I'm in 9th grade now, and have been playing bassoon since 6th grade. This kid has beautiful tone, and probably plays better than I do. Amazing talent, he has a future in music ahead of him!
Yes, that kid plays quite well - beautifully, actually. But there's nothing saying that you can't play every bit as well as he does, if you set your mind to it. I've heard YOU crank out some pretty awesome songs during practice, and the more you play, the better you'll get, especially with the extra lessons you're taking. :)
Armando Eleazar this is a Concert in Mi minor (E minor), but this boy is not playing the full Concert, only the second and third movement. I am learning to play it too, I am 9th grade and I think that this is very soulful and emotional piece (Vivaldi is an amazing composer, all of his works make me motivated..) and this kid plays very well (Eh from 2009, now he is not a kid yet) Well done! :)
All the people saying how many times he messed up is ridiculous, he did an amazing job! I bet half of you can’t even play bassoon, it’s not an easy instrument to play. Hopefully he still plays because he would be sooooo good!.
Locktwiste72 As a bassoon player I can tell you that while the double Reed and thumb work can be hard, learning the bassoon is much easier than people make it out to be. However, taking lessons from a teacher (one that actually plays bassoon, not your band or orchestra director) is essential, because the double Reed is so easy to learn wrong.
It was really easy for me. You just have to make sure you got good reeds (handmade are best) and have a no-playing-around basson teacher really helped. If you are in school get a private lesson teacher because the band teachers don't help as much.Private lessons can get expensive and so can reeds but that will make a difference.
I agree with these guys, it's not hard to play or learn but the problem is that most teachers dont know how to play so you need to get private lessons. My music teacher has no Idea how to play the bassoon and doesn't even know the fingerings
What a fantastic present for your mother!!! I need to congratulated both of you, you for playing the instrument so well and your mum for producing a talented and fantastic musician
Wow, fantastic.... im 17 and also from Hawaii went to Moanalua high school played for 6 years and at 6 years still found it difficult (phrasing) but you, 2 years! I am thoroughly impressed! Please do the world a favor and keep playing. ~a fellow bassoonist
Beautiful work! It's also harder to play standing up (like most people do for a concerto) than it is sitting down like orchestral players do. The weight of the instrument is distributed very differently and if you haven't practiced a LOT in the new position, it can throw you off. Doesn't seem to here, though!
What is most crazy to me is how he can hold that thing up! As a bassoonist myself, (still new to it, not super good if I’m being honest) I can barely hold it up sitting! Can’t imagine what it must be like standing. Super impressive! The tone of the notes are very even and the tonguing is really smooth!
Its really inspiring and talented kid. My son has started doing Basoon resently and taking his grade 1. He was inspired by this video thanks for sharing and wish bloom your talent world wide!!
@bobperlman Your son is a truly gifted young man. I'm 16, and I am a bassoonist as well. I can tell you from experience and hearing other people play that it is rare to find young teens able to play with such good tone. The bassoon has such awkward fingerings, and is a difficult instrument. Tell him to stick with it, being a good bassoonist opens up so many doors considering the rarity of good bassoonists.
+Reeve Coble I play bassoon, clarinet, flute, and alto sax :) I'm hoping to pick up a french horn for christmas and I also want an oboe to learn on XD. I want to be a high school band director when I get older.
+Brainsicles If you learn a lot of instruments you will be an awesome band director. Your double reeds will be so happy to have someone who understands them, haha.
That was a great performance, love it,2nd mov was very touching and the 3rd was great too ,i'm glad to see so young instrumentist with such great skill,i play the basoon for 5 years but i think that this kid will surpace me any minute nuw:)),anyway, great performance,;)thumbs up.
Wow! Cool! I think this has been pointed out already, but to be that young and play that in tune on a bassoon, Bravo! Kids got a great ear. Great student and most definitely a great teacher.
lol, just came here cuz behind my window there is this musical house, where random people, with random instruments, and random amount of talent come every day to play their masterpieces all day long. 1 time even my country's 90s techno star came and it was actually epic to listen to.. Anyways.. i just wanted to check if i guessed correctly if the instrument playing today was a badly played bassoon, and so far it seems like it lol
I'm impressed of the level this kid is playing at, but let's think about this for a moment. How many kids his age are genuinely this determined to do something? Not many would be the most probable answer. The odds of him being forced to practice and have lessons are quite high, especially if this kid is coming from a family where this sequence basically happened. "Mum, a bassoon isn't a brasswind instrument." "Yes it is." "Buy me one and I'll prove it." I always find myself feeling bad for these prodigious kids, just because the odds of the instrument they play being forced upon them is much higher than magically being able to play.
Thank you James I’m 60 so enjoyed your music . Perhaps you will become a Martin Frost in your time. ! Play it better play it with style. Your mum is proud 🇦🇺👍
Practice, practice, practice. That's really all there is to it, especially for double reed instruments. Good luck to you! -Bassoon player for 8 years here
Jackie Faith I'm also, a 15 year old bassoon player, but I played oboe beforehand, and the practice I had using high air pressure significantly helps my tone. So, basically, use lots of air. (Also make sure you get handmade reeds, not the store bought pieces of crap)

It’s really sad a lot of people don’t even know what bassoons are

It just brings joy to my heart to see such young talent. Excellent performance.

I don’t wanna seem rude, but the baritone saxophone is one of the four most popular saxophones...
