I'd take the cupra because it's a sleeper and nobody expects it. The R has a name for itself and people know what it is. On a rolling start the Cupra is also quicker as you lose the 4wd advantage and the R is over 100kg heavier with drivetrain losses too.

I have a 2017 Golf R in Lapiz Blue. We don't have Seat in the U.S., but this Cupra is a very handsome car indeed. I'd still have the Golf, mind you, solely for the AWD since even a GTI with 220 horse power spends too much of its time spinning it's front wheels... But I'd have definitely cross shopped my R against this Seat if I had the opportunity to.
Not sure the Cupra owner was using launch control correctly. TC off fully (press and hold), gearbox in ‘S’. Foot on brake and wait for Launch Control Activated message on dash. Launch control will not enable on my Cupra 300 in “manual” DSG mode.

Exactly the same car pretty much, only the cupra is about 10 grand cheaper for near enough the same performance. & the golf r doesnt have 310 hp. it's actually 298.
You should add a category to your test; price when new; the Cupra would win that by a good margin. And that’s why it’s actually the winner over the Golf. You get 99.9% of a Golf’s performance, the same interior, and a far more handsome looking car, for a lot less. Given the cost of fuel today, and not to mention the Cupra is better on mpg, the balance can go into the tank, so you’ve got incredible value for money. Also, given that Golf is 4wd, I’d be interested to see what a 2wd GTI’s performance would be. I suspect a lot closer if not worse than the Cupra.
Why do you keep acting like your car is better? The golf has the launch and that’s about it, on track and rolling the seat is faster every single time.
Bit loaded to the Golf R i think , Cupra looks better will be more fun and on the move 30-70 ect probably quicker. I have a M135i N55 and see Golf Rs everywhere but when i see a Cupra its like oh look a Cupra .... mmm nice.

Really interested in the cupra's. I'll be changing my 2011 BMW 325d in 2 years ish and WAS looking at diesel, so 330d naturally for fuel consumption. I do quite a lot of miles, over 10k a year but tbh when you're driving 3.0 diesels fuel economy is less of a factor. And I wouldn't drive a 2.0 diesel because they're way too slow, I'm 23, cant be driving a car that slow yet 😅 I'm getting on average 42-44mpg when driving without any regard for fuel economy. Can get close to 50mpg on a really long run sat at the speed limit (not my usual 80) but that's boring and don't do it often. Also because mine is 8 years old and 80k miles I fill up with premium diesel which is a lot more than even premium petrol, so the price difference comes right down. I also dont want the dpf blocking up driving slow and economically so I drive it a bit harder. So really moving to a cupra, getting anywhere above 30mpg and filling up 50/50 with normal and premium fuel which is what I do on my motorcycle there wont be that much in it I dont think. Plus I can actually drive a decent quick car, win win really. Although by the time I'm looking at changing cars the 4x4 cupra might have dropped a few grand to my budget😎 now THAT I like

Seat is a better looking car, that R looks like a tired booger.
Back of the cupra is so ugly, golf r all the way better class 4 wheel drive quicker car
Absolutely, loving cupra guys I was so loved golf before but now huge fan of seat Leon what a good suspension look at design and how it manufactured.
You need to get my 300 cupra on the channel
CUPRA FTW! LOVE THAT CAR
Thanks for letting me know to get the 2018 model! Much love
Turned off when you said “been a minute”.
Why do you keep acting like your car is better? The golf has the launch and that’s about it, on track and rolling the seat is faster every single time.
Does anyone know if the cupras now have ambient lighting in the back passengers doors now or is it just the front ones?
No taking into account the price?
my 300 sounds so much better than the new 290, even before the res delete, although the 2nd gen digital cockpit is nice than the 1st gen :(
Change your midpipe on the Cupra put a resonator delete 130 quid makes all the difference!
Car looks sick in that colour! But please get the door sills done as well 😭
Bit loaded to the Golf R i think , Cupra looks better will be more fun and on the move 30-70 ect probably quicker. I have a M135i N55 and see Golf Rs everywhere but when i see a Cupra its like oh look a Cupra .... mmm nice.
Great vid Luke.. it's crazy how much the 4drive makes a difference between the fwd and 4drive cupra st... It's 4.9secs.. be great if u could review one...
I have a cupra 300 and it sounds way better than this even on standstill no mods.
Opf cars are actually better programmed to pop and bang cause injecting fuel into the exhaust and making it pop cleans the opf. The owner sis not have his car in cupra mode.
How many miles does the Golf have compared to the Cupra ?
Cupra probably not even broken in.
The Cupra will be my next car
Do Golf R vs Scirocco R
You presume they are both 2.0ltr turbos? They are basically the same cars. Increase your basic car knowledge FFS.
Evren Sokmener shadaaaaap
Ones front wheel drive and a lot lighter. Get your facts right before you give people shit
@@th3chrisstott read my original comment.
@@hampshirephoto really?
Why did the cupra not pop? They do pop mine popps 🙄
Another comment suggested had it in comfort mode
Well he definitely didn’t have it in cupra 😂
Is that golf standard?
Compare Golf R Variant vs Cupra ST 4drive
What decibel meter do you use
now this is a much better head2head! in a rolling race think 290 would of won
0:25 keep pressing the time on my comment, thank me later

This is the best video I ve seen in a long time, and I ve seen a lot, vrey relevant ! Keep going because you do exactly what pepople want to see/know !
Better Golf ?? Its moss expensive 50%.. I dont think the same. The track say another thing.
Nice video, and nice cars! The 2019 Cupra 290 does pop on the overrun though: ruclips.net/video/waFljq7YE8Q/видео.html
Maybe not as loud as the Golf R, but there's definitely pops.
Always find these comparison videos bizarre
Don’t watch them then
@@hampshirephoto always biased towards your car.
It’s as if you trying to justify your purchase if that’s the case what a sad little geek of a boy
Nothing beats good old NA engines with a lot of capacity in terms of pure sound. Everything is fake these days 🥵
Unicate Inc. turbos has the best sound/power
Electric Tesla beats your shitbox na engine
love hot hatch;.... i have MK7 vw golf GTi with 19 inch wheels
That golf isnt standard so no really a good review..
7:10 looks like dad and his son lmao
Curbed his wheel after 2 months 😭
Easily done with low profile tyres a pot hole can even kerb your wheel
I'd have the cupra if it was a mk2
The Cupra is more quiet at high rpm than a Porsche 997 in indle 😂
Unicate Inc. PPF filter ruins everything bro
jamie brassett Yea I agree. It can possibly replace a muffler because of its ability to decrease the sound level but the startup sound gets unfortunately much weaker
@@unicateinc ive got the cupra 290, get a backbox delete and then it sounds perfect
Scar And drives like nothing else
The lad who owns the cupra is a bit clueless imo...
cupra 4k cheaper?
Really interested in the cupra's. I'll be changing my 2011 BMW 325d in 2 years ish and WAS looking at diesel, so 330d naturally for fuel consumption. I do quite a lot of miles, over 10k a year but tbh when you're driving 3.0 diesels fuel economy is less of a factor. And I wouldn't drive a 2.0 diesel because they're way too slow, I'm 23, cant be driving a car that slow yet 😅
I'm getting on average 42-44mpg when driving without any regard for fuel economy.
Although by the time I'm looking at changing cars the 4x4 cupra might have dropped a few grand to my budget😎 now THAT I like
Checking the exhaust sounds again when the golf r has been modified? Compare it to a cupra with a exhaust mod? Golf R are shite dull cars - fact.
Scirocco r vs golf r
Do a roll
Race se what happens then
Shame is every man and his dog got a golf r these days. Don’t see many cupra’s around.
Golf R is significantly heavier
35.1mpg?!? How the hell?!? I can’t even get to 25mpg. He must be a boring driver. No offence
