*Morgan is a Lame Villain with a Lame Plan* The show wants Morgan to be the next great villainess after Sheila and Phyllis but she’s not as fun or clever as they were. In addition to not getting to see Morgan carry out her schemes, Morgan’s plan also isn’t very brilliant - it relies mostly on money and luck. She’s obviously a very successful designer since she can buy a house on the spot in Beverly Hills and pay a man to kidnap a child and fake her death (yet despite being rich, she whines all the time about how awful her life has been since her abortion!). And then consider the extraordinary luck she needed to pull off her plan. Somehow after going to NY and in less than a few days, she managed to fly to St Thomas, find out where Ridge and Taylor were staying, and convince and bribe a man at the resort to carry out a heinous capital crime? She was lucky he didn’t report her right away to the authorities, that neither Phoebe nor Katherine woke up while he was taking Steffy, that Steffy didn’t wake up screaming while she was in the storage locker, that no one _opened_ the storage locker. And how did this man transport a child that’s not his to LA? And if all that wasn’t inexplicable enough, now Morgan is going to raise the child in the same neighborhood as the parents, hope no one sees her, and Steffy’s just going along with it without crying for her parents? _This makes no sense!_ At least with Sheila, the baby was taken at birth so Lauren could be around Sheila’s baby and not suspect it was hers. Indeed unlike Morgan, neither Sheila nor Phyllis were rich so they had to rely instead on their own cleverness to pull off their schemes and they had to carry out those schemes themselves so we were more invested in them. Wouldn’t it have made more sense for _Katherine_ to be in on the scheme instead of this boat man? Morgan and Katherine could've become friends while Morgan was friends with Taylor and that way we’d get to see Morgan being clever as she slowly manipulates Katherine into being her spy and accomplice. Katherine would have complete access to the family and their plans, and her taking Steffy without a commotion would make sense since Steffy would be comfortable with her nanny. This would also further connect Morgan to both Sheila and Phyllis - Sheila with the “evil nanny” theme and Phyllis who often bullied her nanny Joni and made her an unwitting accomplice at times. I understand that Brad wanted to surprise the viewer with the reveal that Steffy was still alive and that Morgan plans to raise her as her child. But there was a way to achieve that and still let us see the scheme being carried out. We could’ve had scenes between Morgan and Katherine where we see her planning something, but we don’t know what it is, then an ominous reference to wanting Ridge and Taylor to feel the pain of losing a child, then we see Katherine on the boat saying Steffy has disappeared and the viewer wonders if she did the unthinkable. And then finally Katherine brings Steffy to Morgan and see what the ultimate plan was all along. For Morgan to be in the same lineage as Sheila and Phyllis she needed to be played by a dynamite actress, we needed to see her carrying out her schemes, and her schemes needed to actually be clever and make sense.
Brilliant post Nick! I couldn't agree more. 👏👏👏 Y&R not only showed us how Sheila stole Lauren's baby in great detail but they also portrayed her as gentle and loving with Scottie and they didn't torture Lauren unnecessarily (Sheila didn't put chloroform on Scottie and she didn't make Lauren think her baby had been shark food!) LOVE your point that Katherine should've been the accomplice instead. That would make a lot more sense. They could've had her resent or envy Ridge and Taylor's lifestyle and Morgan could play on that.
100%. I don’t think this reveal would have had any “surprise” value back then either. The problem with every part of the Morgan saga is that it relies on off-screen or retcon storytelling. The gift of a great villain is that we get to watch their schemes unfold and we wince because we sometimes enjoy watching their diabolical antics. That’s what made Shiela so menacing and enjoyable. Indeed, imagine if Katherine was to Morgan what Mike was to Sheila.
I love this post! You are so right that the way for this storyline to make sense would have been for Katherine to be involved. And I agree that it's getting quite frustrating how all these important parts of the story take place off screen. The main problem, of course, is how _uncharismatic_ Morgan is as a villain. We don't even believe that she is doing all these things because we never see the "wheels turning" in her mind the way we did with Sheila. Instead we keep finding out about villainous acts and plots that we never saw her carry out, and that don't truly connect with the portrayal of the character. We never saw her write that e-maiI, or call Taylor to make her leave that message for Ridge, or fake the first pregnancy test. We saw very little of her with the snake. And now we didn't see her take any active part in what was supposedly her own scheme to fake Steffy's death. It's like she's completely passive on screen and then we are simply _told_ about all these elaborate schemes that she has supposedly been up to.
It actually would have made more sense for Katherine to be in on it. I'm surprised the boat captain who didn't know these girls from Adam, was able to determine the correct twin to take. Wouldn't it have been something if he couldn't tell which girl was which and in his haste nabbed the wrong twin? It also would have given Katherine some more dimension as opposed to just being a terrible nanny who was, literally, asleep on the job. So much so that an entire human was able to come in and chloroform a whole child under her care while she was in the same room. I hope they fire her when the truth comes out. And I totally agree with @AnnieO... Morgan's a lame villain who can't even get a job done herself. You think Sheila would leave MIKE to do the job? Sheila would never... She knows of you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.
Why do these grown as s men let Morgan bully them when they have leverage over her?? First Clarke, now this sea captain. One call to the cops and they could both expose Morgan yet they're running scared from her. 🙄🙄
Right? He ran outta there without the money. Should have run straight to the police. Or, if he was smart, take a cue from Morgan boasting about the last man she left in a hospital, find Clarke and they BOTH work together to get Steffy away from Morgan (and get the police). Morgan has wayyy too many loose ends walking round town to be getting away with this.
Okay, so I have a few questions. One, how did Captain Caribbean Snidely Whiplash know which twin was Steffy? They’re identical and were wearing the same outfit. Two, what would he have done if she wasn’t sleeping on the outside of the bed? Wouldn’t he have woken up Phoebe and Katherine when he leaned over to get Steffy? Three, how did *nobody* ever think to check the locker the whole time they were running around the boat? Little kids are so notorious for climbing into small spaces, appliances, etc that it stretches all credulity to think that neither parent or Katherine would check the locker. Well, maybe not Katherine. Amber, tearful: “Don’t you want to know where I just came from, Deacon?” Deacon, not even looking up: “Nah not really.” And thus the great love story begins 🙄. The scenes with Steffy and Y2K Miss Havisham were amusing because, although the twins playing Steffy and Phoebe don’t have a fraction of the charisma Little Eric does, she did some unintentionally funny things: Morgan, cooing: “Ooh, look at you, sweetie! Darling girl!” Steffy: *Gives her the most obvious side-eye a toddler can manage* Morgan: “You love that little lamb I bought you, don’t you?” Steffy: *Literally throws the lamb behind her* But the absolute best part was when Morgan started her Rime of the Ancient Mariner tale again about how everyone took her babies and was jealous of her (hah!) and done her wrong, and Steffy started humming. Even the kid is tired of hearing Morgan’s stories 😂.
ITA. I wonder if it had been random or if Morgan really had wanted Steffy - and that it would work out so easily for Morgan's criminal helper. He not only succeeded in hiding that twin on the boat even when everyone had been running and searching for her, but he later had been able to smuggle her from the boat and back to the US. And at some time between that, he had been able to take the life jacket (Steffy still wore it when he hid her at that storage box), tore it up to look like a shark attack and to drop it into the ocean.
Well, Little Eric is used to having new mommies and daddies all the time and just goes with the fIow. But obviously Steffy isn't used to this and reacts accordingly. 😂 I _loved_ how when Morgan started telling her entire life story to Steffy, Steffy just sat there nodding like a mini therapist who realizes there is no point in reasoning with this person.
