From Ventura, the town Yvon made famous to the world. Been driving south on our own Pan-American journey for 2 years as I watch this. Made it as far south as Chaiten so far and followed their steps and surfed the mile long wave in Chicama. Walked over the fishing pier at Cerro Azul but no way would I have rode between the pilings! Hoping to pay my respect to Mr. Tompkins at his final resting place in the next couple of weeks at the Patagonia NP visitor center. Thank you for saving these wild places for the world!
What an absolute gem of a film. Thanks so much for sharing this. It really reminded me of The Endless Summer. The real heros of this film are the guys (or guy?) who filmed it all. Climbing Fitzroy was a remarkable achievement for sure but filming it was far more technical and without drones or helicopters or sherpas this amazing film was created. Hats off to the old skool filmmakers who were doing it before the guy who invented the Gopro was even born. ✌🏼
Recorded in the 60s with style and extraordinary quality. Watched it several times and can’t get bored of it. The cherry on the cake is the custom made 60s psychedelic music. Master piece !
Came across this while listening to a podcast on the story of Patagonia. This is amazingly well made for that time, so inspiring for someone who loves hiking and the outdoors!
Unbelievable. Complete adventure before modern technology. If you miss a meet up point you instead get dropped off at a place where you know they'll pass by on the road... And be willing to wait a week, if needed. Crazy, I remember those days before cell phones.
Thank you for pulling this out of the vaults and sharing! Yvon Chouinard had spoken of this trip but I never knew a film was made! Thank you Yvon, Patagonia, & whoever's idea it was to make this film!
When this video came out a year ago it was my first time watching anything climbing and I was instantly hooked. The next day I started my climbing journey. It all started here… VIVA LOS FUN HOGS
The Dylan “Don’t Look Back” @ 19:50 is so surreal to see. Been a personal mantra of mine for years that has always helped push me past my limits in climbing and life and to see this here and now was truly re-inspiring.
Came across this movie because I'm reading "Eco Barons," by Edward Humes (highly recommend). Chouinard and Tompkins have made the most out of their lives and followed their passions fearlessly. Fantastic film. Kudos to the film makers. 1968 - can you imagine, no GPS or weather satellites or drones. I heard the journey from Cali to Fitzroy took them about 6 months. Epic adventure.
Incredible film. Absolutely inspiring. Thanks so much for uploading during these crazy times indoors! Loved watching the old school ski segments - I've skied a bunch of those volcanoes in Chile and they are some of the coolest features anywhere to ski. And so rad to see the climbing segments - I can't imagine questing off into the unknown sea of granite in Patagonia with no weather forecast and just a rack of pitons. Makes you really appreciate how much easier we have it with cams.
FINALLY - I been looking for this film like a fool for a while, luckily you uploaded the complete film in Patagonia Chile´s account months ago so I watched it there hehe, but no idea why not in your official one. Now I have an excuse to watch it again, anyway, I was already going to. I was going to move from the city to a mountain town before the quarantine and all of this shit happened, so I guess films like these are my medicine.
So nice to see you boys back in the day. Don't know why I hadn't seen it before today. YC - Thanks so much for making it available during these gloomy times.
Does anyone pleeease know what song is used at 25:07? It's so poetic and beautiful and I really want to listen to the full song but I can not shazam it.
This is an audiovisual gem. These 5 friends are heroes and inspiration. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Can someone post this soundtrack? Where can I find this music?
Thanks to Hodinkee's The Grey Nato podcast (Jason Heaton and James Stacey) At the end of their latest show they informed their listeners that this film was available! This is a great film. You all should check out The Grey Nato podcast
Unfortunately there's no chance of getting them. I spent a couple of hours googling all the lyrics, tried searching all the songs on shazam and soundhound, googled the musicians ond the end credits and not a single song title was found anywhere. The next step is sending patagonia an email. I guess it's somewhat of a holy grail.
I searched the musicians. Doug lubahn was a bass guitarist who played with Clear light, The Doors (on 3 albums) and Dreams. With Dreams he plays with Jeff Kent, Bob Mann, also credited in the score. Rick Marotta is more of a session drummer. He has played with many famous people, although in 1968 he was playing with a band called The Riverboat Soul Band. Dreams were published by Crunchy Grenola, the same as the film. From what i have read Doug Lubahn and Jeff Kent wrote & arranged most of their music. I guess the score was made for the film and that's it. A one off, as one would say. The best bet is a release from the owner and publisher of this documentry, i see this being a mission even harder than the climb of Fitz Roy itself. Dreams seem to go into jazz, instead of the psychedelic rock of this soundtrack, but the song: Dreams - 15 Miles to Provo (1970), may be a song they wrote in this period, which is quite sublime
I need the soundtrack for this film - such epic tunes! Could someone share it? A Google search for the lyrics is not yielding results. The end credits have several music sources listed, and it seems I'll have to resort to searching for each one 😄

Legend has it that the only way to find the soundtrack to this is to climb Fitz Roy yourself.
Or Shazam

God bless you!
It is a tax scam, don't be so naive.

Absolutely incredible, thank you for sharing it with us. HUGE props to the filmmakers, simply wow!
I was just wondering who would be insane and awesome enough to film this!

This was the film that drove me to misspend my youth and then some chasing the dream. Thank you Yvon, Doug lito et al.
You’re a bit of a legend yourself, Steve!

Travel, adventure , surfing, skiing and climbing! That was top banana! Wanted to see that film for years! Cheers Patagonia 🤙🏻

Straight from the vaults, thank you Patagonia. A true treat.
Does this actually have anything to do with the brand? Or just the name?
Thank you Patagonia, this is definitely my favorite outdoor film !!
This is up there with Free Solo for me. Absolute lunacy
What a great film to watch...any time, but especially now.

Wow I just stumbled across this, it’s what inspired another good movie 180 South. Love it, RIP Doug Tompkins
What I'd do to live this NOW, let alone all those years ago!!

Extremely cool. Around 27 mins some rly banging cinematography, especially considering the era and the shooting conditions. Great stuff

Is this the film that inspired the film 180 south? That’s one of my favorite films ever. That film inspires me just as this film inspired him.
Thanks to Hodinkee's The Grey Nato podcast (Jason Heaton and James Stacey) At the end of their latest show they informed their listeners that this film was available! This is a great film. You all should check out The Grey Nato podcast
what a sick road trip...ticked all the boxes
True meaning of an adventure
@Patagonia The soundtrack to this film is amazing- yet many of the songs I can’t find. Can y’all release the soundtrack? It’s such a gem.
how amazing was whoever carried the camera and did the filming back in the 1960s. No GoPros then.
Everyone said it already- but dammit man. That’s some good music.
dude, surf looks all time
Everybody make your own journey, travel or work your passion, and just chill, who cares what anyone thinks, do your thing, and get busy while dying.
Love it!
Daily dose of patagonia.
This was amazing
Thank You!👍🏻⛏🏔
very inspiring, thank you!
Absolutely brilliant stuff 👍🤓
16:49 it feels good to be up in a mountain
The On the Road of mountain climbing! I wonder if Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty (Kerouac and Cassidy) went along as well!
Brave mens, pioneers.
CLASSIC!!
Terimakasih banyak, luar biasa film ini... ☕👓🙏🙏

sounds like the song around 49 mins is the "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" by Traffic
I searched the musicians.
