Got my first electric drums this week, been playing guitar 30 yrs but at 50 I’m fulfilling a long held ambition to learn drums.. this video is invaluable thanks 🙏
Thanks Justin! I've played the drums since 2001. I stopped for many years and never learn how to play it the right way until I watched this lesson rudiments. 😹✌🏻
Ahh yes with so many rudiments i gonna have to work on these first, I dont have a drum set yet but I just have a practice pad and some drum sticks I got from the hank Williams museum in AL. Soon ill be shreddin on some actual drum sets in no time
I finally got myself a practice pad 2 weeks ago 🖤 I'm 30 and haven't had a full kit since I was 3, but I thought fuck it lol time to be good at something
This is a great video. Have my first set of Vdrums turning up tomorrow having not played in 20 years. Teaching my kids so actually learning these rudiments properly will be great for them as I didn't get taught this!
Hey Justin, old guy here trying to learn drumming. I have a Nitro Mesh kit coming next week. I found your videos while searching for reviews on the kit. Great stuff! I'll be watching for more, thanks!
Demonic Sweaters Do you know if many ambidextrous drummers have trouble choosing a dominant hand or finding a natural grip? I keep trying match then traditional for each exercise figuring one will really improve over the other.
Great video! I've been tapping on things for years now and decided to buy a snare practice pad. Great starting point and explanations, my left hand needs more work than my right for grip and just in general. is there a way to train the left extra?
What I tend to do is go through the rudiments and work on keeping the stick height of both hands the same. In your case this will mean lowering the stick height of the right hand to match the left. Since your left hand will be working at full force it will force it to get fast quickly while the right hand will get a breather until the left hand catches up.
Another brand new drummer here too watching in the UK. Purchased the Nitro Mesh kit during Covid lockdown, always fancied learning to play drums but have found it’s a lot harder than it looks. Still, nothing else to do over coming weeks, thanks for your uploads.
I gotta crappy 10yr old electronic kit but will be practicing rudiments each day. Trying to build some sort of foundation while I save for a proper kit.
Having a real hard time to get this down. Feels like my whole rythym is off and im sure it 100% is but i can play a few simple beats. Is it accented I guess? Feels like my attempt is boring and not how you did it. Back to practice I go
Hey Justin! Thanks for the series. What is the best way to develop timing with rolls? I want to be able to roll for a half or full measure and come back into a beat. I subbed your channel a while ago while learning audacity and somehow missed all your great drum videos! Thanks!
Is that the only way to hold the sticks? I have kind of short fingers, especially my pinky fingers and holding the stick the way you showed gives me very little pinkey control on the rebound, but if I hold them with my palm sideways, thumb on top, index finger underneath for the pivot I can get great control with my ring and pinky fingers. Is that ok, or will it affect other areas of my playing?
Yes, learn to hold the sticks correctly. Don't form bad habits in the beginning of playing. The way you are describing sounds weird and yeah it may work for you now, but I would imagine will create many limitations down the line.
I would disagree. There are different ways of holding them and do what feels natural. You can play with the sticks in French or German style with your hands in different positions - this video explains what i mean best - ruclips.net/video/CzSjJCKPBaI/видео.html
Thanks for this video. For the double and triple rolls (triple rolls for example) are the second and third strokes just rebounds by the pad, or is it you hitting it three consecutive times?
Hey I could use some help, I've been playing drums for 8 years and only really play traditional grip. I've never really tried practicing rudiments until recently. I'm still doing the beginner rudiments but I always see people practicing in match grip. Should I switch when practicing or just keep the grip I'm comfortable with the most? Thanks !
nice video, I will buy an Alesis Nitro very soon. I am sorry is maybe not the right video to ask, but I would like to know which are the measures of your drum rug ? thanks
I have never drummed before but always thought it looked fun. I have 2 questions. Firstly, how far up the stick do you place your hands to hold it correctly? Or does it depend on the size of your hands? Secondly, why do people practice on the pad instead of the drum itself? Isn't the feel different? Thanks.
Place your index finger out like your pointing a gun with your thumb up too, now turn it in. Place the drumstick on your finger finding a balance point, not to where it’s balanced in the middle but where the tip is on the pad lightly. Now wrap your finger around it, place your thumb down and turn in. Hard to explain through comment but that might help.
People likely just laugh a bit at your name and don't worry too much about it. If only they knew why you use such a name, I think they would be just a bit more concerned.

THANK YOU FIRST VIDEO THAT TOLD ME HOW TO HOLD THE DAMN STICKS
Billy Cobham marched with our horn instructor and he came to our practice in 78 for BD. Gadd, Sextpn, McKinnon, Shrieve, etc all marched drum corps.

Try just doing single hits with only your left hand (L L L L L L L) or maybe paradiddles in order to gain rhythm with both hands ( R L R R L R LL)

You can do either way, but try to keep the bounces clean and even sounding
Wow😯😯😮😮
Hey are you using the Alesis Nitro Mesh kit
Yes he actually is! I have the same kit
Please the double stroke hw do u bounce it twice
Just by practicing. First start off by letting it bounce multiple times, and over time you'll get more control and can clean it up.
You got to bounce
Let go
Very nice

3x4 feet fits it perfectly
This may be a stupid question but if you're playing with a left handed set up should the rudiments be reversed or played the same?
All rudiments can be played left or right handed. The better you get at both, the better off you’ll be!
I have never drummed before but always thought it looked fun. I have 2 questions. Firstly, how far up the stick do you place your hands to hold it correctly? Cant believe i get to have a drum lesson from MJK himself!
Which practice pad is that? I've not seen one like that yet.
It's actually not a practice pad, but the snare drum on the Alesis Nitro. I just had the sound turned off.
