Helen Shapiro is the girl at the begining of this clip , gosh its so good to be able to see John again he was so cool , all us girls went mad over these great singers we had good taste in those days .... sexy guy this one....
A tremendous voice! It's sad his singing career didn't have more staying power but sadly that's the way the music industry treats most groups/singers. One moment you're the rage and everything you release is a hit and then -- inexplicably -- a singer becomes old news and falls off the charts for good.
While I was driving back home, without oticing I was humming this long forgotten song! I immediately googled it and found it here! Great Song! 65 years old man!
Love John leyton cant help but laugh when hes having a sly drag on his cigarette during the instrumental break thats what i call stardom twinkle twinkle ha ha
That's my girl in the window...another post I haven't ever seen...Johnny is new to me also. The cigarette break seems to catch everyone's attention. Great voice and REBEL...THANKS for posting. We Yanks have so much to learn from the incredible BRITS!!! Wayne In Texas!!! Keeping it real for Helen!!!
melodys and words that you could relate to and a whole range of various singers male and female that made the 60s exciting for us teenagers of those years
this is such a good record i have the original vinyl handed down from my older sister never understand why it was never a big hit in this country one of his best songs i think in uk
John Leyton - Lonely City Deep in the heart of a lonely city I wandered sad and all alone Then in the heart of a lonely city I saw the girl that I want for my own She, just like me, was alone in the city Searching for someone who really could care Then in a moment I'd lost my heart To this lovely young girl who was standing there Say, little girl, you've taken my loneliness away You and your smile have turned my night into day Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ohh-ooh-ooh Well, now in the heart of a lonely city I'll never wander sad and alone Evermore by my side and holding my hand Is this lovely young girl that I've made my own Say, little girl, you've taken my loneliness away You and your smile have turned my night into day Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh ohh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ................
It was probably Joe Meek's flat in Holloway Road, London. Joe produced John Leyton records. You may have seen the BBC Arena special a few years ago about Joe Meek which showed footage taken in his flat of some of his recordings being made. It was fascinating.
I think that they've just exhausted the lyrics , music & themes . If they get sounds or words near any past hits ,they get accused of plagiarism ......
True Story: I met John Leyton after a performance in a tiny town called Melksham, south of London. When the end of "The Great Escape" was brought up, he quickly mentioned, "Yep, I get away every time!"

Glad this is on here, otherwise I would have had to lived with the track I pulled off a 53 year old 5" reel to reel tape that I've had sitting around since I recorded it off of Radio Luxembourg in 1962.
You've worked with all these people? Dude, you are just Sooooo very lucky! I've always loved Joe's excessive use of the reverb etc.....but to me, it just sounds as great & as innovotive as Spectres 'Wall of Sound'.......Maybe with some more money & Confidence in hi work, Joe would have been our Phil Spectre (I kinda thin he was anyway!) Keep posting this fabulous music and your wonderful footnotes! :D
It is highly dobtful this is in 304 holloway road. It is probably just set up in a studio. Joe meek used to record the strings separate and there would never have been that many of them. That man could work wonders.
You're right. It should have been a much bigger hit. But the film that it was featured on - It's Trad Dad was really not the best vehicle for promoting records to teenagers as the film concentrated more on jazz. If it had featured in a film similar to The Young Ones it would have done a lot better.
Love John Leytonstone’s music we even share the same birthday happy birthday to us on the 17 feb
Proud to say that,l have met John Leyton.l love him so much Bless Him
When did it happen?
Helen Shapiro is the girl at the begining of this clip , gosh its so good to be able to see John again he was so cool , all us girls went mad over these great singers we had good taste in those days .... sexy guy this one....

John Leyton was in the film the great escape
While I was driving back home, without oticing I was humming this long forgotten song! I immediately googled it and found it here! Great Song! 65 years old man!

Brilliant. I never noticed that
I have been loving this song since my early childhood. Now I'm 39 years old and this song still inspires me. Is awesome.
Keeping it real for Helen!!!
melodys and words that you could relate to and a whole range of various singers male and female that made the 60s exciting for us teenagers of those years
Cool track! Cool singer! Great production!
My youth hero, bought most of his singles
this is such a good record i have the original vinyl handed down from my older sister never understand why it was never a big hit in this country one of his best songs i think in uk
2024 Wild Wind n Johnny Remember Me, ah the 60s I crave that time.
Best singer in the sixtys
I love this song, brings back many happy memories of my youth.
I was 14 years old . very nice song !! I love this.69 years old man.
merci pour cette belle chanson
John Leyton - Lonely City
Deep in the heart of a lonely city
I wandered sad and all alone
Then in the heart of a lonely city
I saw the girl that I want for my own
She, just like me, was alone in the city
Searching for someone who really could care
Then in a moment I'd lost my heart
To this lovely young girl who was standing there
Say, little girl, you've taken my loneliness away
You and your smile have turned my night into day
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh, ohh-ooh-ooh
Well, now in the heart of a lonely city
I'll never wander sad and alone
Evermore by my side and holding my hand
Is this lovely young girl that I've made my own
Say, little girl, you've taken my loneliness away
You and your smile have turned my night into day
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh ohh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ................
I saw the film when it came out and bought this single. Thanks for bringing it back
Brilliant backing production
The carrier of John Leyton was ruined when the Beatles appeared
Johnny Layton was a favorite of mine!
Was that Helen Shapiro at the beginning?
That is a futuristic mic for 62!
Muy bonita cancion.

The Sixties, best Music ever..........not as artificial as today.......
I think that they've just exhausted the lyrics , music & themes . If they get sounds or words near any past hits ,they get accused of plagiarism ......
Turbocompound. I agree with you.
True Story: I met John Leyton after a performance in a tiny town called Melksham, south of London. When the end of "The Great Escape" was brought up, he quickly mentioned, "Yep, I get away every time!"
I think 2 of the girl backing singers are those who appeared in the film "The John Leyton Touch" doing "Wild Wind"
Głęboko w sercu samotnego miasta
Włóczyłem się smutny i całkiem sam
Wtedy w sercu tego samotnego miasta
Zobaczyłem dziewczynę, której chcę dla siebie
Ona tak jak ja była w mieście samotna
Szukając kogoś komu by na niej zależało naprawdę
Wtedy w jednej chwili straciłem moje serce
Dla tej cudownej dziewczyny, która tam stała
Mówię, dziewczynko, zabrałaś samotność moją stąd
Ty i twój uśmiech zmieniły noc moją w dzień
Oh, oh-oh-oh..........
Ty i twój uśmiech zmieniły noc moją w dzień
Oh, oh-oh-oh..........

I have been searching for this song for years!! It was my favourite at the time!! Thank you for sharing it!!!
everybody year about: alvis , anka and Sedaka , but this is the great talent of the 60's for male singers
Glad this is on here, otherwise I would have had to lived with the track I pulled off a 53 year old 5" reel to reel tape that I've had sitting around since I recorded it off of Radio Luxembourg in 1962.

Moja młodość. Piękna piosenka.
Never seen him with a cig before, I'm not very glad of that and still he's the class.
I don't think he was a smoker. He was probably told to do that for effect. It looked cool in those days !

It's Trad Dad
The great Helen Shapiro.
I remember him in "The Great Escape".
I remember him as Ginger Hebblethwaite in the BBC Biggles series.
Von Ryan's Express!
🌹🌹🌷🌷🌷🌷
sixties,nostalgi
It is highly dobtful this is in 304 holloway road. It is probably just set up in a studio. Joe meek used to record the strings separate and there would never have been that many of them. That man could work wonders.
THANKS ... 8)
This isn't a filming of the recording, it's just a set with him miming. It would have been recorded at Holloway Road.
The master was recorded at IBC studios in London.
Brawo Leyton
Just think in a year or 2 he will be digging holes with one of the all time tough guys in The Great Escape, aka C.Bronson..respect..
John! Step AWAY from the cigarette! NOW!
Nah, it's makes my voice so good.
He's the one bab superman
You're right. It should have been a much bigger hit. But the film that it was featured on - It's Trad Dad was really not the best vehicle for promoting records to teenagers as the film concentrated more on jazz. If it had featured in a film similar to The Young Ones it would have done a lot better.
Where are is head phones?
When he hit that cigarette my eyes almost rolled out of my head
What do you mean?
I don't think he was a smoker. Probably told to do that for effect - it looked cool in those days !
end of the American style....he's ACE tho
Leyton doing his best Gene Pitney.great tune.
At least the echo would have been natural.
Who knows did ever John Leyton sing songs of the Beatles?
@seftonwallet they all did then...now you cant have one in a pub..times change eh
1:11 pociągnął sobie cigareta. Teraz za to to by go niejaki Frans Timmermans wsadził do więźnia.
Not sure if I remember John Leyton. Not bad.

May i ask how he is worse than Hitler?
made just for me from the v.
Yes, hope they can get some rest what with Steve McQueen bouncing that ball all the time.
Helen serviert das Frühstück ?
Da gehn einem die Schuhe auf !
Helen Shapiro!!!
Yep otherwise it would have footage of John singing in Joes toilet.
Eeeekk!! At 1:12, he does the unmentionable. He's worse than Hitler!
not like elvis , sedaka ,and Anka he has soemthing unique , different from them.
get a grip, its obviously a joke
Moja Młodość. Piękna piosenka.
