I’m not going to spoil it all since I don’t know if you’ve done Lugia yet, but I love that Gen 2 has unique challenges for both Physical and Special Pokemon. Well I took a look at a lot of people's runs and more importantly the world record speed runs. In my next video I'll probably talk about how Paras for dig is pretty trash and the escape rope method seems to be faster in 99% of runs after more testing. Hell, you probably shouldn't even wait to catch an Oddish/cut user or to buy escape ropes but I'd say I'm 95% there in terms of being good at the game but there are a few things I'm still learning. I mean, a 1h21m time is pretty killer! The next one will be one of the worst runs though to get a look at the game from the other side of the coin.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 if a human can take a hyper beam then pokemon dex entries being completely overhyped/overpowered makes more sense. The theory that kids(since the majority of the trainers are kids) Write the dex entries makes sense. Like some Pokémon can break the “speed of light “but base speed is like 102
Very impressive run!! I'm super happy to see Crystal runs starting! Are we going to see Gold and Silver on the same chart? It's been a long time since I played these, but if I remember right, there's a few different battles that I think would make a big enough difference to just limit it to Crystal. Don't make two charts. Just don't bother with G/S, IMO.
prediction before watching: whoa no idea, really. Fire types are strong in Johto I guess and it's also a box art legendary, but it's somewhat defensive. Ho-oh has great staying power, so few (if any) resets. Ho-oh will do great, this will be a fast run, but it won't be the fastest.
Matt if you think return is busted on a normal type you would love to do an ursaring run lol... it's attack stat is monstrous. Just finished watching the video and that is a blistering time. Interesting move set too at the end and a fairly low level. Good run.
Damn, no faith in my abilities. I could do a baby Pokémon around that time! I haven’t completely mastered Gen 2 yet but I do feel I’m better than most. I spent a lot of time learning!
@Gym Leader Matt I am usually off on the first run but I was close on level I thought ho oh would level slower than this but I usually would guess higher level wise in gen 2
Uh. Ho-oh is by NO definition maybe one of the strongest Gen 2 Pokémon. He is definitely worse than the Mews, and Lugia, he is probably worse than Snorlax and Zapdos, and may be worse than Celebi. The reason he is in Ubers is because he is stupidly bulky and would be cancer in OU. Same for Celebi.
I wouldn't make the mistake of judging a Pokemon solo run off of competitive. For a solo run, I don't know if it can be beat. Maybe by Lugia. What's good in competitive, like Snorlax, doesn't translate due to slow speed, slow leveling group, etc. It's why in gen 1 solo runs things like Exeggutor are trash and things like Kangaskahn beats Tauros despite those being good in competitive. If I was making a battling video in competitive, sure, but this isn't that.
Definitely not a first try, haha. I spent a long time getting decent and this was the optimized route. It was important to do it without anything too gimmicky. I think Scott is going to get rid of Hidden Power soon but I think Return is much more busted but for me, my worries for future runs is that every single Red fight will come down to Curse/Rest/Return to get past and if I feel it's going that way, I might end the timer at Blue and do Red as a bonus because that's not the most fun strat. I'm doing Igglybuff yet. The dichotomy should let me see some of that.
Abusing curse/rest seems pretty similar in spirit to abusing badge boosts, FWIW. Not sure why he'd want to remove hidden power, there's a bunch of pokemon that get walled by the rival and ghost gym without HP Ghost.
I disagree with it being similar to badge boosts. It would be like every Pokemon getting a 126 base power neutral move and Swords Dance via TM and every end game turning into that. Not every Pokemon can boost and even if they do boost the moves can be different. Curse/Rest/Return just feels bad to watch but it's necessary for some Pokemon and makes it even faster on Pokemon that could do it without. Ho-oh I made a point to not do it but the next video I do. I'm sure I'll talk about it then. As for Hidden Power, I think it's like the bottom rung of problematic things for gen 2. Banning it just makes bad Pokemon awful and even though he says it'll make it better to watch, I disagree wholeheartedly. I told him my thoughts but since he took the break for the month of videos, he seems much less into what others think. He even implied we should all do that too.
You definitely should stick to your own approach rather feel like you have to follow the crowd. That's what makes your channel unique, after all. I preferred your use of in game time for the same reason.
Yea I like it but real time works better because it gets wacky at x4. These games are just too long to keep the same formula as Gen 1 but we’ll stay the same for those.
See I usually play the games with 1 pokemon or 2 max. I usually hear the opposite complaint of the leveling curve when using a full team or say 4-5. That it takes forever to grind all your Pokemon up to the same level. But then when you get to Kanto it drops too far regardless. I guess maybe to encourage starting with different mons from the Kanto region but idk
I just find playing with anything more than 3 to be boring, unless I'm playing like Emerald Kaizo or something of that nature. The new Pokémon games have exp share for all 6 now but it's a pain to grind in those old games.
24:10 i swear, because of how easy return and headbutt are to get, raticate is actually really good to play through gen2. also Rattata starts strong with hyper fang as well, i think its one of the best if not the best pokemon you can get early on if you dont wanna use your starter.
Well you'd be on to something but what you mean to say is NORMAL types are really good to playthrough gen 2. Ursaring, Girafarig, etc. are all top tier picks.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah, but rattata is easier to get, since you find it on the first route and its not insanely rare like teddiursa and it doesnt run from you as well, simply catching a teddiursa can take hours and its not even that worth it since its slow and evolves very late and doesnt learn a good move like hyper fang, ive tried teddiursa, and rattata performed way better for me. but yeah normal pokemon in general are really good because of this, i just like rattata the best since it can replace your starter and it isnt hard to get. ofc if you just hack your starter into a normal type, then other normal types will be better.
I beat the Game almost but they were some Glitch with Snorlax in Crystal everytime I'd play the Poke Flute it wouldn't wake up couldn't make it to Blaine or the others
IMHO its just as good as Moltress is ie not really good the Lugia is so much better in Gen 2 and I don't know what they were thinking Mereep ISN'T in crystal and its 1 of the BEST Thunder types in game for its final evolutionary form.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 if a human can take a hyper beam then pokemon dex entries being completely overhyped/overpowered makes more sense. The theory that kids(since the majority of the trainers are kids)
Write the dex entries makes sense. Like some
Pokémon can break the “speed of light “but base speed is like 102
Those are things I just simply don't care to think about while I'm sick lol. Let the kids write whatever.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 so I’m Matt’s world Lance commited man slaughter
Hehe I love the tombstoner shirt
Yea, it was my prize for the second place finish in a race! I knew I had to have it
If only Chuck gave you the TM for Tombstoner. XD
I can picture Lance vibing to "Somebody's Gotta Die" while his Dragonite disintegrates fools. LOL
Lmao just killing people. ‘It’s ok! I’m the champion!’
Poor moltres, looking forward to this run
It was a really good one. The next one, no so much. Trying a baby Pokémon lol.
Nice vid homie hope you recover from covid and feel better soon! Looking forward to see ur content this year lol
Working on it! Probably skipping streaming this week though.
Poor Moltres. Also the amount of times escape rope and dig were mixed up/combined was pretty entertaining
Yea, it happened too often, haha.
That's the plan! No need to mess with gold/silver. The differences aren’t enough for me to swap back and forth like I do with yellow and stuff.
Such a great run and I love the breakdowns u did! Keep it up! I'm rooting for u brother
Thanks! Recovering for now but shouldn’t really affect anything outside of a stream or two lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Godspeed Matt! I hope u feel better then
Just trying to not fall too far behind actual work is the main thing right now lol.
@Gym Leader Matt well u gotta take care of urself first! Get that money
Just found you, half way threw you got my sub.
Nice. Appreciate that. Enjoy the content!
prediction before watching:
whoa no idea, really.
Fire types are strong in Johto I guess and it's also a box art legendary, but it's somewhat defensive. Ho-oh has great staying power, so few (if any) resets.
Ho-oh will do great, this will be a fast run, but it won't be the fastest.
I’d say it would be the fastest since I haven’t timed a run in crystal yet and it has to be the fastest lol.
Poor Moltres, BROTHER!
They all say that until I hit them with the Galarian Moltres video.
Matt if you think return is busted on a normal type you would love to do an ursaring run lol... it's attack stat is monstrous. Just finished watching the video and that is a blistering time. Interesting move set too at the end and a fairly low level. Good run.
I think I'll do Igglybuff instead.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Dont understand igglybuffs design, was it supposed to be cute? It is an abomination!
Lung is also "dragon" in chinese (like ryu in japanese).
Nice. Good to know. Now the mystery of Nobz
You missed an opportunity to name ho-oh "chik f-lame"
True. I generally try to keep names to 4 characters if I can help it to keep things even though.
You know. In a way, Pryce is basically the Johto counterpart to Gen 1 Blaine. Bad pokemon. Bad AI. And in Pryce's case, even worse moveset.
I guess like a grass or flying type might find him difficult but I haven't seen it yet.
You should say Escape Dig
Probably phase out the dig entirely because it’s just a subpar, bad boy strat. The ropes are just faster and more consistent.
Sacred fire is a fun move to start with
Low PP, high damage.
Arise Rainbow Chicken!
He rose!
I’m at work smiling. Thanks Matt
Glad to hear it
His name is Matt and that says everything. He must be a great human being
Lmao, what?
Prediction level 66
Time 2 hours 10 minutes
Let me know if you have gen 2 questions Matt
And as always TOMBSTONER BROTHER
Damn, no faith in my abilities. I could do a baby Pokémon around that time! I haven’t completely mastered Gen 2 yet but I do feel I’m better than most. I spent a lot of time learning!
@Gym Leader Matt I am usually off on the first run but I was close on level
I thought ho oh would level slower than this but I usually would guess higher level wise in gen 2
Janine =ninja mind blown
Lmao, gottem.
I know Steelix has the Abillities Sturdy but I guess it don't always Activate
No abilities in gen 2.
Dude you should totally face Bryce's Manga team. It would be so cool if gamefreak added it as a secret super final bosses Boss.
Can’t say I’ve ever kept up with the manga!
YEAHH, CHUCK BRO WITH THE TOMBSTONER, BROTHER
Chuckstoner, brother.
Yeehaw big fire bird go brr
Appreciate it!
Armes Lavados!
Google translated this to ‘arms washed’
Very nice pathing for a first try.
Yo Brother. Love that Chuck brother ❤️
Also, the names in Chucks gyms are mostly Chinese names.
I couldn't ever figure anything out about Lung. That one stumps everyone.
It's a self-cooking chicken!
A wonder of modern science.
You’ll definitely hear different balance reasonings from solo runners than you will from everyone else lol.
I just find playing with anything more than 3 to be boring, unless I'm playing like Emerald Kaizo or something of that nature. The new Pokémon games have exp share for all 6 now but it's a pain to grind in those old games.
You should do celebi sometime.
Think I’m gonna pull from the bottom and see how Igglybuff does.
If I ever change the rules to be limited to just catching a route 1 Pokemon over how the other solo runs work, then maybe it'll be alright.
love the way you pronounce ice
It’ll forever haunt me Lmao.
I freakin love your accent. It's like they named croconaw just for you! ✌️
Thanks!
Poor Moltres!
Appreciate that, bud.
@Gym Leader Matt Keep up the good work. Love all these runs. Very enjoyable even as background noise!
the spinners in this game are pure evil
No one knows how they work lol.
Poor Moltres 😢
He never stood a chance!
I'm supposed be working but this is fine. Lol
I’m sure you can multitask!
Poor Moltres
He did his best haha.
POOR MOLTRES
Appreciate that, brother.
You ever take a whack at either of the Pokemon Stadium games and/or Coliseum/XD?
I'm in my mid 30s lol. I played them when they came out for sure.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm closing in age wise lol. Stadium was my shit as a kid. Pumped for the upcoming port on the switch
Yea I've thought about the Switch port. I think it might be more fun to make content on an emulator with Pokemon imported from previous runs though!
I beat the Game almost but they were some Glitch with Snorlax in Crystal everytime I'd play the Poke Flute it wouldn't wake up couldn't make it to Blaine or the others
I can't say. That's something you'd have to figure out on your own, bud.
IMHO its just as good as Moltress is ie not really good the Lugia is so much better in Gen 2 and I don't know what they were thinking Mereep ISN'T in crystal and its 1 of the BEST Thunder types in game for its final evolutionary form.
Hi-oh not that good? I think it’ll be the top run and set the standard for a good run in the video!
