The basic rule of Yielding the Right of Way is that if two vehicles arrive at a 4-way-stop intersection at the exact same time, then the vehicle on the right gets to go first. The vehicle on the left is yielding the right of way to the vehicle on their right. In this video, we look at some of the other situations that commonly come up at 4-way intersections, and who has the right of way.
The “yielding right of way” term confuses me. I thought it meant the person on your right goes first? But in the video he states whoever gets at the intersection first makes the first move.
@@QueenYemithat’s only prevalent on whether or not an intersection is full. in general terms it’s whoever gets there first goes, but also depending on if cars are turning or staying straight or carrying big loads, sometimes it changes on the vehicle to the right of you or just whoever feels like moving cuz they’re ignorant and in a rush.

Lisa, I'm really glad it helped! You're definitely not alone in being unsure about how to yield the right of way...that's pretty common. Good luck on your driver's test whenever you do take it.

She got mad at me for turning (right), right after da 1st car n claim dat she has da right of way. No accident but she war enraged. Thank u for making dis vid
I have been driving now with my permit for a while, I have around 31-33 hours. I feel almost ready to test..but these intersections and yeilds..really..confuse me. Thankfully around where I travel to and live there are not a lot of them, at least without traffic lights. This video cleared up so much stuff for me man..thank you so much.
I'm glad it helped...I appreciate you taking the time to watch it. I like that you're watching videos to learn more about safe driving skills, and because of that and the initiative it shows, I'm sure you'll do great on your test. Take care!
these are helping me so much. i failed my first test in december and it completely wrecked my self esteem (to be fair i didnt practice much) but watching stuff like this makes me really hopeful for my next one. february 27th!!! 🤞
One thing I want to know is: When you say “the person who got there first” do you mean the person that got in the line first or who actually got to the stop sign first because there’s sometimes lines before the intersection
That means the person that stopped at the stop sign (or the white stop line if there is one) first is the one that should go first before other vehicles arriving close to the same time. A white stop line takes precedence over the stop sign and determines where your actual stopping point will be. It doesn’t matter when you got in a line leading up to the intersection, only when you arrived and stopped at the sign or line controlling the intersection.
Great explanation, coming from England to Canada I came across these kinds of intersection for the first time. In England, when you do have a four way intersection, they'll have traffic lights, every time. More often though, there'll be a roundabout instead, which effectively acts like a three way junction but smoother because you don't have to come to a complete stop if there's no one approaching from your right. With the density of traffic in England I couldn't possibly imagine these working there without bringing everything to a halt (which is presumably why we don't have any), but now that I know about these, I'll be better able to handle them in Canada!
Roundabouts are safer than 4-way stops, and I wish there were more around us. We have a few in bigger cities, but not enough overall in my opinion. Thanks for watching and for leaving the great comment, and enjoy Canada!
Thank you so much sir..I understand that very well..I search many videos here but I didn’t got what I want ..But In you video I got my thing what I want..You deserve more subscribers and likes 😘😘👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hi! I have had my license for a little while now, and I have moved to a place that has a lot of four way stops. I find myself very nervous at them because it seems like the cars around me are going even though it's my turn- especially if I stop for a few seconds. Any advice?
Since there are a lot of four way stops in your area, the local driver's there may have become very impatient with having to stop so often so they don't wait like they should. And, if people are in that much of a hurry, just let them go. When you get to the stop sign that controls you, make a full and complete stop, but don't linger if it's your turn to go. Other driver's take any hesitation as a sign that you want them to go ahead and go. Make sure you scan the intersection ahead of you as you're driving up to your stop sign, and pay close attention to who is arriving ahead of who so you'll be prepared to leave the stop sign when it's really your turn. But if someone leaves when it's not their turn, don't take it personally or let it get you upset or mad. Driving angry is dangerous to you and those around you, and it's just not worth it.
I went from panicking halfway through the video, and by the end I was like "Oh, yielding isn't as scary as I thought it was!" But I wish people wouldn't roll right through the stop signs
Thanks for sharing. In the video it can be seen that if a vehicle came to the stop sign and the other vehicle on the other side is still rolling towards their stop line, then the first vehicle waits until the rolling vehicle appears to stop. -- Sometimes I have seen people moving from STOP line if they arrive first and the other vehicles on other sides are slowing down but yet to reach the stop line. -- This makes me wonder if one should come to complete stop, wait and see other cars coming to a stop as well, and then proceed to their turn?
Moments like on 7:55 are the most confusing for me, cuz I come from a country where we just use "the right rule" And in the North America I will need to adapt a bit... Thanks for an awesome guide
Wow this helped me a whole bunch, thank you SO much 🙌 Edit actually I do have a question though, does yielding mean that if its your turn to go then your signaling to the other drivers when it's your turn? Unless you are going straight
You do need to use your signals if you'll be turning right or left, and otherwise you just let other drivers go before you (yield to them the right to go before you do} if they arrived at the intersection before you did. In the event you arrive at the same time as another driver, the person to the right gets to go first, so in that case, the driver on the left would yield the right of way to the driver to their right.
If four people arrive at the same time there’s also a good chance someone is turning right in which case they get right-of-way because they won’t cross paths with anyone
Normally it means that anybody entering from any side has to yield to anyone already in the roundabout. Enter when there is a gap and it’s safe to do so. Roundabouts have actually been proven to be safer than 4-way stop intersections, causing fewer accidents!
VisualxxKhaos That works like any normal roundabout. Yield to any cars already in the roundabout. When it’s clear and you can enter the roundabout, go. All other cars have to wait on the side roads. If you come at the same time as someone to your right, the person on the right goes first, just like with a 4 way stop. If 2 cars approach on opposite sides of the intersection, with a roundabout both cars can usually enter the roundabout at the same time and complete their maneuvers as they are in opposite sides of the circle. The most important thing to remember is to yield to any cars currently in the roundabout, then take your turn when there is a gap in traffic in the circle
Why do so many people think they can turn left in front of a person going straight through the intersection? So much road rage comes from this and lots of bad accidents. Sometime I think it’s a case where someone thinks they arrived a fraction of a second before the person going straight but again that just creates a lot of issues in my opinion.
A lot of people really don't understand the rules for yielding at a 4-Way stop. And others just don't act like they don't apply to them. So always proceed through a 4-Way intersection with caution when there are other vehicles arriving at about the same time. You're responsible for doing what you know is correct...just watch out for those that aren't doing the right thing for whatever reason!
I'm 42 and have been driving since I was 16, but yesterday I came to a 4 way stop with stop signs where I pulled up at the same time as 2 other cars. Very rare scenario for me. I was sitting there with my left turn signal on for a while, and the other drivers were just sitting there. I was waiting for them to go. I didn't want them to honk at me, and I was pretty intimidated. Nobody was behind me, so I backed up and turned around so they could all go and I could try again. Came back to the intersection and another car pulled up across from me at the same time. Again, my left turn signal was on, didn't really know what to do, didn't want them honking/getting angry, and I was waiting for them to go but they were just sitting there. Nobody was behind me so I backed up and turned around to try a third time. (No I'm not an idiot/stupid, I have a 124 IQ.)
That's always an awkward situation to be in when no one knows for sure who should go first. In your first situation, one of the three cars at the intersection was the farthest one to the right of the others and should have gone first. In a case like that where the person that's supposed to go first doesn't actually go, then you could give them a hand wave to signal them to go ahead and proceed. If they still don't, then the person next to them should go, being next in line. But if no one makes a move, it's okay for you to inch out slowly and then go on your way. It's not rude to go ahead and go after you've given the other driver(s) the opportunity. In the second instance, although you both arrived at the same time, and assuming the other vehicle was going to go straight, they would have the right-of-way since you would be turning across their path if you went first. In case of two vehicles arriving at the same time across from each other, the one turning left should yield to the one going straight. But I know in a real-world situation that it's not always that cut and dried, and if you're not sure when to go, try to signal the other drivers to go on and take their turn. And if they don't go, then it's perfectly fine for you to be the one to go...just ease out slowly.
Nice video, thanks. I live in Florida, we have stop-sign-controlled intersections where 4 lanes (left & right turns with 2 thru lanes) cross similarly laid out 4 lane roads. It is absolute pandemonium. Plus, nobody follows any of the basic rules. I hate these dangerous roadway messes; they need to be replaced with circles. Also, you should address what to do when your vision of cross traffic is obscured from the location of the stop sign or stop line.
Dear Stan, Thank you for your very helpful video. Can you please explain the situation at 5:45? The car opposite you wants to turn left, so shouldn't you have priority over it? Also, why did you not yield right of way to the red car, which was to your right? Thank you very much in advance, I am driving my first car tomorrow and I am freshening up on my Right of Way knowledge. :)
The first rule about the Right of Way is that whoever arrives at the intersection first, regardless of their position related to you, gets to proceed first. And if there were three other vehicles that also came to that intersection slightly after you did, then whoever arrived 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, gets to go in order after that. Although this clip in the video doesn't show it, the car opposite me had arrived at the intersection and stopped before I arrived and stopped, so they got to go before I did. The car to the right of me had arrived and stopped after I got there, so I had the right to go before them. "First come - First served", is the main rule at an intersection...if you get to the intersection first before other vehicles, you get to proceed before they do. The other rules only apply when two or more vehicles arrive at the exact same time at a 4-way stop. In that case, whoever is to the farthest right goes first, and so on according to the other situational guidelines. It can be a little complicated, that's for sure, but remember that if you get to the intersection before any of the other vehicles, you get to proceed first, whether they're on your right or on your left. If you arrived at the exact same time that a vehicle to your right did, they get to go before you do. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please ask!
Thanks for this! Question, if I'm at a traffic light and I'm turning left on a green light, and the person opposite me is turning right and they also have a green light, who has the right away? And in the same scenario what if the person turning right has a green light and also a yield sign, does that make a difference?
If you both have a green and you both arrive at the intersection at the same time, the person opposite you turning right would have the right of way. If the person turning right has a yield sign, they would have to yield to all other traffic and wait on you to turn first before making their turn.
Yeah but you still need to be careful. If say you’re turning left and he’s turning right and you’re both in the intersection, you should ONLY turn left if you can see what’s coming behind him. If it’s a van for example, it may be hard to see. You can move slightly over to the left to see when you’re entering the intersection. If that’s not possible, I’d let him go first until you can see behind for approaching traffic. I’d you don’t do this, you can get T Boned. It’s the worst crash for you!
3:16In the intersections arrive same The vehicle on the rigth has right of way 3:32 Vehicles arrive same time a you directly cross each other, but if go straight and the other turning you have the right of way
You forgot to mention that if all 4 cars arrive at an ALL WAY STOP at the exact same time (although unlikely), right of way is given to the vehicle to your right
When you're able to move forward, you would complete your stop at the stop sign or stop line, and then proceed if no one else was at the intersection, or if you had stopped before other drivers. If there were other vehicles at any of the other stop signs, you would have to wait for your turn if they had made their stops before you did. If you're behind someone, your opportunity to go doesn't start until after you've pulled up and stopped, and then you're controlled by the first-come/first-serve rule.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (air carpet target dish off jeans toilet sweet piano spoil fruit essay). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Hi Stan, at 5:45 wasn't that left turning car supposed to yield to you? Because you were going straight and I thought usually left turners yield to straight ways.
It doesn't show it in the video because of how I edited it, but the other driver had actually arrived at the intersection before I did. So by the rule of "whoever gets there first has the right to proceed first", I had to yield the right of way to the driver turning left.
3:14 there is no additional tag saying that it's actually a 4-way stop, and it can potentially be a 2-way stop where FIFO doesn't work. How I can quickly conclude here which stop Im dealing with without looking at what sign people from other lanes have? Thanks.
The basic rule of Yielding the Right of Way is that if two vehicles arrive at a 4-way-stop intersection at the exact same time, then the vehicle on the right gets to go first. The vehicle on the left is yielding the right of way to the vehicle on their right. this like truly helped. thank u
Really glad to hear that! Thanks for watching.
Very useful video
Thanks a lot for watching!
dont forget the overly polite drivers that meet at four way
On thumbnail there's a 60's yield sign
An oldie but a goodie!
You're welcome! Thank you very much for watching.
Dear Stan,
Thank you for your very helpful video.
@@HowSkills Perfectly clear! Thank you for your time and the explanation, have a good day. :)
@@HowSkills You da man Stan, thank you!
You just gained a new subscriber in me😀
Awesome! I really appreciate that!
3:16In the intersections arrive same The vehicle on the rigth has right of way
3:32 Vehicles arrive same time a you directly cross each other, but if go straight and the other turning you have the right of way
You forgot to mention that if all 4 cars arrive at an ALL WAY STOP at the exact same time (although unlikely), right of way is given to the vehicle to your right
But that means everyone has a car in there right?
Thank You
You're welcome, and thank you for watching!
If you're reading this God bless you ❤
And the same to you, Adithya Naren! I hope this video helped you.
I like it when approaching intersection and vehicle opposite of me slams their brakes like 20 feet from the stop line and jumps the right of way.
Yeah, I see that all the time! Very irritating.
What do you do if you are behind someone? Do you go last?
When you're able to move forward, you would complete your stop at the stop sign or stop line, and then proceed if no one else was at the intersection, or if you had stopped before other drivers. If there were other vehicles at any of the other stop signs, you would have to wait for your turn if they had made their stops before you did. If you're behind someone, your opportunity to go doesn't start until after you've pulled up and stopped, and then you're controlled by the first-come/first-serve rule.
Literally the best video on RUclips
Thanks a lot for watching!
Thank you!
You’re welcome...I hope it was of some help!
I just started driving in the USA so difficult to understand everything as a reflex function of time
It can be hard to get used to driving in this country, but I know you will do well. Take care and drive safe.
Thanks 😊🙏
Thank you for watching!
You don’t complete 🛑 STOPS, many times- Your only mistake 😅
Watch out then I'm coming through move over 😂😂 hahaha 🤣🤣🤣😮
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (air carpet target dish off jeans toilet sweet piano spoil fruit essay). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
Hmmmm....I'm all out of ideas on that one! Do whatever you did the last time.
Thanks.
Sorry, but yes, all these were 4-way stops.
