The first record I ever bought from my paper round money was "Son this is she" John leyton Now when I pick up my old age pension I go home and still play it
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had no idea this even existed, let alone survived. I been listening to Meek since a childhood of Angela Jones, Johnny Remember Me, & Telstar, and a teen years of Just Like Eddie.
Love how they got around the fade-outs problem as these are clearly the studio recordings. Charles Blackwell 'fading' the band. So glad this promo was preserved for us to see 60 years on.
It's a 35mm theatrical release, obviously mimed, made the same way as a movie to give the impression it was ad hoc recording session. Probably cost in the region of 5000 quid in today's money to shoot this on 35mm. Which exceeds 4k for clarity and detail, as its made to blow up on a 25foot cinema screen and still retain huge detail.. Whats interesting is if you go to the cinema now, except for imax showings, you'll normally be watching it in around 2k, so technically lower resolution than this. But at the distance you are sat, it'll still look good
Ten film to arcydzieło,oddaje niepowtarzalny nastrój lat 60 tych, piosenki Johna Leytona to super przeboje,z doskonałą orkiestra. Wielkie dzięki!! Pozdrawiam z Polski, wszystkich fanów muzyki lat 60 tych. ROBERT
I was born in late 52 and although I knew the Tornados and Johnny Leyton (among many others), I knew nothing of much of this. Thanks for uploading. I always like to learn about things before my time or before I was old enough to know much.
This is really fabulous footage. I spent part of this time in Kenya, and used to play these records on the jukebox in Nairobi. I remember these Joe Meek productions, and Charles Blackwell backing very well, it was great music then and still is today. I bought all the John Leyton records and still have ‘em today.
Hi, I have a John Leyton EP from Assarand’s (?), Government Road, Nairobi. I bought it here in the Netherlands. For a wild moment I wandered if it was yours! The name on it is Yvonne Spoon. Anyone you know? 😀 My father did his National Service in Kenya. He always pronounced it, ‘Kenya’.
Fascinating window into the past, before the Beatles came along, a wealth of home grown talent emerged during the late 50s early 60s, many of the big chart makers were swept aside during the Mersey boom of 1963. I've heard Mick jagger say that prior to the Beatles we only had Acker bilk and some comedy act's. He clearly forgot about Johnny kid, cliff Richard, Marty wild, Billy Fury, Joe Brown, Shane Fenton, John Leyton, Helen Shapiro and the many more pop stars that were around in the UK long before himself
@TheBrabon1 Mick Jagger was a fucking prick anyway, the stones were about to be dropped by their label after one record cause they were shit. That is until Jagger went crying to John Lennon for a song and (how did Lennon put it) "me and Paul went into a corner for about 10 minutes and knocked up a song for him" that gave Jagger and his stones their first number. SO Jagger should've just sadi thak you and moved along like a good little boy.
Amazing Craig...such good quality film. Ah yes, ‘Wild Wind’...I have the single upstairs..is it really 60 years since I bought it!...6 shillings and 3pence ha’penny...that was a lot of pocket money for me...still, lasted 60 years so must be a bargain😉. What a brilliant find. Thank you.
After watching and watching I now do believe that it is indeed “Heinz Burt” from “The Tornados” playing the bass! I now see more of his features in 8:47. His hair style and the way he moves his head does now show it is him. As I said in my previous post, playing the bass with a thumb was how Heinz played. So nice to see four of The Tornados in their early days! Cheers.
ALSO LOOKS LIKE CLEM CATTINI ON DRUMS, WHO ALSO PLAYED ON, AMONGST OTHERS, J KIDDS' SHAKIN' ALL OVER, NOW THERE IS A MAN WITH A SERIOUSLY IMPRESSIVE CV, WHO INCIDENTALLY PLAYED THE TAXI DRIVER OR CHAUFFEUR IN THE MOVIE TELSTAR
Peter ... all surviving tornadoes had cameos in the film version of Telstar as well as others. Jess conrad, clem cattini, chas hodges, John leyton, Patrick pink, all were characters in the film and also had cameos as others. Personally wonder if it was a way to ensure they had monetary benefit. Either way its kinda cool x
I honestly never heard of Johnny Leyton before seeing this short and I've been a fan of oldies music for a long time. Not all the great music that came out of UK in the 1960's made it across the Atlantic. And for the American oldies fan, seeking out those British songs that never "made it across the pond" can lead to some wonderful undiscovered treasures like everything in this video.
I'm building a time machine to go back to the 60s, anybody want to come?,

Only if I can be the same age as I was then
sounds like youre already stuck in the 60s. stay there with this shit music i you like!
And incredible to think that the whole thing was recorded and filmed in Joe Meek's scullery 😊
The innocence of it all....But what a document of the early '60s. And what a showcase of the brilliance of Joe Meek.
Everything so clear! Another shining moment for Goddard, Meek, Leyton and The Tornados.
RIP Iain Gregory 8 April 2021. Thank you for the music.
The first record I ever bought from my paper round money was "Son this is she" John leyton Now when I pick up my old age pension I go home and still play it
still playing it Rob
What was the second?
This is the greatest clip I've ever seen
Love this what a great production, outstanding black and white film.
I was born in 61 and still appreciate this music
Born in ‘99 and so do I!!
'Wild Wind' and 'Son This Is She'! What a treat. Thanks for sharing.
I'm watching this film with my son every evening
Those were magical years. Unique and full of talents. Wonderful songs, melodies and choruses. Thanks for that great video!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had no idea this even existed, let alone survived. I been listening to Meek since a childhood of Angela Jones, Johnny Remember Me, & Telstar, and a teen years of Just Like Eddie.
Well...What a treat this was to watch....
THIS is flippin' fantastic! Great filming along with that beautiful, bizarre Meek sound... Just great.
Joe meek ,bloody genius
being a child born the sixties I only wished it was the late forties to enjoy such marvelous music but thanks to RUclips I can today.
Carson White its never too late
I bought all his singles, my first real idol back then
Love how they got around the fade-outs problem as these are clearly the studio recordings. Charles Blackwell 'fading' the band. So glad this promo was preserved for us to see 60 years on.
Isn't the whole thing mimed to studio recordings
@@cloudusterable Read my post again, Peter. I clearly state they're studio recordings.

John, you are one very special man
A natural vocal from John and the backing singers 👍🏻
Great little film. Thanks for sharing.
John Leyton's Lonely City is for me the Iconic pre beatles 60's sound.Great movie.
A very early form of pop video/promo, amazing these film shorts are still around.
This is just utter fab!!

This wasn't before your time.
It was 1961.
I was born on 1950 and have a friend who played bass for Johnny kid before he was famous.
I was born in 66 but I love this music and those times

Sorry, that is Yvonne Spaan. That makes more sense!
I'll go back to the 60's anytime !
I remember this the first time In the 21st century it gets even better
The reverb Joe had makes everything sound eerie… the BV's are otherworldly.. amazing ❤️
I was 10 when this was made l stumbled upon Johnny by accident glad l did.
Most excellent, not seen this until today. Thanks for sharing....Robert Duke was a Joe Meek alias.
Wat a time to live in awesome
I saw John Leyton in the early 60s. It was in a Working Mens Club in County Durham, Spennymoor I think. He was billed with Gene Vincent. Happy Times.
Love these times
Absolutely brilliant,
1961 till now 2022 legends never die diamonds are forever stay strong stay safe everyone takecare xxx
Never seen this before, just wonderfull...🥰🥰🥰🥰
Now this is British History I can get next to.
Classic stuff.Thanks for upload
Excellent 👍🏴👍From Bonnie🏴
The Beatlesmania distroyed alot of innocent past humanity and art.
I remember this stuff! I was little but it must have made it over here to the USA. I dig those sopranos in the background.

TheBrabon1 , everything better before the Beetles
These guys were pioneers! Imagine being in the van with the lads, guitar case under your arm, driving up to play Yarmouth on a Saturday in 1961!

If this was shown anywhere in the US at the time, the howls of laughter would be heard back across the Atlantic.
I thought this guy was American because of the way he sung👌

The truth is that most of the music produced in Britain in the 1960's never made it to America for the simple fact that it was awful.
Brilliant!!

What shame the silly new generation don’t even know this beauty
Robert Stigwood's name at the beginning - he was a budding mover and shaker then and only in his twenties.
He managed both John Leyton and Iain Gregory.
