The Great Escape is my all-time favorite movie! I've watched it over 100 times. When I was in middle school, I did a book report on it. Got an A on it. I loved the characters, the action and the realism of it. And still do.

Great to see someone that not only survived the plot of a movie I've seen so many times, but the many decades since.

I grew up in the sixties and lived in Great Holland near Frinton on Sea. My parents were friends with Tony Leyton, John's brother, and his wife Joan. I was also friends with John's nephew, David, aka "Diggi". He told me some interesting anecdotes about his uncle's film roles. ☺

Yes. Great interview. WHERE is the location this was shot? It looks like the location where McQueen first pulls off and ducks behind the small barn, ready to make his last stand. That would’ve been nice to include in the video if that was indeed the precise location! Where was the interview recorded?

What many younger people and Americans don't realise, is that John Leyton was very humble as he talks about working with big star's.
I expect John leyton was glad to get out of England and film abroad during 1962, because at this time he'd have been chased down the road by teenagers, his name was all over the papers, he was being heard regularly on the radio, In Britan he was at that Time a major pop Artist.
A short 10 minute promo film had been made about him in late 1961 called "The John Leyotn Touch" this was shown before a movie at cinema, a kind of short infomercial, by the end of 62 the hits had all but dried up

The title of “Tunnel King” belonged to Canadian Wally Floody. In the film, Tunnel King was Charles Bronson, as Danny

Also with the Canadian contributions from a couple of books I have read in the past. The Scrounger was from Calgary and I believe the Surveyor was also Canadian.
Wally Floody wasn't given a credit as an advisor for the movie. He was on the set from the start with Sturgis to get it right.

To be fair, the end credits of the movie names two "tunnel kings". So officially there are two in the movie.

Is that possibly the shed that Hilt's hid behind from the germans after propping up his Triumph against it?.....Cool to think that wooden structure would still be standing....
