You have so much patience and are not in a hurry to HURRY US! Thank you for these exercises and continuing to encourage new and older players. MOST other instructors want to move on to the next rift quickly.
I love this concept. I'm following the recommendation of doing the lesson every day for a week. As the week has progressed and I've become more confident, I've found that increasing the video playback speed is keeping it challenging.
Thank you, Eliseo! I love to practice along with your video. It's very comforting having someone walking me through it. It makes it a lot more motivating too.
Drums for some reason came really natural for me. The first time I sat at a drum kit I was able to play basic beats and 10 mins later did my first tom fill. I played snare drum in band in 6th grade (1998) so I knew basic sticking at least. Anyways, I never practiced and am self taught. Which means I kinda suck especially since my kit was packed away for 8 years, so I'm starting from scratch and going back to a single pedal. This is going to help immensely, thank you. I didn't realize how important it is to always practice with a metronome. I had been speeding through my fills and never noticed.
Hi! I’m a veteran musician and fairly new drummer, so I was able to get all of these patterns relatively quickly. However, your teaching is incredible in this, and you did a great job!
Not only do they move on too quickly, they also expect you to memorize the sticking right off the bat. I have a background in melodic percussion, im used to having sheet music in front of me 😅. I can't think about tempo, stick height, technique, dynamics, and the sticking all at once! It's too much
That is true but if you get better at sight reading. Then when they throw the sheet music back at you. You will be able to quickly read it and that will make you better at drumming(Snare and Drum Set).Little bit of advice.
This made it so easy for me to improve upon my sticking. I love your encouragement as we go through together. The best teacher I've ever had and you aren't even my teacher! I wish I could like twice!
This video was a long time ago. As was the last comments. So illm just commenting bere to say this is still helping many people in luding myself today and i am over the moon i got this in my sight as assistance for the future. Thanks so much and please continue to create drum related videos. Your style of teaching is incredibly understanding and accommodating to many peoples styles of learning. Please do more like this. So good. Thank you. 🥁
Thank you! I am going to high school marching band next year and I want to play snare drum. I need to improve my counting but my stickings are going well. This is helping a lot thank you very much.🥁😀
I love this exercise!! I just began playing the drums and have used this exercise for the past 3 days and today I was able to get through the entire exercise without making a mistake!! Thank you!, can you tell me what you have the metronome set at for each exercise as the tempo gets faster?
I’m glad you like my comment! Your videos have been extremely helpful!! Could you please tell me the settings you use on the metronome for the increasing tempos for each sticking exercise, please?? I’m so grateful!! You’re a great teacher-encouraging, patient, giving several ways to think of sticking and keeping time & more!!
@@AcerArcYT I don’t think I’m quite that good but I’m definitely improving at a steady rate! I’m even getting my double roll going faster. I think one of the most difficult things is that I’m left-handed and so the sticking on the drum pad is not a problem but I’m wondering if it’s going to become an issue when I play with a real full set of drums and cymbals. Thanks for your comment! I hope you’re doing well! Let me know your thoughts and opinions if you have any.
Thanks for the video, I’m new to drumming and have been doing this routine for two weeeks and my instructor is impressed with my progress. Mind you I’ve had zero music training.
That's great Jim! I'm glad it's been helping. Keep practicing regularly and good things will happen. I have other videos you might find useful that you can find on my RUclips page under the beginning snare drum section. Good luck and feel free to let me know how you're progressing.
I did know this stuff but I didn’t know on how to play it right there are so many patterns and I like that, and this practice helped me out a lot. Thank you
I always loved durms .this is my first ever drum video and it was not hard at all . But I wish I can play at school I picked the baritone . Because my whole family plays it. And this is not hard and I bearly got in to this like two days ago. Thank u so much
A backstitck is when you use the back of your stick to play instead of the front. It's just a visual mostly used in a matching band drum line setting. If done well, it can look cool. If you're just getting started, I'd recommend just doing the sticking patterns.
RUclips has a feature where you can do the playback speed 1.75x faster and 2x faster. You can also make it more advanced by taking a metronome and doing them at a faster tempo.
I made this video awhile ago so I don't recall the specific tempo I used. I do remember that I started slow and gradually increased the speed with each exercise. I think I did something like 2 clicks faster with each exercise. That's something I do when I teach it live.
These exercises are great for a practice pad! As far as more advanced lessons, it's hard to know what the next step for you would be without seeing you play first. I would recommend taking private lessons with the best teacher you can find. Do you have any videos of yourself playing I could see? Have you played any solos or etudes before. How would you describe yourself, beginner intermediate, or advanced? I have some more beginner snare drum videos which you can find here: Beginning Snare Drum: ruclips.net/p/PL3NNUNRUiR2WNXw0HYLWqCf-OkYb5_N6L Let me know if you have any specific videos you'd like me to make.
Is it ok if you miss a day here and there? Also after seven days of practicing this do you keep doing it periodically? Or has the foundation been laid so to speak? Thanks for these great videos!
Practicing daily is a great way to improve quickly. That being said it's a good idea to rotate what you are practicing. For example practicing the sticking exercises Monday Wednesday Friday and roll exercises Tuesday Thursday Saturday is a great way to work on more material.
The first problem right off the bat I see is that this is a beginners simple warm up exercise and is suppose to be counted as 2 groups of 4 (1234 / 1234) not a in odd time counting of 1 group of 8. Secondly counting in odd time signature only the first syllable of seven is said and not last half of the syllable. The 2nd syllable half of seven would be counted as another note /hit. Also for beginners a click or peep sound they can’t play with so it’s much simpler to actually have a snare drum hit sound. Other than that the lessen is solid.
any pointers on how to make it not feel like your left hand isn't yours while simultaneously feeling every movement of your left hand through your entire body? I really have no idea how to explain the sensation I have in my whole left arm from shoulder to finger tips.
Hi Kristin, thanks for your question. If your left hand is not your dominant hand, then it's completely normal to feel less in control when using it. Doing these exercises will help get both hands sounding and feeling closer to the same. As far as tips go, I would just say use your right hand as your model. Practice in front of a mirror examining your hands like a scientist. Ask yourself questions like: do my hands look the same, am I holding with more tension in one hand, am I using the same muscle groups in both hands (wrist, fingers, arm)? Practice slow to fast always making sure you are relaxed.
@@EliseoRael I think you may be the first person to actually respond. Thank you! I am somewhat ambidextrous, but it is amazing how foreign everything feels drumming with my left. I knew I'd have weakness and lack control from my attempts to learn before but didn't dedicate myself enough. the sensations it sends through my hand and arm is beyond odd to me though, like I feel it in my stomach. I'm using this shelter in place to finally get into the routine of practicing every day. Thank you!
