  • People have used draft animals like horses, oxen, and donkeys for thousands of years to bring logs to where the wood needed to be. John Sarge goes over several tools that helped people wrangle logs when modern tools were not an option.

How do oxen perform in the winter? I’m interested in oxen for winter logging in Montana.

Thank you for this video. I'm up here in Ontario, Canada where no one is using oxen so I am teaching myself through virtual resources. My two boys are ready to pull their first load. However, while I have the identical yoke hardware, I have never seen how to clip on loads at the yoke. Might you include in your videos all the hooking up so us neophytes can clip loads on properly. Also, I have been told to use a pole for dragging loads with my oxen calves. Might you include pole hook ups as well as chain so I can see the hardware associated with it? Our logs in our forest average a 10" diameter, even deadfall. Would a log tong work on that size of log? Finally, are you not worried that the log will catch on a rock or other debris dragging the butt end flat on the ground? I would worry it would hurt their shoulders when the boys meet sudden resistance. Is there a chance the log might tip up? Again thank you! I found a source of log tongs today after watching your video. Will get hubby to watch it too!
