    I feel slight sympathy for Hartmann. Sure, he was bullying the crap out of Pyle (and that backfired after all), but he was just doing his job and he was able to recognize courage or skill. He promoted Joker to squad leader because Joker proved he has enough courage to stand up to him. Although he humiliated Pyle on the daily basis, he appreciated his marksmanship.
    His job was to make bunch of regular young dudes into efficient Marines able to survive in jungle, and that cannot be done easily I suppose.

      Well duh
      Marine corps drill sergeants are all hard asses like that
      If they see someone even hesitate they will select him out and bully him until he quits because the marines don't take quitters.
      And if you hesitate then you'll hesitate when it really matters
      Like he was saying with the killing at the moment of truth.

      +RayPall Yup, I agree. Hartmann shouldn't have been killed. He was a typical DI, not a psycho and it kind of ended the first half of the movie on an off note. Besides which, it would have been impossible for Pyle to get ammo and they had already graduated, no one would still be in the barracks anyway.
      I just view Hartmann's death as a dream sequence, it didn't happen because it didn't make sense and couldn't have happened.

    0:57 I'm well aware this is obvious foreshadowing to Pyle's murder-suicide, but I've always thought it was really poignant for other reasons. It shows Hartman really did care about Pyle, and his brutal tactics were in an effort to make him the best soldier he could be.

    • @locksh
      @locksh 6 лет назад +23

      Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. My heart kind of sank when Hartman said his shooting was outstanding, both because I was in a sense happy for Pyle for finally achieving something, but it's also a very tragic scene once you know how it all ends for the both of them. You can really see how much Hartman enjoyed seeing this (as much as he could possibly show), because he cared for Pyle and he wanted him to succeed.

      @whitephosphorus15 5 лет назад +5

      @@garyquail2347 If your complaint about the M16 is that it jams due to dirt and sand then why would you prefer an M14? The AR-15 is very well sealed and prevents dirt from getting in the action, the Garand style action on the M14 has a huge open slot in the receiver for dirt in get in and jam the rifle. Also, you said the M16 jams when sand gets in the barrel. If that much sand is making its way from the end of the barrel into the chamber and action of the gun you have bigger problems than a jam, I.E. a bore obstruction. That's not the gun's fault. Its also false that you can clean an M14 much faster than an M16. In order to remove the bolt of an M14 you have to remove the action from the wood stock. On the M16 you just have to push out a captive pin to separate the upper and lower receivers. From your comment you sound like either a young kid or some old fudd perpetuating fuddlore. Considering this is RUclips, I bet you're younger, and so I would advise you to not believe myths over facts.

They did away with almost all the quonset huts, there were no sand buckets, swagger sticks, deep mud pits, and there was 'far less' hands on discipline by the DI's. In fact the only time I knew of rough housing, it cost one of my DI''s his campaign cover. But they still let loose with a constant barrage of colorful metaphors, and catching spit in your face was routine. I never stopped laughing during the first half of this movie in 1986.

    Full Metal Jacket had moments of comedy or divined as comedy probably in boot camp, however, I never experienced fun or comedy while in combat. Some combatants may have found something funny, however, I did not. It may be the type of combat I was in that was too chilling and adrenaline pumping to allow for a moment of comedy. For decades I did not watch movies about the Vietnam War. I had been there and did not need to see it on screen, and the vast majority of movies told stories only to make money and cared nothing for truth or accuracy. We Were Soldiers was accurate, however, the real battle was far more horrifying than the movie could depict.

The M14 is about two pounds heavier and has a more limited magazine capacity. The M14 has more power and effective range, but you can carry more rounds with an M16 and the M16 is more controllable in full auto mode. Civilians can buy semi-auto versions of both weapons. The M14 is still in service as a designated marksman rifle.

    I'm a trauma medic and have treated GSWs (gunshot wounds). The 5.56mm can be very damaging to tissue, but its effect is based on tumbling, which widens the wound channel, and on the shock wave produced by the high velocity. It is also effective if it fragments. However, there is no comparison to the enormous energy deposited in the target by a .308/7.62x51 vs. the much smaller 5.56. To be blunt, both will kill you - but the larger round will do it faster/more-reliably, and it isn't even close.

    In the late 1950s, US Marines were categorised at three levels of shooting ability, according to the scores they achieved at a standardised test of their accuracy:
    Expert: a score of 220 to 250.
    Sharpshooter: 210 to 219.
    Marksman: 190 to 209.
    In December 1956, after a very intensive 3 weeks’ training period Lee Oswald scored 212: two marks above the minimum for a ‘sharpshooter’.

    I agree. The 7.62NATO is a full rifle shell and it was conceived to replace the larger cased .30-06, which it actually did fairly well.
    Both of these .30cal service rounds are great even today, for their range and stopping power. But considering the nature of most engagements being close quarter & urban, the 5.56NATO is better suited for the task (no energy loss or tumble due to range).
    For me, personally, I still prefer the full rifle shell 7.62NATO.

The difference in the M14 and M16 are it's caliber among others. A civilian can buy Semi-Automatic variants of the M16 and M14, although both are labled differently from it's military counterpart.

Hunting rifles are chambered in rounds like .270, .308, .30-06, or even .410 or far greater, which are SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful then small calibre rifle cartridges like the .223, in the AR-15 Rifle. Automatic rifles and explosives are very rarely used in crimes. Handguns attribute to a bulk of gun violence statistics.

    One of the most important scenes of the movie and the key to understand the two parts of it.
    The scene shows that Hartman is a fair Drill Sergeant after all. Pile is "outstanding" at shooting. He could have become a sniper if he hadn't killed himself (which does not make sense really because he does it after he has passed the boot camp).
    Pile would have made a good sniper. And what does the platoon lack when they get under fire by a sniper? See. Here's the bridge.

    • @stevekaczynski3793

    • @sonofsparda657
      @sonofsparda657 Год назад

      @@stevekaczynski3793 he isnt insane, he snapped. Big difference, insanity would imply you have a mental issue that makes you "abnormal" and hinders you from leading a normal respectfull life. Leonard was broken and instead of getting cameradery from his platoon he gets "disciplined" he was left in a place where it felt like literally nobody cared about him. The only "friend" he had who treated him SOMEWHAT normally, joker, was forced to choose that one night, while pyle was strapped to the bed. Now i am aware pyle was also aware of the situation since joker was forced to choose on the spot and didnt want to go through with it at first but chose to do so against his better judgement to save his ass from the bigger mob. Which i personally feel like is one of (if not the only reason) pyle let him walk off after he killed gunny. But what im saying is he was a fairly normal individual at first, maybe not the brightest, but a decent person i would assume. The thing that made him go postal was the constant belittlement, ridicule and parading of his mistakes, and when that didnt make him improve it was suggested he get "disciplined" by his fellow soldier by making everyone else bear his punishment. Now imagine you have some dude youre not allowed to talk back to scream and shout abuse at you all day and instead of getting support from your peers you get further punished by them. I think it is fairly important to also say, he pocketed the ammo during this scene, meaning he didnt just decide after bootcamp he was gonna off himself, the whole thing was planned beforehand, the only thing that just doesnt really add up for me is "was he only gonna off himself and just capped hartmann because he was just there and he seized the moment, or was he planning on luring hartmann into the bathroom to kill him THROUGH the nightguard of the current night"
      (also yes i know an insanity plea exists where its basically "temporary insanity" but c´mon... thats having a meltdown or "snapping", actual INSANITY is doing the exact same FUCKING thing over, and over again.....expecting, shit to change... i had to)
