- When you go out to eat at a fancy restaurant are you afraid of looking like a fool? Do you know which fork to use when or where your napkin goes when you head to the bathroom?

#1 offense is putting the damn cell phone on the table. #2 is leaving the ringer and notification sound on.
Maybe it's different in American fine dining, but I learned continental from the get-go. My parents figured it would prepare me for the most difficult of the two. I was taught a napkin on the left side of the place setting means you're finished and you would like the dishes cleared away. If I get up to go to the men's room, the napkin on the chair seat says "I'm away but not finished" and returning soon. If I leave it to the left of the plate, the waiter will most likely assume you've left altogether and clear the place. As well, the "resting" ^ position of flatware between bites is fork tines down, sharp edge of knife facing inward. Upward pointing tines are a bad eye poke waiting to happen, if you should accidentally push down on the handle of it. To be honest, dining etiquette is not something you can cover in a 5-7 minute segment. There's logic to each rule, and plenty of hands-on practice is required. It should be taught at home, when the student is young and impressionable. I think also, if you're doing continental stay with that. If you're committing to American style, stick with that for the duration of the meal. You want the mechanics of eating to be secondary. Your conversation is primary, after all.

Great tips on how to eat at a nice restaurant. I've met too many adults that avoid going to 'fancy' restaurants because they feel uncomfortable.

It's not an extra spoon, one small spoon is for the dessert (goes on top of the plate along with the dessert fork), and the other one is the coffee spoon (goes to the far right end).
Also, for the napkin: if you're going to a restroom and are coming back, the napkin goes on the seat of your chair, but when you're finished with the meal and leaving, put the napkin to the left from your plate.
I have no idea why this lady doesn't know these things, she should if she's going to talk about them!

Bread is always torn with the hands and never cut with a knife. Butter is spread on individual torn pieces from a butter palate on ones own bread plate. Chargers are used at dinner when placemats are not used they stay in the table until the dessert course. Chargers are never to be used with placemats nor should a place,at ever be used with a table cloth. A fine dinning table should be polished to high gloss before dinner and should be seen at dinner. Luncheon is served with table cloth or placemat, breakfast with placemats only. That extra spoon was a coffee spoon the one above the charging plate is a dessert spoon. The coffee spoon is added to the dinner table at the service of the water bowl which sits in a dessert plate not a bread plate! Who is this woman?

The bread plates are the ideal size for holding our mobile phones, however I don't think the chargers should be brought along during dinner, as we'll end up eating and staring at our mobile phones at the same time. The placemats are not necessary as well, except when we use the highly flammable Samsung Note 7 - then the table cloth need to be removed beforehand, and a water bowl may come in handy for dousing the flame.

It doesnt look right when switching the knife and fork. they should always stay in the same position. And the napkin should be put on the seat incase you want to get up to pick a phone call or use the washroom. Well thats according to the European way, which is considered most appropriate.

Not sure about the napkin being placed back on the table after it’s been used. Most etiquette videos I’ve watched say that the napkin after it’s been open goes back on the chair
I have also heard that the napkin once it's been opened should never go back on the table how do we know which ones correct
@@telawilcox6640 I can tell you easily. You are correct. Once used, the napkin is never placed on the table again until the meal is completely finished. If you have to excuse yourself from the table, the napkin is to be placed on your seat, never on the back of your chair (I've seen that).
Once you have finished your meal, only then is the napkin placed loosely to the left of your plate (never neatly folded). This is a code to the wait staff that you are finished. These are all what's referred to as "silent codes".
This is as per standard continental etiquette dining.

Go to Islamic countries how happy everyone in restaurants are and every family gets privacy at their table by asking for privacy screens. Come out of the middle age mentality. Be decent and have good morals. Eat like human beings and that's it don't think to much. Focus on health and food not mechNics
my pet peeves are eating with your mouth open is rude and belching and passing gas gets on my nerves and for goodness sakes stop using the table cloth as a napkin i have seen some ill mannered people talking with mouth full and just so loud in public i now choose to dine at home in peace hope one day to see more people take a course in manners talking on cell phones when your on a dinner or luncheon or even breakfast or brunch .man i could go on for ever so i won't today I'm just venting.
