This was one of the most enjoyable things I've made. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm over the moon with how it turned out! I can't wait to make another.

That little ”mistake” with the handle made it look even better!
Very well done!
Thanks! I like it too, another happy accident! :)
Pask Makes Bob Ross approved!
i totally agree - looks awesome. You're a remarkable craftsman, thanks for sharing!
I agree! Pretty floored at the quality of the knife for his first time.
I also like the file jig setup he used to make an accurate beveled edge.
Hi Neil - the 'unintended modification' or beautification looks fantastic - it popped when you oiled the handle, and your sharpening looks pretty good too - well made.

“Not sure if that’s acceptable”! It’s your workshop and your knife mate, you make it the way you see fit! I think it looks aces.
Thanks very much Alex! I was just wondering if it was the done thing just gluing a piece in or whether everything on the scales should have a pin through it. I'm sure it will be fine though! :)
Pask Makes I think the physics of this will be pretty similar, although knife-making-wise I say that from my armchair. And if worst comes to worst and a piece should fall off, you definitely have the skills to epoxy it back on! :-) BTW I recently was wondering about that quick epoxy, are all the brands the same in their adhesion? I stuck a ukulele bridge back onto the body that had come off and the epoxy joint failed a few days later under string tension. I wonder was it because it was a cheapo 5min epoxy (no name brand)?
In any case your knife is going to be fine I’m sure- there’s no flex to be expected (unlike the string tension on thin plywood of a uke body) so I’m sure it’ll be fine for years to come.
@@PaskMakes you pin the 2 sides through the tang to stabilize the whole mess...if you get fancy, you hammer the pins like a true rivet..but then you need material to remove to get the finish back....in this age of really good adhesives the pins are fine without hammering to deform.
How the scale is built up really shouldn't make a difference with respect to the pins. ."shouldn't "...
I did paint work for a living for a time. Mostly motorcycles. I learned the mark of a good painter is not how rarely he/she makes mistakes, but how well those mistakes are fixed. I found your channel yesterday and have been watching it a lot. I see when you mess up, you are quite good at not only fixing it, you often make the project look better than it would have had you not messed up. So I say KEEP making those mistakes and KEEP making things better!
I've seen a ton of knife builds on RUclips, and for some reason this one is my favorite. The wood choice, the contours, the blade, everything is perfect. I'm looking forward to the next one!
Simple and tasteful knife. Love the patches of darker wood! Thank you for taking the time, all the best.
Thanks mate! :)
BEEN WATCHING YOU MAKE THINGS ALL DAY. YOUR THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH PERSON ON HERE. KEEP THEM COMING FRIEND. 👍👍👍
You will have that knife for years to come because it’s you first. Well done.
Thank you! :)
There is no one knife for everyone. That's the wonderful thing about this project. You made a knife for you.
Beautiful work! You should be very proud of that.
Just a hint - before doing the final glue up of the handle scales, completely finish contouring the end of the scales by the blade (where the fortuitous oversight was made). That way you don't risk damaging the blade by shaping the scales after they're permanently glued.
Thank you again. I eat sleep and dream of my next project and now my list is growing. I don't know if I should be watching your videos. I may have to stop until I get caught up with my own list. Have a wonderful day really enjoy.
love that the handle isn't bulky. looks very nice.
love the she oak handle really sets the knife off
Somehow I'm very satisfied watching your videos. It is hard to believe this is your first attempt at making a knife. Using the right tool for the right task in a right way make your video even better.
Thank you. Keep on what you are doing, cant wait to see your next project. Best wishes from Vietnam.
Thanks very much! 😊
The roller bearing file end stop was a great idea.
Mate it turned out fantastic. Like every one is saying the variation in the handle looks great - masterstroke!
Great! From a dirty chunk of metal to a gleaming ergonomic tool of beauty, you have made an heirloom piece. I especially like the way you address and accept your little oversights and you let us see how you solve your challenges. The dark wood bits look intentional! Love your videos. When I come back in my next life, I want to be just like you!
I was going to say the same thing that little mistake with a handle really made the difference in with that different colored wood that's a very very nice job congratulations
A thing of beauty, I think Bob Ross' mantra of not having mistakes, but having happy accidents really applies here, I think the contrasting wood really adds a lot to the character of this knife. Great job. Love the videos.
Ive been smithing since i was 11 and im 14 now and i made my first knife almost a year ago it was a crappy rebar straight razor. You should be very very proud of this project
Thanks very much Elijah! :)
I loved this video. No nonsense, straightforward, humble, and presented in a way that made the project doable and attractive to me. Great job. Thank you.
Brendan.
Beautiful work Neil, the fancy vise/holder to hold and project the blade while shaping the handle took it to the next level.
your video is just the right length, well narrated and best of all, shows how you adapt to challenges and mistakes.
Neils workmanship is superb and this video was the first one I chose to watch today.
mate for a first knife you absolutely killed it
The forge and that knife are perfectly made, just as always, Neil.
Thanks for sharing the vid, I hope you'll keep going with creating things and spreading the word out.
Glad you liked it Rafael! :)
Worth watching twice and liking a dozen times, if only for the bevel jig. Amazing product, be proud of it!!
I have a kit on the way. I bought a slip joint kit and I can’t wait. Very cool knife.
The darker wood on the hilt does bring out the color of the wood.
Neil, nice build and had to smile when you said you "didn't know if it was acceptable". It's your knife so it can be anything that you want.
Thanks Andrew! I wasn't sure it was the correct thing to do, gluing a piece in without a pin going through! :)
Pask Makes - future projects if you're worried about a piece like that coming apart maybe connect them together with little dowels? Might show in that location with how you filed them at a bevel but might look awesome anyway.. like contrast stripe with a couple little ovals.
@@emilylindstrom724 in a spot that small, round toothpicks would make acceptable dowels. Or he could carve/turn his own, maybe.
Sometimes Happy Accidents can add so much to a project and our creative imaginations. Loved the whole project especially that contrast in the handle. Great work!
Fantastic! Really liked the filing jig idea.
The way you show and explain fixes for mistakes is really fantastic. Keep up the good work! I'm now inspired to buy a knife making kit......
Awesome this makes sense as a logical progression after building the forge.
Awesome results for the first attempt
Beautiful! Nice elegant design.
Fantastic job Neil.
Somehow, I figured your first attempt making a knife was going to be nothing short of fantastic!! LOL!! Keep on putting out videos. I got my notification bell turned on!!
You have so many good and simple tools that are incredibly effective. They are also easy to do and easy to use. The file tool is really brilliant.
What a huge effort you put on your projects! That's why your page is one of my favorites. Thanks so much!
Bloody good knife. I'd never have guessed it was your first.
I'm glad you mistakenly cut the oak too short, the contrast on the handle makes that knife look incredible. Insanely well done on your first (of hopefully many) knife.
Good job man, the scales look great contrasting with the steel and for ur first knife you should be proud
Thanks mate - I've got to say, I'm pretty stoked with it! :)
Absolutely splendid.
Making knives is a delight!
Loved how this turned out!
That beveling jig is very clever.
That turned out really nice. Congrats.
That bevel jig is genius. One of those "I wish I'd thought of that" things. Great video.
Wow ,that came out surprisingly professional looking . bravo.Angle jigs were very well thought out .
Nice work, especially for your first knife!
Of course, the best thing is that from there it's only a small step to forging all kinds of custom tools for your needs.
Thanks for telling us the type of this gorgeous wood. I like dark front end of the handle and the simple, almost straight butt end.
No worries! Glad you liked it! :)
Almost a fawn's foot butt end. I like it too.
Wow! That knife turned out awesome! Way to problem solve by adding the bits of other wood🤙.
Good job mate that's a beautiful creation take good care of it
Really nice Pask! I agree with you. It is fantastic mate.Cheers.
Darn nice little camp knife! The handle looks great.
VERY NICE knife!
I've never made one from a kit. Right now, I'm working on a knife for myself made from a lawn mower blade! It's coming along nocely and I tried to sharpen it just to see if I got the heat treat and temper right. THAT THING SHAVE LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS! WOW!
I have added a quarter inch thick brass guard and the scales are Acacia Willow. My eldest daughter who died in a car wreck in 1996 was named Acacia so, I thought the scales made from that wood would be good.
It's a modified Bowie style blade with a 9 inch length plus the handle! I peened the whole blade to give it a more hand made look and it is just what I wanted! The next knife will be a hefty Kukuri made from a 5/16" leaf spring!
Best wishes! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Kim! Your knife sounds awesome! 😊
It turned out beautiful...
Really cool sharpening jig
It’s sharp and sharp!
You did it like a pro. Very Nice
To say that is your first knife is almost unbelievable, absolutely excellent, I know because I make them and my first knife wasnt as good as your first knife, look forward to seeing your next knife, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much mate! :)
Its a pleasure, if you get a minute take a look at my channel, its always interesting for all of us to see other makers techniques and processes thats how I learned. Thanks again, now subscribed.
Looks great!
I am just embarking on making my first knife. If it turns out any where near as good as yours I will be delighted .
Great ideas and nice jigs going to give it a go
Thanks Phillip - that's great to hear! :)
Phillip Jones hey Phillip how did it go?
Very pretty knife. Thank you for sharing.
WOW
looks amazing, well done
That's one beautiful blade, excellent craftsmanship! 👏👏👏
This is awesome , more please !
A very nice project mate. Enjoyed the video very much
Beautiful work.
Incredibly done! I want to make one!
Great video and great grinding idea. Nice knife too. thanks for sharing
Nice work! Follow up Video idea: Leatherworking a sheath and landyard out of some Roo leather
absolutely stunning project. I'd suggest welding a little crossbeam to that knife jig, so it doesn't sway as much while filing and filing would be faster that way ;)
Your bevel jig it brilliant!
I've only recently started watching your content, but you are quickly becoming one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent!! Really beautiful knife.
Super beau couteau, une vidéo bien détaillé, un très bon job.
You can't believe you made it? I can, been watching your vids for a good while now. Not many of your creations are duds, I'll tell you that much!
I can’t believe that this is your first try at knife making. Awesome!!
It just struck me what's missing from your knives you make - your Pask Makes logo on the handle (when it's not on the blade). You're a real craftsman and I'm chuffed I subscribed. :)
It’s waaaay better than the first knife I made, well done man
It is quite clear from all your videos till date that you work with a very limited set of tools and equipment. But u make up for it in ingenuity and cleverness. Just looking at some of the jigs and fixtures you make for what you actually make is enough to show that u are indeed an excellent example for the old adage " necessity is the mother ( in your case, the father ) of invention ". I wish I could teach my son the way you teach all of us viewers. love your videos Mr Pask. keep them coming. KUDOS...
That's a smart looking knife. You'll enjoy making a few more I'm sure. Especially when you start laminating different woods for the scales. 👍
Outstanding. Beautiful and obviously functional.
Thanks Mike! :)
"could be worse" . I knew you would make a nice knife. you have a really good mind for building.
That’s a beauty of a knive! Well made!
good looking knife and it looked pretty sharp to me
Beautiful knife! Well done Neil! Now comes the sheath.
Great job on your first blade. I like the serendipitous bolster you put on there. I love the contrast.
Congrats you have made it and I liked it...
Beautiful knife! I really liked that handle-filing-clamp-jig thingy. Smart way to keep the blade protected while shaping the handle. 👍🏻
That "mistake" enhanced the look of the knife by a million! :D
I for one think you did a damn fantastic job. The two woods complement each other nicely. 👍
Just spectacular (again!) amazing fixturing device when handle shaping. Brilliant, the whole thing.
A beautiful job. Now I'm going to have to try to make one myself. You're a "bad?" influence with some of the nice projects you come up with.
That’s a wood grain is just great
love the handle-shaping jig. so perfect for that application!
Yeah, when I saw that I felt sort of clumsy. I always just clamped mine in the vise to shape the handles.
This is pretty impressive. You are quite a skilled perfectionist. Even your "mistakes" turn out to be assets!
All that's missing now is a laser engraved Pask on the blade or handle! Still, this is excellent craftsmanship. Love watching you work, and the results even more ;)
Absolutely love the trick with the sharpie and drill bit! That's the way; good on ya, mate
Very well done!! Love the videos!!
Very nice, the contrasting wood really sets it off. Not a mistake at all. :-)
Beautiful knife...job well done man.
