And the Pokemon this kid uses? A bug-eyed, moronic looking fish flopping on the ground. Trainers laugh as they easily crush this poor kid's dreams of becoming a Pokemon master, but then HE. JUST. KEEPS. COMING. And each time, his little Magikarp gets a wee bit closer to victory. Terror begins to sink in throughout Canto as his goldfish slowly starts stomping through Pokemon it has no business facing. You might beat him once; you might beat him a hundred times, but he'll keep coming closer and closer. Eventually it becomes apparent that this 11-year-old who got kicked out of his house so a Mr. Mime could rail his mom has a level of angst that is unparalleled. No one is safe. It was interesting. To start off about as powerful as you can with Dragon Rage and ending up with over 120 resets, struggling to knock out Pokemon was definitely different. I'm just ready to push out extra videos starting next week.
Honestly the time and resets may not be impressive by tier list standards but I still think this was a fantastic run. I was really worried you wouldn't make it but you pulled through in the end! Well done! Also, this rom is GORGEOUS!
It makes perfect sense to not include blackout grinding in a reset-counter when you don't reset. Resetting is done when you lose a fight and want to not lose time and thus try again for better luck/mitigate bad luck, and a reset counter can counteract a bit the fact that a pokémon might get a way better time than it should have because of good luck. If you take the time to blackout grind again and again, you're not circumventing ingame time, the thing the reset counter is supposed to counteract a bit, so it makes no sense to have it count.
Well said and my thoughts exactly. The Smeargle race and the video I did on it says the same sentiment. It’s a bit of a divide in the overall channels but blacking out is strategic and you pay the price of game time to progress. It’s emphatically not a reset but Scott has his counter set up to go up every time your starter faints. Call it a ‘faint counter’ in that situation, imo.

Splash? no. Gonna go for Flail, which magikarp learns in gen 3 iirc. (Could have been an idea to do the run at that gen, and switch splash for flail at lvl 30
Maybe in the future! I’m trying to learn Gen 2 well atm and pump out some crystal content in January so Gen 3 will have to wait a bit haha. Working on some good things!
Yea, later gens. This was more in line of what you could technically use in a Gen 1 game with the Gen 1 and 2 events. I thought I covered it in the intro, haha.
With the lower video performance, the high resets, and what a general slog it was, it's safe to say I'll never do another Magikarp playthrough for the rest of my life.
Appreciate that. I thought so too. The video didn't do well but it was fun to do. I think Scott is doing the same concept but I'm sure his will get a million views haha. Being the little man is rough!
Because Abra wasn't enough pain for you, you decided to do a Magikarp run. I did find it rather amusing that the part of the game where Abra becomes easy with psychic is where the run becomes an absolute chore with Magikarp. Too bad the university pokemon is such a dummy that can't learn any TM moves or HM Surf.
Nice thing about gen 1 is you could level max, then get yourself badge boosted to insane levels. I don't know how you will use the boosts though because dragon rage doesn't care lol
Hello, you must be new here. I do a lot of cross gen runs. It's kind of my thing but I do prefer that if I'm spending my time making new sprites/moves/etc. that it be a good run and not some insufferably bad Pokemon just in some desperate attempt to get views lmao.
I use all of them, at level 88. It's a slow leveling group, bad run that needs level 100. I'm saving them to skip the worst levels. It's not like a regular run where 2-3 rare candies can set you up for the rest of the game lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 oh I mean like just giving yourself like 99. You can't really tier these so no point in really grinding it. Even then at 4x it's not like really doing it anyways since you can do the math. Even so it's not really an accurate representation of doing it in real time. Which you'd never do unless you just hate life.
I just think it’s against the spirit. Even with the grinding, I’ve had faster runs. It only took like 20 minutes or less to do the grinding and that’s a fraction of what it takes to make a video.
"The loneliest people are the kindest" "The saddest people is the brightest" "The broken people are the wisest" They do this because they don't want other people to suffer the same thing. Plz someone else wrote this comment, I just wanna speed it, keep spreading it plz, thnx.

Poor magikarp. That slow level up group really kills some times. I know the stats are supposed to make up for it with Gyarados, but the fish ain’t him. At least give my man like 30 attack and special lol
Yea, fun little gimmicky run but one time was enough lmao.
Wondering if it might be a good call to just white out on some gym trainers for exp, maybe Koga’s gym?
I'll let you get a little further into the video, haha.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ;)
great video. I love this redesign/graphic for gen 1!
Thanks! It's just a color patch. Sprites and everything are still true to the original!
One of the most beautiful videos good job man keep the good work
Thanks man. It’s my worst performing video in 2 1/2 months sadly lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 nah man u did good trust me it's not easy and u can do better like i told u one day you gonna be best pokemon chanale
Gotta make some progress though lol.
21:54 best part
Imagine if it learned hydro pump like it does in other gens
It would be...marginally better lol. Subpar accuracy, 5 power points. I don't think I even use Bubble effectively until like 80% of the game is over.
Whoa, you mean Magikarp eventually learns hydro pump?!
Gen 5..ish I think.
@@adventureoflinkmk2 sword and shield it can learn it by TR
Okay man! Liking the new into/presentation/arts
Thanks! Yea the overlay has been tweaked a lot but the intro is more of a throwback to how I used to do it.
Splashy dragon rage BOI!
Anyone remember that Magikarp Jump mobile game they did?
Yea, I believe that had unique colors and everything.
Matt, you should have known that dragon rage just doesn't cut it in the mid game. Splash. Even buffing Magikarp with bubblebeam and aurora beam for coverage and power will still take a long time to beat the late game. Also buffing Caterpie, Weedle and the second stages with bug bite and sludge with the poison bugs will still have them struggling!
It's Magikarp. Of course it's going to be a struggle. Dragon Rage falls off before you even leave Cerulean.
WHAT A FUCKING LEGEND
Reminds me of that speedrun RUclipsr. ‘You absolute legends’, haha.
Using PKHex you can import any event Pokemon legally. So they are even Home compatible. 😅
No need, I already got live updating software!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that's actually awesome. That's made me even happier that I'm a subscriber.
Keep Tombstoner-ing them brother.
Will do. Can't decide if Gen 2 will be Cianwood, brother or Chuck, brother.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think the former has a nice ring to it.
Though Chuck is a fighting pun so that could work too.
Hehe nice! I’m ready for the Gyarados whenever you are.
I’m sure we’ll get there one day. This video performed so bad it might be a few years
Alas
Bro where did the Tombstoner joke originally come from? Would you believe me that tombstoner made me a fan of you
I think I talked about it in my first/second video and the Bellsprout video I just said it. It’s like Macho Man. I also have no reason to not believe you lmao.
Splash?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 We'll be waiting with excitement! :D
Magikarp can also learn hydro pump and bounce via other events
Yea, later gens. This was more in line of what you could technically use in a Gen 1 game with the Gen 1 and 2 events. I thought I covered it in the intro, haha.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 if You Ever do it again in the future,You could use that
Magikarp with max theoretical power
With the lower video performance, the high resets, and what a general slog it was, it's safe to say I'll never do another Magikarp playthrough for the rest of my life.
Splish splash! Cool concept video!
It would have helped but with the last ranked special, I bet it would still be kind of bad.
Its that weak pos rydon again going down to some blown bubbles of a magikarp
Rhydon did pretty well it it’s run!
Ok, hear me out, not a tangela run. But a tangrowth run? =D
I heard a lot about Tangrowth but sadly I will have to do Tangela eventually lol.
Your content always is 10/10 but today it’s extra TEN
Figured I'd start off a packed month with a banger.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 10/10 bop
We'll see if others like it!
Hey Matt, So this is the last run with triple digit reset counters?
Yep and probably the last in general lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 well you beat the game with Magikarp though so it's possible. With a university magikarp...
Finally some competition for Mewtwo.
Competition for my lowest viewed video lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'll have to watch it twice then!
At this point probably 3k more times to be in line with the better viewed ones haha.
also what program do you use to show the current's pokemin stats + your pp?
Watch a newer video, I talk about it in an unlisted video linked in those. It’s more of code and what not and not some automatic program though.
Dragon Rage Magikarp tried its best XD
Triple digit resets had me wanting to scrap it lmao.
Splash, which this boi probably won’t ever have to use…right?
Lol, what use would splash have even in a normal playthrough?
Nice thing about gen 1 is you could level max, then get yourself badge boosted to insane levels. I don't know how you will use the boosts though because dragon rage doesn't care lol
I do at the end a little bit and mention that.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just got to that part. It was pretty funny to see a Magikarp have like 285 special lol. At least you got to kick Bruno's ass lol
Yea, but it's Bruno. Not much more to say than that lol.
This is going to be a wild ride
I have a feeling this run will be rage inducing
A slow descent into rage for sure.
Or fly as a substitute for bounce
What if you ported pokemon with a rom hack? Sunkern ftw.
Hello, you must be new here. I do a lot of cross gen runs. It's kind of my thing but I do prefer that if I'm spending my time making new sprites/moves/etc. that it be a good run and not some insufferably bad Pokemon just in some desperate attempt to get views lmao.
SPLASH, BROTHER!
Appreciate that, brother.
Lil dragon fish go splish splash
Just the rage part, haha.
The emperor of all magikarps!
I hope Prof can win at level 99. Then you can evolve it with its last level.
Uh oh, haha. I didn’t karpe diem.
man magikarp sucks fr lol. I admire your dedication!
I've done Abra and Ditto. Nothing else is too bad in comparison lol.
This is very interesting
I thought so too. The way it played out is unlike anything else I've done lol. At least I can say I've mastered Dragon Rage.
Splashing almost 8 mins in :3
That's what I like to hear!
Nice video I like the idea of using some distribution mons, makes me wanna see more mons that struggle with Brock lol
You want to see more mons struggle on Brock? I got at least one for this month but January we have a huge struggle lol.

Hi this comment is to help you with your RUclips algorithm have a good day
I think this was the push I needed!
Because in red and blue they use the moves they learn 🤓
Smh.
Why not consider using rare candy its acceptable in nuzlocke but especially since stuff like this can't really be tiered
