I've had this laptop for 6 years and it has been absolutely rock solid. The SSD still keeps this thing running fast, gets the latest Windows 10 updates, and the 1080p Matte display was way ahead of its time.
This is probably one of the most concise and polished reviews I've ever seen, and literally the first review that left no stone un turned. Simply Excellent in every element. Subscribed.
well the obvious winner would be the dell xps, with its premium design , awesome screen and up to par specs...I want a laptop I can do almost anything on, and with the core M in the ux305, it doesn't do it for me However, the dell xps still has some things I con's , which is why I've been looking into the dell inspiron 13 7000 the dell xps has two problems, the sweetly price price 900 model comes with 4g ram thats not upgradeable , and wanting a laptop I can grow with, that could be problem in the future The reason I'm waying over to the dell inspirion is because at 749$ I can get 8g of ram, a 1080p touchscreen and a core i5 processor , and the ram and storage is expandeble , making it somewhat future proof (to a point, no device is completely future proof) So yeah, I'm still in between the dell xps for style and the dell inspirion for particality
Slayer1111111111able you caught me at a good time because I was gonna get the current model of the ux305 soon, any idea when the better versions are coming out?
700*1,21=847 The laptop is actually cheaper in Europe. In America they don't show the value added tax in the price before buying. If you think it's to expensive in Europe blame the government. In the Netherlands the price swings between 650-750 euro.
That is quite deceiving when you say it is all metal, since the entire frame is plastic that got covered with a 0.5mm aluminium skin. That isn't the only difference between the UX305 and the macbook that causes the price difference: -The macbook has a faster SSD -The macbook has a much more accurate touchpad -The macbook has a backlit keyboard -The macbook is lighter (even though it is all aluminium) -And finally, the macbook has much better speakers.
as long as the product feels like metal most consumers wont care. SSD's in general are pertty fast i have no need from going from a 500mb/s ssd to a 1gb+/s ssd you really wont tell that much its already bloody fast. true the touchpad is much better i wont argue that however i personally dont use a touchpad all that much as i use a wireless mouse since i prefer to do so. again backlit keyboard is nice. the weight difference is not a big difference imho. and spreakers are much better again totally agree.
Rayson Viswas I don't care about ports, on my current laptop the only ports I use is charging and headphone. At this point, I have a wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard, a wireless printer, wireless internet, and using the wireless internet I have google drive as my virtual USB. If ports are REALLY that important, you could get an adapter, or a different laptop.
haloShAdOwSnIpE well thats fine if you have alot of wireless peripherals but most people do not. even with internet i prefer wired when possible over wireless just for better speeds and reliability.
nitharsan k Glad you see my point, it just really bothers me when inaccurate comparisons are made, and people think one is better than the other just because it is cheaper.
MobileTechReview I lost touch with your channel a while back and never could find it. I like your reviews. I found it by chance in the "Up Next" on an MKBHD video and yelled "YAY I FOUND HER!!!!" Keep it up.
No the next review will either be the BlackBerry Classic or the Lenovo Yoga 3 14". Avoid patterns at all costs :) But seriously, I don't see the UX305 and XPS 13 as direct competitors given the CPU difference.
MobileTechReview buuut you could do Asus Zenbook UX305 vs. Lenovo Yoga 3 11 right? Plz? Pretty pleez? There's only a few reviews of the Lenovo one on the interwebs. Anyway, keep 'em reviews coming! You do an excellent job. I really like your work.
Installed Windows 10 preview on this laptop and it runs even more smoothly then before. No graphic drivers crashing and better performance over all. I highly recommend installing it!
Akram Choudhary Than elsewhere in Europe? I'm not sure. It's tiered and depends on income. About 40% of my pay check goes to deductions each month. Then 20% of spending power goes to VAT when buying things. Then local (council) tax too. It adds up. But I think the issue here market segmentation by Asus - we don't have the 256GB option at all here, and as premium laptops tend to be a bit over-priced here, I think they've tried to price it in line with the market. Although I'll admit that business taxes and regulations are pretty complex here so make doing business in the UK expensive.
+David Barker The price of a good bears no relationship to its cost - save its production cost and not always even that. The price is based on the ability/willingness of the consumer to pay.
thank you miss Lisa for this awesome review the moment i saw it i made an order from amazon the laptop asus but with a different version ASUS UX305 Zenbook 13.3 inch Quad HD LED Notebook (Intel Core M-6Y30, Integrated Graphics, 8 GB, IPS, 128 GB, No ODD, Windows 10 (64 bit) - Metallic Black again thank you for the nice review
I have bought the asus ux305 fa version and used it for a week. I really like how light weight and portable this laptop is. It is lighter and thinner than my books. As a college student, this laptop is more than enough for me in terms of speed. I can open 7-8 tabs concurrently without lag. The screen is gorgeous for watching movies and videos. Unit is totally quiet. Battery life is alright I lasted nearly 7 hours on a normal light use. For a normal student who values portability and long battery life, I would say this is more than enough, at least for me. I don't really care for the backlit keyboard because I would be doing my work in a lighted environment anyway. The keys are nice to type on, touchpad average. The heat comes from the top of the keyboard, around the hinge area so it doesn't really bothers me. A quirk would be that the power button is right above the backspace button lol. If I were to nitpick, it would be the fingerprints on the top cover and the tiny speakers. But the laptop comes with a nice laptop bag and a cloth for you to wipe those smudges off.
My testing so far: I bought this notebook for 909€ (8gb ram, 256gb ssd, QHD+ version) and as a student it's quite decent for office stuff.. but i hoped to get more for that price. In terms of entertainment, this laptop lacks a bit for me, there are framerate drops when watching youtube in 1080p fullscreen, or livestreams in HD and that dissappointed me.. there are some other arguments against this laptop but if your expectations arent as high as mine youre good to go with this one. Other than that, this notebook is beautiful.
+Daryll Jan Dela Rosa Doesn't matter. I have spent my life between two dialects of English, believe me they call many brands different names (including Asus). Things like Nike (Nigh-kuh vs Nigh-kee), or Adidas (Ad-ee-das vs adee-dus) too.
Your videos are great, but you might wanna consider putting up the benchmark numbers on the screen, making anything of them just hearing them isn't that easy.
+Albert Chow If you are looking into this computer.... the i5 Titanium Gold version is amazing!! This is what I am currently using and it is absolutely amazing!
fightnight14 I believe they are the same battery, so no, it shouldn't be. However, the programs that require the i5 processor will suck the battery life down more than your basic web browsing that would be done on the core m. But as for the actual computer battery, it is the same.
fightnight14 Nope! What I was trying to say (sorry it came out a bit awkward sounding) is that if you were getting the i5 computer you are probably going to run programs such as Photoshop, for example. If you are getting the core m computer, then you will be doing only basic web browsing and document writing. Large programs such as Photoshop are going to suck out the battery much quicker than smaller programs such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Word. The actual computer battery is the same, and if the same operations were being performed on both computers the battery consumption would be near identical.
Sry if it sounded a bit harsh :) wasn't meant in a negative way but I agree that there are too many sacrifices in order for creating a thin device :/ (not speaking of the new macbook, that's just insane)
Hi! Love your videos and professional reviews (best reviewer by far on youtube and better than any site). You said the matte display was really good, how is it on the dell xps 13? Could you take it outside and not have issues? I would really love to not worry about glare because I have a lot of eye issues being on a computer often and im ALWAYS on a laptop, doing games, school work, reading etc. So I have gunnars that help me a lot, and I was hoping the matte helps more. Hard choice between matte and QHD.
Thanks Lisa, your videos help a lot. I've just got UX305ca with new skylake M7 and I'm lovin it. I was deciding between this laptop UX303 and HP Envy 13. Despite both UX303 and Envy 13 has more performance (i5 and i7, I got a student price for HP) but looking at all features even Envy was very tempting in terms of specs. It comes with i7 and QHD+ display and even backlit keyboard. When I get my hand on the real one I decided to go with UX305, It fells more solid despite thinner and lighter than Envy and the matte display is just gorgeous that I chose it over the QHD+ resolution. I hope you'll do a video on Envy 13 too. I would love to see what you think about it.
I would not mind seeing a smackdown with this vs the Envy x2 13 that has roughly the same specs. I know they aren't really alike, but I would be interested enough to watch. I am sure once the new macbook is out, you guys are going to do a smackdown between those two (and maybe the xps 13 for good measure).
+Dextroyfuller how has it done with programming? im looking at this now for stuff like visual studio, maxima, auto cad etc.... do you think it could run stuff like solid works ok?
It runs great! I have Ubuntu 15 on it, and working 4 terminals at once is really easy. For heavier software like VS and AutoCAD I'm not sure that it'll do as well as something more powerful, but it should be able to handle those moderately well.
Why do you say that this device's plum color is weird? My opinion, lime green would be considered weird. The plum color might be desirable for non-conformists like myself who are tired of silver, champagne & black. Color is extremely subjective. Should not be labeled weird. That being said, I love your channel and reviews.
Hi Lisa, I like your reviews, very details, thanks a lot! I had a question, the Intel Core M processor, do you think this is good enough for running Visual Studio kind of tools? Also, photoshop once in a while?
i bought one based on this review. it ws really good for the first month and then things started falling off it. 3 months later with a cracked screen, keyboad to screen lock gone and speed slowed to nothing it was finished. never experienced that on a laptop before, really cheap build.
MTR I own this unit and thought you were kinda crazy talking about the plum color. Couldn't see it. Until I went outside today in Southern California. Plum. lol
For the price point, I can completely understand why some aspects were sacrificed or simply lowered; I mean I could "complain" about no backlit key board but ehh whatever haha
Why dish out $700+tax for a PC that only has a Core M processor and no touchscreen? You might as well spend a couple hundred more and get a MacBoor Air with a Core i5.
Just a suggestion, but you should do a comparison between the New Macbook (The 12 inch Core M) and all other Core M laptops, including this one. I feel the Macbook Air is a league higher than what this laptop is, but not by much. I feel other Core M's should be the first go-to comparison
What I love about this laptop is that it has no vents underneath. The Dell does have them which to my mind makes it not a LAP-TOP, if you get my meaning. This is something rarely mentioned in reviews but for me it's a make or break. I'm looking for a replacement for my Lenovo U300s and this seems to be the one. My only concern is that it looks like it doesn't have a delete key. Does it or doesn't it? Help! The delete key is one reason a pc is BETTER than a Mac. Oh yeah!
$699 crosses a threshold where I would expect a backlit keyboard. Not having backlit keyboard is only acceptable on ultra cheap sub $400 laptops that people buy based only on price.
this laptop is quite pricey in my country. mine heats so quick, and when it heats the speakers goes "bzzttt bzzzttt" everytime i play music or watch videos. the battery life is so so.
The base model available in my country is the one with only 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD. Can this be upgraded to 8GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD? Great review, btw.
This is a very nice laptop but you will have to adjust the display to get it's ultra-crisp screen, that is because the display out of the factory is clocked at minimum, but thankfully Asus has included Intel HD graphics software which will adjust the display to bright retina HD levels. I found the laptop very responsive and fast, initially that wasn't the case as there was a lot of asus bloatware in the start up menu, but once I disabled the non essential items from start up, the laptop literally switches on to the sign-in screen in 2 seconds. Also most laptops can be made to perform faster if non -essential programmes are disabled from running in the background. I did just that and have attained the speed of an intel i5 on this laptop. I wasn't always a fan of Matte screens and this comes with one but I've found the colours to be excellent for a matte screen and quite vibrant, once again thanks to the display adjustment offered by the intel graphics HD card. It's a great alternative to a Macbook air or any of the more expensive windows fare out there.
Nice review. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop and was just thinking if my budget was about 1000$ what would you recommend? Are there better ultrabooks around than this Asus one?
I own the UX305FA myself, just with a 128GB SSD (which is more than sufficient for me) and I'm flashed about it. Nice display, good keyboard, it just gets got, but that's ok. With all the notebooks and laptops on the market this one is a really good choice :)
Heya Lisa, I know the new over-priced MacBook makes this unit look real interesting. As a lifelong Mac user since 1986 I threw up my hands at Apple greed and decided to try one of these as a secondary computer. In a nutshell: it's going back. The unit is fantastic. The hardware is to die for. The build is really something. And when you pointed out the plum I only got more excited. My return has nothing to do with the unit. It's the Windows thing. I simply can't believe the crap Windows expects people to live with. Volume up and down keys that require the function key to function. Same with brightness. This is 2015. Not 1999. How about that I transferred files to this unit via iCloud and each time I open one it sends a box up asking me if I'm sure I want to open a document from the web. It has a box to click to be rid of this annoying message -- but checking the box doesn't work. I verified via Google it's not just me. The fix? An absurd amount of coding. Or how also about a touch keyboard icon that keeps appearing in the taskbar. It has a 'dismiss' button and it doesn't take either. Searched Google -- I'm not the only one and the fix is equally absurd. This isn't a Kool Aid thing. Honest. Not everything works on a Mac. But there's so much more that does it leaves this sorry operating system in the dust. If Linux were ready for prime time, I'd simply install Linux. It's nearly there. I really really really wanted this unit to work... but apparently Windows doesn't feel the same way.
Flawless review!, I'm in love with this laptop, but for the price which do you prefer?, the new surface 3 atom x7 128/4gb ($700 with the keyboard and stylus with the student discount) or the UX305?
So with a non removable battery, what happens in the event the battery does die? Are you boned and left w/ what is essentially a desktop that has too be plugged in all the time?
Hi, I was just wonder if this laptop could run league if legends in medium to low settings. I am interested in getting a new laptop and I love the price of the zenbook. I am not looking for a gaming pc, but I was wondering if this would be ok for some casual gaming
It is interesting that in your reviews being technical, there is no mention of security strength and flaws specially after international scoops over mass surveillance by governments and implantation of spying hardware and software onboard of new gadgets. This is the most important aspect of any tool like laptops, smartphones etc. If it is possible please add these measures in your future reviews. Thank you.
I don't know if this is just me, but I can't get past how plain it looks compared to other Asus laptops. I love Asus. Normally they have great designs and I know this one is cheaper and there's definitely a trade-off but it's just so boring for an Asus.
asus laptops are trully amazing. I now have 2 of them. one thats 6 years old still working even though i broke the screen and keyboard. and a new one which is 1 year old. i must say the materials that they use now feel cheaper than what they used to have before but still they make reliable laptops and thats all i care about. i never wanted to pump money into a laptop like apple macbook. plus windows is still the boss. i never really liked mac os.
I've had this laptop for 6 years and it has been absolutely rock solid. The SSD still keeps this thing running fast, gets the latest Windows 10 updates, and the 1080p Matte display was way ahead of its time.
Got my asus Zenbook u430 with i7 mx150 for 200€ last year
This is probably one of the most concise and polished reviews I've ever seen, and literally the first review that left no stone un turned. Simply Excellent in every element. Subscribed.
I was just , just going to look for a review of this laptop so I can compare it to the dell xps 13 2015....crazy timing Lisa
Me too
So what was your conclusion :P.
I'm interesting in both and can't decide and i watched both reviews haha
well the obvious winner would be the dell xps, with its premium design , awesome screen and up to par specs...I want a laptop I can do almost anything on, and with the core M in the ux305, it doesn't do it for me
However, the dell xps still has some things I con's , which is why I've been looking into the dell inspiron 13 7000
the dell xps has two problems, the sweetly price price 900 model comes with 4g ram thats not upgradeable , and wanting a laptop I can grow with, that could be problem in the future
The reason I'm waying over to the dell inspirion is because at 749$ I can get 8g of ram, a 1080p touchscreen and a core i5 processor , and the ram and storage is expandeble , making it somewhat future proof (to a point, no device is completely future proof)
So yeah, I'm still in between the dell xps for style and the dell inspirion for particality
jp kurokami I would still wait for the better versions of the ux305. This is the base model here.
Slayer1111111111able you caught me at a good time because I was gonna get the current model of the ux305 soon, any idea when the better versions are coming out?

In the Netherlands the price swings between 650-750 euro.
wistals3deniks you're kidding me right....you do know you have that exchange rate backwards don't you? xD
Google it, $700= €658.58, not €847
wistals3deniks But i didn't realise that they don't show value added tax in america thats rather interesting actually:D
Mohammed Ahmed
It's not the same in each state. In some it's 0% but in others it can be around 10%. Still a lot less then 21%.
yeah it is less than Twenny waun for sure.! :3 Wow thx man you learn something new everyday :)

Netbooks are back!! :)
It's a thin NetBook though. And chrome books are more NetBooky to me.
do you know where I can find a good chrome os guide/walkthrough? It's still a big question mark to me..
Don't underestimate the power of framerate drop. It makes average mac user buy a new machine after 1-2 years.
I just ordered one of these! Thanks for the review Lisa, it really helped me.
Let me guess the next video Asus zen book vs xps 13, not that I don't think you should do it I just see a pattern.

Review the HP Spectre x360 next :)
As usual, the reviews you do are fantastic. I have my heart set on this machine.
yeah, fuck us in Europe again... For 699EUR you can get only with a 128gb SSD
Artūrs Kašs You think you've got it bad? The 128GB model is £650 in the UK (so €915). Ouch.
David Barker doesn't the uk have lower income tax though ?

I'm wondering if this computer would be good for light gaming and school? Like league of legends and maplestory? Thanks!
Yes although you may experience problems with typing, but still a must for *light* gaming and skool.

Thanks for the review, I am considering this ultrabook as my next home machine and got a lot of information out of this video.
700$ Sent me a link where i can buy it!
was hoping you'd review this, great review as always
is this laptop good for heavy editing(photoshop?,3D animation etc) ? i'm majoring in graphic design and my friends mostly use macbook air .. lol
This has the Intel core M so No. You should get at least a i5 cpu
I'm really liking this notebook with its matte screen.
what i hate about pc laptops, mine included, are the stupid stickers on the palm rest.
its 2015, who the heck wants stickers in their machines!?
Markh Castelo The Dell XPS 13 had it right. Only one sticker on the palm rest. I wish all ultrabooks were like that one.
Yeah, it’s impossible to peel stickers off. Can’t be done.
Love your laptop reviews. Seriously good and in-depth. Thanks!
that screen is akward...
The camera is ugly too
The screen is one of the best
I still have this laptop and 😀 IT STILL WORKS GREAT! 😀
can it run photoshop CS6 or any of Adobe programs without problems?
Yes.
thanks for the reply!
Nice of them to include a screen with those bezels.
Hehe
im just like omg is it really pronounced Ah-sus? not Ae-sus?
Depends where you're from. I call it ay-sus

Can I play minecraft on it?

I want to play The Witcher with max. settings on it.

First time I encounter this channel.. wow, very nice content.
I wish reviewers would stop scaring people about the core m chip. It is more than 99% people need and the Skylake Core M is out now.
what the hell happened to essential ethernet ports?
There is a usb -> Ethernet adapter in the box
a dongle...really? It's like when they phased out keyboards on cell phones,
You've never seen one ? It's nothing new, almost all ultrabooks don't have a physical ethernet connector.
dude, all i'm saying is they are phasing out some pretty essential stuff....There is also no dvd drive.
Sry if it sounded a bit harsh :) wasn't meant in a negative way but I agree that there are too many sacrifices in order for creating a thin device :/ (not speaking of the new macbook, that's just insane)

Could you take it outside and not have issues? I would really love to not worry about glare because I have a lot of eye issues being on a computer often and im ALWAYS on a laptop, doing games, school work, reading etc. So I have gunnars that help me a lot, and I was hoping the matte helps more. Hard choice between matte and QHD.
i like lisa gade reviews it's nayyss :D
Lisa, you provide a nice, thorough review as always. Any idea if or when you will review the new Asus Zenbook Flip variant UX360CA?
Love this. This touch screen trend on laptops... need to STAHP!!!
outstanding review
just got this laptop! loving it :D
Great Review. Planning to get the version with i5.
Definitely sexier than the new MacBook can ever be !
It was my impression that core M is not for tablets but rather specifically for fanless ultra books, and is competative with i3-low level i5.
I like your reviews
I would not mind seeing a smackdown with this vs the Envy x2 13 that has roughly the same specs. I know they aren't really alike, but I would be interested enough to watch. I am sure once the new macbook is out, you guys are going to do a smackdown between those two (and maybe the xps 13 for good measure).
very nice review, I loved it
if you guys want a true lightweight device, wait for the Lenovo-NEC hz550 to come out in May. Core i5, numerous ports, and weight of 1.74 pounds.
I love the spech and price of this asus. Is such a beautiful laptop
Still faster than any laptop I've ever owned. I hope this works well for me as a programming station; 1920x1080 sounds perfect for multitasking.
Dextroyfuller thanks!
I would chose this over a new Macbook in a heartbeat.
Why do you say that this device's plum color is weird? My opinion, lime green would be considered weird. The plum color might be desirable for non-conformists like myself who are tired of silver, champagne & black. Color is extremely subjective. Should not be labeled weird. That being said, I love your channel and reviews.
I'm from Brazil. Great vídeo
one of the best features on the macbook for me is the 16:10 aspect ratio.
i love her review, the way she talk is great, if she was a teacher, her studebt will pay attention to her.
Hi Lisa, I like your reviews, very details, thanks a lot! I had a question, the Intel Core M processor, do you think this is good enough for running Visual Studio kind of tools? Also, photoshop once in a while?
MobileTechReview nice review Lisa..thanks...is there a touchscreen version of this same particular model? If so, will there a review for it?
thanks...gonna buy this thing next week :)
Wow, that's a huge lower bezel! Glad to see Asus have moved away from the two-point hinge though, that was a nightmare.
i bought one based on this review. it ws really good for the first month and then things started falling off it. 3 months later with a cracked screen, keyboad to screen lock gone and speed slowed to nothing it was finished. never experienced that on a laptop before, really cheap build.
Hi Lisa. Thanks for the review. Was curious if you noticed any coil whine? Some online forums have stated it's annoyance...
+Thomas Li I don't have that problem on my unit but might be possible problem on others
Great review. Any chance you will be reviewing the 2015 Chromebook Pixel ?
MTR
I own this unit and thought you were kinda crazy talking about the plum color. Couldn't see it. Until I went outside today in Southern California. Plum. lol
For the price point, I can completely understand why some aspects were sacrificed or simply lowered; I mean I could "complain" about no backlit key board but ehh whatever haha
I love your review, Can you make the review for Chromebook pixel 2015?
Mine comes tomorrow!
Oh yeah!
The ux305LA is just $50 more and is much better in terms of hardware and battery life. Im actually sending my UX305FA back to get one.
Do you think you will have a review of the Asus Zenbook pro ux501 anytime soon, looks really enticing to me!
I own the UX305FA myself, just with a 128GB SSD (which is more than sufficient for me) and I'm flashed about it. Nice display, good keyboard, it just gets got, but that's ok. With all the notebooks and laptops on the market this one is a really good choice :)
Tell me more about it. Will it handle Sony Vegas?
RandomJoshYT That... I really don't know. But it's more of a business device than a heavy load machine.
Michael is the UX305FA worth it? I'm needing a laptop for school and I've been looking at that laptop
Christina Tran For schoolwork it's worth it. If you look for a machine for hard core games, then go with a different model.
Heya Lisa,
I know the new over-priced MacBook makes this unit look real interesting.
This is the prettiest laptop I've ever seen omq
Hi, I was just wonder if this laptop could run league if legends in medium to low settings. I am interested in getting a new laptop and I love the price of the zenbook. I am not looking for a gaming pc, but I was wondering if this would be ok for some casual gaming
Kinda reminds me of the Macbook Air, From the screen to the keyboard if you think about it.
can we expect a comparison between this and new macbook in future
It is interesting that in your reviews being technical, there is no mention of security strength and flaws specially after international scoops over mass surveillance by governments and implantation of spying hardware and software onboard of new gadgets. This is the most important aspect of any tool like laptops, smartphones etc. If it is possible please add these measures in your future reviews. Thank you.
I have this laptop . Clicking is annoying and low microphone. Screen is not the best . But good look and not heavy specially for school
Girlfriend is going to school for engineering, would this laptop be a good choice for AutoCAD and other drafting applications?
If they had the same price and you had to pick one would you pick Asus zenbook ux305 or Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus ?
Okay so the performance isn't very good, but is this laptop good enough to be a nice development laptop for web development?
