  • Victoria 3 mods are here and today we look at the Australia Flavour mod, a mod that adds, you guessed it, flavour to Australia in Victoria 3. Here's the thing, this mod is actually brilliant. I genuinely had a really fun time recording this as it creates a unique and dynamic game that I've not seen any other mod do. Huge respect to this mod as I can honestly say it's some of the most fun I've had in Victoria 3!

    Local Australian here, the states seceding appears to be a mechanic that's meant to replicate the actual historical division of Australia into multiple administrative areas which would then later form the Federation.
    Also, Canberra is its own "state" because later it will become the capital because the two largest states of Victoria and New South Wales could not decide on who should have the capital (Melbourne or Sydney respectively) strictly speaking Canberra in reality is a territory which is a bit different but for gameplay purposes, it's a state.
    For some extra context, each colony in Australia had its own rail gauge, and still *today,* well over a century after Federation, though much of the freight rail has been converted to standard gauge, passenger rail is still not completely unified in each state.

    I was raised in Australia, so it's really interesting to see this mod and the research that went into it. They've done a great job going into the oft-unspoken parts of history, especially around the horrendous things done to the First Nations folk. It's also really interesting watching Laith take actions whilst knowing what's coming up historically (like the seperation of NZ, the formation of Canberra, the Gold Rush, etc.) Great video, and great mod!!

      (one of the creators of the mod here, thank you for the kind words!) Oft-unspoken, but so crucial to understanding why Australia is the way it is today. One of the great things about making this mod is being able to show the Frontier wars as a central pillar of Australian societal development, and to show it to a more general audience. The better people understand the abhorrent actions of the past, the better we can reconcile with them in the present

  • @liamwallace2007
    @liamwallace2007 Год назад +204

    As an Australian who actually knows about the Frontier Wars, I just saw the pop up and I instantly went 😬. It was incredibly brutal with groups such as the Native Mounted Police taking and indoctrinating indigenous Australians from a few tribes over so they would have no remorse in tracking down and killing other indigenous peoples. It resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of Indigenous Australians and is very rarely discussed or taught in classrooms. I’m one of the few people who actually know about it due to doing modern history as a subject at school and was lucky enough that it was one of the units selected where I went to school. Whilst there is more education being rolled out (I believe/hope so) Australia is still far away from acknowledging and atoning for its past.

      (one of the creators of the mod here) I'm glad that we got to represent it, but I do think there's a lot more that we could do to represent it properly. It's extremely difficult to portray these horrible horrible events whilst also giving the player options to do. It's a never-ending battle between historicity and good game mod. I'd like to think weve done ok so far, but theres a lot more that we can do to really show how horrible it was and also how it is a central part of the history of Australia and cannot be ignored

    • @liamwallace2007
      @liamwallace2007 Год назад +23

      @Marie Tsuki As you point out Wikipedia is an imperfect source, looking at it myself it seems far from the truth. Firstly, I think making the differentiation between 'Australians and Aboriginals' is certainly insensitive (although I hope you don't mean it that way) due to the fact that Aboriginal Australians were the first Australians, a variety of cultures that have existed for the last 60,000 years, with the ones you describe as 'Australians' being European colonizers. While I don't dispute the fact the Aboriginals in (VERY FEW) instances did carry out raids against Europeans (the only tribe that was the initial aggressor in all my research were the Kalkadoons) it was largely Aboriginals being targeted by Native Mounted Police and British forces due to unbacked claims made by farmers and pastoralists. I don't know where you read that Australian authorities tried to minimise casualties (I suppose during initial contact they may have tried to maintain a type of peace) but I can assure nothing would be further from the truth. Also if you look percentage wise in terms of population it was devastating with estimates being around 800,000 Indigenous Australians in 1788 down to 60,000 in the 1920s (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics), that representing a MASSIVE decrease of over 90%.
      Australia also perpetuated the Stolen Generations from the beginning of the 1910 up until around 1970s (it is argued that it went on longer) which led to the illegal abduction of Indigenous Australian children from their families under laughable pretenses from the Australian Government (the impacts of which are still felt today). Whilst there are issues in regards to the Australian Government I won't get into that but I do believe we are one of the 'better' (if such a word exists) democracies but Australia was built on historical half or mistruths (the Indigenous population was almost never the initial aggressors against European colonizers). So I 100% believe that reconciliation is the right path for Australia, especially since Indigenous Australians are far worse off in our nation. Nothing will ever truly rectify what was done to those who were here before us, but I hope that we can make it better (there is an upcoming referendum in Australia about this, but I've gone on long enough, if you're interested look up Voice to Parliament).

      No, we personally didn't expel them from their land, we personally didn't pull the trigger, but our ancestors did. Hell, the stolen generations only ended 50 years ago. Were they indigenous, there's a chance my PARENTS (who are still very much living and breathing) would have been affected by it.
      The absolute least we can do is apologise on their behalf, and it's our duty to do all we can to reconcile. To say we've "acknowledged enough" is downright insensitive.

    As an Australian myself, I approve of this flavour mode; I will be listing some historical facts (that I can remember) for you since I know you are a history nerd! Firstly, I will say this, our history is really terrible for the things we done against the Indigenous people and the stain of our past still lingers to this very day.
    On the topic of Indigenous folk, this leads to history fact #1: In the Australian Constitution, there is a section speaking of New Zealand as it suggested they should Federate with us, but they didn't for many number of reasons, one being our Indigenous laws versus theirs (New Zealand has the best Indigenous laws) but even though they denied to join, they are welcome to join Australia has a State to the country (as stated in the Constitution).
    History fact #2: The invasive species were a massive problem, from my homestate of Western Australia (WA), which funnily enough the rabbit event you saw, did lead to WA having to be a massive fucking fence to keep the rabbits to the Eastern; they got around it 3 times in the north since we build the fence from South to North; so there's 3 large fences within the state.
    History fact #3: The federation's conversations and discussions took a long time because there were many issues or subjects about which and what laws from who's colonies should be followed; one of them being railway width; each colonies' railway lines had tracks of different width and of course, one colony simply couldn't stand using another colony's system because that's a sign of submission
    and to top it all off, after you hit the meme mode button; one of the funny australian memes you did without realising it was federating without Tasmania; it's a well known joke here from other states that Tasmania doesn't exist or isn't apart of Australia.

Feral canels are apparently a problem in Australia and that population can double in 9 years. So to Australians out there, get your hunting licenses and start eating camels or maybe you can find other better uses for your invasive species, but all the means good luck to you guys and i hope you can keep your beautiful natural wildlife alive. "i don't want a button to do tragedies"
    Laith, i agree with everything else you're saying but i disagree with this one. The ability to be in the shoes so to say of an "evil" dictator or policymaker in my opinion is one of the most interesting things in a game. Especially if choosing that tragedy comes with a big advantage. So you are now in a position where you're technically better off, but you did just shoot yourself morally or in the long term. It goes to show you that, when you're in that position of power and you view everything as charts and number, you're willing to do some pretty horific things

    Hello guys today is the seventh day of historical facts already!
    On the tenth day you can request someone and Im going to research it.
    Ashoka:
    Ashoka popularly known as Ashoka the Great, was the third emperor of the Maurya Empire of the Indian subcontinent during 268 to 232 BCE.
    His empire covered a large part of the Indian subcontinent, stretching from present-day Afghanistan in the west to present-day Bangladesh in the east, with its capital at Pataliputra.
    A patron of Buddhism, he is credited with playing an important role in the spread of Buddhism across ancient Asia. Ashoka's edicts state that during his eighth regnal year (c. 260 BCE), he conquered Kalinga after a brutal war, and the destruction caused by the war made him repent violence. This claim is omitted in his inscriptions found in the Kalinga region, possibly because Ashoka considered it politically inappropriate to admit his remorse before the people of Kalinga, or because the claims made in the edicts are not fully accurate and are meant to impress the people of other regions. Ashoka subsequently devoted himself to the propagation of "dhamma" or righteous conduct, the major theme of the edicts.
    Ashoka's edicts suggest that a few years after the Kalinga War, he was gradually drawn towards Buddhism. The Buddhist legends do not mention the Kalinga War at all, and variously state that Ashoka converted to Buddhism after being dissatisfied with the leaders of the other faiths or after witnessing miracles performed by Buddhist leaders.
    They credit Ashoka with establishing a large number of stupas, patronising the Third Buddhist council, supporting Buddhist missionaries, making generous donations to the sangha, and even persecuting non-Buddhists. Ashoka's existence as a historical king had almost been forgotten, but this changed with the decipherment of the Brahmi script in the 19th century. Historians connected the titles Priyadasi and Devanampriya mentioned in his edicts to the Ashoka of Buddhist legends, and established Ashoka's reputation as one of the greatest Indian emperors. The emblem of the modern Republic of India is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka.
    The name "A-shoka" literally means "without sorrow". According to an Ashokavadana legend, his mother gave him this name because his birth removed her sorrows.
    He was also called a "Chakravartin" this title is only given to people who united the entire indian subcontinent under their rule.
    "The commentary is going to be me being upset" Like the last video where you got almost insane? It's funny so I really don't mind.
    Have fun reading guys :)

    It is day 120 since I asked you to do the challenge with Croatia in VIC 3 but in one of the videos, a good person named Andraip (Thanks for all the help) said it has a few flaws so it's time to correct them. So when you start playing as Croatia you have 15 years to get your independence, after that you cannot ally, get in a defensive pact, and you cannot be under any kind of protection and you must rival these powers as soon as possible: Austria, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Ottomans, and all nations from the Italian boot. You also must embargo all those nations and cannot enter their custom union nor can they enter yours. You cannot be in an alliance with any of the top 10 nations, including a defensive pact custom union, or protectorate, but you can trade with them. AI must be put on the default settings in case it isn't. If you ally let's say Portugal, and later on they get into the top 10, you must break the alliance. You also must stay monarchy all the time. Form the Danubian state with Croatia following these rules. (FYI incase I didn't make it more specific, you cannot join anybody's custom union you must always at all times have your own market)

      @Maiyn Thanks! I'm not ATSI so I'm a bit unsure on how to go about doing some of these things in an appropriate way. What are your thoughts on when doing some of this stuff about playable indigenous tags and giving a kind of split sovereignty or something, that many of the indigenous groups are amalgamated together to represent a broader pan-aboriginal identity? With there being so many different indigenous groups, it feels a bit tricky to do it right.

    You ever try the old world blues mod for hoi 4? Even if your not a fallout fan there is some really cool stuff anyone who is into alternate history can enjoy. Also I find the added mechanics like being able to add cores make it more fun when it comes to building nations. Also who doesn’t like an ai the thinks it’s the reincarnation of Moctezuma.

    The failure to model any real kind of 1848 is what gets me. That is such an interesting year all across Europe and even in other parts of the world. Does Metternich even come up in the game? I'm glad people are putting in flavorful ways to play the game with Mods, but it really shouldn't be the player's responsibility to make the game interesting.
