yeah, it was perfect arc welding , but did you notice how close the actual welder was to the workpiece to be welded? welding like that will put pock burn marks all over the welder, causing rust on the case, damaging the screen/knobs and plastic housing on what looks like a brand new welder
For anyone learning, after the root pass using 6010, it might help you to grind down the root pass to make sure that root is clean and theres no debris in there if its an xray test. 6010 is a DIRTY burning rod. Dont grind down far, just the top where the “coin stack” look is and not much farther. Just to make sure its clean. Dye penetration tests will reveal that shit as well. On the hot pass, you can also oscillate with a circular motion, making sure to hold the top wall for a quarter second or so to prevent undercutting on the top side. Gravity usually takes care of the bottom side assuming you dont come down too far and undercut. After cleaning the hot pass, run stringers over the top of it real nice and slow, 7018 looks real nice if you just let the rod burn and fill in :) Professionally schooled, worked as a stick welder for a bit. Got 2000+ hours welding :) certified in 3G 7018 open root structural v groove welding
@Skyler Houtz theres always competition man, the thing about welding is it comes down to the test, if you pass it, the other competition doesnt matter. Just pass the test. Easier said than done, I know. But as long as you can pass a cwi administered test you should be gone Also ive never heard of hyperbaric welding sooo cant help much there
What if your goal is strong (full/near full penetration) welds on 1/4 to 1/2 inch plate? Obviously, bevel (both sides) when possible. Is it best to run a 6010/6011 root pass then?
Dude, thank you so much for these videos. I'm currently at a welding tech school in the ass of nowhere Virginia, and my instructor is bottom level garbage can. Threw us into the lab, said here's the gas, here's the fuel, don't blow yourselves up, figure the rest out as you go. Only thing he actually told us for fillet was weld at a 45 degree angle, and to lay the root with a 6010 and the hot passes with 7018. Didn't even explain what a damn hot pass was. No explanation of proper amps, distance from weld, how to start an arc, where to hold the rod and at what distance from the metal. Keep in mind, I'd never touched a power tool before walking into this guy's class. I'd be lost without this info! You're helping me make my dream of a career in the trades into a reality. Great channel.

He has me on these tee joints and not once has he had me do this many and or said to use both rods during it. Maybe that’s later cause I only just got put on stick. I passed my MiG section with the bare minimum of instructions. I had no clue what the dials did on the wire feed, or the voltage machine. No clue on distance. Thankfully o have a buddy who did the same course and he’s been the one nudging me in the right directions

I've been a machinist my whole adult life, but took an adult welding course thru the local CC. I skipped the 1G and passed the 3G (vertical up)SMAW test first try because the instructor was so good. I had zero experience, literally never held a electrode before the course. Good instruction is priceless.
1. i learned to never use a wire wheel to remove mill scale 2. i learned some good movement patterns for better welds including the forward back pause and small circle methods 3. i learned to always cover 50% of the last pas on the new pass
My father was a union iron worker and we had a garage that he kept all his welding stuff. After school I would come home and head straight to the garage to practice welding before he got home. I’ve been a carpenter for almost 40 years and do a lil bit of welding where I work now at a marina. Going to renew my welding on the railroad ...but I did my first welding 12 yrs ago but on the railroad you need seniority to work on rip track to weld.. so now 12 yes later have to do it again thanks for the tips!
The biggest problem I had when testing at the first couple of places is not letting the material properly cool. Don't let your nerves get to you. Take your time and don't get in a hurry. If the material gets too hot it won't flow right and if your doing verticals it will start falling out and look sloppy. Then your going to have to grind alot. Amperage if course depends on your material thickness and rod size, but for a standard 7018 1/8 rod on 1/4 test plate I like to run at 115. But machines can be squirrely so see if they will allow you to run a pass or two on some scrap material. Don't make the same mistakes I made, drink some water, smoke a cigarette or whatever and then burn in another bead. Try to get comfortable and relaxed.
With the Miller machine I use everyday at school with 7018 I run it at 120-122amps we’re just doing half inch angle irons but does that 5-7amp difference matter? I know vertical I have to go cooler and hold a bit longer before whipping but would I see better welds with less spatter over just 5 amps?
I found using a ceramic paint stripping disc very quick in removing the mill scale. Made I beams and was having issues removing the scale. Used grind discs, sanding discs, and saw the ceramic paint and rust removal discs on Amazon. Love them. Used 3 grind discs to clear about 4 feet of web. Switched to ceramic and was able to get entire 147 inches cleared with 1 disc. Doesn't cut deep either. Fewer gouges than grinding.
That everlasting machine is insane, I like how it has all that inbuilt, and think that’s just smart by the company and a lot of people might get think it’s overkill but the better it makes it for the welder the better the weld

I’ve been struggling trying to get that part of the weld done on my T joint. I like your videos and want to see more. I just found you so I don’t know if you do tig or not but if you do I’d love to see some videos sense the area I live in doesn’t have ma y tig welders and so I would like to perfect that. My technical school when I was there had a $25,000 dollar welder and all of the basic ones in each booth were millers. But my county had ridiculous funding from some rich dude
Have about 6 months welding experience we learned counting in 1000ths if you can’t pace yourself consistently with “1,2” try counting to “1/1000” every oscillation

That's a 3F, show a 3G, with or without back plate, also you should explained AWS ,AISC, ASME STANDARDS there's a difference.

i use a old weld machine from yugoslavia, its called a Varstroj Ledlava and the only setting it has is to change amps from 40 to 180
