- Today we got a special guest Merle Swaggart doing his version of an open root plate test. He is welding a 1/2" plate using the stick welding process. The root and hot pass will be welded with a 6010 rod and the fill and cap will be with a 7018 rod!

I swear I learn more from videos like this than anything I'm shown in school.
You’re welding school doesn’t teach stuff like this???
I think I could do that, it was explained very well, and we got to see the weld as Jon was doing the welding. Good job and it was a nice looking weld.
Thank you for the Video.
thanks for this video, I loved the overall explanation by the merle. Keep coming up with such content.
Very nice, like the technique on the cover pass, circle left pause, then the middle, then circle right pause!
Nice job!
Very detailed and precise. Thanks for being informative. Appreciate the tips. Nice work by the way. 💯
Thank you guys for the video, well done!
Lets see the back side 👌🥳🤷♂️🙋🏻♂️
Right
No kidding lol
😂 !!
😂I’m sure he got enough penetration
Why you not show to us about the back side bro
Doing this tomorrow in class. Awesome job and video, thanks!!
Great job young man!!!
Great Techniques! Welding with confidence, thanks👍
Helpful video, thanks Merle!
video is very detailed and precise welding explanation. good job! keep it up.
Starting these in class tonight. Nice vid. Thanks
It amazes me how simple your welding tests are in the states here in chinada where only allowed a wire wheel no removing any metal. You have to have a backing plate and you have to demonstrate atleast 2 stop and starts your root gets visual inspection for undercut and on your hot pass your not allowed to go up and down only side to side as the up down traps slag and destroys the structural integrity of your weld and the once you finally get your cap on you get choose either bend test or x-ray test always choose the bend test because if they find any slag on the x-ray test fail if your plate bends into a perfect U with no cracks and no slag spots over 1/32 of an inch show on the back side of the bend you pass
No it’s just one of the test. They test you on many things.
That's awesome brother keep up the good work 👍
Thanks I’m in highschool and this helped a lot I kept melting my metal on the bevel
Wow that guy is a good ass Welder his skills shows thats his on another level.
Been having trouble with this test here at RSI but this video helped out
Great video
Im currently doing this right now. Good to see some other POV’s of how someone else does it just to help out. Good video
Fantastic demonstration. Tnx.
Looks good
Thanks for the video
up and down hand movement at the root can be processed with 7018 electrode ??
Thank you
Great job WT fam. Wish we could've seen each pass before grinding them off so know what to look for
@@weldtube definitely not a "hate" comment guys! ( should've worded it differently). But I'm currently in school at tulsa in Jacksonville, and I'm all over y'alls videos within the 1st hour trying to learn. Thanks for all you guys do for us!
I graduated from Tulsa welding school in Jacksonville in 2010. What is the cost of the school nowadays?
@@cakefartrpg2280 cost now is $20k
Great job
Thank you so much
Nice video, well explained... but I'd like to see what you're talking about. What's it look like when you're done with the pass?
Tanks .. For this test
Very good brother, from Indonesian 🔥🔥👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How much amps needed for root pass? Is it 9mm plate?
You're my favorite Rosendo!!
Nice work
Merle is awesome
Awesome 👍
That’s guys a beast
When I took my test many years ago we didn't get to set up the test plates ( the inspector did ) and all passes were done with 7018 and no grinding allowed. Hand wire brush ,scratch awl and chipping hammer.never strike the slag with the hammer .
Did you weld at 75 amps the whole thing?
Name like that, you better be a welder!! Lol, great video!!
Did you fuck around with the arc force or “dig” running that root? Or did you keep it around 20% the whole way through?
Thanks ♥️
4:14 What kind of grinder is that? Its look smaller and more handheld
Great video 💯 subscribed
Can you show how to weld thin metal ?
Good Job homies
How long should this test take?
Nice
This would run on me every time I welding up with 7018 the whole thing running away on me and it looks bad.
You make it look so easy.
Try consantrating on your ark length, you don't want it to be to long
Thank you
I going to try that next time
Forte the root must electrodes thinner?
Hello, excellent thank you very much
thank u its cool
Nice One Sir.. i'm Solid follower.
Thanks bro
thx !
How many many amphere is that please answer thankyou
Will it pass xray? I would do it differently.
How do you know what pattern to use when making your 1st pass? Do you do circles, whip it &come back, or left right then move up? How do you know what to use or when to use what pattern?
You can do a whip and pause like going back and forth into your puddle or you can just run a straight bead root pass by just going straight no weaving you just gotta go a lil slower to fully stitch the sides and get full penetration.
Seeing the beads of each pass and the root bead penetration would be helpful.
The root looked like shit I bet that’s why they didn’t show it. Way to much fire on the front side of the plate for that back side to look good
@@Leightonellert We use one eights 6011 for the root and usually 3/32 7018 for the filler passes and cap unless the procedure dictates the fill and cap as 1/8 . Same fit up as he is using. I'm sure the root bends would fail on the one he done in his video. We don't normally need to change the settings on the machine to go from the 1.8th 6011 to the 3/32nd 7018. Most times the machine is some distance away so that works nicely.
good jobs
Thx bro
i love it, from philippines
the best vid and very informative as always gj weldtube fam hope u always have great vids
Muy buen video, bien explicado. Solo me hubiera gustado ver como queda cada pase el de raíz y los de terminación, tal vez si los hubieras cepillado y mostrado para ver los cordones. Saludos desde Nicaragua
Nice
What amps would you use for a 1/4" plate?
Bout 60-65 would be best.
Very good technique for not showing root pass…
How are ur fingers not smoking I can’t cue stick more then half a rod
So after you lay the root down you grind it so it’s all flat in the middle ??
Yep. It should be smooth. No flux.
Thanks guys Gra8 video....I am currently doing this for a welding assignment soon & I was wondering what’s the lowest I can go on a hot pass cause 90 and 85 amps for me is to hot I can’t move my hands that fast So the puddle flows out on me regular...so is 70-75 good Option Or not ?
Dont get hang up about the amps just keep a tight arc and wet in the toe of your welds. And each machine is different and some can show a different amperage then its actually putting out.
Does anybody prefer stringer beads when filling
Ya hace falta otro video en español con proceso smaw 😞
Great video!
Thank you!!
Ranjan kumar,
1g2g3
Very nice good
Nice.. i want to try..😁😁
Instead of having a 6010 hot pass can I use a 7018 for the hot pass
yes 7018 1/8 run it around 120 amps or 3/32 7018 at around 90/95 amps
why not run stringers?
Really struggling with my root. I looked awesome last week and the slag fell right off the backside... but this week it looks like shit and is all bumpy. My teachers told me to grind it down thin when I start over with new electrode but when I do that it burns a hole and then I get stuck there cause I'm not able to fill it up... really don't know what to do. I feel like I'm doing everything in the same way as last week but now it's totally different results
Your teacher is crap at his job
Fanclub From Thailand
Damn, resendo looks so much more different from his first couple vids
🤣
You not shown root how you weld just grind and started hot pass why?
60-10 in Ac o DC???
Cuando Aran otro video en español
Very educational u
What's the difference between using 6010 on the hot pass vs 7018?
6010 you can manipulate the rod differently, you can go up and down to fill the root without slag and deformation, if you try that with 7018 it will slag ajd cause porosity
It helps a lot on open root
🇧🇩Nice welder🇸🇬👌👌
Turkije?
Need more
Do you guys bend test your stuff
I've never seen the up-down-left-right movement before.
How long you been welding Mark?? We call it the Christmas tree technique here. Very common, in saying that some welding firms here don't allow weaving at all.. straight up stringers all the way out
The up then down side to side is the T-technique for 6010 or also for 6011 leaves a nice stack of dimes if done correctly.
👍
How to weld pipeline
CAN E6013 ROD DO THE ROOT PASS?
It can but it's not recommended as it's a low penetrating rod designed for thin sheet metal where as the 6010 and 6011 have a hotter burn to them and penetrate better especially on open root welds
Im from Indonesian
Best of the best
Definitely agree with all the positive remarks here !! But just curious why they didn't show any of the weld till after it was completed...🤷♂️ exc. Here's the root pass completed, Here's the hot pass completed
Here's the fill pass completed
😊😊😊😊
He talking lots about technique, but not showing the actual welds, in between passes....
I might try this tomorrow
Podrían hacer más en español sería muy bueno
I want saw back side root
