Why Would You Do This?! Aqua Cast Resin on a Tumbler

- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- Ever since I saw Louise Singleton demo this new acrylic resin called Aqua Cast, I just had to put it on a tumbler. So I did! I'm sure some folks won't understand why, but in a nutshell: I wanted to, and I love experimenting! I also colored the Aqua Cast with Brusho Watercolour Crystals for a gorgeous, textured rainbow effect. The epoxy resin gods laughed and laughed and laughed.

If there’s any interest, I’d like to try a deep-black Aqua Cast tumbler and the brush on either gold/silver marbling powder OR different Woodes Goodies’ color-shifting micas, to bring out the texture. Whaddya think?
Yes please.
I think that would be beautiful! Maybe a wash to catch the low points and dry brushing to catch the high points? 🤔
Absolutely, do it!
Yes! Yes! Yes! 🙂
I think that would be awesome. I love texture
The ideas are endless!
That is seriously cool. Even with the resin, you can see the texture of the Aqua cast underneath.
Thanks! Yes, I really love that aspect of it!!
I can’t even articulate how satisfying it is when you hit the crystals with mist and the colors really come out. Love the way the cup looks!
Thank you!! I know! I love Brusho 🥰🥰
I love how you are not afraid to experiment! And you share it with us. This tumbler came out amazing, and I'll be honest, I was skeptical.
I cringed all over again when you added the clip of the paint exploding. Still feel really bad that happened to you. 🥺
Thank you!! 😊😊 💙
This is really pretty, reminds me of like a plaster type textured cup in the end. I also remember watching your other channel when the ink blew up... lol It had to look like a Smurf threw up in your craft room. 🤣
Thank you!!! Yes, either a large Smurf or a member of The Blue Man Group 🙄🙄🤣💙💙
I have to say that I laughed a little to hard at the "explosion" my child came to see if I was ok!! I love how you try different things!!
LOL! I definitely went a little over the edge in that moment - it's pretty funny even now to watch that clip. 🙄🤣
I love it. It looks like an exotic water, mountain seen.
Thank you!! Yes, definitely 😁🤩
See you always show interesting new stuff that I then want to go buy lol. Interesting technique and I love how the crystal beads disperse when you spray them.
Thanks so much 😊 Oh, I absolutely LOVE Brusho crystals when activated with water!
I love ❤ that you are willing to share what you experiment with and how it turns out. This is so pretty and watching the brusho under the mist! 👌
Thank you!! I really wasn’t sure if there would be any interest in this particular experiment 😊 It was fun (even tho I had to redo it) 😁😁
@@Luxinda I am always interested in what you do. I love your videos.
@@Mamas-Madhouse-Creations 😊😊🥰
beautiful! it reminds me of ocean floor like what you'd see on google earth, all the way up to crazy sunset... fire in the sky red with cloud texture! and the 504 gives it a mystical feel... it's stunning!
Thank you!! I love that description 🥰🥰
I just love your transparency! You are so entertaining.
Thank you!! 😁😁
Just beautiful! I love the different texture. Gives it some awesome dimension!
Thank you so much!!😊😊
Love the outcome! Great job.
Thanks so much! 😀
these were great & your test tumbler was awesome - just put more Aqua cast on the bottom to cover the hole - Y es please try the black Aqua Cast with gold/silver & the micas - one each lol would love to see this also - love watching all you do - have a good one
Thanks very much!!! I've definitely added more Aqua Cast tumblers to my list 😁
I so so so sooooo love this thank you for sharing
Thank you very much!!! 🥰🥰
Well that turned out gorgeous! I have some Aqua Resin that I may try it the same way. Love your creativity!
Thank you!! Go for it 😊😊
Most interesting tutorial!! Thank you
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it! 😊
I love it!! I'm ordering some immediately! Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you!! Have fun with it!😊😊
You definitely can't go wrong with a little 504. 😊 I've never heard of that product before. If I had to guess it needed to be seal with resin due to the water based aspect of it and probably not food grade. I reminded me of plaster or cake frosting. I thought it was kind of cool once it dried, almost like one of those thirsty stones. Eeek about that paint explosion. On the bright side at least it was blue? 😜🤪. Cool experiment, condolences on the loss of the other cup and your workspace casualties though. 🥰
Thanks very much!! Aqua Cast was just launched a couple months ago, so my guess is there will be more buzz about it as time goes on and folks start to compare it to Jesmonite and other acrylic resin compounds. It definitely needs to be sealed, and since I put epoxy resin on almost everything, this seemed like a good pairing 😁
Great experiment!
Thank you!
It is beautiful.
Thank you!
Love it
Thanks!😊
I love that you share all of these different things with us ❤ I think that more texture would be really cool. Wonder if a pattern could be done using this or would it harden to fast? Love ya!
Thank you!!! Great question! It might doable using one of those textured rollers I see folks using, like to add a pattern to clay. You'd have to time it just right so the Aqua Cast isn't too liquid to hold a pattern and also not too set up. But it might work 😊
Did you do a video on the test cup love those colors.
Thanks!! I did not - in retrospect, I wish I'd at least turned the camera on and captured some of it, but I didn't. What I can tell you is that in the case of the test cup, I had a white spray-painted tumbler that had the same rainbow of Brusho crystals already stuck on it using the "tack-it method". So I had applied Aleene's Tack It glue to the whole white cup, let it dry, then sprinkled on the Brusho crystals. And that cup sat around my studio for months like that. Then I slapped on some Aqua Cast as a test, and the water in the Aqua Cast mixture brought the crystals to life and mixed them around as I rubbed the Aqua Cast all over the cup. So that's why it looks like the layer of AC is colored, because I did sort of mix it with the crystals as I applied it vs putting the AC on first then tapping on the Brusho like I did in this video. I hope that makes some sense.
Really does look like a planet tumbler. Could you add color directly to the mix before adding to the cup?
Thanks!! Yes, you absolutely could -- the Aqua Cast takes colorants beautifully! Anything that is powder (like the Brusho crystals or any mica) or a water-based colorant (acrylic paint, resin dye, liquid resin pigment, etc) can be added before applying this material to the cup or pouring it into a mold of some sort.
I so wanna try this stuff with molds! I've also seen people use jepsom? Like craft concrete? I need to research more, but I'm also wondering if this could help fill in cracks with air dry clay? You've given me so many ideas! Love the cup and all of the art you make.
Thanks! I've heard of gypsum and crafting cast materials like Perfect Cast (I think that's the name?), but I admit I've never tried them on a tumbler to see the difference. I do actually have some Perfect Cast, so this would be a great future video to try and do a comparison. Thank you for this idea!!
I didn’t know you had another channel! What is its name? Wow! That turned out beautiful!❤
Thank you!!! Here’s a link to the other channel:

I love the way it turned out and would like to know how to get the Aqua cast here in the states
Thank you!! Unfortunately, for now, the only way to get it is directly from elichem, and they do charge international shipping to anywhere outside the UK, which is kinda pricey since this is not exactly a lightweight material. www.elichem.co.uk/aqua-cast-water-activated-casting-compound I have no doubt that if this stuff takes off, it will become available over here, but that might be awhile.
@@Luxinda I'd love to try this stuff but I just checked it out and the shipping cost is more than the product 😭 Please let us know if it becomes available in the US 🙏
@@beverlyplemmons1124 I definitely will - I’m hoping that they quickly find a US distributor for it 🤞🤞🤞
This is very interesting Cindy. In some ways I can see this opening up a whole new set of options for us tumbler makers. I think I saw that you made coasters… super cool idea. I’m guessing from a mold? Do you think this aqua cast can be used as a clay replacement such as a gnome tumbler, or is it too moist? Oh so many questions… does it need sealed when dry to not suck up paint if painted? 😊
Thank you!! Great questions! Yes, the coasters were made with silicone molds. I have a video tomorrow (Friday, 10/7) on the other channel, where I make a pretty large bowl with Aqua Cast (also using a mold). I don't think it would be moldable by hand, though, like clay. It sets up very quickly and probably would either be too wet or pretty quickly too stiff to do much molding work with. As for sealing, there are sealers specifically for acrylic resins that are just rubbed on with a cloth, but that's after doing any embellishments. So I think you can go ahead and paint it after it's dry. In fact, I did paint over the one that got splattered with blue, and the cup surface took the paint beautifully. So I think the Aqua Cast needs to be sealed only once you're completely done with it. In the case of this video, I just used epoxy resin as the final sealer, basically.
@@Luxinda thank you so much for taking the time to write back. I really would like to see you experimenting with this more on tumblers and molds…
I love your experiments. Questions: does this make the cup heavy, and can you use various colorants mixed in the acrylic resin?
Thank you!! I actually don't think it makes the cup any heavier than epoxy resin does. Of course, if there ends up being multiple layers of either type of resin, the cup does start to feel heavy. But to me, the finished cup in this video (so 1 layer Aqua Cast + 1 layer epoxy resin) doesn't feel any different than any other 30-oz finished tumbler I've made.
Cool effect! Love the experiment. How much weight does it add to the cup?
Thank you!! Surprisingly, it's no different (at least as far as I can tell by holding and weighing the cup) than any other average 30-oz resin tumbler.
That is soooo cool. Did you epoxy till smooth or left some of its texture? Love the sparkle too😍 stay blessed 🥰
Thank you!! For this video, I put just one layer of epoxy resin on, so the surface of the cup still feels somewhat like the texture of the Aqua Cast, which I love. Or a couple more layers would cover it completely and give a smooth surface.
Wow...just wow. Quick question. How hard was it to sand around the lip of the cup? Did it come off easily?
Thank you!!! Actually pretty easy. Just like with epoxy resin, I was able to pop off the bits of Aqua Cast from the rim with a craft knife , then did a quick sand with a 160 grit sponge. I did all that within the first 24 hours, when it’s still very easy to sand down, and I’m sure it’s still doable for awhile longer. Great question!
Beautiful, TFS. Do you know if there is a US equivalent to this product? Have been wanting to try this for a while. But went onto the website and it would cost over 100 euro to ship to my home in Florida.
Thank you!! Yeah, it's expensive for now, unfortunately! In the meantime, there are still options where you mix powder with a specific amount of liquid activator. There's the actual brand Jesmonite (distributed by: www.madmayker.com/collections in Canada) and there's a similar product sold by Zuri, and they're right in Florida, so shipping might be better: zuri-inc.com/?s=acrylic+resin
You could dry brush.
I considered that for this cup, but I still didn't think I'd get what I wanted. I do intend to do a black Aqua Cast version in a future video and will definitely be dry brushing on that. Thank you for the comment and suggestion!!
Hi what do you spray it with? Is it water and do you use food safety resin? Thanks
Yes, I misted water onto the Aqua Cast with Brusho crystals sprinkled on. And I use KS epoxy resin for the final layer on my tumblers- KS is FDA food-compliant.
Sharon Lindley uses Jesmonite quite a bit, or at least she used to, I haven't been by her channel lately.
Sorry if I missed it, but does the Jesmonite self-level so there are no ridges caused by the application?
Yes! She and Claire at Claire’s Crafty Corner are very fond of Jesmonite. I have no doubt they both will be testing this Aqua Cast soon if they haven’t already.
Oh, about the self-leveling. It depends. In this case, I didn’t want it to because I wanted the texture. But when poured into a mold and tapped on the sides or banged up and down to release bubbles, it definitely levels right out.
@@Luxinda Ah, ok thank you!
What was in the mister?
Just plain ol’ water to activate the Brusho crystals 😊
