As a Q400 Pilot I can ensure you, we love flying this thing, we hate it, but we love it ;) and it flys really well, the systems and the way they are put into the plane are more the issue here ;) And if you do it right, it lands pretty neat
Never worked on these but did lotta work on crj 200, 700, and 900. Its pretty much an crj but with turbo props. Crj is a well built very safe aircraft but require hell of lot maintenance lotta things break constantly. I used to work for a regional carrier now I work for a major and was surprised to find how little maintenance large aircraft require. Not talking about scheduled maintenance im talking about system and structural failures. Most the unscheduled maintenance i do these days is broken junk in the cabin, seats, overhead bins, clogged sinks, ext.
I was a real life captain on the Q400 and it was probably my favourite airplane that I ever flew. Very fast for a turboprop and amazing landing performance. Taking this from YUL to YTZ was awesome on those flap 35 landings. It is true that it is a hard plane to land smoothly that's for sure, that's why the nickname it the crash 8. My trick for landing smoothly was to come in 10 knots above ref (which is the recommended technique) and adding a bit of power in the flare. If you're in a situation where you can't come in above ref speed (short runway or something like that) then it's pretty hard to land smoothly. Still, was an awesome plane! Jets are overrated, I don't know why but I'm a turboprop lover! Twin otter is probably my all time favourite plane ever! but the q400 is a beast of a turboprop :) also I can't remember but I think the tail strike attitude on landing is like 8 degrees, so if you're screwing up your landing, don't pull up! add power!
Living under the approach and about 5 km from the threshold of rwy 16 at YCD I love the constant parade of both WJ Q400 and the Jazz 200/300 over my head every day. No joke about those Q's hauling ass, either. They push you back in the seat pretty hard on takeoff...
I flew on a Dash-8 with air inuit. The whole thing was vibrating like it was about to tear itself apart and the noise was quite something when both props resonate together. Interesting experience and very capable planes perfect for the north but jets are way more comfortable :P I don't remember the landing being rough so the pilot did a great job. They actually go up and down Quebec's west coast stopping at various inuit villages like a bus so they get tons of landing practice everyday.
I flew with the Dash 8 more often, in Kenya with Jambojet and Silverstone. They were nice, comfortable flights, especially from Mombasa to Nairobi along the Tanzania border with a view of Klimanjara at sunset, amazing.
As an actual Q400 First Officer I have to say it is not as bad as you describe it. Landings are a challenge , but the key is power. Do not cut the power until main gear ground contact. As you said, it is not an airbus. If you idle at 20 feet with Max RPM you will feel it most definetely. Power on is the cheat;)

Funny that I personally know 6 Bombardier Q400 pilots and they all love it. Perhaps that's the difference between them flying the actual aircraft compared to your opinion using a flight simulator.
I have seen a 2 screens long rant of a Q400 pilot on Reddit. It seems (in nutshell) they have problems with the ergonomic of the cabin and the weak brakes. And that their company policy was keeping the wipers horizontal and that is terribly noisy.
As a Q400 pilot, this is the best airplane I have ever flown. It’s a turboprop with a jet performance. It has an amazing performance. The cockpit is very intuitive. Love it. And by the way, all pilots that I know that fly the 400 love it.
Yeah, the clue is to fly it to the runway and have power on the engine until the main gear touches the ground and then pull the throttle. Fun shit to fly when you do it right!
The idea of having a pilot test an unfamiliar aircraft is thrilling and dangerous. In civil aviation, this is considered unsafe. However, using a simulator allows for entertaining and unconventional scenarios. This can be further amplified with unscripted audio content and editing techniques. Bravo, as flashy as it is unedifying, you've made a gonzo epic.
I heard from the q400 pilots in my company that the q in q400 actually stands for quiet. There is microphones located in the cabin and those are used for noise cancelling.

The bottom line is you fly the wing at high speed to the runway level it and cut the power. As a passenger coming into Sonoma County Airport on Alaska (they now fly Embraer 175) the Q400 was fine as I have been on many and would rather be on that or a Embraer or a A220 before making a longer trip for a larger plane like a max No Thanks. The Embraer is stiff (not much give in the wings) so a little sharp in turbulence) but much quieter and more room.
Pre-COVID, all three major canadian airlines flew the Q400 into my hometown of Thunder Bay. I fly a lot for work - so I've probably done over 200 flights on a Q400. But now Air Canada flies their rouge A321 instead - it shaved half the flight time to Toronto haha I miss flying the Q400 - the vibrations put me to sleep every time; but I only fly AC, so I have to stick to the sardine-packed rouge jet.

Another cool turbo prop is the L-188 Lockheed Electra. They were built back in the 50’s originally for passenger use but today, they are now used for cargo use and fire fighting. A company that my dad is a boss at, owns a bunch of them that fight fires all over Canada and sometimes the states. They’re pretty cool, you should check them out! Nice video btw
It falls out of the sky because most newbs including myself until recently go full idle over the piano keys. The q400 likes to merge with the runway if that makes sense, a little above idle to wheels touchdown, light flare, is the hard thing to master. I also struggle to land this smooth in Xplane. I guess the problem is that the Engines blow the air over the wings. Which means that it feels like it drops out of the sky if you put the engine to idle a little to early.
Plane is beautiful to fly I flew it for a year 😊 it’s very powerful and never use reverse just disc, it can be tricky to land but gets the skills up, f15 easier than f35
You were really sucking it at the beginning but you fixed with all the crashing later and then the aircraft carrier steamed over the plane....awesome work.
I flew with the Q400 once or you could say twice to somewhere in India ,when we landed my head almost hit the ceiling that was the WORST landing of my life well until now, it was so hard you can't even imagine
I have flown the DHC-8 q400 and I liked it it was small yes but it was comfortable the window seats are great by the engine and wing and gear but that’s my opinion
For airBaltic they have got a super good turboprop safety record (1 emergency and 0 crashes) and airBaltic does super smooth landings with this plane and the emergency was front the landing gear not coming out
This things gets airborne fast, but a little turbulence had people on my flight saying prayers. Also, despite the noise suppression, ees gonna do what turboprops do, which is destroy your hearing RIP
The Saabb 340 happens to be my favorite turbo prop. The ATR 72 comes in second, and the Q400 I absolutely hate. It is quite quiet in the cabin, however zero legroom.
Hmmm, is this a pilot's perspective or a sim gamer petspective ? Most Dash 8 pilots including myself love it, expecially the Q400. Not difficult to fly at all, but yes its challenging but not impossible to get a smooth landing. You're supposed to 'fly it on' with slight pitch up and close the throttles on touchdown, no big flare. Pilots hate the fact that you still have to press "ALT-SEL" after selecting an altitude, and cabin is noisy only if the Cabin Active Noise Suppression system fails (it happens). Its not the most popular turboprop now, likely thats ATR, but its a much better turboprob despite its age.

I Love The Q400. It’s Like The Best Turboprop I've Been On. I Flew On The Atr 72-600 and 500 Too. The Q400 Was The First Plane I Flew On In 2015 When I Was 4. So This Plane Gets A Special Place In My Heart.
Swiss001: *says goddamnit*
Christian and Catholic people: say sike right now
I live in Montreal where the bombardier is born here bombardier manufactures planes in Montreal. My cousin works there too.

Niagara Falls: am I a joke to you?
Slowly I turn, step by step.
Yes
I also struggle to land this smooth in Xplane. I guess the problem is that the Engines blow the air over the wings. Which means that it feels like it drops out of the sky if you put the engine to idle a little to early.
Swiss: uploads video
Me: reads title
Also me: WTF DID HE JUST COMBINED TWO AIRCRAFT??
DCH: Am I a joke to you?
Zean Pike way
“I can normally land planes pretty smoothly”
I no joke choked on my drink when he said that
The plane god has spoken.
Catto McProngles' Old Account and he said hello guys
Plane is beautiful to fly I flew it for a year 😊 it’s very powerful and never use reverse just disc, it can be tricky to land but gets the skills up, f15 easier than f35
When all you see is "I WAS FIRST!" :|
True lol
@@lathyadam2487 nice job with your username🤣
@@mikan004 thanks lol, i felt bored of my username so i made this username lol
@@ralzvy where r u from?
You were really sucking it at the beginning but you fixed with all the crashing later and then the aircraft carrier steamed over the plane....awesome work.
Swiss001: Why Pilots HATE To Fly The DHC-8 q400
Richard "Beebo" Russell: ha, hold my beer and mechanic MINUMUM WAGE! I can do flips in this bird!
Lol
RIP Richard
Swiss001: This is the main turboprop plabe that will come into people's minds
Cessna 172: am I a joke to you?
Well, the classic C172 is fitted with a piston engine. A turboprop model was released in 2015, but piston is still the most common version.
When swiss001 uploads me:...Mom let stay up
I flew with the Q400 once or you could say twice to somewhere in India ,when we landed my head almost hit the ceiling that was the WORST landing of my life well until now, it was so hard you can't even imagine
14 seconds YEAH BOIIIIII
Edit: Swiss, your voice calms me and I have loved to vids before I even had an account.
Yeeee
.
.....yup..
The 2009 crash happened 4 minutes away from where I live, and that is not how you pronounce Niagara. But great video
Everyone: Hey Swiss you uploaded late
Swiss001: Yeah that's another story
Me: *watches video*
Swiss001: We need to get to 10 minutes.
Also Swiss of camera: GIMME THE ADD-REVENUE!!!
Feuson Feuson there was no ads
6:21 did this video broke only my screen!?
No
It’s a bug in x-plane
I love watching the landing gear come down/up
You posted late but it’s 10 minutes long so I’ll except
Are u dumb he lives in germany
Stacey Baxendale uh for me he posted late he usually posts at 6:00pm for me
Oh he posts at 11:00 for me
Oh I’ll sub to u and u sub to me?
Stacey Baxendale sure
I have flown the DHC-8 q400 and I liked it it was small yes but it was comfortable the window seats are great by the engine and wing and gear but that’s my opinion
Stop insulting my big brother! But hey, I'm enjoying our relationship, Swissy! *laughs in hydraulics*
Twin Otter u are my favorite Plane
For airBaltic they have got a super good turboprop safety record (1 emergency and 0 crashes) and airBaltic does super smooth landings with this plane and the emergency was front the landing gear not coming out
When someone says turboprop, in my head suddenly appears an ATR 42 or 72. :)
For me it's the Fokker 50. First turboprop I heard of
@David Ayala Me too
For me it's twin otter and q400
So True
Facts
This things gets airborne fast, but a little turbulence had people on my flight saying prayers. Also, despite the noise suppression, ees gonna do what turboprops do, which is destroy your hearing RIP
Um... that title is offensive. A lot of pilots LOVE the q4!
Nokil Hotrun Actual Q400 driver here. No one enjoys it :D
@@skyhopp6455 I'm getting really confused when people say driver. Isn't it pilot, just asking. ;)
Love the sound of the engines, as well as those of the ATR 72! Some of the smaller ones, not so much, as they are painful on the ears.
1:48 did anyone else see the nose wheel turn?
Yup
@Cyclic Hello server mod
Hie
Cyclic You remind me of cyclic from GD
?
The only time i ever flew in an airplane i flew in croatia airlines bombardier dash 8 q400 and i was next to that gear, it was pretty nice

SAK 51106 Aviation spotter 2 Hi SAK I am Chensich#8321
Steven Chensich Oh hi!
The Saabb 340 happens to be my favorite turbo prop. The ATR 72 comes in second, and the Q400 I absolutely hate. It is quite quiet in the cabin, however zero legroom.
I think that would be the fault of the airline…
The airline decides how much leg room to provide in their cabins. It has nothing to do with the aircraft type.
Swiss 001 should do a review about the 1900D
Weirdest part is actually nose down approach on flaps 35, then you flare last second (you could also flare twice apparently)
Here in Aus all I see are Q400’s... someone pls give me an ATR 72 at least ;-;
Virgin Australia flies ATR-72s
@@carlramirez6339 It does not like solvency, sir. Even if the American bought it.
Innsbruck, they hosted the Winter Olympics twice! This plane needs some good butter. I can tell it has I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
I love the Dash 8 it's my favourite turboprop and one of my all time favourites mainly because of the look and gear cycle
Say that the DNC-8 q400 is safe but talk about how dangerous it is 😂😂
good idea's that never made it.
number 1. tail strike assembly for the dash 8 q400
