  • You'd think with satellite technology there wouldn't be anymore uncharted islands, yet Nathan Drake managed to find like 5 of them or so over the years.

It turns out Drake's real fortune was that weird subway advert.
Between this and the The Last of Us MP video, there is a danger of this turning into a Naughty Dog channel. Thank God there's no reason I'll be looking at them again anytime soon...
Next game is for freaks, by freaks, unless the Emperor decrees otherwise.

Uncharted 1 existed in that small period of time where having amazing graphics, cinematic presentation, and wild production value led to people being forgiving of pretty much everything else.

@@Aladelicouslol that's what I'm saying? Why are GOW and TLOU2 so well received if that period ever ended. It's not because they're good games.

"Comfort food" is a great term for games like this. You can admit it's not great but that doesn't stop you from taking another bite.
I remember the hype about the game back then, and being surprised at how simple it turned out to be once I finally saw it. Definitely a character-driven game - and, honestly, I'd rather take great characters in an average game than the other way around.

I'm becoming acutely aware that writing in games really matters. A good game can be really dragged down by bad story and for some reason modern games have really been slacking there.

Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite games, everything bad in the first game is fixed(not the hand to hand combat that is awful in both games) and the story is so much better. After i played all the games i returned to the first one but just could'nt. Great video btw congrats.

I know it looks weird but... am I the only one who thinks this movement looks kinda neat? I mean yeah it looks absolutely unnatural on a character model that's trying to look as realistic as possible for the time but those exaggerated movements would look fun on something else.

Pacing can make up for a lot of the mistakes a game has. The sucky bits never last too long, and are often used well as downtime. The worst parts of the game dont overstay their welcome, even if it would be preferable for them not to exist in the first place.
A well paced shitshow is something that a lot of people would like. I dont have a good example for games, but for any weebs out there that is exactly what chainsaw man is. An incredibly well paced B movie, in manga form.
While pacing isnt often focussed on in analysis, usually its the more interesting things to talk about like themes and such, it at least for me is the number one thing when it comes to enjoyment. A movie like hackers is amazing despite being a 2 out of 10 in actual quality, because despite its shortcomings, it never stops, it never questions itself, and that works well for a feature length film. It never slows, allowing you to stop and go "wow this really is shit", it just keeps throwing shit at you.
I do think that is the main thing. What is pulling you through the experience is the pacing. You can have all the intrigue in the world about something, but if you get overloaded with information or are given it too sparcely, the experience will be worse, even if the story behind it is something genuinely amazing and worth telling.

I find your use of Tarzan music from Kingdom Hearts amusing.
I loved all the Uncharted games when I played them. As the years pass and upon revisiting a few times, I dislike them more and more. I played The Last of Us after Uncharted 4 and I was shocked at how layered TLOU was compared to U4. Uncharted feels so weightless and without any real bite compared to the gameplay and story of TLOU.

The original trilogy won't ever make it to PC because they were directed by Amy Hennig, who is no longer at the company after a falling out. The current top brass at Naughty Dog despise her and putting her games on PC means she would be up for royalties, which is something they would never do. You can thank the egotistical Neil Druckmann for this.

23:44 - I can probably answer this. Sony's losing money due to the supply shortage debacle that's gone on thanks to Covid, and can't make nearly enough PS5's to reach demand for them, so they've been having to release a bunch of their newer exclusive games on other platforms to make up for it (hence why the latest Spiderman games and the two new God of War ones are also on there). However Sony's also got that old money mindset where they want to only do exclusives as their form of competition against other companies like Microsoft (who have long since seen where the wind is blowing and have ported stuff over much sooner), so the only stuff so far that's been ported are new games rather than old ones. Although it could also have something to do with their really shitty "we aren't backporting our consoles anymore to play old games" decision they made when they released the PS4.
Sony could make a ton of money releasing their older games onto PC, and save themselves from becoming Sega 2.0 and completely losing the console race altogether. But because they're so stubborn they aren't going to. There's going to come a time maybe within or even before the next decade is over where we start comparing them with Detroit at the rate that they keep making these bad, backwards business decisions.

My cousin and I continuously rag on Uncharted 1. It plays like shit, is written like shit, and while looking very pretty and exotic and what-not, doesn't really do much with its sets. We debate whether the best is 2 (me) or the Lost Legacy (my cousin) but we can both agree that Drake's Fortune sucks ass. Especially the fucking jet ski bits. Besides, Nate plays like he's slathered in baby oil in 1.

    • @locklear308
      @locklear308 Год назад +7

I mean there is a difference between hard/challenging and just being stupid. Plus, a lot of games make things "harder" purely by just ramping up health and damage... which is just lazy and stupid. Actually changing the enemies and AI to be better is what "hard" should be about.
