Nice shave today. My grandfather never used shave soap or cream in a can. He had a mug that he added all the slivers of left over bar soap from the sinks or tub, and just used that. It all melded into one mass and worked fine for him. I still have his old mug, and Stag badger brush he used. True the new soaps have good things in them for your skin. But its nice to remember how our dads and grandpas used to do it. Great shave Mark 👍
I have a couple of Stag brushes. The boar one I use regularly. Great little brush. No matter how I try, I just can't Dig up any history on them. It's like trying to find info on the Erskine brushes.
@@rjwrightrw30 ive tried finding out history on the one i have. No luck. I no its at least 60yrs old. Thats all i no.

There is not a channel that makes a person feel so welcome and upbeat about shaving. There are a lot of excellent ones to be sure. But Mark sets the bar!
🙂
Paulhfilms is a pretty friendly channel as well. Thanks for this vid btw!
It is always fun watching reviews of products that are a bit different for one reason or another. It is cool that the soap worked relatively good, providing more options to the shaver. Have a great day.
Thank you, Steve.
In the clinic days lots of things were multipurpose. Now not so much.
Nice shave video, Mark. I was surprised to see how well the Dove bar soap formed a lather. Nice to see the Merkur 23C in action again along with PAA's Doppler shave brush. Thanks so much showcasing another option for wet shavers. So many options, so little time.😊 Have a nice rest of the week, Mark.
Thanks, Beth. I think the brush was key, though. I'd be interested to see how much lather comes of simply using your hands. Have a nice 4th of July.🙂👍
I often shave with a bar of Aleppo soap! Great stuff. With one bar, I wash my hair, myself and a shave! And invented 5000 year ago!
Great video Mark as always-I guess on my next Amazon order I will be adding a bar of Dove 🕊 soap to it 😂🤣👍
I love my Murker 23c! Gives a great shave. I think it's as mild but more efficient than the Merkur 34c
Yes, Larry. Exactly. Agree.
Hi Mark. It probably would have been a lot less messy if you has instead of using the brush just lather using your hands and rub the lather into your face as you do shaving cream using circular motions to work it into the whiskers. I have used this method for years before going back to a brush but for those who have never done this it works very well.
I've been using Dove moisturizing soap for 55 years never used anything else.
Hi Mark, Dove has some nice products! To video I have nothing to say, awesome ☺️ have a nice day.
It's the quality of Mark's brush and his lathering technique.
First off, don't hold the soap in your hand to make the lather. Just wet the face and lightly rub the bar on the face as you would a soap stick. Then lather the same. I use the Pears green bar that has lime extract in it and it's incredible. It produces amazing lather with a smooth result. I tested it using a parker SE adjustable and it clogged. Then used a standard DE, then a DE OC. It went thru like hot butter... BBS.
Confrimed about what you say rubbing Pears soap on the wetted face, even if I did this with the brown one.
Good morning Mark. Let's go shave! Classic Boom Lather! Dove is good stuff I know.
Thanks for reviewing this soap. In my opinion, it does better than the Pears soap. When you need something quick, or you are on travel, this soap would work just fine! I enjoyed using it and will continue to do so on occasion.
Agree, Jim, thanks to you and other viewers for bringing it to my attention.
I've been shaving with Dove bar soap for years. A bar lasts close to a year if it's inserted in a shaving mug, and is a lot less expensive than purchasing shave cream. I use regular Dove but will try the Men Care 3 in 1. One bar to pack while traveling is a win.
Roger, thank you very much for this comment. Really nest to hear that this is your shaving routine. Although I cannot recall the brand of soap my dad used, your comment reminds me of seeing him shave using just a bar soap in his shave mug, as well.
Thanks for the tip. I shower with dove bars all the time, will give it a try for shaving
Hey.. did you feel any difference using the Dove men’s soap bar vs regular Dove soap bar for shaving?
@@PeaceNinja007 Good question: I started using regular Dove but switched to Men + Care about a year ago. The latter works just as well, and possibly better. The front of the box says hand and body, face, and shave bar, and it works well. It doesn't dry out one's skin, either, so no need for shaving lotions.
Only very minor differences. The men's bar requires less water on the brush. The shave from either are pretty much
indistinguishable.
@@PeaceNinja007
I almost did this on vacation with a dove 4 in 1 cold pressed bar but I brought my favorite shave gel last minute 😂 probably better for my face in the end.
5:16 is the how to portion
This dude is the bob Ross of shaving
Glad to see you review that soap with a shave. When I showered with it, I was impressed with the amount of lather. So, I was waiting for your "Boom, Lather" remark 😉 Based on your experience, I'm definitely going to shave with the Dove soap. As you said, Dove could be a good travel soap for showering and shaving. BTW, I'm still getting great shaves with the Filoso blade.
Agree, Bart it'll handle a shave if you're on the road thus allowing one to pack lighter.
Hey Mark, I’m always amazed at how swift and effortless yet elegant your shaves are. Especially in this video using a non-shave soap. Wow! Perhaps I’ll resort to using one of Dr. Bronner’s bar soaps if I ever need to save room in my luggage for a weekend trip. They are widely available in grocers like walmart and kroger. Was also wondering about your beard growth pattern? Mine grows in all directions on my neck so it seems impossible to do a three pass shave with straight strokes as you do. Love to hear you talk all things wet shaving. Have a great weekend!
Vincent, thanks.:) I think there are a few things at play with my shave. (This is Generally speaking because my shave will continue to evolve, but I try to stick with these guidelines)
First, I'm fair-skinned. So my beard may not be as demanding as some other wet shavers.
Secondly, my beard tends to grow pretty uniformly in a common direction. Also, I make sure to take the beard down in stages doing multiple passes. Using a mild razor is key. For some shaves, I can finish in two passes if I have one day's growth. The final result after two passes may not be a BBS result, but it certainly ends up being a Darn Fine Shave. I may do the third pass knowing I have a good shave soap with nice glide and protection. Then, the result gets closer to BBS, maybe even BBS. But I make sure not the chase the BBS. If I have two days growth (or more) then I know I'm going to need three passes for sure.... maybe even a touch-up. But again, I simply take my time, taking the beard down in stages.
The alum block was also a game changer for me. The post shave stinging/zinging tells me if I got it right or if, perhaps, I didn't have enough protection...or maybe the razor was too aggressive for me, etc. The alum block definitely helped to gauge and refine my technique. It also told me if the razor I was using was too much for three passes. For instance, the Henson Medium is a fine razor, but with one days' growth, I shy away from doing three passes. Two passes and I'm done. If I do a third pass, the alum block really ziings.
Lastly, "30 degrees, a light touch, let the razor do all the work, gentlemen."
Regarding Dove, Dr. Bronners, etc. The dove bar made a nice lather and gave me some nice glide and protection considering it is a bar soap. Certainly not at the level of an artisan soap, but okay in a pinch. However, I made sure to use a mild razor just in case the protection wasn't there.
Likewise, I've used Dr. Bronner's for shaving and it has some nice slickness. As I recall, the lather isn't as dense as what I got with Dove, but it was slick. Dr. Bronner's is another good soap for getting a shave when you're on a pinch. But for me, I would again stay with a milder razor when using it.
HTH.
@@MarkSzorady thanks for such an in depth response! cant wait for your MMMB tomorrow!
@@vincenzo_g my pleasure.
I’ve wondered about that soap but never picked it up to try it. Thanks Mark!
That's a nice shave Mark! Enjoy your day!
Great video Mark.
All the best !
Hi, Dino! Thaks very much! Good to see you.🙂
Just do a face lather. I use the Pears green bar that has lime extract in it and it's incredible. It produces amazing lather with a smooth result. I tested it using a parker SE adjustable and it clogged. Then used a standard DE, then a DE OC. It went thru like hot butter... BBS.

Mark, thanks for the vid. Have you ever used a "headBlade" for your dome? Or, even the "defender", which I use both. Excellent choices
I used bar soap for a wet shaving. Also I use skin cream for a wet shaving. After the shave my face feels very smooth.
Just goes to show you dont really need all the "fancy" stuff. Even though shave soap recipes are obviously catered to shaving, it goes to show that some bath bars can do the trick too, however most likely a little less slick and hydrating. I remember enjoying the IAMCDB videos of him shaving with all kinds of non shave soaps. Also, thanks for the company mention at the end of your videos. Appreciate you!
My pleasure, Mark. Appreciate the nice comments.
Hey can I use this soap on my face ?? Is it suitable for dry skin
Dial White/ Gold and Ivory soaps lather really well. Dial has a bit more slickness though. I've wet shaved with bar soaps in the past with pretty good results.
Hi, Robert NES816. Thanks for mentioning these brands that perform in a similar way.
Thanks. Great shave again. 👍😍👍
Nice shave Mark. Looks like this would make a good travel shave soap. Just get a travel soap dish and I’ll bet you could make a lather right in it and no messy hands.
Very interesting video. do anything with less cost is good idea, when we have an small budge.
In a pinch, it will do. So will Irish Spring, if you want to try it.

Think about this, a hot summer morning and your the first one up in the neighborhood. You shave with dove soap finish with some aqua velva ice blue throw on some shorts and hey why not some cheap Adidas Colone and just relax.
Thanks for your info.
You could use a less-wet brush, load from the soap bar, and use a bowl to make a bowl lather, but this still makes a mess holding the bar in your hand to load.
Oh man. I still have the discontinued shave cream tubes and the very short lived shave cream tub from the men plus care line. Loved it and it disappeared
Nice shave
I’ve seen other RUclips videos with guys using bar soap to shave and I’ve used Irish Spring myself. Not bad if your in a situation without your traditional shave soap and need to shave. I imagine almost all bar soaps would work with some being better than others. Thanks for the vid. I noticed you always says “thanks Mom” after you say butterscotch is that something your mom loved?
JC, thanks for the kind words. As I wrote in another comment section (easier to cut and paste), in a nutshell, I gave up chocolate when I was 13. I did it for Lent, after which it kept on going. I simply gave up chocolate and did not eat it. My mom made the BEST chocolate chip cookies but knew I had given up chocolate. So, whenever she made Chocolate Chip cookies for the family (five boys in the family), she always made an extra batch of butterscotch chip cookies just for me. The Solar Flare brush really caught my eye due to the butterscotch handle. It immediately reminded me of mom and those special cookies. I have my dad's Gillette Super Speed razor which reminds me of him. Now, I have a butterscotch brush to remind me of mom (actually, two butterscotch brushes now). 🙂
@@MarkSzorady that is a great story. Moms are the best. I recently lost mine earlier this month and she would have done something like that. Now I’ll know the rest of the story when I hear you say that. You definitely have more willpower than me to give up chocolate.
@@jcshaves very sorry to hear of your loss. My deepest sympathies. Yes ,moms are so wonderful and special. While I miss my parents so terribly, I have such great memories. 🙂
@@MarkSzorady thanks Mark. Yes the memories are precious
I use dove soap and sometimes pears, once you go bar soap it hard to buy another. The price sinches the deal.
How do I shave with a dove soap bar? I first used the dove shea butter bar.
cut the whole bar. put the cut up bar in a van der hagen shave mug. add water to the mug with the soap inside the mug. make sure to cover the soap with water completely
microwave 30 sec
at a time one minute .
don't let the soap bubble out of the mug?
stop it cool for a sec or two? do it again?
it will congeal. leave in a sunny spot the water will be gone in a week or so?
the soap hardened in place in the mug.
don't get the soap or mug to hot a little at a time easy does it
wheelchair Larry
nice thing is that lather is not disapearing from the face , so shaving should be ok
I never lather or shave down I shave against the hair growth lol 20 years bar soap!
Which bar soap
Dr squatch is good soap to.
well this is very fine for travelling , so you dont have to bring with you your shaving soap , with such a dove bar , shaving should be good enough if it is only for one or two days, saludos desde mexico
great lather haha
It has a hi amount of steric acid should be a good lather
Probably
