  • In this video, we will make a Japanese tanto from crucible steel, which will be from bearing balls. In the video, we will show the process of steel making, blade forging, and knife assembly.       the powder is graphite and glass. Graphite for carbonization of the ingot. Glass flux.

    Damascus pattern beautiful,
    Bolster fitment perfect,
    Scabbard and handle in hornbeam wood gave it a stealth well finished smooth look,
    Overall a beautiful piece to be proud of!! Really enjoyed this video and even saw a new technique with the scabbard!

      @@konstantinkleber8792 It's with the melting in the crucible. He melts the steel down with those powders (glass shards and graphite) in the furnace.
      After it's been melted, the different impurities divide over the material and as they crystallise as they are quenched, those patterns show up.
      It's basically how the original Damascus blades got their pattern. It wasn't pattern welding, this is the real deal.

      @@nextlifeonearth this is not authentic wootz damascus, far from it. Its the very precise chemical composition and the way its heat treated is how you get real wootz damascus. watch al pendray and dr verhoven.

    Wow, that pattern of the steel is mind blowing. I saw some darker colored bearing balls mixed in there, where they the same just discolored or coated balls? Your wootz steel is on another level of artwork.

    the pattern in the steel looks very similar to crucible wootz damascus with all the dendrites that are popping out at you. it looks very amazing you were able to pull that off and not have it look man made like pattern welded damascus tends to be. good job!!

    I seen the words crucible and tanto in a title from FZ and thought oh this is gonna be awesome. And that is exactly what it is AWESOME! Great video guys and absolutely amazing blade and the etched finish is amazing. The wood finish is impeccable as well.

    So many great shop made jigs and unique pieces of tooling. Something tells me that ball bearing steel is insanely hard and wear resistant, what better than hornbeam to compliment this. Thank you for the video.
