►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

The Refrigerator Bird was absolutely my favorite legendary out of Gen 1, so it makes me smile to have this as a winter run!
Yea it was really good. Makes me excited to see what Mewtwo can finally do but I might save it a while longer.
My guess before seeing the video: Arcticuno will be the fastest bird. By far. Because Ice Beam.
Excellent guess. Beyond that, I think the results are surprising.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 wow, I will also mention Jrose’s mewtwo video, would make sense that more experience optimizing runs will bring mewtwo’s time down. Surprised that Articuno did as well, I suppose that luck on Lorelei was in your favor, and Agatha almost got you. Well played. Tight and engaging video.
I made a mistake on Agatha. Blizzard or Ice beam since it’s a one turn move would have made it comfortable but I wasting fly turns, I missed one, and I allowed toxic to tick like 4 times.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Thank you for your compliment, awesome run, it was a blast to watch. To be honest... yeah, I did not expect it to outperform Mewtwo - those results are indeed surprising even though I expected Articuno to do amazing.
Speaking of Mewtwo: Its Psychic isn't the strongest special move in gen 1 without Amnesia / any boosts. Arcticuno's Blizzard is (huh okay I guess Moltres' Fire Blast is also as strong as Articuno's Blizzard, but let's be real here ❄️ > 🔥).
Before watching, I’m worried that peck is going to be a huge setback and make the Brock split insurmountable. Drill peck and early thunderbolt makes Zapdos the fastest bird. Just a guess.
Never mind, we start with ice beam. Ez pz
Maximizing your ass beam using is the key to this run indeed
For sure. I know how to maximize that.
Ass Blasters lol
Moltres always felt like an afterthought for the trio. It was found extremely late game and as you said weak move set and TM learn set. Articuno was my favorite design and Zapados is a beast in G1
Articuno is definitely clean. I like the spikes on Zapdos as well. As far as Moltres, we’ll Ho-oh was in the first anime episode and is just a better version lmao.
Articuno is a true monster and a personal favorite. 😊 Honestly, the Ice type is not even much of a defensive liability in games with so few Rock, Fire, or Fighting attacks from NPCs. Thanks for the vid!
In gen 1, it's pretty neutral and solid. It's not until fire starts to resist it and steel becomes a thing where it goes downhill dramatically.
Zero resets is extremely impressive, well done 👏
Although you were so close to losing at several points, it's amazing you managed this without ever losing a battle
Lorelei in particular was always going to be extremely tough but Rival 5 and Agatha were no joke either
Yea I blundered Agatha. Fly while toxic was a bad call since blizzard or ice beam would have done more without leaving me open to multiple toxic ticks.
ice is excellent offensively and pretty terrible with defense, this was an interesting run indeed. no resets and great time, good job :D good thing u dont have to face rock slide in red and blue.
Yea there’s very few rock moves period found in the game. Yellow with Giovanni and a tougher Blaine would have been rough but that’s why I pick each Pokémon’s best version!
I'm liking the new avi, slowpoke looks powerful after learning TOMBSTONER!
Also one of my partners heard your voice and wonders if you're from Mississippi, Alabama, or Louisiana. They're convinced you can't be from anywhere else lol
Alabama for sure lol.
me and articuno have a long, personal history where it was this complete beast in every game i fought it in as a youth
in blue it kept destroying me because unlike the other two, it actually had a dangerous move, but eventually, i got ahold of it and it went from a nightmare to a "cool" ally
so nowadays I like to masterball articuno and hold onto it to freeze mewtwo later
you absolutely did articuno justice by beating mewtwo's time with 0 losses
I think Mewtwo can rebound with a more solid time but for at least a few weeks, we got a new leader in the tier list!
Articuno was always my favourite pokemon as a kid, even if I used Zapdos more. Glad to see how well it did here!
Yea it was very smooth.
Man gen 3 with mind reader and sheer cold...my favorite gen version of articuno. Should be a very quick run, Articuno has awesome stats and that movepool is decent.
For sure. It’s limited but gets the best moves early and enough to not lose momentum.
I wish it wasnt at level 85 lol. I ran Articuno in LeafGreen. It was fun, but old Blue bird ain't what she used to be that's for sure 😂 it starts nice, but then you're either going to the game corner or every optional trainer til you get Ice Beam.
Although it breaks the stat distribution of the trio, I've always wished Articuno could have kept its 125 Special Attack and defense. I think a little more power would make it competitively viable, it's just on the brink without SC/Mind Reader in Gen 3.
Articuno: The legendary bird that's so cool (no pun intended) that it gains the only one-hit-KO move outside of the original three
It's crazy to think but Articuno's Blizzard is the strongest unboosted special attack in the game.
Well tied with Fire Blast, Hydro Pump and other ice types using Blizzard.
The only thing preventing Ice from being the worst type is how strong Ice is as an attacking type. Getting STAB on arguably the best attacking type in the game matters a lot. Bug, for example, has a better resistance spread, but having 7 resists on your STAB and hitting worse types for weakness makes it ultimately worse.
The situation changes quite a bit in RBY though. Fighting type basically doesn't exist and anything that runs rock slide can't take a Blizzard. Fire is never used for coverage, and Fire types don't resist Ice. Meanwhile resisting Ice and being immune to freeze are super valuable and Blizzard has 90 accuracy. So unlike in later gens, Cloyster, Lapras, Articuno, and Jynx love being Ice type. In fact, Dewgong is the only Ice type not usable in OU, and it still does well for itself in UU.
I’ve only dabbled and have surface level knowledge in Gen 1 competitive. I need to look into it more! But yea rock is non existent in red/blue as well as fighting moves. Fire is in a single fight with questionable AI.
Even in Yellow, Blaine just hits hard, and Fire type moves are only half of that.
Honestly I prefer seeing these type of runs. I like seeing the tech to make an area more doable, and the same with buying which would seem abstract vitamins at the time. But pay off later in the run. It feels more like watching Shenanagans doing a speed run vs Jrose bashing his head against a wall.
Edit: no disrespect towards Jrose, just my opinion.
I get that. I like the refined runs myself too, but I guess that’s obvious since I film them and release the video haha. But I do enjoy the optimization and plugging in numbers to see how to solve challenges. I like the ‘blind run first into the quick optimized rundown’ too but it takes longer and move my viewers don’t make it that far.
Man I LOVE this because ARTICUNO is my *ALL TIME* Favourite pokemon. The first time I played Pokemon blue back when it was released - I was in 6th or 7th grade - I "Wasted"(or so i thought for a brief moment) my master ball on Articuno and therefore could not catch mewtwo in my initial run.....but it was the beginning of a long term relationship. Especially in generations that have Hail.....set up hail, 100% Accuracy blizzard, opponents crumble. Add Aerial Ace or Fly for type coverage.
Yea I like the birds in general. Moltres got hosed but the other two are great! Glad to hear the memories lol.
18:36 TOMBSTONER BROTHER! It didn't even melt
Kept its cool 😎
Excited to see how this Ice Chicken does. Also, long time fan but just figured out how to become a member. SMH. Lol. Looking forward to the new content in 2023!
Oh wow, welcome aboard! I’m god awful at getting names in the videos so expect it to be the end of January but I really do appreciate it a lot!
No problem! I've been a fan since the Sigh-ther days and subbed ever since. Just never understood the member bit (getting old I guess) Lol.
Been a while, but gotta say. I knew I liked Articuno as a kid for a reason. I kinda like that Ice seems to be a glass cannon type -- poor defensively, brutal offensively.
In gen 1 there's really not much that resist it. As long as you have something that can hit other Ice/Water types, starting with Ice Beam does very well.
Even though articuno was hard-walled by lapras and cloyster(competitively) in gen 1, it was actually okay other than that.
Don't know why gamefreak decided to make it specially defensive in gen 2 though, ice types typically are not good at being walls, ice/flying is horrendous defensively, they should have let Articuno keep its 125 special attack and nerf its spd instead imo.
Gamefreak and their obsession with "bulky" ice types, cloyster is like the exception to the rule that slow defensive ice types are bad.
Yea Ice is great for coverage and offense but it’s often a liability defensively. Flying is always a liability in Gen 1 just to how poor the moves are for real. I guess I’m just lucky that fire is barely around and fighting has no moves.
the funny thing is.... Cloyster LOWER IS BULK TO RAISE ITS ATTACK these days with Skill Link.
like sweet lord Arceus, the on bulky ice type and it willingly loses its bulk to power up, you cant make it up.
There is only one bulky Ice type, and that is Calyrex-Ice Rider. And it can afford to keep its bulk because it otherwise would be useless with such a slow speed. There will never be anything more successfully bulky than a Calyrex-Ice Rider for Ice types, and now that they have made it they should stop trying.
In fact, I imagine the next Ice Pokémon with that stat spread will be a mid-game Pokémon.
@@iantaakalla8180 I just looked up the stats. That thing is bulky!
GREAT VIDEO!! I was cheering on that ice chicken from the start and really happy to see them on the TOP where they belong!! super fun to watch cant wait for more :)
Yea my first run was like 2h 23m and I was like I usually can shave off 10+ minutes so I tried hard to get a great one for this one.
Seems like a good enough place to dunk a little on Moltres: always wished it wasn't fire type, since the other two birds didn't have one of the starters' elemental types. Rock, to make them all strong against flying, ground to have a bird that uses earthquake, or maybe even like a pure flying type.
90s Game Freak-- hire me!
The Galarian form is Dark/Flying! I'm interesting in doing those runs but I'll gauge interest on it in the coming months. I'll be doing my first custom cross gen run next week so that'll help me out a bit.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 loved the Galarian forms. A fun tweest
@@NyQuilDreamer I'm just trying to find out the best way to streamline and get out content more efficiently. I've been sick since about Christmas and this experience has made me see that I need to be more efficient if I want to casually do this as a hobby and not miss a week.
I don't know why but I always loved gen 1's legendaries, even though they are just birdies haha
Yea I always wondered where the grass bird was. This run was clean tho.
The best Legendary Bird shows why it’s the best in a Gen 1 run! Good job GLM!
Yea, it was a pretty good run for sure.
18:35 *TOMBSTONER, BROTHER!!!!*
Appreciate it!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yessir you're welcome
More like "Artic-you know this pokemon is really good actually"
142 effective power starting move that’s only resisted by two types is pretty good!
This run is a showcase of how good Blizzard and Ice Beam are. I would even go as far as to say that if you were to take Pokemon like Weedle and Caterpie and give them any additional move in the game, choosing one of those (preferably Ice Beam for the double pp) would make the run possible, at first glance more so than choosing any other move in gen1.
That’s an interesting idea!
Ice birb, fire birb and lighting birb. With their powers combined you get CAPTAIN PLAN......BIRB.
Maybe that's Ho-oh in tomorrow's video? Hmm.
Tombstoner brother! Great video as usual
Glad you enjoyed it!
"The answer is always Ice Beam." -GLM
60% of the time, every time.
Articuno was always my favorite of the legendary birds. She's so pretty.
Sir Articuno is a genderless legendary.
GGs! Team mystic showing up today.
I’m team mystic but out of necessity of friends but team instinct is where my heart is at. Yellow is my favorite color but I was clashing with everyone lol.
Honestly not even sure you’re gonna need blizzard by level up with the ice chicken, it’s just stupidly good even without it
You'll learn it in Cinnabar before that! It's definitely needed. There's some ranges that suffer without it.
The ice type is way better in gen 1 than it is in later generations. No steel type, almost no rock or fighting moves getting used, fire doesn't resist it, a lot of powerful pokemon being part flying. Even without factoring in the 120 power, 90% accurate move with a de facto 10% chance to KO things it was a genuinely solid typing. It was really only starting in gen 2 that Gamefreak started to drop a hot stinky one on top of it.
You got that right. Hell even in Yellow it’s significantly worse due to Giovanni and Blaine being improved.
I think that the Ice type was a Kanto thing. It basically had its best showing there, has never been helped along, and then has been brought back as a zombie by making it a hyper offensive type, then by changing hail to snow. They don’t really help Ice types at all, even given what Snow does.
The point is that how similar to gems being a Unovan thing, Megas being a Gen 6 thing, and all other gimmick, Ice being good is a Red/Blue/Green gimmick.
@@iantaakalla8180 Even then I only think 1 or 2 of the Ice types will have a phenomenal showing overall. Lapras just misses out on being elite, I think Dewgong will be alright, but Articuno and Cloyster are the only ones to show something.
Happy news years sir. Helping the algorithm
I appreciate that. Feels good to have community and help!
Awww I love the Mewtwo part it's just a nice little fun capper for me
I don’t mind it but analytics tell me people don’t make it that far!
Arse Chicken uses Arse Beam.
Ice chicken, it's what's for...dessert?
I think you’d get frozen if you tried.
Articuno is my favorite gen 1 legendary
I do enjoy it as well.
Still waiting for my shout out, Matt!! #TombstonerBrother #IceeInHand!!
I’ll keep it in mind!
I could not believe that Mewtwo was dethroned.
I just redid Mewtwo last week! I think Alakazam was still ahead of Articuno at this point. Maybe, maybe not. It's worth noting that streams started around this time that redo old runs.
That is very cool! I am still going through your videos to watch them all. Almost caught up!@@GymLeaderMatt1987
Only got like 9 months of videos to go lol.
That is the best part! Means I can binge several sessions and still have more to go.@@GymLeaderMatt1987
You should do runs where Pokemon are modded to be in different leveling groups. Imagine a fast leveling Mewtwo 😲
I guess it's possible but he already one shots most Pokemon anyway. He doesn't even have to get all the rare candies lol.
Go Ice chicken! My fav of the big birds
Bird bird implies the existence of even bigger birds.
Definitely think it will be the fastest, only thing that will cause issues would be maybe Blaine but by the time we get there it might just ohko everything
There was some problems in practice but I did alright in the optimized run for sure.
#FrozenChicken!
Great video as always matt! Keep it up brotherr
Thanks! Will do! Trying to get the next one ready! Having some difficulties!
I'll grab myself a freezie pop 🤣
Icee!
Don't forget the cheeeeeeeeeeeeese burger
Mewtwo with the tools you now have at your disposal will decimate Articuno, and Articuno is very good in Gen 1 mind you but Mewtwo just is.
Yea, I need to get it in one day. I might redo Mew for a video. I've had some health issues the last week or three and my stream wasn't up to my standards but we'll get them all eventually!
Gentlemen, thaw your chickens
Leg first.
Yes! Freeze every atom in Kanto!
Everything got chilled just in time for the new year.
Arcticuno is really cool. But it's 4 times weakness to rock isn't so nice
Yea that’s a bummer but rock doesn’t exist in red/blue basically so we’ll be fine.
This was like watching Beethoven play the 5th
Lmao, that’s too far. I’m just trying to get a little more efficient each time!
Ice Chicken, BROTHER!
Appreciate that BROTHER!
Let it GOOOOO, LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
To the top, baby.
Can't believe I missed this one, ice chicken is going to the top of the tier
I can’t spoil it for ya!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 haha just finished, called it!
Well it was short lived. Alakazam redo live stream killed this time by like 5 minutes lol.
I guess the ice chicken really is the best bird.
Maybe the best Pokémon 🤔
Ice Chicken!!!!
Wow... That went... good, surprisingly
Edit: jeez matt ur quick
Everything lined up perfectly. Lorelei took a little longer than some practice runs and I blundered on Agatha by using Fly while I was poisoned but other than that, it did very well.
ICY CHICKY
Appreciate it!
Ice chicken, I love that!
Laying a icy egg today. 🥚
Protein gaming defeated the Dewgong! What a twist!
Huge workout.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 lol. A swole bird indeed
Very stronk for a birb.
Get that icy chicken some trophies
Not feeling the Mewtwo run tomorrow so it’ll stand for a couple of weeks at least!
Rhydon has a special of negative 6 lmfao
Lmao, that thing is WEAK to special attacks.
Pre video prediction. Since Articuno starts with ice beam it's going to be easily A tier maybe S tier. Especially early game.
Decent prediction!
Second fav bird type cold chicken
Who’s first?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Zapdos not the Galerian
Interesting vid as always! Cool deal
Appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it!
The coolest bird
Number 1 on the board…until Alakazam bent the game over last week and did a 2h 8m time.
*you missed the pokemon* !
Articuno ptsd sets in
What did I miss?
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 nothing. It's the old text from when we tried to catch articuno in game. You're good bro
Lmao! Yea for me it was always Zapdos and Moltes that seemed harder. I’m a dirty master ball saver so I spent a lot of time catching the 4 legendaries.
The southern Scott’s Thoughts
Matt’s Musings.
I am going to predict B tier below Zapatista. For sure better Brock split but will plateau earlier, misty will be challenging and Lorelei will be tough too. Time to sit down, grab a sodie pop and watch!
And a slower speed will mean less clutch critical hits.
I’m excited for you to come back after. I got a really good one out of this one.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that Misty strat and your “maths”…how is that legit?
Prediction: starts with ice beam and can out speed and one shot anything that could hurt it. That’s going to make it one of the fastest Pokémon period.
Aaaaaand I was close, just needed to remove the “one of”
Yea there were some optimizations to be made but when you maximized Ice Beam a good run was very possible.
I like varied sprites in your videos. Do you have any videos where you make the rival pick squirtle and you use the yellow sprite for Blastoise?
I find that sprite kind of weird and it bothers me you never see a trainer using Blastoise in pokemon yellow. I know it's the same for the other 2 starters but that Blastoise sprite in yellow is particularly over the top, I mean when did Blastoise suddenly become so mobile after being an overrated bulky tank from blue/red
If I don’t already then the third video of January likely has just that! Maybe Moltres does but I’m not at home atm to check.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Thanks, I look forward to it
Yea using the same Ol’ sprites was killing me. I have several patches and I think one person asked me for that patch to use them but I think it’s equally as boring to use the Gen 2 patch every run.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 aha found one, your Mewtwo Redo. God that sprite is weird, nice to finally see it in a battle.
Think it’s weirder than the blue version?
Very good run
Appreciate that!
I remember when I found articuno on my first playthru, I thot I was the coolest kid at school…
Hell yea. Legendary on the team just showing it off.
That silly Gen 1 back sprite!!! Mein Gott!!
I’ve been designing some sprites myself and there’s one pixel that hangs down and it bothers me a lot lol.
Arise Ice Chicken!
The one true chicken doctor.
Great video!! You have my sub
Thanks for the support!
Ice chicken sounds delicious 😋
Better heat it up first but don’t use Moltres.
Icestoner Brother xD
Chilly out today!
Out of sheer curiosity was there any reason to go back to Fuscia after Rival 5 instead of going to Sabrina immediately? Damage ranges on Fly or something?
To be honest, it's hard to say. This was a little bit ago and somethings have changed in how I approach but I wouldn't be surprised if ranges were a little short on Alakazam but I see no reason in the current moment to not just tackle it then. I'll probably redo some high tier runs in the future but my tier list is in a little flux atm but by the time we make it to November it'll be corrected. Just spitballing, I think Lorelei will still be a slight problem but everything else should be able to cruise through in the fastest order.
To be fair, ice chicken
Always good to be fair!
ice chimken!!!!!!!!
Appreciate that, bud.
Fire Turkey
Close enough’
Never understood why Ice isn't effective against Water
I can’t say that really makes sense to me. I’d think high pressure water would be super effective against ice.
The real reason? Game balance.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I mean, if I am a water creature the last thing I want is the water that surrounds me to be turned into a solid block of ice, which sounds like an easy task for a creature with ice powers. It makes more sense to me than grass being effective against water (because grass absorbs water maybe?). But yeah, game balance matters too.
Yea, I think it's a little too analytical towards the game. 99.9% of Pokemon that are water use Ice moves and they don't freeze while doing it. The thing to keep in mind that water is like the overarching element in ice so that's where it makes the most sense that it supersedes it.
Articuno is the best poke i'm gen 1 🎉🎉🎉
It’s top 3! Best of its two types.
How do you start with a specific pokemon, GLM?
Would you consider doing a run with Arcanine since he is unofficially the leader of the legendary bird trio?
I’m sure I’ll do every run eventually! Got some exciting things in January!
Icy Chicken!
Appreciate that bud.
Ice Chicken!
Appreciate that, brother.
Yay another video!
Last one of the year is a banger!
ice type carry
Honestly a perfect run. I do think Mewtwo can run the table but something like Mew that I’ll do tomorrow doesn’t stand a chance.
Ice Beam be looking like freeze dry on misty
71 effective power! Still a strong move even when resisted.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 off 125 SA sounding real nice
Real nice, especially when you get blizzard. 180 power with STAB is insanity.
When Red and Blue is the only time Articuno has a Freeze Dry
So, which Bluth character’s chicken dance best epitomizes this Ice Chicken?
I can’t say I’ve ever drawn that parallel lol.
Done and dusted. I know you watch gen two runs 😊
I watch a few. I recommend Hidden Gym. I think he's got the best on the market.

I'd love to see another Mewtwo tbh
Yea I’ll probably do one sooner rather than later.
this only furthers proves to me that OG Phoenix got screwed by dumb move pool... why didn't it start with Flamethrower?! its a comparable move for BLEEP sake!!
I think there’s enough movesets and evidence to say they thought that fire spin was going to be THE fire move and didn’t bother with it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i heard its leer, should have been flamethrower at 51, even so, that’s really late for a solo run.
that and fire spin sucks and it’s not like Flamethrower or Ice Beam. Shame they treated Moltres (and fire types) so bad.
Yea notice how little Pokémon actually get flamethrower. I think in the code the integers got messed up for some sets leading to leer. I can’t look in the code atm since I’m not home but it makes some sense. I think it’s still speculation but I bet there’s some truth to it.
But look at how many Pokémon learn fire spin later than flamethrower, they thought it was the best move. Even the infamous Charizard tcg card has it haha.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 it’s no secret gen 1 is a big, buggy mess 😆
I’ve been diving deep into the assembly and learning about gameboy games in general. It’s honestly really creative and fascinating how they reused numbers and things to fit a large game on such a small cartridge.
Icy chicken
Appreciate that, brother.
