, then wash it with water and use light coats of paint
if i were to have spray paint for actual cars (primer. paint aswell) would that work just as good as tamiya brands etc
those are a bit out of scale. you very quickly apply to much
do you know of any spray paints that are leaning on a bit more affordable?
Nope
thanks for the reply
P.S i love your build videos

I have a question if anyone could help me out... I got the 69 nova kit and this is my first one I didn’t do any research so I painted the car wit a red spray paint before I sanded out those lines that he marked with a marker would I be able to now go back and do that then put a primer over the one coat of spray paint that I already applied to the car????
You can , or just leave it. Learn from it and fix it on the next one
The Scalemodeling Channel thank you appreciate the answer
great vid but some of the "casting lines" you sanded off were body lines/badges...
I know
Could you just paint the car after sanding it and without primer?
You could, but the finish will not be as strong and will not look as good.
So i can just go to a hardware store and buy a set of paints ? I mean i dont have to worry bout it being dangerous that i dont use model kit paint ? I mean if i have to use all model kit materials its gonna cost me like a Auto Art model :D
As long as its plastic specific paint. Shouldnt be a problem
Is it okay to paint it without priming it first?
Spray thin coats;)
Does anybody know if that stand he has the car body on is home made or you can actually purchase it if so where can I get
Tamiya spray stand. Links in the description
@@TheScalemodelingChannel thank you I appreciate that I really need a stand to put my model car bodies on cuz I can't exactly hold it my right arm is paralyzed so everything I do I have to do with my left hand and arm so it's very difficult but I always managed to pull it off but I'm getting tired of finding ways to put the bodies of the model car somewhere painting them and having issues with the paint and I believe that getting that paint stand is going to help me out a lot so thank you and I really appreciate it
when i sand before priming, the sandmarks always show through even on the final color.. and i mean they are plain as day. and i use 1200 paper!!
Do you only use 1200 grit. Or did you use other grits aswell?
@@TheScalemodelingChannel only the 1200, wet, before priming. i figured it would be better being less course, but it always shows through. i have gone to not sanding the body.
@@TheScalemodelingChannel only 1200 i did use 600 but thought going to 1200 would be less likely to show
Thats very strange. What primer do you use?
@@TheScalemodelingChannel i use the tamiya 87026 primer most of the time
Y’all think enamel rustoleum primer and paint would work good
