Reimu crying as she sits on the steps of the shrine, waiting for her mom and Rumia to come back, always gets to me. It's so sad man, she doesn't know what's going on
I absolutely love Little Reimu, it was one of the first Touhou fanworks I ever watched, and man, I cried like a baby, I would recommend it to anyone who's still a bit new to Touhou.
Same here! I watched it back in May as I was still fairly new to Touhou. It absolutely destroyed me, but I appreciated the Touhou fandom even more for making something so emotionally gut wrenching. Then I watched KKHTA and I was destroyed again
Honeslty I actually think it works well as its standalone story given the only real scene where you need some context is the part where Yukari seals Rumia
Its all time classic for sure. Its kinda sad that over the years we are getting less and less serious works like this that really focus on brining unique interpretations of characters.
@@GensouChroniclePoeple are still making them in japan, just that it rarely to never get translated and also take a different form in the form of MMD puppet show (not sure if this is what it's called) video.
@@GensouChronicle Sadly it seems that multi-part doujins that went really crazy with world-building are thing of the past. The best we have atm is "Magician who loved fake" I really miss artists like Personal Color being active, all of her stuff is amazing.
Masterclass in writing the manga is, this proves that any style of storytelling can be good. You know it’s not gonna have a happy ending you still read it, the way its structured always keep you guessing on what’s next
I love little "scraps" of lore by ZUN, such as "The ribbon tied to her hair is actually a charm", being turned into entire stories by the fans. One of my favourite, if not my favourite, fan stories that makes use of this is "The Shinigami's Rowing Her Boat as Usual" by Azuma Aya, the artist behind Wild and Horned Hermit, that takes a small part of Alternate Facts in Eastern Utopia (the whole shinigamis being somewhat able to sense when people are about to die, as well as her going "it's better if less people die, because that means less work for me!") and writing six chapters from that alone. What results is a story regarding the relationship between the divine (shinigami) and mortals, the taboo/danger from using divine means to interfere with the order of things, and I don't really know how to word this, but the way of how "human" Komachi behaves, whereas others cut from the divine cloth sees themselves very different from the common of the mortals, Komachi is very close to them, worries and cares for their sake. would recommend times and times again 4444/10 literally bought a physical version of it although I don't speak a lick of japanese edit: oh nice its briefly shown near the end of the video
With how humanized yokai and spirits are in touhou, I wouldn't discard that Komachi actually feels extremely sad while bringing the dead to their final destination.
@@sonicXstarhedgehogiirc, Komachi is actually one of the best Shinigami there is that despite her sloppiness, she did her job well enough and she always talk to the souls she carries to give them their comfort. And you never, ever want to piss her off as we can see in the fighting game, if she got serious, she is scary.
The fact that ZUN leaves minor tidbits like this unanswered is really such a big deal. Allowing fans to build off of loose ends and expand the world for themselves keeps the series as a whole engaging for so much longer. One guy can only make so much, but a few thousand can create enough to last a lifetime. Also, I can’t confirm this, but I vaguely remember hearing that stuff like this was intentional. Trying to stick with the doujin roots of the series or something like that. I’m probably misremembering honestly. Anyway, great video! And thanks for recapping the story a bit, I haven’t watched this in years and probably would have gotten a little lost.
Thanks! Yeah, I didn't want to just summarize the plot, but I felt a lot of the things I wanted to say are contextual. Plus, for a lot of people, the last time they watched it could have been around 10 years ago.
Oh i remember when i watched this manga with spanish subtitles when i was 12 and i didn't expect this to destroy me so much even without being a Touhou fan in that year
YouReimu certainly was an emotional ride for me, after I had finished watching it I had to process everything had happened, especially the ending. It's one of those fanworks that aren't grim dark that I can get behind and enjoy without feeling too depressed, I'm glad I got to enjoy this beautiful piece of art from the fandom, it's one of the many things I find inspiration for when I want to make my own stories in this ocean of creative works in this fandom.
@@GensouChronicle could you do an Imperfect Metamorphosis vid then unironically that story holds a place near and dear to my heart because its what finally got me into Touhou.
this is is the story and the sequel that got me into a the whole of Touhou a earlier this year after being exposed to it second hand for decades, all because of a touhou meme short i saw on youtube. i love it 10/10 would cry again
I think I can relate if you're talking about a space song short about little Reimu At the time I saw it I wasn't sure where to start from on touhou, but later in this year I finally know more about it (and cried)
It draws in newcomers and oldbies alike, it humors you with funny gags memes, it tugs at your heartstrings with the insanely good music, and it hits you in the face with the emotional beats. What more could you ask for in a Touhou fanwork? Definitely one of the best for real. I also like how you tied it in with ZUN's method of character creation and worldbuilding. Many people have problems with how he does it but honestly without his canvas we would never have had so much creativity in the fandom and so many incredible fanworks such as this (cough cough definitely not foreshadowing for the next part or something cough cough).
You know Little Reimu is a good story when you cry over someone talking about the story with the series' OST 🥲 Fantastic video, I would love an in-depth look to ReiReimu, and maybe even the lesser known Kasen-Yoshika one! Also seeing Flan wants to die made me smile :')
As much as i like Osana Reimu, SuikaKasen is for sure my favorite Joyful work, that story made Kasen one of my favorite characters in Touhou and is what made me finally read Wild and Horned Hermit.
SuikaKasen is my first exposure to Joyful, before Osana Reimu. What I love from SuikaKasen is that it takes the lore of each character from the original literature and worked it into a story that works nicely.
The greatest fanwork in the history of Touhou. After not being able to cry for about five years, I cried ten times. I couldn't stop crying. "Beautiful" is an insufficient word in describing the sentimentality and humanity of this story.
Osana Reimu is one of the very first Touhou fan projects i've seen and it BROKE ME, one of the very VERY few fictional stories that legit made me cry , a masterpiece in my opinion, it changed completely the image i had of both Rumia and Reimu and makes me wish her mother the nameless Miko was canon
and then there is reireimu, which is twice as long and made me cry twice as much. I even cried over the first five minutes of it just because of the flower garland reference at the very beginning, and then the ending was just perfect.
A wholesome but tragic classic. So much about Rumia, a minor character and enemy in all the games like many of the characters. Holds a special place in my heart as a story.
sTOP reminding me of THIS, im gonna die of dehydration due to all the fucking CRYING, its been 5 years sinse i first watched it and youtube decided to remind me of it all and i rewatched it, i still fucking love and it its still one of my favourite fanworks but omg i thought i would stop crying about this after 5 whole years thanks for this dive into it, i love osana reimu
Man, when I was a child my mother used to arrive very late from work and I used to wait for her outside my house, When I saw the panel of Reimu crying outside the shrine I totally broke down, it's the first time I cried with a manga 😿
Me a year and a half ago, after a year of touhou: i can do it,i'm a big 16 yr old,I CAN DO THIS,I CAN WATCH OSANA REIMU. Me after watching osana reimu:😢
I love YouReimu as well as it’s sequel, but my personal favorite story is Suikakasen. I’d really appreciate an analysis on that story as I believe that Suikakasen is one of the best Touhou-based fan works out there.
you miss the part that Reimu is adopted.. im just pointing it out cos many fans miss it... when Reimu was still an infant, her original home was caught on a crossfire between the Hakurei Miko and a powerful youkai. Reimu was found under the debris as seen on episode 7B 4:56
Both this & its follow-up were truly magnificent, and the emotional turns & tragedy were a perfect contrast to the often whimsical nature of Gensokyo itself. Though, much like in the case of the Project Moon verse & its fandom, I expected to find something special within the collective lunacy of this fandom.
Aw man, the story that made me cry for good And please, do Reireimu, I rarely cry like a kid over stories And I'll never forget how good this fandom is
I still get over emotional even when just watching a synopsis, but still it brings me joy hearing about it again. Your vids (like YouReimu) have inspired me my dude, until the next phantasm
Lovely video. The sequel to Little Reimu actually touches the idea of Gensokyo and how meaningful the works are that come out of it from fan creations it's very heartfelt. Would appreciate a part 2 and maybe a bit on the Suika Kasen one by Joyfull also.
Man, that's a really concise way to both explain Reimu's absent mother and the hole ribbon thing with Rumia. I very recently got into Touhou and your videos have been pretty awesome. I like how open ZUN leaves things, kinda lets the community can come up with ideas and stories that can fit what could have been.
...Wow. At the end, you really managed to articulate something which, in retrospect, seems to have subconsciously attracted me to so many Touhou fanworks over the years. (Well, that and the densely multilayered symbolism of the character designs.) Thanks for helping that penny drop.
Wasn't expecting to see Girls Last Tour at the end, it really is close to Little Reimu style of Slice of Life shenanigans all the way to make you attach to the potato duo, then it ends in a way you did know it would happen but nevertheless still feel at least a little sad for the way it happened.
Great reflection at the end. It is undoubtly the reason why Touhou it is what it is. Despite the years, Touhou remains and will remain a bastion of creativity and wonder, where anything can happen, where anyone is welcome. Good job on this simple yet passionate essay.
I absolutely love this story and it’s a sequal (ReiReimu) which was not as good, but still great as it goes into depth of what would happen if the charm broke
This absolute beauty of a fanwork is what cemented my fascination for the Touhou Project series, i am grateful to ZUN for creating this expansive world, and i am grateful to joyful for created this story. And to all other great fanwork creators from all over the world. Thank you for making this video!
Just got reccomended this. I haven't seen YouReimu yet but someday I might watch it. I do like the story though. And the artstyle is soooo cute! Thank you for explaining and telling the story of YouReimu.
Nice video. If I may suggest a similar video theme, you could talk about the absolute WAR CRIME that is Cirno and Reimu's One-Two-Three never having it's story finished.
Amazing video, and I appreciate the nudge to Zounose at 11:44. Fanworks (video essayists included) are what really make the universe of gensokyo so special for me. If you ever to do a video on the darker doujins you already hinted at, I am sure you would be able to do Zounose justice in Kaminare and DODO.
I got into Touhou around a month ago after I stumbled across KKHTA (I liked it a lot but man was it traumatizing) followed by me finding a playing touhou 6, I found Little Reimu from a goddamn RUclips comment and now I’m crying in the middle of the night.
Ah Little Reimu, a classic in my books. Another classic which I'm suprised no one here is talking about is KKHTA. Completely different stories but also plays with your heart.... in vastly different ways ofcourse. Anyways, thanks for covering Little Reimu, reminds me of why I love Touhou Project. The amount of content fans make for this series of games is insane.
I think this fanwork single handily propelled my love for both Rumia and the songs “Screen” and “Moonlight shines” ahead to astronomical heights. I cannot describe in words how hard I broke when the rendition of U.N came on.
Thanks for this. I've been into Touhou for a long time but never knew about YouReimu. It's an incredible reminder that the incompleteness of touhou - the ancient pixel art, the chiptune music, ZUN's peculiar way of drawing characters - are features and not bugs and are what allow the fans to keep imagining how else they can complete the canvas. Here's hoping for more great fanworks in the future.
[spoiler ahead] Because of this video, I decided to watch it before continuing to watch this video. And man, I did not expect myself to cry so much. I said to myself in the beginning that there is no way this is gonna make me cry. Then at the end, I was flooded with tears while being aware and giggling about it saying, "God damn it." Also, I really love your analysis, it really clicked like when you were talking about her mask and how Rumia got her killed in the end. In my mind I said, "Wow, there are still small details I haven't even noticed or understood. Whoever wrote this is a genius." All I want to say now is thank you for making me watch this masterpiece - which is both this video and Little Reimu.
Thank you for giving me a specific reason to go and watch/read this. It's very cute, and very bittersweet in the end... A good video, too- The art of ZUN painting is nice as well.
it tells its story without any hesitation for what it will say to others or how it will be judged. its a simple and basic structured story that still makes me cry. it doesnt have the most polished artwork or a mold breaking story, yet how honest it shares its ideas leaves it resonating with me more than the tragic dramas trying to illicit the same feelings. i ended up crying through the video, the story bringing me back to the days i watched it, and the pain i went through around that time, how the story hit me. it truly is a masterpiece built from the basics of story telling and drawing
Thank you for this video. I watched Little Reimu just because of it and I loved it so much, it made me really emotional and I cried a lot watching it. And ofc, this video itself was great, you explained really well one of the aspects that makes Touhou so amazing, good job!
Glad to hear you checked it out. If you enjoyed it, consider watching the sequel ReiReimu. There's also SuiKasen, which is I think the best that Joyfull has done.
Man i saw the first 2 minutes of the video, closed it and started watching all of little reimu. After 2 hours of video and 20 minutes of crying i am here to thank you. Still crying
Woww, i had literally just revisted the other tear jerker touhou fan work, concealed the conclusion, I finished it just a few minutes ago. Time to almost cry a second time.
One of my favorite Touhou fanworks, along with Reireimu…. I got to be honest with you, this did change me when I first saw it many years ago. It made me see fanmade works in a whole new light.
This and Reireimu is literally one of the best 2hu fanwork, that one moment where Reimu and Rumia hugs each other at the end of Reireimu is rewarding ASF.
I never really went below the surface with this or any of the related works(Never really watched much of them), but the vague concepts I caught from hearing people talk about it, and seeing certain spoiler images, like "she looked after Reimu", surely gave spark to a lot of fanfiction headcanons of my own that have more or less no real prior basis. That despite being silly on the surface, that this little bean is capable of being a functional adult if it needed to happen(Unlike the story, I think of her as always having been small), that she cut off contact with the shrine when Reimu became shrine maiden to not endanger the shrine's reputation. That the seal was simply a gift to prevent real issues. Certainly a lot more fun to think about than her being a joke character who is exclusively about the "being crucified is rad" and "Reimu just wanted to beat up a random kid"-memes. 1:11 b00k.(Reminder of how weird it is that people throw out Patchouli's character nearly entirely because a substancial part of it that isn't "book" or "Remilia's friend" is just kinda being mean, yet people also add similar traits to Sakuya instead. Ripperoni, Meiling, can't escape the bullying.) 1:16 Suika:"I miss my wife..."(Kasen, lol. I love the mythology memes in the fanbase) Satori:"I miss my sister..." Junko:"I miss hateful voilence..." 6:07 Because this definitly would have never happened before, surely. 10:58 Hey, it's my emotional damage, originally by the same person behind Girl's last tour, after which it got even more effective adaptations by the community at large. *cri*
I'm getting into Touhou very recently, my knowledge and consumption is very regular, queries more queries less, with something basic I finally decided to see it, had it pending and finished it recently, nothing will take away the place it earned for my part, great analysis, cried again with it. I will look forward to the next part.
Man, I love OsanaReimu. One of my favorite Touhou fanworks of all time. At first glance, it looks like a wholesome story, but continue watching and you’ll find that it’s not so much. It got me actually attached to the character with its storytelling. Finish the entire thing and you’ll be left in a puddle of your own tears and feeling emptiness (Just like it did to me). At least Reireimu, the sequel to OsanaReimu, had a much happier ending, though still sad throughout to watch, and especially the anticipation you have on what’s going to happen next. I don’t know why Joyfull (Creator of OsanaReimu and Reireimu) thought one day to create these stories, but man am I glad they did. Overall, one of the best Touhou fanworks in my opinion. I would definitely rewatch it for the first all over again. Thank you for this video.
I have just watched it and man. Osana reimu is what you can define as "a rollercoaster" first it goes slow and is happy but at a certain point you slowly reach the top before suddenly falling at immense speed in darkeness and sadness. The quotes also make this even worse " that was fake.. but... for me it was real". Is incredible how alot of these elements are extremely well placed nothing really feels like it doesn't fit.
The one gripe I have is that Reimu is somehow not the shrine Maidens biological daughter even though they look the exact same. I don’t know if it’s fanon but I thought only a hakurei by blood can use most of the hakurei techniques as well?
Oh man, obscure character in Touhou end up becoming my favorite but keep shifting so often depending on the year. When this was still new, waiting for the uploads to update, the finale broke MY HEART! The only fannmade one I like to this degree was a fusion RUclips Video between Dangan Ronpa with Touhou, but idr who made it and it sucks that I can't remember at all. But rewatching this analysis is already making me sobbed, a bit less, BUT ONLY A BIT, this story makes me a sobbing mess and that OST! *eternal screaming* My tears will never stop.
This story was for real cute at beginning and sad at end. I got more emotions than in any movie i watched in my entire life, author is genuis to make short and working story
I started being a Touhou enjoyer in 2019, although my exposure to the series has been much earlier than that. Since then, I have been constantly watching/reading Touhou fanworks/printed works, and I stumbed upon Osana Reimu in early 2020. It was a real ride, and I really appreciate it. Its sequel, Reireimu, and another series by the same artist, Suikasen, were hits for me too. There are also other more fanworks that I enjoy, that gave me more perspective and/or background of characters. On the top of my head, I can think of some like: - Afterglow, which gives an interesting background of when Byakuren was sealed, and Nazrin's gradual bond with Shou (not to be confused with Muted Afterglow, a fanbook of Marisa's angst when Rinnosuke leaves Gensokyo for the outside world, that was good too). - Though the Wind Cries, an interesting story covering Kanako, Suwako and Sanae's past before coming to Gensokyo. - At Chirei: I picked it up because it's by Karaagetarou, and I don't regret it a bit. A perspective on why Rin and Utsuho can turn into human form, why Koishi close her third eye and Utsuho's power. - The Immortal who saw the Death of the Universe, a roundabout just to explain why Eirin is surprised when she meets Sakuya in IN (an obscure detail). - Omoito, a story of Hourai getting consciousness. Also comes with some unrelated-to-the-plot PC-98 comedy. - Flan wants to die: Yeah, no need to talk more about it. P.S. By recent productions, I have also been enjoying works by Azuma Aya and Ashiyama Bungaku as well. They are great. On the other hand, for an unforeseenable future of a video, maybe you can cover a ... more questionable side of Touhou fanworks (aside from the obvious like Cookie because it was talked down to the grave already) for the full experience for the viewers. Love from Vietnam.
I remember watching this long ago and the feels man definitely was moment i wished i didn't have trouble making tears cuz I'd rather cry than have a empty feeling.
I hope there'll be more touhou fanworks videos! What if a must-see beginner-friendly fanworks list... Like Super Speed Starters, Chirei De, -Marisa and Alice's Self Contradiction,- stuff that isn't too weird or violent, but are masterpiece
11:52 This has got to be my favorite part of the video, I can probably say Touhou and many other works of fiction have inspired me to create my own stories I want to create and tell….. Also at 12:09, I didn’t know the Bloom into You author did Touhou art. (Not sure if this is related but I also wanted to share how the author/artist of Quintessential Quintuplets also began his career drawing Touhou characters)
I had to re-watch Osana Reimu after this, because something did not sit right with me, and I think I know what it is. Something younger me could probably not understand, this series is about familial love. The stand ins are Yukari -> Stern Father, Mom -> Sacrificial Mother, Rumia -> Rebellious Elder Sister, Reimu -> Innocent Younger Sister. The story focuses on the moment rebel elder sister Rumia has become a peer to her Mother in terms of power. (Analog to when a teen becomes an independent adult, and their parents become peers and cease to be authority figures) I'll try to be brief, Mom: Mom had her rebellious phase and lives in shame of what she had done in the past. Sees her old self in her eldest daughter and is trying to fix her. Yukari: Dad is stern, only knows how to do things by saying them directly and is trying not to get involved emotionally. (At the end when Yukari is trying to kill Rumia but can't it can be interpreted as Dad blaming her for Mom's death but seeing Mom in Small Rumia and not going through with it), Reimu: Reimu is an innocent child that loves her family, she goes through a lot in the end when Mom dies and Elder sister (dies? goes away?). Dad is there to take care of her though. Rumia: Rumia had a lot on her plate, Mom has flaws but is still more competent than her so she gets dragged into taking care of her younger sister, the act of taking care of Reimu shows her the importance of family, but due to differences with Mom and Dad (And due to how the story has to end), she gets separated from her sister and kills Mom. This part is a bit messy because it deals with the canon of the series. In the end Mom learns not to hide her feelings and to trust elder sister (for the most part). Elder sister learns that she has to take care of her family and that Mom loves her and what she did was because she wanted what was better from her. Dad being uninvolved much has now to take care of Reimu, and the once innocent and carefree Reimu has to deal with the loss of two major people in her life, scarring her for life. Which is probably why she becomes the Reimu we now know today. Edit: Turns out I was missing one little bit at the end, that makes the Yukari is Dad thing even stronger.
A watermelon got me interested in this, and then shortly after I became a river of tears You’ll become an ocean of tears after you finish the sequel too iirc
Absolutely heart wrenching. Unfortunately, I think that the prequel to it just doesn't have the same level of greatness. I like the ending of both though.
It's charming how aspects of this have become more close to canon, specifically Enoko's backstory in 19 confirming Marisa was a crybaby when she first came to the forest.
Surprise there was no mention of the sequel it had gotten, but nonetheless really great video on what is one of the most popular touhou fanworks. Honestly it got me feeling quite nostalgic.
I always felt that the touhou series biggest strength was that it works in favor of "adaptation of a different point of view" It bases itself in many myths and stories, sorta expanding their original concepts in different directions, and the fanworks keep the cycle of "what if that was this slightly different instead?" alive I think for this reason even minor details / mistakes like having the "Little Reimu" series be more known as "Osana Reimu" are beautiful accidents, as they are in a way an adaptation of the title! That being said and going into a tangent about fanworks, watching this video and thinking about the perspective that it has of Rumia, it makes me realize that the fangame "Yoiyami Dancers" goes into the complete different side lore wise of what a good touhou game can do to work but still manages to keep the charm and interest of the series + expanding some aspects, would really love seeing your opinion on that one as I haven't seen coverage of it past the "The game is fun" commentary of a few channels!
In a way I think touhou's story is like a mix of a uncompleted canvas and a Rorschach test because even though touhou has its own story the setting is so flexible that an aspiring writer could make any genre of story take place in the touhou setting. For example I've been thinking about the immense potential touhou has for a serious shonen manga style action story in its setting but now I just realized it has immense potential for any story in it's setting probably because I'm a fan of shonen manga i project that onto touhou like a Rorschach test.
This fanwork was what got me into touhou, I really wish Zun would give Rumia another appearance in future games even if the story presented is nowhere near the same. Rumia quickly became my favourite character because of this fanwork and it tore me apart when I found out it wasn't canon. I would really appreciate if you make a video about its sequel
Its a little sad that Rumia almost got her shot to appear in official games again, on more than one occasion. She was considered for 12.3 Hisotensoku, but was ultimately passed over. And apparently there was work being done for her for 14.5 Urban Legend In Limbo, and 15.5 Antinomy of Common Flowers, too.
I can't be mad at Zun for using this approach on creating, as its quite literally what I do. Not out of my own volition either, I just get a obsessive tunnel vision when working on something, but at some point, usually near completion I lose all interest. Making it a absolute hell and slow process to progress, so I start on something else and once again enter my obsessive tunnel vision. This results in countless unfinished projects, and trying to brute force myself to finish it only leaves me depressed, prone to just scrapping the entire thing all-together due to being unsatisfied with the results.
Reimu crying as she sits on the steps of the shrine, waiting for her mom and Rumia to come back, always gets to me. It's so sad man, she doesn't know what's going on
I agree. I think it's the saddest moment.
That scene got me good

The intro convinced me to finally watch the whole thing. Now my vision is blurry. I blame you, give me my tears and innocence back
Lol
Lol
Skill issue tbh
3:41 Funnily enough, the crybaby little Marisa can be considered canon. Thanks, Enoko.
Yeah, it's cool that we got Marisa lore like that after all these years.
Marisa:"I was not a crybaby."
Everyone:"Liar!"
im out of touch, whats the lore
I'm witht the guy above me, I need lore update too, pls!

Its all time classic for sure. Its kinda sad that over the years we are getting less and less serious works like this that really focus on brining unique interpretations of characters.
I sometimes wonder that myself. But I also wonder if we are getting plenty of them, and it's just that they've always come out that slowly.

What results is a story regarding the relationship between the divine (shinigami) and mortals, the taboo/danger from using divine means to interfere with the order of things, and I don't really know how to word this, but the way of how "human" Komachi behaves, whereas others cut from the divine cloth sees themselves very different from the common of the mortals, Komachi is very close to them, worries and cares for their sake.
would recommend times and times again 4444/10 literally bought a physical version of it although I don't speak a lick of japanese
edit: oh nice its briefly shown near the end of the video
Yeah, the Shinigami work is definitely a really good example of that.
It's also one of my favourite !! I hope we get more stories like this
With how humanized yokai and spirits are in touhou, I wouldn't discard that Komachi actually feels extremely sad while bringing the dead to their final destination.
Awesome video. I liked the part with Rumia.
Understandable. I will include more Rumia in future videos.
@@GensouChronicle could you do an Imperfect Metamorphosis vid then
unironically that story holds a place near and dear to my heart because its what finally got me into Touhou.
this is is the story and the sequel that got me into a the whole of Touhou a earlier this year after being exposed to it second hand for decades, all because of a touhou meme short i saw on youtube. i love it 10/10 would cry again
I think I can relate if you're talking about a space song short about little Reimu
At the time I saw it I wasn't sure where to start from on touhou, but later in this year I finally know more about it (and cried)
You know Little Reimu is a good story when you cry over someone talking about the story with the series' OST 🥲
Fantastic video, I would love an in-depth look to ReiReimu, and maybe even the lesser known Kasen-Yoshika one!
Also seeing Flan wants to die made me smile :')
I will always hold that Deaf to All but the Song piano remix close to my heart.
Wait this has original soundtracks?
I definitely want to cover the Kasen one.
@@GensouChronicle Suikakasen is just straight up canon for me lol
@@GensouChronicle "want to cover the kasen one" OH GOD IT CONTINUES
@@PhantomGato-v- What do you MEAN ITS NOT CANON??????
As much as i like Osana Reimu, SuikaKasen is for sure my favorite Joyful work, that story made Kasen one of my favorite characters in Touhou and is what made me finally read Wild and Horned Hermit.
Yeah, SuikaKasen honestly feels like the better story.
SuikaKasen is my first exposure to Joyful, before Osana Reimu. What I love from SuikaKasen is that it takes the lore of each character from the original literature and worked it into a story that works nicely.
This is like accidentally pouring salt to a wound you tought was already closed.
I actually recently rewatched the entire YouReimu fanwork and cried again. Glad to see this having an Analysis from you Gensou.
It deserved a thoughtful look, so I'm glad to be the one who did it.
Lunatic(Legendary) as always,@@GensouChronicle
and then there is reireimu, which is twice as long and made me cry twice as much. I even cried over the first five minutes of it just because of the flower garland reference at the very beginning, and then the ending was just perfect.
A wholesome but tragic classic.
So much about Rumia, a minor character and enemy in all the games like many of the characters. Holds a special place in my heart as a story.
It takes a lot for me to sit through an hour long youtube video that’s all visual and little reimu definitely made it worth it for me
sTOP reminding me of THIS, im gonna die of dehydration due to all the fucking CRYING,
its been 5 years sinse i first watched it and youtube decided to remind me of it all and i rewatched it, i still fucking love and it its still one of my favourite fanworks but omg i thought i would stop crying about this after 5 whole years
thanks for this dive into it, i love osana reimu
I think it's the superior work, for sure.
ReiReimu made me cry. Suikakasen made me shed a tear but only for the first part (the abandoned child). The latter part completely unemotional.
One of my all time favorites, still remember how much I cried. A really beautiful piece of work.
you miss the part that Reimu is adopted..
im just pointing it out cos many fans miss it...
when Reimu was still an infant, her original home was caught on a crossfire between the Hakurei Miko and a powerful youkai. Reimu was found under the debris as seen on
episode 7B 4:56
Both this & its follow-up were truly magnificent, and the emotional turns & tragedy were a perfect contrast to the often whimsical nature of Gensokyo itself.
Though, much like in the case of the Project Moon verse & its fandom, I expected to find something special within the collective lunacy of this fandom.
Aw man, the story that made me cry for good
And please, do Reireimu, I rarely cry like a kid over stories
And I'll never forget how good this fandom is
I still get over emotional even when just watching a synopsis, but still it brings me joy hearing about it again. Your vids (like YouReimu) have inspired me my dude, until the next phantasm
Hell yeah
It's in there because the author actually made Touhou Fanworks. Check out "Flan wants to die"
@@GensouChronicle Nice to know this, thanks for the tip 🙏
I'm an adult this is fine i can watch this again.
7:45 :😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
*crying a lot*
I had read that once, but it is always wholesome! Thanks for the video!
Great reflection at the end. It is undoubtly the reason why Touhou it is what it is. Despite the years, Touhou remains and will remain a bastion of creativity and wonder, where anything can happen, where anyone is welcome. Good job on this simple yet passionate essay.
*holds Reimu fumo close*
Oh boy I am never ready for this
I absolutely love this story and it’s a sequal (ReiReimu) which was not as good, but still great as it goes into depth of what would happen if the charm broke
YEASSSSS WE NEED ONE FOR ITS SEQUEL THANK YOU FOR ANALYZING THIS ONE
There's a sequel to Little Reimu named Reireimu btw
Nice video. If I may suggest a similar video theme, you could talk about the absolute WAR CRIME that is Cirno and Reimu's One-Two-Three never having it's story finished.
so sad.
I found it pretty boring. And the author apparently abandoned his work on chapter 9 just for the lols

I have something like that in mind.
Why did they actually made me cry 😭
I watched it after this video.. holy..
I can’t look back at it now.. I don’t want to, and I won’t.. absolute masterpiece.
Dang you summarizing the story and the images of the story still made me cry
[spoiler ahead]
Because of this video, I decided to watch it before continuing to watch this video.
2:28 so thats where the watermelon eating meme came from.
Thank you for giving me a specific reason to go and watch/read this. It's very cute, and very bittersweet in the end...
A good video, too-
The art of ZUN painting is nice as well.
I'm happy more people are willing to check it out now.
it tells its story without any hesitation for what it will say to others or how it will be judged. its a simple and basic structured story that still makes me cry. it doesnt have the most polished artwork or a mold breaking story, yet how honest it shares its ideas leaves it resonating with me more than the tragic dramas trying to illicit the same feelings.
i ended up crying through the video, the story bringing me back to the days i watched it, and the pain i went through around that time, how the story hit me. it truly is a masterpiece built from the basics of story telling and drawing
@@GensouChronicle I surelly will, thanks a lot man!!
Little Reimu has Reimu's mom wear a Kamen Rider mask, therefore it's a 10/10. Would recommend to all the people living on Planet Earth right now
Man i saw the first 2 minutes of the video, closed it and started watching all of little reimu.
After 2 hours of video and 20 minutes of crying i am here to thank you.
Still crying
Glad you liked it.
Ripperoni, Meiling, can't escape the bullying.)
1:16
Suika:"I miss my wife..."(Kasen, lol. I love the mythology memes in the fanbase)
Satori:"I miss my sister..."
Junko:"I miss hateful voilence..."
6:07 Because this definitly would have never happened before, surely.
I see you using the EoSD Retexture Patch at the start, very nice
One of the few fanworks that legit made me cry
Oh man, obscure character in Touhou end up becoming my favorite but keep shifting so often depending on the year. When this was still new, waiting for the uploads to update, the finale broke MY HEART! The only fannmade one I like to this degree was a fusion RUclips Video between Dangan Ronpa with Touhou, but idr who made it and it sucks that I can't remember at all.
But rewatching this analysis is already making me sobbed, a bit less, BUT ONLY A BIT, this story makes me a sobbing mess and that OST! *eternal screaming* My tears will never stop.
Oh man now i regret not reading this before watching the video, all this over Rumia **sniff**
This story was for real cute at beginning and sad at end. I got more emotions than in any movie i watched in my entire life, author is genuis to make short and working story
Idk why I decided to reopen my wounds by watching this video, now all I want to do is sleep for 60 years again
First time I watch YouReimu, I cried buckets and even this recap made me tear up
i have to finish the followup series. osana reimu struck my heart directly with how poignant it was.
glad to see you cover it
No matter how many times I watch 幼靈夢, I simply can't hold but to cry, literally the best fan comic I have ever seen.
On the top of my head, I can think of some like:
- Afterglow, which gives an interesting background of when Byakuren was sealed, and Nazrin's gradual bond with Shou (not to be confused with Muted Afterglow, a fanbook of Marisa's angst when Rinnosuke leaves Gensokyo for the outside world, that was good too).
Flan wants to die makes me want to cry. 😭
I remember watching this long ago and the feels man definitely was moment i wished i didn't have trouble making tears cuz I'd rather cry than have a empty feeling.
my heart is sinking.
I still remember when i watch Osana Reimu for the first time, i cried for hours.
(Analog to when a teen becomes an independent adult, and their parents become peers and cease to be authority figures)
I'll try to be brief,
Mom: Mom had her rebellious phase and lives in shame of what she had done in the past. Sees her old self in her eldest daughter and is trying to fix her.
Yukari: Dad is stern, only knows how to do things by saying them directly and is trying not to get involved emotionally. (At the end when Yukari is trying to kill Rumia but can't it can be interpreted as Dad blaming her for Mom's death but seeing Mom in Small Rumia and not going through with it),
Reimu: Reimu is an innocent child that loves her family, she goes through a lot in the end when Mom dies and Elder sister (dies? goes away?).
A watermelon got me interested in this, and then shortly after I became a river of tears
You’ll become an ocean of tears after you finish the sequel too iirc
Absolutely heart wrenching. Unfortunately, I think that the prequel to it just doesn't have the same level of greatness. I like the ending of both though.
You mean the sequel? Either way, I agree. The ending was strange, too.
It was mentioned.
@GensouChronicle missed it, my bad
I went into this series knowing it had a sad ending, and thought
“But it’s not like it’ll make me cry”
*Oh boy was I wrong*
I always felt that the touhou series biggest strength was that it works in favor of "adaptation of a different point of view"
It bases itself in many myths and stories, sorta expanding their original concepts in different directions, and the fanworks keep the cycle of "what if that was this slightly different instead?" alive
I think for this reason even minor details / mistakes like having the "Little Reimu" series be more known as "Osana Reimu" are beautiful accidents, as they are in a way an adaptation of the title!
Btw, Joyfull still works on some of Shrina-Bansho's works as a lead artist! They're still working on things too! They also made Suikakasen.
Yup. Their art has improved a lot.
excellent video for a fantastic series
oh no.... to the memories...the tears...is all back..
I love so much Little Reimu and the continuation ReiReimu
tears just flow, when the memory resurfaces.
That's a good way to put it, and explains a lot of why so many people have different ways of viewing the world.
Can't wait for you to make a Reireimu video! (Reireimu is the sequel to Osama Reimu)
Sadly will likely never happen, given the later Q&A answers regarding ReiReimu
Also I loved that ending part!!!! It's so true!!
