Indeed, was quite an interesting time, I was there for all of it as well. I remember the day it got out. Almost overnight people started doing things that we would have never even thought of or imagined possible. A lot of us had fingers pointed at us assuming this was something of ours, but we weren't ones to promote hacks. The community was shown awfully quick the distinction between hacks and mods. Perhaps a bit of lesser known insight that I figure is well in the past enough by this point... We started figuring out how they were doing it, and started actually developing counterpatches on our own to try to help players prevent some of the oddly specific crashes these hackers were using. We also sent these patches to Nexon at the time as well as any info we could gather as to how certain packets were affecting the server (seen by just being within rendering range of such activity). They were likely not allowed to say much, and understandably so, but those crashes were soon fixed, and the rest of the hacks were rendered useless a few days later. We literally helped Nexon put this nonsense to bed. Truly strange times indeed.
It's crazy that you guys managed to out the hackers! Honestly didn't know about this lore and it's actually a super interesting layer to all of this! Thanks for sharing, your a true hero in my books :)
rare professor sighting in the wild! I actually was curious about how you guys fixed things and wound up asking Mike years later what the deal with all that was and I never would have expected what the issue actually was to have been the issue.
damn... i started mabi in 2008 and left for good in 2015. I remember seeing all the npcs dead by some hacker along time ago when i was around. Seeing this... it hits home O_O
I vividly remember my guild leader telling me and a few new players about these horror stories around a campfire sooo long ago. I didn't know how crazy it was until I saw this! The meteors sound straight out of an apocalyptic movie o.o
I was there when this happened, my group I played with ended up switching to other games and it was never the same after that. We did come back once it calmed down but afterwards it was never the same
I got to freely explore Filia as a Giant during this hack mainly because the elf guards were actually dead. To be fair, quests were also broken. But it was wild to explore the opposing town without getting shot at. Granted, I was logged out for most of the time to protect my account but it was insane what was going on.
Ah, I remember the blackrobe times...still got a character who's blackrobed to this day because they claim I did it myself. And I remember the days when they killed ALL NPCs...EVEN THE MAILBOXES.
I was sadly a victim if the black robe. I made another character trying to warn people whats going on. I was lucky my main character Lightwater was restored.
I remember the meteor spam. I didn't know what was going on myself, but I wished the dragon whistle that summoned those meteors that you get as a reward was just as powerful, lol.
There was the public version and then there was the non-public version (from elitepvpers). The non-public version was obviously the culprit of these serious problems of the time. Everyone was blaming the guild Martyr for the majority of these hacks and exploits. As for me...you really couldn't trust anyone even if you knew someone from that particular group. So it was best to stay logged off most of the time because it was so widespread. I would log on to complete events on other channels and then log off. But in late 2010(?)-2011 that was the year that Nexon really started to take an anti-modding/anti-hacking stance, because before it seemed like they either and/or didn't care or NA was SEVERELY ill-equipped to deal with these issues. That's what caused a lot of players to lose faith. They were just publishers and it would take weeks and sometimes months to implement any fixes procured from the Koreans. They couldn't do anything without KR's say so. A lot of players at the time suspected that there was some serious language barriers between NA and KR. It just seemed like they were not understanding us and their unsatisfactory copied pasted responses from NA to tickets made even more players rage out and quit. The forums were very entertaining back then. lol. Nexon went down in infamy as one of the worst gaming publishers of the time and that reputation continues to follow them and has evolved. I like to think things have immensely improved since those dark ages. Tickets are responded to within a couple days at the latest, where before they were ignored for years or auto-closed. That thankfully doesn't happen anymore. They actually had to scrap their old ticket and reporting system and start on a completely new one. Which is why if you were banned back then for whatever nefarious activities, you stand a decent chance of getting your old accounts back because there will be little reference or documentation to what you did back then that got you banned. lol. 😂
I think I started playing Mabinogi is 2009 or 2010 so I must have been on a break from the game during this hack. Late 2010 I was in the process of moving to another house and probably took a 2 or 3 year break from the game. So yeah, I probably just missed this big hacking problem cause I hear about it all the time but never remember experiencing it personally. When I first joined the game Gen 7 Secrets of Irinid came out cause I remember seeing the Secrets of Irinid log in screen back then. If this happened in 2011 then I joined shortly after Iria came out and was partly forced to take a break from the game cause of the move which resulted in just barely dodging this hacking problem. Which is both a good and bad thing I guess. Sure it is good I didn't get hacked but at the same time it is a memorable Mabinogi experience I missed out on. But I guess that logic is kind of crazy, imagine wishing you were at a store that was getting robbed cause you wanted to go through the experience 🤣Still a great video though, I do enjoy hearing the stories about this event.
Yup i was there. Was a kid that didn't take the game seriously. I saw a lot of people next to a tent and people were saying "don't go inside the tent." I got a exchange from someone and i accepted it because who doesn't love free stuff!?! Than my dumbass ended up in the tent. Was like... Okay.. i guess I'll just wait here or something. Nothing happened ao i left the tent than all my stuff was gone and i was in a black robe lol 😂 I got robbed!! It didn't mean much to me I thought it was funny but only because I didn't realize how serious it was.. I didn't take the game seriously but a lot of people did. So most of the people that I knew had left the game or stop playing for a few months until all this was fixed. I just started a new account and just never got inside a tent ever again. 😂

I remember weeks of no NPCs

Imagine this happening on ch1 dunby nowadays lol
i was there and almost got pulled to the dark side.
Were you thinking about using the hacks? 👀

filter check, my original comment got deleted and I think it was because I used the word that rhymes with rake.
I joined around this time... I remember hearing people being black robed
You got lucky that it didn't happen to you! Do you still play? :o
I was there, never understood the reason to ruin everyone's fun.

There was a time where they had to rollback the servers and they compensated people nx. I forgot for what reason though
