Woke up this morning son missed the bus to discover my shifter would not go into gear. Watched your video and maygivered a fix with plastic tubing and curtain rod hanging hard ware for the retaining pin. Worked like a boss will get the more secure clip you suggested today thank you for this.

Thanx for this vid. The gift that keeps on giving. Been fighting w/ this issue for 3 weeks. Shaved off the edges of the Dorman bushing everyone buys that doesn't stay on. Used that as the inner tubing. Then put the retainer clip around the neck of the shifter. Can't pull it off if I wanted to!!

Thanks for the info!!! I thought I was going to be stranded in the parking lot outside the movie theater. The vid helped me identify what and where. I “Mygivered” it, took the elastic off my mask, tied the two pieces together and off we go until i get home for a permanent fix

TY my sister called me she was stuck at a park with her kids because the shift lever wouldnt put car into drive or reverse she called a tow company to pickup the car and called me to drive her 45 minutes to her home. I watched your video before heading out to pick her up saved me and hour and a half drive and her about $200 as we canceled the tow truck and probably about $100-200 for someone to diagnose the issue. Her boyfriend insisted in giving me $20 and diner for my troubles I declined but he insisted. Thanks!!!

I did this today. They didn’t have the crimp retainer but I used a different type for $1.58 and I had the 3/8 plastic tubing. Cut 3/16 off which I hollowed out with a 5/16 drill bit and fit like a glove. I love RUclips. Thanks so much. Now I got a spare kit in the car so I won’t be stranded if it happens again. I might order the crimp retainer if it does pop off but for now, I’m going with it.

Man you're awesome, i was literally using my truck to drop off uber eats today and the link bushing stopped at reverse when going uphill. needless to say i still had to get it towed because i was nowhere near home and on a hill so wasnt getting under it there. I did find the link and it looked just like you said disconnected and free floating. gonna do this repair like you did in the vid and keep some spare parts for that same setup in the truck at all times. Thanks a lot.

Yup that's why I'm here. LOL. I have a 2008 EXT. Went to drop some stuff off at UPS. I get home and pull in my driveway, put it in park and the moment it was passing R the shifter became very easy to move and bang....truck stuck in reverse. Had to put the parking brake on to prevent it from moving. I am amazed it happened just as I pull in my driveway. It could have happened while I was parked at UPS. And yes the bushing is all busted and half of it is gone. I was able to manually put it in park so I could at least start the truck and move it if needed.

This happened to us today at the park. Our whole family was there and the shifter went out. Looked it up right there in the parking lot, found this video and crawled under the truck. Sure enough it was hanging there. Placed it back in place and added a zip tie to get us home. Awesome video, saved me from having a tow truck come out. Will make this repair in the morning. THANK YOU.

Thank you again for the info it literally cost me $2.60, 81cents for the clip and $1.57 for the tubing and tax. plus the 10 minutes , The only thing I did different than you was turn the clip so the top notch is pointing to the high spot on the shifter cable in the unlikely event if it was to ever soften up and move wont fall off. once it's pinched it not goin anywhere. all i used was the drill and my vampire pliers needle nose with the cutter.

Do you think I have the same issue? Drove my 09 escalade for 10 years with no issues. Today I drive it to my friends and then when I went to put it in reverse to back in the shifter just glides freely through every gear. It won’t “click” or lock into any gear. The truck says it’s in neutral and is is but I can’t select park, reverse, neutral or any drive gear with the vehicle running.
When I turn the vehicle off the shifter is now locked “like it should be” and I can’t move it. You think I have the broken bushing/cable?
    Thanks!!

Cables are two pieces, the get home fix is a plastic bottle cap. Drill a 7/32" hole and cut two slots outward from that hole. Press the cap on and it will retain your shift cable to get you home

How’s that tubing holding up in substitute of a bushing? I like your idea for the locking clip on the end. I was thinking it needed exactly that to keep it from slipping off even if the bushing where to wear out.

It’s not always the bushing I see a lot of cables that snag up you can buy bushings Dorman sells them at your local parts store or make your own bushing you could use rubber hose gas line 1/4 your cable looks like pretty well any other one

2013 Tahoe 4wd SSV worked with Dorman #14073 / Napa # NOE 81952431. The approach he is doing here is replicated in these kits and took about 2 mins to put on. The retainer he is using is beefier though.

Will not work on 07 Escalade without modifying the bushing and finding a different retainer clip. In other words don't buy this kit if you have an 07 Escalade.

Yes, the cable is quite reasonably priced at the dealer, however as I stated when this happened, GM was on strike and no one had a cable nor could they tell me when I could expect to receive one.

Or maybe, just maybe pay attention to the info I gave in the video. GM was on strike at the time and no cables were available at the dealer or anywhere else. This was the only fix at the time. But thanks for your wisdom.
