    Thanks so much! As I managed to end high school with a 3.9 GPA, I plan to do this for college as well. I will be a freshman, majoring in nursing, and this is my primary goal to accomplish. Like you said, I can't do study groups. I prefer to get things done asap, especially to my convenience.

      same here.. i used to be a 'study group' type of person but i realized some classes have TA's talk to them...since they upperclassman. The students in your class are just like you -blind leading the blind. its more efficient to study by yourself

      If you don't plan on going to grad school, there is literally no point in getting straight A's in college. IF you get above a 3.0 you are fine. I finished with a 3.96 gpa and nobody cares or is even going to ask about it in the real world. Enjoy the college experience.

Was able to relate to your tips and your college experience as well as I also had messed up my first semester in college, but didn't let that bad semester set the story for the rest of my college career as i had worked really hard the following semester and achieved a 4.0 and expecting nothing lower in the future!! 8:24 is very important-as tiny a tip it may seem. I was in General Physics II this spring semester and ended up with a C+. All because from the beginning I had this mindset that it was a lot drier and boring in comparison to General Physics I. Looking back, I didn’t concentrate hard enough in lecture and would slack on our daily problems. I got an A in the lab on the other hand, and I often understood concepts better after covering them in lab, so clearly I must have been capable. This particular tip really resonates with me as I realize a change in my mindset could’ve meant a better grade for me in my Physics class. So to anyone reading this, convince yourself you can do it even in a seemingly dry class. Convince yourself it’s interesting and give it your all. I can speak from experience in other seemingly dry classes that once we put our mind and start grasping concepts, it becomes a whole lot more interesting!

    • @ShyLama
      @ShyLama  6 лет назад +2

      Oh Shrav, you made my day!!! You defiantly got what I was trying to convey in my video. The mindset is everything. As soon as you convince yourself that you are enjoying the class it becomes so much easier. I did it for every class I took and my grades improved dramatically. I wish you all the best in your studies. Thank you for your comment!!!! :)

    Finally, someone who agrees with study groups not being beneficial! I honestly cannot find it beneficial I don't see anyone from my batch is suitable for group study, I'm a medical student and we cannot do our study-table it's already fixed, so I know the classmates aren't suitable for it. Thank you for your tips! you're inspiring indeed for overcoming the language problems! Hi Anastasia, yes, I always read about study groups and how useful they are from the study tips blogs but in reality I think a lot of people just suggesting them without any back though or experience actually being in a study group. hello Shy Lama first of all you sound like such a kind person so cheers to you!! :D I loved the tips you gave and I use them too! I'm 4th year in med already but it's always nice to hear others that succeed and get inspired :)
    what I would add up to these that practically sums up a little what u say in each tip too is that we should try and try focused doing it in our own way :D
    It's a serious commitment and we must get over the "why am I not good enough" habit and just get ourselves devoted to our goal looking optimistacally towards it without being dragged down with whatever or influenced by "how others succeed" .. When you can't be like them it's still ok as long as you are good with yourself and your progress! :)

    I feel like I should be able to take lots of advice from you, because it sounds like we learn in the same ways. If writing down stuff helps you memorize things, I recommend learning American Sign Language. It's my 2nd language, and since I started I've been able to recall people's names, instead of forgetting so often that I finally stop asking!
    I had a 4.0 or above for years, and then my school stopped allowing me to stay and work on homework, and all my grades went down 1-3 letter grades. Then I found out I can stay after school at the library for an hour, but I only stay for about 30 minutes, because I walk home every day with my best friend.
    This year I asked some people in the top ten percent of a class for tips, and they basically all said (1) they're lazy, so they're not the best example, and (2) don't procrastinate. One boy of that group suggested reading the textbook chapters twice, too, minus the notes the second time. I took notes anyway, and I found that watching twice was very beneficial to my understanding.

    I'm not done watching your video (I currently paused it @ 5min in to write this comment), but I wanted to thank you for taking time to make this! listening to your tip about how to read textbooks helped me realize that i had been doing it wrong this entire time.. I would highlight a bunch of stuff, but none of it would sink in because I'd feel satisfied after ONLY going through a chapter once. huge mistake. I know that the method you mentioned would be more efficient, but it sounds so tedious at the same time. I'm already a slow reader, where it would probably take me twice as much time as someone who'd get through a chapter in an hr or less. slowing down my reading even more to take notes at the same time I imagine would prolong my reading of each chapter to 2.5-3hrs or more! 😵😰😕 and imagine if I had to do end of the chapter problems to test my comprehension of the material. I'd more than likely fall asleep LOL, but I suppose I should still try it...

I have had to psych myself out for 1 of my classes just to pass on my 1st semester back in college at the age of 37 yo and I made a 4.0 for that semester. It is all about self discipline.If you are able to manage your time perfectly ,then you are all set up for getting great grades. though getting a 4.0 is not really vital. A 3.30 and above with much of soft skills is what most companies are looking for.

      Thank you for your comments! Don't beat yourself up for not using it this year, it takes time. I did not use it at all in my first year and my grades were terrible. In my second year I started slowly adding some study techniques into my routine and saw a huge improvement right away. I started by reading textbooks twice and doing the practice problems, then I added the self motivation - where I would tell myself that everything that I am studying is VERY interesting and that gave me motivation to keep going :)

    i had literally absent for my economics lectures and tutorials for one term. totally have no clue whats going on from chapter 4 to chapter 9. so what i did was, just before my major exam, i studied myself from 9am to 9pm for 2 days straight
    read and understand
    read and understand
    read and understand
    then do past year papers and understand.
    whatsapp/meet lecturer and friends for clarifications
    tricked myself that i love economics.

    I noticed that studying for longer periods of time (like 7 or 8 hours) everyday during at least 3 or 4 days before the test works really well. I also noticed that handwriting is so important. I received a 3.74 in my first semester of College (I took five classes which was a lot for me, but I still did well), I really couldn't have achieved this GPA without the help of my neat handwriting. I am planning on getting a 4.0, 3.9, or 3.8 GPA this semester. I couldn't study and do as well on tests as I am doing now if I hadn't improved my handwriting over the summer of last year. It really makes a difference!!! Also rewriting important facts five times (and keep repeating) and then highlighting and circling them is key. My current grades in my classes are: A, A, B, etc. (The B in Piano will go up at the end of the year) :)~

    I got a 4.0 in high school and in acquiring a physics associate at a local college. I never had to set aside time to study. It was always enough to just find a way to read any relevant textbook, really, and to get motivated. Like you said.
    Then, after my associate's degree, I got into the mechanical engineering bachelor program at a top school, the Georgia Institute of Technology. HOOOOOOOO DAWGY. OO LAWD. SWEET JESUS. HOLY BUDDHA. Study by itself does not work best. Work works best. If you want to grasp the course material, you do exercises. You follow the Wikipedia trails of important concepts. You find new places to study if you get distracted at your current study locale, including non-site-specific distractions like social media. I do respect that I've implicitly lived by the tips you're giving other people here, but it comes with the disclaimer that some schools have entire dimensions that self-leading study tips just won't cover.
    If it helps the metric any, I finished with a 3.1 in total, and the professors at Tech are researchers in the fields that they teach. They're most often passionate about their subjects, so they're a great resource, though it also means they test for workplace-level understanding like none other. So yeah, if you're thinking Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech, or some other prestigious school, you're in for a lot more than most college graduates can give you advice about.

    I forgot to add a question to the end of my comment, but I was going to ask: is there an estimated amount of time it should take me to read through the textbook each time, and is there an estimated time for how long I should study for in general (like reviewing notes), including how long I should spend reading a chapter each time?
    also, I can't believe those comments were said to you in real life! that sounds so ignorant. I know many and met many people who don't speak English as their first language, but who have a very strong work ethic and who have done well in "hard" classes because they were determined not to waste their opportunity being in university. a lot of them did much better on tests than their American counterparts from what I saw, and it's because they were diligent about studying, and they asked for help and clarification when they didn't understand something. the only thing that worried me a little seeing this was whether they ever gave themselves time to just live life lol

    • @ShyLama
      @ShyLama  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Ste Lo, thank you soooo much for your comments!
      To answer your question, on average it would take me 4 to 5 hours to go through a chapter (that's on easy to medium difficulty level classes), for hard classes like organic chem it would take me sometimes two full days to go through one chapter. I know that it sounds like a lot, but what I found is that if you take time (however long it takes) to understand the chapter and memorize the necessary material from that chapter going forward in the class is much easier because to understand the next chapter you really have to understand the first one (I hope that make sense...lol). What I found is that if I skip one chapter and don't put enough time into studying it, the next chapter is just going to be more confusing and so forth. Also, if you put time to study every chapter in detail from the beginning, when exam time comes all you have to do is a light review of the material, while people that did not study the chapters have to learn the entire class from scratch....
      P.S. While at university, I did have very little personal life :) I did spent majority of my time studying, but that was my choice and I do not regret it. I love studying and I enjoy the process and there is no better time than at university. I do understand that not everyone is like me and it is ok to not study like a maniac....hahaha

    Thank you so much for your tips! Self-convincing has actually been proven to make it easier for your brain to rewire and learn new things, isn't that amazing?
    I'm going to study science just like you did (math, biology and chemistry). I basically don't have any knowledge as I didn't take any science classes in high school because they were optional (very dumb thing of me to do, I know). Do you think I can make it anyway? The level is just slightly more challenging than high school, but I have to learn everything at a much faster pace. What do you think?

    • @ShyLama
      @ShyLama  8 лет назад +2

      Hello youandme.vegan! Thank you for your comment. You absolutely can make it. It might take a little more work but there is nothing impossible in science classes :)

    Thanks so much for the video. I can relate so much to you. I'm a freshman Bio major on a premed track, a second language learner, and like to study on my own. I'm struggling in my classes, especially Sciences and Math, so it'd be great if you can be specific with how you study/master the concepts for those subjects. And I'm wondering if you joined any organization your freshman year, and if so how did you manage your time? Lastly, I'd love to learn how you spend your time as a pre med student, like prepping for MCAT, getting help from mentors, community services or any pre med related activity in general. Thank you!

    I think the GPA also depends on your program. It is far more difficult to get a 4.0 in life sciences and impossible to get a 4.0 in engineering!

    • @ShyLama
      @ShyLama  8 лет назад

      Hi Nicole, you are right that it is much harder to get a 4.0 GPA in some courses than others; but I also think that it depends on the person's natural predisposition towards certain subjects. For example I always enjoyed organic chemistry, it came natural to me, so studying for it was enjoyable. In the biology program advanced organic chem was considered to be one of the harder classes and a lot of people struggled to even get a "B" in that class; while I thought it was a difficult class I did manage to get an "A". On the other hand, I found classes in social sciences very difficult (especially sociology), while majority students though that it was the easiest class they have ever taken, I spent hours studying for it and in some ways found it much harder than the organic chem.
      As far as engineering goes, it is defiantly a hard program. Studying to be a petroleum geologist I took couple of engineering courses as an elective. The classes were very math heavy but myself and couple of other people did manage to get A's. I can not speak for the entire engineering program, but I do think it is not totally impossible to get 4.0 or close.
      Saying all that, however, GPA is not the most important thing in life, I do believe that enjoying your program and classes is much more valuable then getting good grades :)

    Hello! First ill start by saying thaaaank you so much for the amazing tips it really helped me. I am in my first year and I'm aiming to graduate with 4.0 GPA! One of the issues is like yours, I am not a native speaker, but I'm working hard to learn the language more (where are you from btw (: ), My second MAIN issue is that I still cannot find my studying spot! I choose the library sometimes, my room, public quiet park, etc etc. I just cant seem to find which is more comfortable to study and throwing the sleepiness away :S.
    Sorry for the long comment, Please keep up the good work!

      +Alian Joseph
      Alian, thank you for your comment! It is great that you found at least some of my tips helpful. Do let the fact that you are not a native speaker to discourage you. I promise that the more you study the easier it gets. In my first year at university I barely could put two sentences together, writing an essay was like a torture to me, hahaha. In my fourth year I wrote a thesis that was 300 PAGES long!
      As far as study place, I found that an office at my house was the best place to study. If I felt sleepy I stopped studying and either made myself tea or went for a short walk around the house to wake me up.
      P.S. I am from Canada, where are you from?

    How many hours would you spend for one chapter? It takes way too long for me to outline my chapters.

    • @ShyLama
      @ShyLama  8 лет назад +3

      Thank you for your question! On average it would take me 4 to 5 hours for easy subjects and sometimes up to two full days per chapter for hard/difficulty classes (ex. organic chem and engineering). It sounds like a lot, but as I mentioned in the comment to Ste Lo it is worth putting the time. I do credit a lot of my good grades to reading text book and studying every chapter in detail.
      I seem to get a lot of question about the reading part, so I think I will record another video about how I read the textbook and how long it took for every chapter etc. Stay tuned :)
