      Congrats on the offer! You should be proud of yourself. Tbh, there's no use worrying about the potential of your EP getting rejected since your fate now lies in their hands. Normally it's a few weeks to a month, but hope you get notified sooner.

    I'm a mechanical engineer with about 10 years work experience and I've bounced around a bit and also gained experience as a ui/ux deisnger working both for myself as an entrepreneur and some other metal works fabrication companies here in Nigeria.
    I would.like to explore partnering with anyone in singapore in setting up a green energy production firm with target markets in Africa. Nigeria in particular since the government is going to deregulate that industry very soon. Whee can I go to network and secondly, I would.like ti come through your route by first coming into the country, cuz I believe in the boots on the ground approach as this pits me up close and infront of prospects. What can of jobs can I do to sustain myself first before doing what I really came for. Thanks

    Hi Em!
    Thank you for sharing an inside perspective on Singapore. For someone deciding where to spend the next few year of his life, your info is enormously helpful!
    Can you give an update on the tech salary range for devs and data scientists in Singapore post-COVID?
    Salary information on Glassdoor fluctuates wildly. I have 2-3 yr exp in data science. Based on online info, the average annual salary varies from 70k to 140k annually.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    I don't want HR to toss my CV into the bin because of unrealistic salary expectations. Nor do I want to be jaded after finding out I could have asked for 25% more and still got the job.
    Much appreciated!
    Bokai

    Hi Emily, thanks for the info. They are incredibly helpful! I am curious that as a person not from engineer background, how do you get yourself familiar with the tech knowledge/terms etc from scratch?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  2 года назад +1

      Start with reading tech news, such as tech crunch, Tech in Asia, e27, or anything that talks about the tech space to familiarize yourself. You should become knowledgeable about the industry vertical if you want to get into it. You can also look into networking events or communities to start meeting people in the space. Try lunchclub.ai as well-that’s an online remote networking platform where many techies are on.

    What is the Singapore tech job market like now? Are there jobs available for foreigners/Americans anymore? Is it worth applying?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +1

      Aw thank you! It's picking up, but many of the roles are for Singaporeans only. That being said, there are still roles that are available for foreigners/Americans, but many are for middle management, director, and executive levels. I would definitely look at bigger companies who have the budget and are hiring in Q1 2021.
      I would still apply because if you don't try, it's an automatic no. But definitely check with the company beforehand if they can hire an expat so you don't waste your time.

    from your experience, do you you need a university degree to get a job and move to singapore as an expat? or is having multiple years of experience enough?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +2

      That's tough. I do believe Singapore gvt looks at everything in totality, but I did have to send a copy of my diploma and list my university, as well as any honor programs I was in. Years of experience is great. This is my shot in the dark, but I do think that marquee brands will help you elevate your resume when coming to Singapore--they want to see what you can bring to the workforce here and why they would bring in another expat than give the job to a local.

    I currently am working for a fintech startup that is based in Singapore (I'm not based in SG). In the long term, I would like to be working in Singapore. I have made it known to my managers (based in SG) that I would like to take on a bigger responsibility e.g upcoming projects for career growth. I have seen a lot of people's profiles. It seems that everyone has some sort of professional certification but do they really play a role to get a job? Do you have any advice on my current position?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +2

      I don't have a professional certification (just a bachelor degree) and I was able to get an employment pass bc of my startup experience. You have to have an edge and some sort of niche skillset to bring to Singapore - that is important in having a case of coming to SG. I would still try if I were you and transfer to Singapore bc it's a thriving space, especially within fintech. Do you have colleagues who moved overseas with the fintech startup?

    • @KenWorkProduction
      @KenWorkProduction 3 года назад

      @@TheFangGirl I see, it's been a year since I graduated college. The works getting repetitive (I enjoy it! but I'm not sure how that will set me for a niche skillset other than taking on a bigger responsibility). I have not had any colleagues who moved overseas. However, I'm well aware there were supposed to be roles filled in my country locally but ultimately those roles & people were moved to the SG office instead due to skills (Similar to what you've mentioned)

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  3 года назад +2

      @@KenWorkProduction You can start conversations with people at work and see if there's a chance your company would sponsor you to go. There has to be a business need for them too - I'd also recommend looking at other roles already open in Singapore to see if you can snag an interview to get a feel of what it's like. Tbh, I feel like those with more technical backgrounds would have a higher chance of finding a job here

      There's a list of work passes you can look at: www.mom.gov.sg/passes-and-permits
      If referring to the EP, it is harder to get since they also raised the salary minimum for candidates to earn at least $5,000 a month. The quota for hiring nationals and foreigners vary from sector to sector.

      You don’t want to try other fields? You are more skilled in a complicated field of work than alot of the talent coming from developed countries but it would be harder for you to get an EP or working visa as compared to them, it’s just how it is. It might be easier if you maybe open up to software engineering as that alone is less niche and just has more job listings instead and also go via outsourcing agencies, i know they take a cut but they really are the way for you. That is my experience with the lovely and talented engineering colleagues from india. That being said yes there are engineering roles in semicon companies in singapore if you’re really that good to be a firmware engineer or something like that, less competition as not many people know how to do it. And yes, listen to her take on networking, it may sound cliche or hand wavy to you but its totally true and either gained through her experience or a matter of her being more outgoing growing up in the states and so being cultivated to be more social comparatively, look where she is now. Requirements for engineers are much higher, and even more so for you either as a firmware engineer or being where you’re from if you want a pay package competitive to say someone from the usa, not because they automatically pay you less because of your country of domicile but that’s another matter altogether, so network and get on good terms with a recruiter.

    Is degree is mandatory in Singapore for software engineers ?

    • @TheFangGirl
      @TheFangGirl  Год назад

      It isn't mandatory, but as a foreigner, the government will definitely look at your college transcripts, where you went, and what experiences you had during your application process.
      For hiring companies:
      If you're competing for software engineers, but didn't have a degree, they will definitely want to see you have built projects/apps, went to hackathons, and have engineering experience. They will want to hire foreigners with 3+ years of experience
