  • I finally made this highly requested video on what it's like working in tech in Singapore.
    NOTE: this video is mostly geared towards potential expats with careers in tech looking to move to Singapore from overseas. Additionally, due to covid19, things are rapidly changing. What I say in this video may be changed in a couple of days or weeks.
    1:05 - landscape of current job market affected by covid19
    2:57 - landscape of labour market and competition
    3:36 - my general observations on tech companies in SG
    5:31 - there's a lot of tech job opportunities
    6:02 - growing interest of startup investments, deeptech, and search for tech talent
    8:02 - job market is struggling to keep up with fast pace of tech
    9:14 - my own personal experience in tech and my learnings
    12:58 - why I love working in Singapore
    I give a general overview of the labour market, the competition, my frank and honest opinion on my personal experience, and what observations around startups/tech companies I see in Singapore. It's a growing tech hub, and this is just the beginning.
    Please let me know in the comments below what other type of videos you'd like me to speak on regarding tech.

      Thanks Jay! Yes, covid has definitely shaken things up, but not to worry - I still believe there will be many opportunities for overseas talent to come in..you'll just have to be patient while covid cases are handled here.

    In Silicon Valley, it's a result orientated environment as compared to working in Singapore from my experience. Even when I was in working in Oregon and Minnesota, it was more laid back.
    Was headhunted to work in Pennsylvania in one of the research facility but didn't take up due to some other commitments.
    Another offers came in a couple of years back to work and develop unmanned factories concept in Arizona, Texas.
    My personal opinion is go with an open mind. You will never know what is ahead.

    • @TheFangGirl

      I agree - I am moving forward in my career with an open mind, but have parameters and certain work cultures I seek out at companies I apply for.

    8:26 if it's so hard for them to hire, they should increase the monthly salary from 9k a month to 13k - 14k a month to attract silicon valley devs. 10k - 12k after tax is ideally what senior developers should actually be earning in singapore if it is aligned to the rest of the world.

    How easy/hard would it be to find a nice paying job with a PhD in AI working as a Machine Learning Engineer? How tough is the competition and what how high/low is the need for this kind of job in your opinion? I heard that there is supposed to be a swarm of Indian IT workers recently, is it true?

  • @arwenmegan

    Work-life balance is one the things I am mindful about when I am seeking for a career change. I am at the stage in my life where there is more to life than making seven figures. Question, would you know if marketing or product positioning is in demand in Singapore?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +1

      Same, that's exactly where I'm at now. Hmm, I can generalize, but I do think that general marketing/product marketing is still in demand in SG - even more so for B2B software services.

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +1

      If Covid was NOT a factor and you could freely fly to Singapore for onsite interviews, then yes, you should come to Singapore. That's the best part of tech onsite interviews: those free flights and hotel stays!! That will allow you to experience Singapore from your own lens, meet your potential team in person, and get a feel of what the expat lifestyle could look like for you.

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  2 года назад

      That depends-if you're willing to break ties with the company that employs you, you can jump ship if you already found another company who has sponsored and secured your new working visa. General recommendation is a year, but you can decide on shortening the timeframe if you're really unhappy

    Loved this video! Do you know if foreign students can get internships in SG?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +1

      YES! Look into the Work Holiday Pass - it allows qualified foreign students to intern in Singapore for a period of up to 6 months (or 12 months if the student is from Australia). This is the most flexible pass as it does not have a cap to the amount of hours an intern can work. A WHP has a quota of 2,000 applicants at any one time: sleek.com/sg/resources/internship-and-student-visas-in-singapore/
