Excellent video. It called my attention because I had problems using a Mann filter in my Mercedes-Benz. I was using either the MB OEM filter or the Knecht and things were just working fine. Then I used the Mann filter and after 2 weeks of the oil change, I noticed a rattle noise coming from the timing chain during the cold start that lasts a few seconds, and then it stopped. Checking the Mann filter construction (I had a spare one), it looked very bad because of the closing at both ends and the glue used, which made me think that it wasn't performing as it should and was not keeping the appropriate oil pressure during cold start, which would explain the rattle coming from the timing chain due to insufficient oil pressure. I changed the oil filter using the Knecht and the problem was gone immediately. No more rattle noise during cold starts.
@@craftedwithart Thanks for answering. The Mann filter that caused the issues is the model HU514X that was supposed to be compatible with the Knecht filter mode OX 183, but it is not. Like I mentioned before, once the Mann filter was replaced by the Knecht, the rattle noise during the cold start was over. As a mechanical engineer, it makes me wonder how such a bad quality filter can be even considered as a compatible part of Mercedes-Benz engines.
@@rogerriehl1612 I've noticed some rattle noise as well at cold start occasionally. And I have the MANN filter but ordered KNECHT couple days ago. The car is 560SEL
@@craftedwithart It's interesting to know that Mann filters fail in other MB engines. Apparently, they are unable to hold the oil pressure while the starter is running, thus the rattle. This can cause serious damage to the transmission chain. I just learned that the companies that manufacture oil filters to MB are Febi Bilstein and Hengst, this last is also responsible for AMG filters. So I ordered filters from both of them to compare and they have the same dimensions and appearance.

Both are great filters and also OEM for VW/Audi, usually one of the two, on newer Audis you can find that it came from the factory with Purflux filter, but then again, it depends on the engine type.. Actually no filter is 100% efficient so whatever you pick, you made a good pick, compared to some no-name junk or fishy brands, this is top of the line. I've seen cheap filters that had more glue inside than they had filter material xD.

You put a lot of work into a well engineered test! Although the following procedure could provide additional insight into the filtration properties/capabilities of the products under test, additional time/expense would be required. Specifically: 1) weigh each oil filter (new), 2) run the oil filters through the oil pump without contaminants, then record the weight of the following after a set period of time: the filters and the amount of oil drained from each, 3) repeat step 2 with a measured amount of contaminants. Thank you for your helpful contributions.
Very thorough test. The secret is to use two oil filters for one oil change. I change my oil filter half way through my oil change period. Filters are cheap. Engine is expensive.
Great test. I run Mann filters for my whole life and have never had any issues with them. A lot of high mileage cars. But i am also very surprised by the quality of the Mahle filter. Interesting to see
Best filtering test on RUclips! The results are very interesting. Mann has thinner paper and larger surface area. So I was excepting to MANN's flow rate would be much more than knecht.

Thanks, nice test. However I don’t give much value for the filtration efficiency when it comes to looking at the caught dirt in the paper. You would need to do oil analysis to really know how efficiently they filter the dirt. There was a test of car oil filters in local magazine 2011 where they properly analyzed the results using proper equipment. Mann filter won that having one of the best filtration efficiency as well as second best dirt capacity. Knecht had worst filtration efficiency. When it comes to numbers it was 40% efficiency in filtrating 20 micron particles. Best filter had 50% and Knecht only bit over 20%. At 30 microns Mann filtered 90% and Knecht only 50%. However Knecht had best capacity for dirt but Mann was second. I don’t know how valid that 10 years old test is anymore, maybe they have changed paper or maybe not, but I personally do only buy Mann filters and change oil and filter every 10 000km. Filter manufacturers has to balance between filtration efficiency and capacity. If you were to have 10 micron 90% efficiency paper it would be clogged quite fast and the worst case scenario is clogged filter and opened bypass valve = no filtration at all.
The flow through the filter would be interesting. Like how much actually was pumped through the circuit. Because the Mann had less on the sample, but significantly higher active area.
In regards to being messy, it really depends on the orientation of the filter. I find pulling the cartridge filter from a Mercedes up and out much less messier than many spin-on filters, even when the opening on them is mounted towards the top.
Bravo!Bravo!! Positive displacement pumps deliver the same flow no matter the restriction downstream. The power demand rises as does the pressure which is why a pd pump always has a pressure relief valve. Some more modern engines have variable displacement pd pumps.

The pumping force in the vehicle is high and the gravitational flow test at 100 degrees Celsius does not mean anything it just gives basic parameters of the filter media which is irrelevant to the application in most cases. 4. Your comparison of visual structure of media between Mann filter and Knecht filter is also wrong. 5. Even though the test is done the same way, there is no way to assume or predict the distribution of your contamination sample in the same way as per fluid dynamics, so either gravitational test for retention or particle counter for efficiency at a specific @micron rating distribution sensitivity at the downstream end is the only way to compare. 6. We cannot know from you Video if the filter was installed in it's housings the right way or the same way in both cases (torque, o-rings, etc.) 7. Doing the test in proper ISO standard laboratory will change results dramatically. 8. Filtration area calculation is wrong. 9. the table of comparison is choosing the wrong parameters to force declaration of the Knecht filter as the better filter, which may not be the case if tested in the way i mentioned above. 10. From the test you did there is no scientific way to determine which filter is better and what is presented here is just your interpretation. 11. Really lot of work you made in this video. Very good analysis. But it look now like Mann is not good, but in reality those are good products. Hi one more comment from my side. You have been testing the material how fast oil can flow though it. This is telling us only the info about the material properties. Not saying that this is wrong, but I think missing test is how oil would flow over the whole filter construction, because at the end this is happening under the hood. Please consider this ;)
@Sergiu Gabor : Wouldn't the greater Value of "Folds" capture just as much as the other? The MANN was 156 folds and the Knecht was 120; so, wouldn't the Knecht appear to capture more - whereas the MANN has 36 additional folds to capture contaminants?

So which is better? Also what about wix filters?
Interesant. De apreciat efortul👍
Consider making future videos in English because your test are really professional, i would like to keep watching your videos and hear English commentary instead of reading translated text on video :) Subscribed and thumb up for this video.
He spoke in English...
amazing that you maked the video in english. subbed!!!
Better mann or knecht???????? Help please
Ai depus ceva munca pentru acest test. Bravo!
Thank you, I'm sticking with Mahle/Knecht from now on. It appears that Mann has moved production to Mexico for the NA market and I have noticed a corresponding decrease in quality while pricing remains the same (or higher than Mahle in some cases).
Great test!!! God bless you and your family!
Really lot of work you made in this video. Very good analysis.
But it look now like Mann is not good, but in reality those are good products. I wonder how other brands would perform, or even compare it also to the OEM from dealer :)
One thing which is unknown is how much contamination has been passing though the filters. But this would be hard to measure.
Will you make air filter comparison as well?
Thanks! I'm planning to also test fuel filters and air filters.
@@SergiuGabor cool. How about air on filters? Some of them are with carbon some of them without. And the are new filters from knecht lao series eg lao248 .
Hi one more comment from my side. You have been testing the material how fast oil can flow though it. This is telling us only the info about the material properties. Not saying that this is wrong, but I think missing test is how oil would flow over the whole filter construction, because at the end this is happening under the hood. Please consider this ;)
Thanks for English.. now I understand what is being said about what.
Felicitari - o sa iti dam share :) - Epic world-class work!
Interesting test. Would be interesting to see the results from Hengst synthetic.
Good test but you forgot something. The dirty side is ususaly outside of the filter.
To make a test count, you have to change the pressure side.
Succes in continuare .
@Sergiu Gabor : Wouldn't the greater Value of "Folds" capture just as much as the other? The MANN was 156 folds and the Knecht was 120; so, wouldn't the Knecht appear to capture more - whereas the MANN has 36 additional folds to capture contaminants?
i have a Sprinter and i've went thru many filter brands, but always avoided Mann. I have used mostly Hengst, Filtron, Wix
Why?
Salut, foarte interesant astept cat mai multe teste similare, Mult succes!
Plus inca un test in plus.
Informații de calitate. M-am abonat.
can you test more filters?
Good test. Your english is good enough. Have confidence!
Thanks for the encouragement!
