I lost my dad when I was a little kid and these videos are like the shave lessons and chats we never got to have. Good stuff.
Sorry for the loss of your Father, but thanks for the nice compliment. It really makes it worthwhile to do when I hear that sort of thing.
Interesting. I've never have chats about shaving with my father, so I think it's not about if your father died when you were a kid or not.
I'm sorry for your loss. I have a father, but I don't feel like I got the full father experience. He paid the bills... which is good enough, I suppose, but I feel like I didn't get most of the crucial man-to-man talks I should have.
I got "the talk" from my mother. My father never taught me how to shave, how to date, how to haggle, how to fight, how to work out, how to play a sport... none of that stuff.
The only "father" talk I remember him giving me was the, "How to get pulled over/ interact with police" and such.
I'm not bent out of shape about it. I get that simply paying the bills is better than a lot of my peer's fathers... but... I definitely want to do better for my son.
I feel you 100%. Even though it's on RUclips, I came across wet shaving videos, and there's just something very important and manly about this stuff.
Can't put my finger on it... and my GF feels the same way. She's had boyfriends who shave when they have to, with cartridges that take as much thinking out of the process as possible... but she's never seen a guy shave like they give a damn.
I like this guy. Pretty straight forward, no BS.

Came back again to post an update. This is one of the best beginner DE shave tutorials available IMO. A tip: often, I get too much cream out of the can on the first burst. Just use what I need and "park" the rest on the side of sink for the 2nd pass. Waste not, want not!

Thanks for throwing the Real Life side of wet shaving out there!!!! Great sense of humor! We're a lot a like in that aspect. I love the brushes, the creams, the extravigance of it all... but during mid week with the crazy stuff life throws ar you. Just let me get two passes a shot of espresso and hit the road!
With that said.. the retro/vintage style of shaving cannot be beat! Slims, Fatboys, Techs.. It is fun! Thanks for the laughs, and making it real!
To make things faster I soak the brush while I shower, and then to lather the soap takes no more than 15-20 seconds and smells much better then any shaving cream ive used.
I have been using a brush and expensive soaps/creams for years and now only use a safety razor (Krona with a Feather blade) and a can of Barbasol. You can get amazing results and don’t need to spend a lot of money on soaps and brushes. Thanks for the amazing video!

THIS SUMMER... AN ADVENTURE YOU WON'T FORGET...
Dude, 10yrs after you originally posted this video, I'm here to say thanks. I decided to get a safety razor mostly to save money on blades (vs cartridges). I am not a shaving enthusiast and I don't want to join a shaving cult. I just needed to know can I continue to use Barbasol. You are the only one I found that addressed this question.
And that’s exactly why I made this video all those years ago. Glad you found it!
I bought a fatboy razor in its case for $1 at a yard sale. It was shorter and the dial indicator was a different color. I had to look it up because I didn’t know anything about them. It was a prototype from 1955, I think. I sold it on eBay to some guy in Spain lol. It was interesting to learn about razor history. I used Mach 3s at the time, myself. Now I use a straight razor. I used to use disposable razors, now I shave.
Disposable razors are the work of the devil I don't know how anyone can regularly use them
Dude, your Fatboy is a piece of history. One of the best razors ever made and built to last two lifetimes at least. Clean it every now and then and hand it down to your son .
looks like lime scale on the razors. just let em soak in vinegar for a few days.

I use a 1960's fatboy too. It was my dad's razor. It get the job done. I have found that saving gels gum up the blade and I have to remove and wipe off the gunk.
This is sort of mesmerizing...and informational. You actually took the fear out of the process. Soothing voice and humorous too. Barbasol should hire you!

Hahahaha
To anyone afraid, after the Gillette nonsense I bought a safety razor and feather blades. On my first day I shaved my face and balls. No nicks no burns, nothing. I ended up turning my aggressiveness to the max because I like a super close shave. One advice that everyone gives and worked great for me: don't put pressure, let the weight of the safety razor take care of itself and 30* angle. You'll find the angle makes a huge difference in terms of closeness of shave so it took me a few minutes to realize the optimum angle. I am extremely pleased with the results
Thank you for this video! Every other video I've watched tonight has been talking about brushes, soaps, creams, mugs, etc etc etc and it really made me doubt switching to a safety razor. I mean who wants to put that kind of investment into shaving right? I'm glad to know I don't NEED all that stuff to shave and that a can of Barbasol and some hot water will suffice. Thanks again for the upload!
I bought one of those cheap $2-3 DE razors from china as a cheap to try but had been put off using it because of the people telling me i needed brushes, soap etc and was scared of many cuts.. Thanks to this video i went and tried it with the blade it came with and some regular foam. Brilliant. Probably the easiest and best wet shave i've ever had. One tiny nick which closed off with the cold water rinse. Thank You very much sir.
Glad to hear that I could help you cut through the wet shaving dogma. Brushes and fine soaps are great, and you should try some some day, but simple rules out a lot of the time.
I've been shaving with a DE for about a year now, so my technique is pretty good. I get practically no irritation which is great coming from a guy who was plagued with horrible skin due to cartridge razors not long ago. I've been using Proraso's shave foam for a few months now and I must say, it is also fantastic. Don't let the can fool you, this stuff is practically just pre-whipped shaving cream and fantastic shaving cream at that! Granted, Proraso usually never disappoints. They have the standard Menthol which is my favorite, along with Sandalwood and Non-scented (Sensitive). So if the brush and bowl aren't your thing, I highly recommend this stuff. You can get an 11 oz. can from Amazon for $9! I have also recently purchased some Barbasol and was also impressed, it will be in my rotation. Though the Proraso still seems of higher quality, but that's to be expected. Just some info for new wet shavers out there.
For christmas i got the micro touch one from my parents along with he van der hagen soap and boars head shave set. I literally had the closest and best wet shave ever! I understand that the stuff I used isn't top quality, but even that was better than any multi blade razor I have used in the past. I no longer have any irritated skin from shaving. I'm really happy with safety razors and proper shave soaps.

Not bad... no bad... good advise, but I cannot agree with the can of shaving cream soap.. it is too chemical and irritates my skin, I gave it up years ago, I know is practical and fast, but the side effects were not worth it. I shave at night when I can take all the time i need and not rush, it is a daily experience I look forward every time. Love your collection of razors, I am done buying new razors and just began developing my vintage collections. I enjoyed your video.
32 years of shaving. Just got my first safety razor, so I figured I had better learn something. Thanks for this.
how's it going now
Aerosol shaving cream came out in the 50s around the time safety razors such as the fat boy were popular. Men for decades have lathered up with canned foam and used their trusty safety razors.
I'm glad i didn't waste my whole life using cartriges. My wife was a little scared when she saw me watching your video the first time! No really, thanks. I ended up ordering from Amazon because i'm in canada. Got a merkur and a variety pack blades. Tried the merkur and the Astra SP blades. second shave, preferring the Astra so far. I'm going to try and locate my great uncles blade stropper from WWII. It's not the cost of cartridges, i can afford them, but the DE shave is just so much better.
"Just let the weight of the razor do the work for you"
This is something that I was hoping to get some advice on. I recently forayed into DE wet shaving and it's been a great experience. Overall a massive improvement in comfort from cartridge razors. But something I've noticed is that in some spots, I have to apply some small amount of pressure. Particularly some regions around my neck. If I don't, the razor just doesn't cut anything. I can feel it begin to tug and pull as it skips over my hairs that it can't cut. I've tried a multitude of blades, ranging from Personna Blues, to Astra Platinums, to Feathers, and they all run into some kind of issue like this. I've ruled out possible faulty blades.
I'm just curious if that means I need to switch it up and get a more aggressive razor, perhaps? I've heard people say that aggressive razors are no-nos for beginners (and I'm still very much a beginner), but at the same time, I feel like that if you shave with a mild razor when you NEED an aggressive one, you'll run into more discomfort than if you just grabbed an aggressive one from the start.
Great video btw. I don't usually shave every day, just every other day or so, and wet shaving has actually helped me get a good routine going. I used to wake up as late as humanly possible to get ready for work, now I find myself waking up hours beforehand just to make sure I have enough time to thoroughly enjoy my morning shave. I like wet shaving THAT much. Shaving with can shaving cream doesn't sound like a bad thing though. In a pinch I think it'd be a great alternative. Something you may want to give a try if you haven't already are shaving sticks --- they're honestly very fast to apply and don't take very long to lather up with a brush. I use a Derby shaving stick if I need to shave in a pinch. It has a unique kind of smell. I don't know how to describe it, but it's certainly not a bad scent. It just smells clean. The Derby stuff also acts as a fantastic conditioner since it contains tallow. Even after I've done one pass, my skin still feels totally slick and smooth in that area. Heck, some mornings I apply it if I just want to condition my stubble and make my skin feel good.
Nice video. My first razor was a Gillette Mach 3. At the time I thought it was a great shave. Cartigates were expensive which ment I didn't replace them soon enough and had lots of skin irration and I hated shaving. I also noticed that the Mach 3 had a harder time cutting 3 day old growth. I am new to Safety Razors and love it. I just use can of Barbasol or Edge shave gel. With one or 3 days of growth the safety razor blades shave quality was much better than the Mach 3. I like the combination of Safety Razor and either Barbasol or Edge shave gel. I think it's a good for either a quick shave or for beginners getting their feet wet with safety razors without spending alot of money as they most likely already have one of these products. I will be switching to a more natural shaving cream or shaving soap as I think it would be better for my skin and for the environment. I am still currently researching both options and learning technique and products.
Excellent video, enjoyed this very much, you make it fun to watch too..love DE shaving too .. :-)
I also shave with my DE Metkur 33C and shaving foam. Kinda felt bad for not using the brush, soap and bowl, good to know I am not the only one doing the DE+canned foam combo.
I think any gel is better than these foams !!!
gel is 2 times the money for half the product. so you're getting a quarter of the product you'd get for foam for twice the price of a can of foam
Just started looking at de shaving videos. And one of the negatives to me was all the stuff, bowl, brush, soap. I'm just looking to get a shave. Good to know that while all of the stuff is better, it's not absolutely necessary for a good shave.
I shaved with a cartridge razor once when I was 13, wasn’t great so since 15 when I started regularly shaving I’ve used a safety razor and I’m gonna get a straight razor soon
That's what I love looking like 18 even though I'm 26 yrs

This is what I was looking for. I want to use a safety razor to line up my beard, but I don't want to get into all the lathering with a brush.
I like to shave to be fresh when I know I'm going out or something but then the next day or 2 when I don't shave I feel grows and not as fresh and fierce that clean shave makes you feel so yeah I'ma try to shave more often to have that clean and freshness and also that self-esteem throw the rof honestly now I see that have a clean shave does affect your day and how good you feel . I would not shave everyday and that was cause I was being lazy but now I know that I wanna be sharp for the day

Informative and funny. "Like those guys with 20 or more soaps behind them in racks lol." Too funny.
Love the banter in the videos, could easily listen to a podcast or some sort of radio station from you

Good video but I probably shave different than most guys, I've always shaved first, then took my bath, that way I got a total face and body rinse just in case I slung shaving cream up in my hair and got my face totally rinsed of any left over shave cream residue but to each his own.
Jack Stubbington It seems to me the better way to shave cause even if you nick yourself, after you take a shower, it's had time to stop bleeding and you get a good overall rinse anyway.
Rock N I agree with the shave before the shower. I find that the shower rids my face of all the natural oils your face puts off, leaving it kind of dry afterwards, especially with hard water. I just throw on a bit of Cremo, slap a hot towel on my face for a couple minutes to soften the beard and open the pores, and than proceed to lather and shave. Seems to work much better for me.
Ryan Lee I've been shaving for 34 years now and have always done it like that, Just seems to me the better way to go and you get totally clean and rinsed of everything. I did used to do the hot towel also but got out of it over time but it does help a lot,
Rock N I used nothing but an electric razor for the past 15 years. Have never used a blade on my face until just a few weeks ago. The skin on my face is new to razors, let alone one blade in a safety razor. So I pretty much have to do the hot towel for now, I am sure my face will toughen up a bit months from now and get used to the blade. But I gotta say, shaving is much more enjoyable than it was with the electric.
Ryan Lee I was always a wet shave guy cause that's how my Dad always shaved. I shaved with the Gillette track 2 for over 20 years, so I'm not sure how I would have ever liked the electric shave since all I ever knew was wet shaving and yes, to me I also enjoy that type of shaving as well. It's done the job since 1981, lol
Cool video. I first shaved with a safety razor when I was 16 while visiting my Aunt and Uncle in TN. Up until then (fairly new to shaving) I had used the single blade BIC and Mach 3 usually. I used his and loved the way it felt in the hand and the shave I got from it. I used it without his permission so I never uttered wanting one to my dad lol. Well now that I'm 32 and I wanted to make shaving fun again...I picked up a microtouch safety razor and have had it for a year now. I just used my last dorco blade that came with the pack (24) and purchased a 5 pack of Van Der Hagen blades from my local Wal-Mart and I have to say they are nice as well. I'd like to purchase a vintage safety razor but for now my $20 razor will do the job.
Do yourself a favor and get a real vintage safety razor that has a good weight to it. I've found that the newer lighter razors don't feel as good in the hand as vintage ones or modern ones that have a real good weight to them. It makes a huge difference in the shave, too!
You are blessed with a nice manly voice. Love your efforts
Thanks Yassir!

It's funny to see video's like this on youtube. I'm in my 40's and don't know why, but I've always used a safety razor. Except for when I was at Paris Island. I prefer the shaving soaps over the cream, but like you said, when you're in a hurry cream will do. I just never fell in the trap of multi blades. I guess their fine if you shave once a week and change the blades every month but I shave everyday. Any way not that my story matters, I just thought it funny coming across your video.

Great video. I like that you didn't push all the fancy products like so many do, and just stuck with the barbasol. I have tried many fancy shaving soaps or croaps, but I still haven't found any that work better than barbasol. And tgat's not even getting into the cost. Like you, I need to shave every day, and I need to do it in a hurry. I still haven't seen the benefits of switching to a DE over my mach 3 razors. Ive got my shave time down super fast. I'd guess an average of 2 min, and I rarely get a nick or a cut. By rarely I mean, I cant even remember the last time that I did. I only do one pass because For an every day shave I go for presentable, not baby smooth. And then I just throw on a nice aftershave, and voila. A great shave on the double. If I switch to a DE razor it will slow my down by at least doubling or trippling my shaving time, I will have to be more cautious, and I will inevitably end up with nicks and cuts often (all of which seem to be the case after extensive watching of youtube videos by even reviewers). So what benefit is there to be had? Also, could you please tell me about how often you get nicks and cuts per shave and/or per week? And do you end up with scars as a result of those cuts? I have asked others such as mantic of all those scars are from DE shaving but he did not reply. I would love to hear a reply from you. Thank you.
I rarely get nicks and almost never get cuts unless I am using the Feather platinum blades which are the sharpest in the world. Using Feathers, I might get a small nick every other shave, but it is easily stopped and doesn't leave any permanent scars or marks on your face. I used to exclusively use Mach 3 razors and got decent, fast shaves, but after changing to DE shaving, I save a ton of money and get even better shaves. Using a DE razor doesn't add too much time to your morning shave unless you do multiple passes. I usually do 2 passes, but a lot of the time I only do one and it's very quick and looks good. With one pass, there is still some stubble on your face if you rub your hand against the grain, but you can't see it, only feel it. So, my advice to you is to give shaving with a safety razor a try! I'm never going back to my Mach 3.
SinatraLennon Thank you for your reply! Actually, since my last message, I've been converted and have been deep into the hobby for the past two months, lol. I haven't touched my cartridge razors a single time since then. I see what you mean now; I haven't had a single cut even whilst shaving every day. I only got a tiny nick on my second day of DE shaving, and other than that just a couple of instances of rapiras slicing through tiny bumps. So, consider me converted! I haven't saved any money though, lol. In fact, I've probably spent more money on shaving stuff than I had combined in the what, past 15 years of shaving. The only "let down" I still have is that my shaves are on average 30minutes with 2-3 passes, vs the 2-3minute shaves I used to get with my mach3. For better or worse, now when I don't have 30min to spend shaving in the morning, I'll just skip my shave until the evening, lol. Not sure if that's good or bad.. oh well. I will definitely try sticking to a single pass if I absolutely have to. Thanks!
svtang03 Barbasol is the best!
+SinatraLennon Unfortunately, one pass with the grain doesn't cut it for me (no pun intended) even with a more aggressive/efficient razor. If I don't go against the grain, it looks like I haven't shaved. I have dark hair and fair skin, so my stubble is very visible.
AWESOME focus on using whatever works.
Exactly! Use what suits you.
You said that you shave every day. How often do you change the razor blade? 1 for a day? 1 for a week? Month? Dont say it just depends how it feels. You must have some system.
I get four or five shaves out of a blade. I use Feather blades which are the sharpest you can buy, so other blades may give you less.
I just bought a new safety razor today, and I'm waiting for it to come to the mail, and I'm so exited to use it when it comes, I love your videos! love from Norway :) Stay safe Sir!!! love your content
Let me know how it goes!
Hi I just want to get your opinion on what blade I should start with, I really want to try on that "Feather new hi-stainless blades" or should I start with a beginner friendly blade? I bought both of it, but who do you recommend trying first? I have been shaving with Gelliette razor since I was 14, and I want to try a safety razor ;) now :)
I am not a gentleman but thank goodness, I still fancy a shave.
GalCharlotte fancy =)
Excellent video. Nice to know that you don't need to use fancy soaps and brushes to DE shave. I tried it once before, but didn't have the patience for the "ritual".
After watching your video, I plan to give it another shot.
I always knew Saul was classy like this.
Awesome video?👍🏻👍🏻
Such great narration. So true.
I love my Merkur 34C safety razor and Nivea shaving gel. Use Thayers non alcohol witch hazel instead of shaving lotion 🧴 when done
Thanks! Isn’t it strange how using something as simple as a safety razor can make you enjoy shaving!
Only guy that can talk and shave, good vid!
Except everyone else on RUclips that does too.
My dad could talk, smoke, cuss, all while shaving. Had the Fatboy...didn't know that was what it was called... I still have it... your vid made me think of him!
i've started using the safety razor and coconut oil as my shaving cream before and after shaving and the results were amazing, if you get easily irritated id recommend anyone to use coconut oil, and about the ingrown hairs just avoid shaving against the direction your hair grows. pretty good video
Using coconut oil sounds like a great idea for a pre and post shave. Great advice!
@@SinatraLennon thank you! by the way I'm enjoying a lot your channel its got really good content
You Remind me of Nicolas Cage
+OVO BUDDA Many men have blue eyes. Does everybody who has blue eyes remind you of Nicolas Cage? lol
Jordan Schlansky It's the hair!
He looks like Ed Norton in the thumbnail for the Harry's Razor video.
OVO BUDDA I’m your 69 like
Hi i just turned 35 (in may) i have just started to wet shave with the whole safety razor after I use the cartridges I'm a big fan of your videos great work keep up the handy info much love from Australia
Hey Kerser! I’m glad that you found my channel and that you like these videos of mine. Did you use an electric razor up until you switched to wet shaving?
@@SinatraLennon growing up in my teens and early years it was all the match 3 i was a sucker but i see the light now
I didnt expect a good laugh when i clicked on this
Good video man
Sinatra! Watching one of your early video's your evolution is superb
Thanks Noor!
This is a great video. I thought I was the only one doing this type of video.
I recently tried the full array of Proraso products (pre-shave, cream & brush, alum bar, and after shave) whereas I previously only used Edge gel applied by hand and no other products. I can confidently say that all those other products did NOT improve my shave whatsoever (not smoother, closer, etc.).
My advice for newbies - just use cheap shaving cream and use a razor with fresh blade. Focus on technique. Done.
I shave while showering don't use mirror just judgement.. does that makes me a professional?
Blazed pochito professional...No.
But a God.
Christian Brown couldn't have said it better....
The first razor I used was one of those gullwing adjustable ones, then I went over to the dark side with Bic and so on. I recently went back to safety razors and a good restored Gillette adjustable gullwing is hundreds of dollars! I got a Merkur for $30-odd, and it's OK, but it seems like a toy compared to my dad's 1940s/1950s Gillettes.
They made those old razors to last, that’s for sure! You can get a vintage twist to open for less than $100 if you keep looking.
Well done. Thinking of trying the safety razor.
It's totally worth giving a try !
I used one in the 80's while visiting a friend in Africa. The blade must have been old. It hurt, I was howling with each pass. The pencil though, idiot proof. I'm glad I had one.
You have an awesome camera presence! I like it.
I am currently active duty military and shaving is important for me. I keep a Mach 3, and a Bic Flex 2 as my fast shaving utilities while I have my safety razors in case I get up early and do it
Thanks for your service! What shaving cream or soap do you use?
SinatraLennon generally Barborsal Soothing Aloe. Need to get some soap ans get my brush from back home.
A cartridge razor is for your typical shaver. An electric shaver is for the man who has 3 minutes left before he has to leave for work. A safety razor is the guy who gets a nice close shave that feels good and looks classical. A straight razor is for a bread of real men that have nerves of steel that can get the closest shave ever.
So you are saying that I have nerves of steel... KOOL ! 😎
Better to use a bread knife for bread.
Thank you so much for all your videos! I'm so happy I found your channel because it has been something I've looked forward to watching after work so I can learn more about DE shaving. I'm still trying to get the hang of using the right angle, and even when I think I'm holding the razor correctly I end up with razor burn, then other times it just feel amazing. Perhaps it's my prep time as I've only used shaving soaps thus far, and they seem to take longer to make a good lather. Then the lather quickly disappears on my skin. Perhaps I should try some Barbasol :) I like my Henson razor, my Wilkinson Sword feels too aggressive, and I just ordered a 60's Gillette which I'm excited to try. I will keep experimenting and learning to to find my right shave.....all thanks to you. I really appriciate you!
This is like ASMR for me :)
I am still working with my can of Barbasol which I bought on 4/1. So 7 months for $1.50 is not bad. Actually I only use it about three times a month when I am hurried and cannot spend the time on a BBS 3 pass shave. It works OK, but does dry my face and I have been leery of the ingredients. When it is gone, I will just face lather CO Bigelow which works better IMO.
Hey sir you have a nice voice you should have gone radio sir nice job sir
Nice video ... glad to hear that there's no need to go through all the Whoopla (25 passes, special soap, special bowl, fancy brush and God knows what else) to get a good shave with a DE safety razor.
I just don't have the time or patience of going through that whole ritual every morning ... just use good old shaving cream and get on with your day.
Why did you bring your razor to a one night stand?! 😂😂😂😂😂
i really like that you did this "matter of fact" like. not fancy. and looks like a clean shave!
Thanks! I like to keep it simple.
