Rattata getting Bodyslam but somehow Pidgeot and Fearow not getting it is just insane. And normal types get the weirdest coverage moves, but nothing imo will beat surfing Rhydon for me.
I’m amazed how well you did with rattata. I was thinking it would be either an one hit win or loss. I wonder how an alolan rattata would do. Enjoy your trip!
I agree with you on the dude being moved to mt. moon. It's just super weird that the otherwise super freely explorable game railroads you so hard in the beginning vs. Brock, with zero TMs, very few trainers and weak pokémon. Imo, you should even have access to the first floor of mt. moon (maybe raise Brock's levels a bit?) and have a Rocket block the ladder to continue. A Rocket blocking stuff seems more thematic than that one random guy in the game (later on, you have way more roadblockers, but that guy imo stands out in Kanto) and this way, you'd also have access to both the water gun and mega punch TMs, which both would help and reward exploration instead of just grinding and hitting your head against a wall. That way, imo water gun's TM also actually becomes somewhat more valuable because you can use it for longer instead of picking it up in Mt. Moon and immediately replacing it with Bubble Beam in the next gym. Ofc yes, 2/3 starters curbstomp Brock without issue at all, but still, in case you want to use some other strategy than that.
I don't totally agree with water gun access but most Pokemon that learn it do already have some sort of water move. I think at bare minimum the extra access to like 5-6 trainers and higher level grass before Mt. Moon would be a step in the right direction. I know the game isn't balanced around solo running but it would be cool if it was. I would shit my pants if Gamefreak released these games on switch with a solo mode but I have a better chance of walking outside and finding 8 million dollars in an abandoned Ferrari.
Solid run for the tiny rat. A bit confusing to see Rattata Bubblebeam, Blizzard and Thunderbolt his way through some major battles but thats the power of normal type Pokemon movepools on gen 1.
As much as I've been enjoying the Alolan summer, videos like this are why I watch poketubers. The sleepers, the ones that are better than they have any right to be (or worse, that's fun too)! Any way, enjoy your time out of country and thanks for the content.
Got another week of work to finish and a video to wrap up along with a couple of streams and then I’m officially breaking lol. Yea the regular gen 1 content is my favorite too and there’s no way to please everyone so I sprinkle in as much variety as I can.
It’s speed was definitely solid but I was surprised it held its own that well with a 218 base stat total. It took a solid 4 runs to get this one feeling good.
Great job on this one, Matt! You’ve really gotten me curious how a Raticate would do. I tried to run some damage calculations and thought that maybe it could get by Brock before it even gets Hyper Fang in Yellow (like level 11 or 12), but I don’t think it could do so in Red. 😅 Still though, level 14 isn’t too bad and I’m curious which version would reign supreme.
I was going to bring up the ice beam thing too, which is weird. I also think it's weird they have the same level up learnset and Raticate doesn't start with Quick Attack or Hyper Fang. Those changes would probably make it a lot better but I do think it's an easy sub 3 hour run. It might be better than Starmie, lol. That's my new favorite pokemon to pick on because it triggers some people in streams.
For a brief moment I thought this would be easy due to F.E.A.R. strats only to snap back to reality and realizing no hold items or abilities in gen one.
People tell me that but both Raichu and Pikachu have had easier runs in Yellow. Brock adds more time to their runs in Red than Giovanni does in Yellow.
Before watching I think rattata is gunna be awful but you'll somehow make it work amazingly and make it look easy. Keep up the great work matt and cant wait to see how this one turns out!

Rattata. Every time I get one, I never keep it or its evolution for the full game. Still, I like the little ratty. Hyper Fang is crazy good when you get it, and Rattata makes for a good glass cannon. With surprisingly good move coverage, I'm hoping it wasn't too big a chore to play it.
It was pretty solid. Better than like half the runs I've done to this point but I guess the normal progression is to dump the first few route Pokemon like Butterfree, Raticate, etc. The base stats are just lower to compete with the better mons.
It has the same level up learnset which is weird. So the start would be similar but increased stats and the fact it gets ice beam for some reason make me think it could be solid. At least sub 3.

I’ve had people talk about maximum battles or whatever and it’s just not a great concept. It extends the run hours past it’s welcome and there’s no challenge to it. It doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy.
i used a Ratticate (called Fatticate) in yellow as my normal filler till i got Snorlax, yeah i ended up keeping him, he was surprisingly good for a general play through, Ratticates 50 special is bad but its actually okay enough in gen 1, water gun and then bubble beam allowed me to deal with rock/ground types till i got my Starmie :)
Watch the video! It's actually pretty good! It's about a C grade, which is much higher than you'd expect with something with it's stats and no crazy boosting move like Swords Dance. I was proud of this little guy.
Definitely. The easier Brock split goes a long way because you'd need to grind either way no matter what version and the extra 20-30 minutes you'd spend in the early game would just be hard to overcome.
Rattata's movepool enabled it to get a good time, surprisingly even able to beat Scyther and it gets Swords dance. Or does that make Scyther a weak final evolution, especially in Gen 1 with bad stab moves for Scyther?
I put together a good route for Scyther but swords dance doesn't mean much with no STAB moves, no body slam, no coverage, or anything of the sort. Scyther is just a below average single stage Pokemon in terms of gen 1 and the fact it's lower than a 218 base stat total route 1 rodent is all you need to know lmao.

I guess that I'm in the minority who actually prefers the cross-gen stuff. I suppose there is a sort of underdog/darkhorse factor to the first-form pokémon runs, but I find them to often be quite samey, frankly. Such runs typically involve just bruteforcing the game at a high level-especially if the pokémon has a bad movepool like Magicarp. The cross-gen stuff, on the other hand, feels more fresh and unique with your special coding adding to the experience.
I feel the opposite for the most part. Most cross gen runs come down to the same TMs with roughly equal times whereas a lot of these runs just scrape by with what they got with really varied times. The last yellow run was 3 hours even, this one was 3h 37 m, and recent streams have been in the 4h 19m and 5h 25m range. Regardless of interest or preference, generic/non popular cross gen runs just don’t pull a lot of views for the effort required.
Yea, it will have the same start. For some reason, they have the same level up set. If it started with Hyper Fang or something we could have a special one on our hands but I'll have to just see it when I get to it.
Maybe. I often forego ice beam to get blizzard later to save some time. It does have 50 special and it might allow Erika earlier but I'm a long way off from looking deep at it. I'm trying to do 2 streams, wrap up work, release a video, then leave for a bit and not think about Pokemon for a bit haha.

Great reasoning. Usually you are a little over the time but despite all those reasonings you still gave it a top 4ish pre-evolved rank in what would be a high C rank. It's a little slower than that.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just overestimated the ability for rattata to grind quickly because I saw stab hyper fang n body slam and was like grinding easy run HARD
Pre-run: going to be rough but doable if you get through Agatha. Being able to BoltBeam (Ice and Bubble), Dig, and Body Slam is a broader moveset than most mons in Gen1.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Post-Run commentary: better than I expected. Somehow I noted the value of the movepool but overlooked how a solid Speed stat and Dig solves the Agatha problem. That's what I get for being too excited to post. Regardless, nice run out of Joey's Ace. Raticate should be legitimately solid if you ever run it, for all the reasons you stated (basically Rattata but better). Well Done!
I don't understand. You repeat multiple times that the stats are too low, and the damage ranges are too bad, making most of your fights a struggle. But you're just one-shotting everything as you speak. Why doesn't your script match up with the gameplay footage?
Those one shots take grinding and extra levels. The stats are free to look at, if you think 218 base stat total isn’t low then I don’t know what to tell you. Even early I need to be 28 for Misty but being specific always helps. Damage isn’t Rattata’s problem, it’s defensive stats is what makes it difficult. I praise it’s attack early with Hyper Fang and it just gets better with dig and body slam!

Here to drink sodie pop, (politely) demand my shoutout and help boost engagement "just a tiny bit!" Praise Lord Helix and the Algorithm! And if all else fails, Tombstoner, brother!!!
I'm trying to get through patreons/members for a while now. You might have 3 months if I can even remember at that time lol.
Im becoming too slow
Just like what i think this rat will do
Will perform D tier level of time
Somewhere around there.
Nibbler! Perfect name for him
Top tier for sure.
You got pretty unlucky this run. Nice job with the optimizations though. Enjoy ur vacay!
I'm not sure I'd say unlucky reflecting back but rather I came really close to getting lucky and having a very low reset run.
I think you might be able to get sub-3:00 on Raticate. Maybe.
Yea, it will have the same start. For some reason, they have the same level up set. If it started with Hyper Fang or something we could have a special one on our hands but I'll have to just see it when I get to it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I think access to Ice Beam is cool even though the special is trash. I wonder if it'll come in handy?
Raticate in crystal next
Rattata is great
It was alright. Great is a stretch.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ratigreat
I'd like to see rattata manage within 3 hours and
Could really see a lot of rng fights with the 90 acc
I had a good run but no way a 218 base stat total Pokémon is getting a sub 3 hour time lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I can hope though :D. Maybe the Raticate run can restore the honour of the name Rattata
I thought this one did a great job outperforming expectations. If anything, this run puts high expectations on that run.
TODAY on legendary predictions brought to you by TM 28 TOMBSTONER BROTHER
Level 74 time 3 hours 10 minutes
Bad defenses, the fact its stats wont do well vs the league and EVERYONE EXCEPT AGATHA potentially being a problem because bruno is one hi jump kick or submission away from raticide besides lance n champion yellow
Brock, erika Giovanni n especially koga are your problems before league
Great reasoning. Usually you are a little over the time but despite all those reasonings you still gave it a top 4ish pre-evolved rank in what would be a high C rank. It's a little slower than that.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I just overestimated the ability for rattata to grind quickly because I saw stab hyper fang n body slam and was like grinding easy run HARD
Lets go!
Is this even possible
Easily, lol. There's only a few impossible runs because of only normal damage.
#TombstonerBrother
#RatPower
Appreciate that!
Pre-run: going to be rough but doable if you get through Agatha. Being able to BoltBeam (Ice and Bubble), Dig, and Body Slam is a broader moveset than most mons in Gen1.
Fast Pokemon with Dig? Sounds like an easy Agatha battle to me!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I realized that after I posted it, but I did not know if it would be able to do that at a low(ish) level without Badge Boosting.
Easily. Yellow Agatha feels easier to me and they have average defense.
Well Done!
Gotta play them all eventually!
😊
Nice
Noice.
Rat
rule34 Exeggcute run when?
I don’t know what that is.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 neither do I, but I know how much you love doing runs with that pokemon ^_^
Glm!!!
