Penguin didn’t kill Victor because he knew too much. He killed him because he didn’t want anyone he cared about around him anymore because he didn’t wanna give people that were coming after him that leverage of using people he cared about to get to him, because like he said himself “It’s too much.” They did it with his mom and he almost lost it.
I used to think that but now I personally think he saw no more use for him(what made me think that is I recently watched the penguin again. In the 1st episode when penguin's about to shoot vic for trying to steal his rims and vic is begging for his life you see a look in penguin's face and eyes similar to a predator that found his prey)
Yeah exactly he literally says it when he kills Victor he realized when Victor said he cared for him he can’t have anyone use anyone against him so he dealt with it himself
I see what you’re saying but end of it you clarified his point… him being that close meant he knew too much the fact he was family is the same reason he couldn’t jeep him around. He knew too much/he was close is the same thing… end of day they weren’t family because of blood but because of their journey and what he knew. The whole point of the scene was to show why he’s such a bad guy he didn’t care about Vic just like he didn’t care about his mother. Difference is his moms can’t talk now but Vic could
Well from a creative standpoint it was done to show the audience just how repulsive a human being Penguin is... which I don't mind but it seemed dumb to me as Victor was still a massive asset for him who he could have manipulated for years, which I don't think fits with the Penguin's character personally I think he's smarter than that

I hated this show. In episode 1 it gave you high hopes for a good series. Then, in my opinion, the writing got utterly ridiculous. So many things that happened in this show were so unrealistic and so unbelievably silky and the only reason it gets a pass is because it’s based off of comics. Don’t get me wrong, Farrell was good and most of the cast was good, but the writing was just cringe. Also, his infatuation with his Motherxaas creepy. I understand loving your Ma, but he acted like he wanted to marry his Mom. Very uncomfortable and unnecessary to the plot. And Penguin killing Victor because he didn’t want people he cared about being used as leverage is just stupid. I can list a bunch of ridiculous plot points but this post would be five paragraphs long so I’ll stop here. Verdict: 5/10- overrated.
Cristin Milioti was absolutely phenomenal in her performance as Sofia Falcone. Captured every scene she was in. Her and Colin worked wonderful together.
The penguin is a villain…let’s not forget this. We forgot this until the final scene with the kid. That scene was to remind us of that fact. Love the show. Pretty amazing.
This is how villains should be depicted. None of that crap that Disney marvel/Star Wars and wb gives us. In reality some people are just too vile and evil to be redeemed. They made villains like joker, kraven, morbius, venom, darth vader, suicide squad into sensitive hard asses in the recent decade lol
@@wintergreen2.073 when did they make Vader sensitive? Villains like the Joker are very hard to do, if you just say they're evil for evil's sake, 99% of the time they are shit and one dimensiona. A villain needs motivations, a villain needs to think they are the hero of their story. Vader genuinely believed he was the hero, he clearly wasn't, hell even Hitler believed he was the hero of the story. Vader as a character hasn't changed since the prequels.
This was the best show I've seen in awhile. Penguin is the most duplicitous, Machivalean, smooth talking snake of a character I've ever seen. 10 of 10.
This show had the best writing and acting we've seen in a television series in many years. HBO used to have excellent shows. Sad it was a limited series.
he has many redeeming qualities, hes resourceful, quick thinker and talker, and knows when to show humility. the problem is that these are terrifying qualities in a sociopath.
The thing I loved the most about Oz is that he embraced his uniqueness, weirdness if you will, and turned it into a strength. Just what he told Vic when he was stuttering.
I have not seen it, I don't have any extras besides basic cable...but I love Colin Farrell. He has played very diverse characters. I loved him in -In Bruges! Prosthetics were amazing. I'm going to watch it- (Penguin) with my son Michael. When I visit in March. 😊
I agree Michael - Penguin was a brilliant series. The acting and makeup were extraordinary. But the writing is what really set it apart. Truly amazing. Like you said - we couldnt wait to see what Oz, or Sofia, would do next.
The Penguin didn’t really love his mother. She was a reflection of his need for validation and to be number one. He needed her as another vehicle to feel that he was unrivalled. That’s why he let his brothers die. If he loved her, he would have let her go and he never would have kept her alive (against her wish to not be in a vegetative state). That’s why she’s crying at the end. She knew he was a monster and pretended otherwise because she couldn’t bring herself to kill him.
I completely agree and dug a little deeper and ChatGPT said something I fully agree with: Key Aspects of Their Relationship: 1. Enmeshment and Overdependence: • Oswald and his mother are often portrayed as overly attached, with Oswald depending on her for emotional support and validation. This lack of boundaries creates an unhealthy dynamic where Oswald sees her as the sole source of love and approval. • Psychologically, such relationships can stem from a lack of other secure attachments in early life. Oswald’s isolation, bullying, and lack of social acceptance may have intensified his dependence on his mother as his only safe and validating connection. 2. Narcissistic Dynamics: • Some interpretations suggest Oswald’s mother may have treated him as an extension of herself rather than as an independent person. This dynamic, often seen in narcissistic parenting, can result in a child growing up with a fragile sense of self and becoming overly focused on gaining the parent’s approval. • Oswald’s deep need to please his mother and his disproportionate reactions to any perceived threats to her or their relationship align with this. 3. Maternal Idealization: • Oswald’s mother is often portrayed as the one person who saw him as special and valuable despite his physical appearance and social rejection. He idealizes her as a loving figure who counterbalances the world’s cruelty. • This idealization can lead to distorted emotional priorities. Oswald might sacrifice logic, morality, or even his own well-being to maintain her approval or defend her honor. 4. Fear of Abandonment: • Many depictions of The Penguin show him as a deeply insecure character who fears being alone or unloved. His mother’s role as his primary (or only) attachment figure exacerbates this fear, making him overly protective and possessive of her. • This is often a hallmark of attachment trauma or neglect, where a child’s early relationships fail to provide consistent care, leading to intense clinginess in adulthood. 5. Oedipal Undertones: • In some versions of the story, Oswald’s relationship with his mother has subtle (or overt) Oedipal elements. He may view her as not just a caregiver but also a quasi-romantic figure, particularly if he lacks other close relationships. • Freud’s Oedipus complex theory suggests that unresolved early attachment conflicts with the mother can manifest as inappropriate dependency or rivalry for her attention, which could explain the possessiveness and jealousy Oswald exhibits. 6. Stunted Emotional Development: • Oswald’s lifelong rejection and trauma likely hindered his emotional maturity. His relationship with his mother may reflect a childlike need for unconditional love and protection, which he cannot find elsewhere. • This arrested development can lead to an exaggerated and often unhealthy bond with the one person who represents safety, even if the relationship itself is dysfunctional. Psychological Theories in Play: • Attachment Theory: Oswald’s behavior aligns with an insecure or anxious attachment style. His fear of abandonment and obsessive need to protect and please his mother are hallmarks of someone whose early attachment needs were inconsistently met. • Psychodynamic Theory: His over-identification with his mother and unresolved conflicts with her may contribute to his lack of emotional regulation and his criminal behavior. • Trauma Theory: Bullying, rejection, and physical deformities likely contributed to feelings of inadequacy, making his mother’s love appear as his only source of worth. Impact on Oswald’s Personality and Behavior: The combination of these psychological dynamics may explain why Oswald exhibits traits like: • Obsessive protectiveness of his mother. • Intense rage or violence toward those who disrespect or harm her. • Difficulty forming healthy adult relationships. • A skewed moral compass, where his devotion to her supersedes ethical considerations.
I never thought I'd see the day that Michael Franzese would drop names like Batman, Catwoman & the Riddler in a video... and I'm here for it! And no, The Penguin is too far gone. Batman needs to put a foot where the sun don't shine. Brilliant series! I hope Farrell & Milioti get Emmys for it. Also, review great movies. Crime or otherwise.
One other thing between Sopranos and Penguin is that Christina Milioti played not only Sofia but Johnny Sacks daughter in the Sopranos. She almost looks similar to Toni Kalem, who also played Angie Bompensiero in The Sopranos.
I loved this show! Still blown away by Colin and Sofia’s performances. And I love the show reminds you that at the end of the day… Penguin is still a Villain
Hearing Michael explain the plot to the best Batman/comic book series of all time and one that is arguably the successor to the sopranos is absolutely perfect. I love hearing his takes on different types of mob media and the inaccuracies .when the show was coming out I was literally thinking to myself “ i wonder what that dude has to say about this. I wonder if he likes it”.
The show had a lot of comic book stuff like the red crystal mushrooms, but I've been telling people (adults in their 40's and 50's) it's the best drama series I've seen in many years because of the acting and the character arcs. Great comic book show with real life takes on human behavior.
Batman was created in 1938, the prohibition was repealed in 1933 hardships of the great depression and the bootleg era were fresh in the memory of the creators. The modern day interpretation of Gotham still feels that it has both elements the organized crime and the great depression from that era.
CF took a page from Heath Ledgers playbook and absolutely baptized himself into this character. Its an award winning preformance that no one saw coming. I think everybody who worked on the show deserves an award imo. I just watched it out of curiousity and immediatly made the connection to the style of Goodfellas. Just like Marvel put the "comic" back in comic book movies, DC with this project is learning that their direction needs to be darker and more R rated because, in essance, thats what the Batman universe is.
The Penguin had so many lofty comparisons, invoking a gamut of gangster tales from “The Godfather” to “Scarface” to “The Sopranos. Colin gave a phenomenal performance and i absolutely loved Sophia Gigante.

Fascinating to hear this perspective from someone who would know the real mob. Some folks have looked at the characters in this series and speculated that Oswald Cobb is a pathological narcissist and perhaps exhibits traits common to Vulnerable Narcissists or AKA Covert Narcissists and other personality disorders. This series is amazing and I would be curious to know just how many people associated with mob families, if any, actually exhibited this level of narcissism for them to be considered individuals with a personality disorder. Mr. Franzese brings up the comparison to the Sopranos and I think people keep coming back to a comparison because both shows focused on rich character explorations, but were also honest portrayals in that they both sought to underline the reality that the central characters were truly villainous people. At times we the audience would come to connect with the characters, but the writers and actors would always be smart enough and had enough integrity to show us that the main characters were dangerous and loathsome individuals who built their criminal empires on betrayal, blood, and the bones of their own communities.
He didn't kill Victor because he knew too much. He killed Victor because he cared about him too much and knew that people could use Victor as leverage like they used. His mother and his mother didn't make it either at the end. Well you'll have to watch it. Awesome show!
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and have reviewed films for a magazine and have ran film festivals for 6 years. This series was dark, but the writing, acting, sets, cinematography and even the costuming was flawless. Definitely looking forward to season 2. This had shown just how ruthless and brutal the Penguin is.
0:49 Maybe there aren't many American movies or TV shows left to react to, but you can react to Italian movies or tv shows (like Gomorrah), or to Chinese/Hong Kong movies like Infernal Affairs that inspired the Martin Scorsese movie The Departed or to Japanese yakuza movies etc.
I love this. From a real former Mafia guy to genuinely love this proves how good it was. I love that Michael also brought up the acting and the makeup and gave everyone props. Excellent stuff!
Michael, Pinguin betrayed his mother 2 times, by killing his brothers and later in the show he refuses to tell the truth even when his mother risks losing a finger. And maybe a 3th time by never in her life giving her what he promised untill she's a plant, and then he lets her sit there in hell.So 4th times maybe even.
Hey Mike, I really enjoy your content, and have a question about the life. When power changes hands in the mob, and a new boss takes over is there any type of inheritance? Does the new Don receive any money, or get access to the family's money? Hope you have a blessed year.
Whatever kick ups the previous boss received, the new boss can keep it same amount or higher or lessen it. Each captain would kick up. Also, the boss would have his own businesses and schemes that prob the underboss or captains will handle for him. There is no pool of money or inheritance that is handed to a new boss
Michael, I would love it if you would do crime films in general not just mafia movies (though I love your input on these shows and films) and thanks for mentioning the one man show! I’m very excited for that!
You know my favorite two bullet points that have carried over into multiple iterations of the penguin have been. Oswald really cares for his mother. And his father has always been played by Paul Reubens better known as Pee-wee Herman.

this is one of the best reviews of the penguin because this guy is captivated by the show but has no grasp of Batman lore the place of the show in it's universe, or the arcs of the characters yet he is really in to it

Totally worth it I started seeing it on hbo and it was 3rd episode so I finished and went back to first 2 but I never saw the last Batman movie yet either but I will now, but fan of Batman or not it’s a really good series wouldn’t even know it was related to comic books.
I think expanding the movie reviews section is a good idea. On the food topic, I have heard Americans say they drop large amounts of weight with no major diet or lifestyle changes when they overseas. I hope this issue can be resolved.
Before Michael Francis even said it, I was like “ his mom he’s good to his mom !” lol that scene when were you first get introduced to her kind of made me a little misty eye cause it reminded me of my father. I would say it was modeled after the Sopranos bc it would be a very easy blueprint just over exaggerated characters in the DC universe Sopranos on steroids kind of .
the fact of the naming is because of the old comics code authority, they couldnt be direct about it, so they had to come up with kinda sorta names to get around the CCA. he was always sort of a mob boss in training/night club owner until 1992 when they tried to turn him into a deranged mutant penguin man. Im glad they are getting back to his original roots. fyi, the batman comics always started out as a mob drama, which is why every movie that does the origin have some sort of mob family type organization in it, from the first big screen adaptation (minus the old 40s serials) to the most recent.
A real mafia boss explaining the plot to a Batman spin-off feels like something out of Interdimensional Cable.

Cristin Milioti also played as Catherine Sacrimoni, the younger daughter of the New York City mobster Johnny Sacrimoni from HBO Max's The Sopranos.
And nice backside too
She’s so fine
Actually she was Teds wife in how I met your mother
The penguin is a villain…let’s not forget this. We forgot this until the final scene with the kid. That scene was to remind us of that fact. Love the show. Pretty amazing.
That final scene with the kid broke my heart! It made penguin a POS and couldnt like him after that!
@@Rob-z7k That was the point. Great writing.
@@Rob-z7koh something happens?

I watched it directly after the sopranos so it was definitely a treat to get back into that type of environment
He has one redeeming quality: he never, ever quits.
And he's super intelligent
he has many redeeming qualities, hes resourceful, quick thinker and talker, and knows when to show humility. the problem is that these are terrifying qualities in a sociopath.
He knows how to exploit people, he finds weaknesses and knows how to exploit them.
this is also true for meth addicts, oh wait.
The thing I loved the most about Oz is that he embraced his uniqueness, weirdness if you will, and turned it into a strength. Just what he told Vic when he was stuttering.
Colin’s performance is noteworthy and bound for accolades and awards. Good job Michael.
he's not gay, black or trans....so doubtful.
I have not seen it, I don't have any extras besides basic cable...but I love Colin Farrell. He has played very diverse characters. I loved him in -In Bruges! Prosthetics were amazing. I'm going to watch it- (Penguin) with my son Michael. When I visit in March. 😊

Hopefully this will change 🙏
Yess I was sooo excited to see both Collin and Christina(actress who played Sophia) are nominated. Excellent writing and acting.
@@djohn1671that’s pretty much grounds for him to win
His mom was for him, what little puppies are for insta w#hores. Just a validation and quick fix for happiness
He also got his girl to dress up in her dress stlye her hair like her and talk to him the way she did
I completely agree and dug a little deeper and ChatGPT said something I fully agree with:
Key Aspects of Their Relationship:
1. Enmeshment and Overdependence:
• Oswald and his mother are often portrayed as overly attached, with Oswald depending on her for emotional support and validation.
2. Narcissistic Dynamics:
• Some interpretations suggest Oswald’s mother may have treated him as an extension of herself rather than as an independent person.
3. Maternal Idealization:
• Oswald’s mother is often portrayed as the one person who saw him as special and valuable despite his physical appearance and social rejection. He idealizes her as a loving figure who counterbalances the world’s cruelty.
• This idealization can lead to distorted emotional priorities. Oswald might sacrifice logic, morality, or even his own well-being to maintain her approval or defend her honor.
4. Fear of Abandonment:
• Many depictions of The Penguin show him as a deeply insecure character who fears being alone or unloved. His mother’s role as his primary (or only) attachment figure exacerbates this fear, making him overly protective and possessive of her.
• This is often a hallmark of attachment trauma or neglect, where a child’s early relationships fail to provide consistent care, leading to intense clinginess in adulthood.
5. Oedipal Undertones:
• In some versions of the story, Oswald’s relationship with his mother has subtle (or overt) Oedipal elements.
6. Stunted Emotional Development:
• Oswald’s lifelong rejection and trauma likely hindered his emotional maturity. His relationship with his mother may reflect a childlike need for unconditional love and protection, which he cannot find elsewhere.
• This arrested development can lead to an exaggerated and often unhealthy bond with the one person who represents safety, even if the relationship itself is dysfunctional.
Psychological Theories in Play:
• Attachment Theory: Oswald’s behavior aligns with an insecure or anxious attachment style.
Impact on Oswald’s Personality and Behavior:
The combination of these psychological dynamics may explain why Oswald exhibits traits like:
• Obsessive protectiveness of his mother.
• Intense rage or violence toward those who disrespect or harm her.
• Difficulty forming healthy adult relationships.
• A skewed moral compass, where his devotion to her supersedes ethical considerations.
that applys to most of the other mobsters who love their mother
Plus Oswald let Sofia torture his mother! If he really loved her he would say anything to stop it!!!
I never thought I'd see the day that Michael Franzese would drop names like Batman, Catwoman & the Riddler in a video... and I'm here for it!

Penguin is an incredible series. Farrell is unreal. Just wow. The actress who plays Sophia is awesome too.

He betrayed everyone even his mother. Did his mother not make him promise to "release her" if she looses her mind. In the end he kept her around for his need.
We should work to lighten the load of mankind, Imagine if we did...

I could totally picture Michael in a Batman movie.
YES, PLEASE REVIEW DIFFERENT MOVIES! I truly love your interpretation of things.
The Penguin show is like soprano episodes
I'm sure that it was modeled after sopranos.
I would say it was modeled after the Sopranos bc it would be a very easy blueprint just over exaggerated characters in the DC universe Sopranos on steroids kind of .
For years I've been saying Colin Farrell is a top notch actor. One of the most underrated of his generation
16:09 Momento, and city of God I would like to hear your reviews
HAPPY NEW YEAR MICHAEL

The Penguin's going to appear in The Batman 2 next, and then in season 2.
the fact of the naming is because of the old comics code authority, they couldnt be direct about it, so they had to come up with kinda sorta names to get around the CCA. he was always sort of a mob boss in training/night club owner until 1992 when they tried to turn him into a deranged mutant penguin man. Im glad they are getting back to his original roots.
fyi, the batman comics always started out as a mob drama, which is why every movie that does the origin have some sort of mob family type organization in it, from the first big screen adaptation (minus the old 40s serials) to the most recent.
