it was hard watching you struggle with firing that thing up with the plug lead off

Saw that also..
The suspense is killing me, can't watch, does he find it?
Similar things as that are quite common here actually. He’s like the opposite of the James Condon channel.
@@GNX157nobody is perfect except you.
Glad your gamble paid off! A lot of people don't realize "Free boat deal but the trailer is worth $100s" involves separating and scraping the engine, draining and recycling all fluids and paying to dispose of the boat and can easily cost way more than what the trailer is worth.
As a former OMC tech, this was somewhat painful to watch. But, you got the engine running again. A few of my former customers had this Glastron model (and the V173 - the 17' version) and these boats were notorious for transom rot. I would not launch this boat without first assessing the transom. Get a wet gage and hold it up to the transom. Determine if the transom is wet/rotted. I suspect it is and the former owner gave up on it because if this issue. Better yet, you can simply push down on the engine to see if there is any transom movement. If there is, don't launch. The engine will certainly destroy what's left of the boat.
Could you tell us a bit about what a "wet gage" is? Thanks! Todd
Transom is not looking straight it's ant food.
when i saw the crack in the transom i knew it was rotten because when they woods looses it rigidity the first thing that happens is transom cracks because the engine will push through everything.
Moister meter. @@toddwarriner8249
He's actually gonna try to fix that starter.. ?? You believe that.. ????
Basically that boat and engine combo is a perfect all around boat almost like a Civic Si. Quick, reliable, pleasing to the eye. and very good handling. What's also nice is it can be a sporty lil day cruiser, decent ski boat. and a nice fishing boat too. They made a lot of those and a tri-hull version too
Boat looks great after the pressure wash and the outboard sounds great also! Only suggestion would be to repair what appeared to be a crack on the transom. I wasn't really sure if it was or not but it looked pretty decent if it is
Looks like a healthy crack, bummer.
Yeah, that transom is toast. No doubt she's all rotten.
@@charlesabit’s a rotted piece of crap I woulda left in the field and got a cool boat
@@durawins Hey! Go get yourself a "cool" boat. Gonna have to quit watching youtube first though.
@@robertmceuen3630 I have a 83 hydrostream vulture with a black max 200 does 82mph and a 2011 liberator built by Randy Corson. What do you have you dork?
Always liked the look of those little Glastrons. You got an awesome deal on this one. Only real issue you have left is the transom as others have noted. More than likely you've got rot happening in there. Replacing the plywood thats in there isn't difficult, its just a little labor intensive (I did a lot of fiberglass work on boats in another life).
When it ran I was surprised. I really thought the impeller was toast but it at least circulated the water. But dude after the pressure wash I actually said “dude what the heck” out load. That boat made a turn around. I guess that’s an example of everything working out right!
As a kid growing up in the 80’s , these Glastrons was everywhere on our local lake. I have always wanted one. Those Johnson 85’s are good engines. That transom is cracked pretty good, it will need some attention given that beast of an engine. Nice find.
You gotta love those old Johnson motors. Every time I see one, I think of my dad. He worked at the plant in Waukegan for 33 years.
You should go around the boat 2/3 times spraying it down with water to allow the mould and dirt to soften up. Then start cleaning the dirt/mould off. Much easier when it's all pre softened.
Dude, your an animal! You scored on an old school boat and with very little work to get her going. You got your fishing boat and now you have a fun boat. 😊
This is one of your Best Buy’s yet. That looks really good for what you have into it for sure.
from what i recall, these johnson/evinrude V4's have the same bore and stroke from 85 hp to 140 hp.. the difference is in carburation and the back plate.. the 140 has a big "hump" on the plate look into finding some larger carbs from say a 115 and get some more power out of her! and those glastrons are great little ski boats! they handle well don't throw a big wake and are easy to drive!
The 85 Johnson in 1978 had a smaller block 92.6 versus the 115 and 140 which had the 99.6 blocks (and the 140 having a tuned exhaust called a bubble back). That 85 is a great motor but you won't see any significant change with carb changes
Just want to say I use Starbrite mold and Mildew remover on my boat seats. Just spray it on and wait a few minutes then wipe it off. Works miracles
Nice boat, love Johnson outboards. Getting fancy, drone footage, background music. Keep up the hard work.
the Evinrude and Johnson motors are good motors and most of the parts are interchangeable, very simple and easy to work on.
Once again a brilliant boat video looking forward to part 2 you have been very lucky so far! Alan Northern Ireland 👍
You’ve quickly become one of my favorite RUclipsrs. Always looking forward to the next video to get my wrenching fix haha! Thanks for putting out great videos and lots of them!
Looks great. Before the carpet you might want to fiberglass the floor and check in those transom cracks. If it started to rot you’re going to have to rip it out.
Looks absolutely amazing man. For a free boat I’d say it’s looks mint. Great work
Nice boat!! Free is always good.. I can't wait to see the next video of the boat progress... a buddy of mine is picking up a 40hp Johnson.. it's good to see some outboard toys rather then just ATVs and motorcycles.. good video man.. keep em coming
WOW, great deal, the trailer alone was well worth it. Those little Glastrons were a pretty neat and popular boat to have back in the day. It is coming along very well, will make a nice little cruiser. Nice work.
Human neglect and lack of interest and caring is the biggest problem with all these boats laying around all over the place .Oh yeah I agree occasionally you will get the rotten transom syndrome,LOLL and its real junk unless you fix it and most dont. Nice deal all around here for you Glastrons were great in their heyday sharp looking lines I remember them well as a kid...Glenn
Nice Boat! Total Score! Looking forward to you making her shine!
Compared to the $500 boat this looks great. Now to see those fiberglass encased, rotted stringers and transom :)
Hey Joe...nice job on getting that starter to work again!!!.......Love your videos!!
This is what is so nice about the old 2-strokes. As long as they are not run without oil, they will start and run almost forever with some TLC.
Any moter 4 stirkes 2
Great stuff, love boat fixes. Good luck.
That's a great motor, for its age, had one on my old Larson. Trashed the old boat, put the motor on a pallet in the back, complete with controls.
Glass-tron (like the movie Tron). Shame, they're awesome boats. You can see a dozen of them at Freemont any given weekend. This flower box needs a ton of love. Maybe those are 4 leaf clover in there?
Great stuff. Enjoying the cheap boat videos but they are a lot of work for you compared to a bike. . Appreciate you doing them for us
Thanks for watching!
Glastrons were "the" boat to have when I was a kid. Fast, reliable and sporty.
heavy boats but always liked them. i think he will find the transom is now mashed potato inside :)
And heavy.
I had this same boat back in the day. It was with orange instead of blue. Had 100 HP Mercury inline 6 Outboard. You will love this boat if you can get it in the water and nothing to serious is wrong with the hull or transom.
100 hp eltric
Glad to see your still at it
Love the videos ! Once I watched one literally sat there for a couple days and watched mostly everything, beautiful home and great skill would love to have a drink and chat or even go ripping ! Cheers from canada !
Thanks for watching!
@@2vintage more than welcome!
Lucky is absolutely right, my friend!!.. What a beautiful find!! CHEERS!!
It so peaceful at your land out there…. Made one day in ur future you should build a house on that property!
I had a 1982 glastron carlson back in my younger days it was really similar to yours except it had a small windshield and would only sit 5 people, it had a 115 hp motor and it would top out at about 54 mph.
Bro nice looking boat. It's gonna need a transom. And most likely stringers. That is the cause of that crack in the glass below your steering linkage.
That big crack in the transom ain't good. I have a 83 115 Johnson. Love it
Scotch brute and a wire brush clean it up nice. That’s what I used to get my starter on wave runner to work..
that cleaned up so well
good job man !
You should get some KORKAY. It's used for cleaning RV awnings but you can use it on anyting. Spray it on and it literally melts all that mold and mildew. Rinse with your power washer.
You can bet that the plywood in the transom and deck is rotted sitting in a field for years. Older Glastron boats are collectible in southern markets restored. Cap off restoration isn’t to bad of a job but marine fir plywood for stringers and deck; as well as about 15 gallon of laminating resin, chop strand and biaxial fiberglass materials gets expensive.
Wow! 100 dollar gold fine of a boat!👌💯
Transom fix as said below and you have an ace boat. Cannot believe how well the gel coat cleaned up.😀
Trailer looks like it’s in really good shape too . I would repack the bearings . Put wheel buddies with fittings on them so you can hit them with grease whenever you want .
I noticed a crack in the transom and at the base of the transom on the inside. It looks like the wood beam inside the transom may be broken. That needs to be checked before taking it out.
Good job, while I was watching I shouted at the screen, the lower spark plug cap is off! I think Joe noticed it later down the line going "Doh!"
Patience Persistence Professionalism
Nice work and thank you for bringing us along.
I'm so glad that you were chosen to be the new owner of that boat. It needed you.
Did You get your title ? Be careful that thing looks Fast !
Best to you and yours.
Lol I thought you were nuts for messing with that starter good job
That was a pretty good score for free,I paid $1500 for a nice 80s model evinrude 90 years back
On that first startup, I assume he knew that it was running on 3 cylinders. It helps if you attach all the plug wires.
New impeller, change out the lower unit oil. The starter sounds good. If it’s not heating up, it could just use a deeper cleaning.
You need to get the carburetor cover
And when you’re getting new plugs, go with Champion. Those older Evinrude/Johnson motors and NGK do not get along at the high RPMs.
And there was a service bulletin from Johnson years ago to move that telltale hose up over the top right cylinder, and then down to the output. It helps prevent air pockets in the cooling chambers.
I’ve got a 1983 Johnson 90 hp that was running on a 15 foot bass boat so that’s about the right size for that boat/motor combo. It’s probably rated for a 125.
90 hp jet iutbard
Sometimes ya got to know when to fold them...when to hold them...when to walk away!
Looks awesome, my parents had a Glastron like that for years, good boats.
I bought a boat in worse condition years back for $100. Fixed it up and named it “Seanote”, C-note for $100 and sea for the water. Thought it fit well.
I just saw it fire for the first time!! I couldn't believe it!!! YAHOO!! OK.... back to the video!!! 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 One "fire" for each cylinder !!! Ha!!!
I had this engine on my Glastron. That engine sucks gas big time! Ran great but loved gas. Love your channel!
All cross flow two strokes are plenty thirsty…
New giastring use elrric outvsrd
This motor has tilt and trim. I am guessing its one that had the external trim pump unit that sat in the back of the boat next to the batteries. There are probably a couple fittings that two hoses hook into around that motor mount somewhere
I have redone a few of these. They were noted for coming with the Mercury 115hp "Tower of Power," Silly fast... This one has the dreaded, but normal transom fatigue. Luckily, after softening the rubber cap from the rubrail with a heat gun, MANY MANY screws later the top comes off with just a little help at the transom. You ALSO have broken stringers. This ALL was pine and plywood... CHEAP, easy repairs after the top is lifted off and a gallon or two of epoxy. Be sure to have the top back on before re-epoxying the floor back in place. Enjoy!
Wish this comment was closer to the top. Good advice from someone that has actually done it.
The damage on the transom is probably a lot worse than you think. And even if the engine is appropriately sized, I doubt that the transom is strong enough to handle with the damage and the age. I'd recommend taking the boat to a professional and having it looked at.

He is in your state and recently moved to a rural property. Maybe you can exchange services.
what a cool looking boat !
cant wait ti see it in the water.
love boat vids!
congrats man great score!
There is also a crack you need to fix on the left side where the motor sit's
Love these videos.Keep on posting.Greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪
Summer's almost over, get to it, Joe!
That is awesome brother!!! I am so amazed at what you are able to fix!!!!
My last old fiberglass boat I restored, ChrisCraft Scorpion, ended up a nightmare with hull and transom water damage. Had to put in all new wood/glass. Hope yours is all good! 🤞
That's the problem with older fiberglass boats. The stringers and transom are wood. Those tend to rot over the years if left uncared for. Then your only option is separating the shells to fix it all.
Was thinking the same. Gotta keep these old boats covered folks.
You're definitely going to need to put a new transom on that
I have stuff to do but, yes,Im watching 2vintage repair another vehicle!😂.
It’s really bad to squirt thin penetrating oil in a motor. The thin oil will prevent the proper heavy viscosity oil from working. It’s a great way to destroy all bearings 👍. Thin oil offers no protection from friction and repels thick oil.
We had a '70 Glastron Bayfield 16 with a 115 Evinrude. Great boat. It went on plane so smoothly that the bow hardly raised up at all. Have fun with this one.
You got a good boat and the OMC 85s were one of the best outboards made.
Dang that thing cleaned up!
My first boat was a 14 1/2 foot Glasstron (it’s “tron” like the movie.) My friends and I put serious hours on the water skiing and cruising very long distances on the lower Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. I learned how to do glass and electrical wiring work with that old girl. That rock solid little tub was my first love at fourteen years old and saw me through high school.
Keep going on this neat little boat!
Great video as always
I'm a little disappointed that you're not using WD-40 as much. 😉
I'm assuming the reason you're working on the boat on your land is...your wife must have said, "If you bring one more thing to this house...you're going to be in trouble"
Too expensive!
The trailer is worth allot!
Too light and small to be worth a lot
The transom looks shot. Lift the motor up and down at the lower unit with the engine tilted up. You will see a bunch of flex.
It'll run. May have to clean the carbs but that's easy as he'll. Used to have to clean mine yearly but always ran all summer, has power to pull skiers and wake boarders.
Thats going to be a fun play boat. They make a handle to pull the motor up. Way easier. We want to see jade on a tube. That would be fun. Thanks for sharing.
That,s going to be a nice boat. That OMC Duratank could be an issue. My Johnson cuts out on high throttle, like a fuel starvation issue. I think its due to OMC's attempt to make those tanks EPA compliant with the venting. I tried everything with that tank but the motor runs perfect with a cheap old Atwood tank and a standard aftermarket fuel line with standard connectors.
Those tanks crack and leak
Love your boat content!
noticed at 39 minutes in ur bottom left spark plug wire was not on
before you change water pump try unclogging or cleaning the little tube the water squirts out of, sometimes they get clogged up.
Hence the old sayin...one man's junk is another man's treasure!!!lol! Great job!
Nice job giving it a new life
just a fyi when working on boats testing for spark turn key on and jump the silo node makes it soo much easier for testing spark etc you can also unplug the harness on this style and it will bypass all the fail safes and ignition
I had a 77 Glastron open bow, looked the same as the one here. I had a 4 cylinder 2 stroke Mercury 50 on it and it was enough to ski behind. The boat I had before it had a 5.0 HO 302 it was allot thirstier than the Glastron with a six gallon tank!
I needed this video!
To open a boat glove box you must push the lock in like a button wile pulling the door😊👍👍 your welcome😊 ( take the key out for ease of use.
Wow is this a coincidence? I got a free Glastron Aqua Lift from 1966 like 3 days ago! Cleaned the carb and it runs great! Mine was at least stored in a shed though. Yours looks nice! Mine is a 14 foot and has a 40hp Evinrude.
I think when people say it's been sitting for two years, is like when people get pulled over they only had a couple drinks, LOL.
All you're other videos are awesome!!!
Glass-tron is how you pronounce, and great score!
So Jade wouldn’t let you bring another project home! Great Vid.
This boat looks great, I hope it moves smoothly.
Me too!
you going to be digging out your own pond to test these water craft,
Yeah I need to
