I was once a passenger in one of these for a 6 hour journey, and it was supremely comfortable. Unfortunately the brakes failed about half an hour in, but we survived using only the gearbox and the handbrake to slow us down. Fantastic car.
That's a proper landy experience haha
@@TedwardDrives They’ll always hold a soft spot in my heart. First car I ever drove (or steered at least) was my grandfather’s Series 3 LR, and then Discos have always been in the family for shooting and fishing trips. There’s no spot in the British countryside we couldn’t reach in those beasts.
you drove 5.5 hours with no brakes ? 😮
Oh my 😳
I was just about to reply half Into reading the comment asking how it Didn't break down on that journey🤣🤣🤣
33 years later it still looks fantastic. The 1st generation Land Rover Range Rover is a truly gorgeous vehicle.
Still looks fantastic, huh? Cut the crap
@@jjr1728 that's exactly what it's like today
As the previous owner of this car 2016 - 2018 here in sunny San Diego. I sold this and moved on to a Bahama Gold 1975 Range Rover. Although I now have my dream car, I have very fond memories of this one, it was a great example and I am so happy to see this video!! Congrats on keeping it as it was, and for continuing to take such good care of it. I truly enjoyed my ownership, and it’s heartwarming to see it continue through life as a true survivor.
Pride of ownership. Beautiful car sir, thank you for preserving it.
i miss SD (and TJ lol)
I always love these odd shapes things lol. I’m young but back in the 80’s 90’s range rovers had their cool thing going on
I owned EXACTLY the same car 20 years ago 🙂
I loved that the side windows reach almost to the thighs.
You drive high up and like in a glass house - just wonderful, no other car offers this driving experience !
Now this is a finisher car! A chariot of Gods... the Golden God!!!
@Nicholas McGee BE GONE VILE MAN BE GONE FROM ME!
@@ishaanhomie😂?
this first generation of range rover is really stunning. thats a britsh icon made to live for ever. nice review man.
old car visibility is something else...that driving position is amazing!!
As the owner of a 1990 Range Rover 3.9 Vogue, and the fourth owner in its driving history, I have to admit the pleasure of driving it on any road. It's a love that increases every day when you look over at other vehicles at a stoplight and notice that V8 purr.
It is a car that requires some care (like any machine, as you say) and needs periodic fluid changes and checking "English" electrical connections.
It's my first car since I got a driver's license at 18, and I don't want another one in my life. I also have a P38 4.6 Vogue but they are different things. The P38 resembles a comfortable, tall but otherwise finer-looking passenger car. The Classic offers the perception of a military tank on a V8 and on its 4 soft suspension springs that make your trip a cozy dance.
In the 12 years that it has been in my house, I have only put new exhaust catalysts, lamba probes and now I have to change the CV on the front axle because I NEVER greased those fundamental parts on this 4x4. The viscous of the Borg Warner must also be watched, which usually dies before the age of 20 years. But except for that, maintenance and love. They appreciate it. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO! GREETINGS FROM SPAIN.
Thank You for your video. I am the owner of a 1992 V8 3.9 "Ardennes Green" which frame was fully restored back in 2019. Your conclusion is right on spot as we only used it for our vacation Normandy house. The ride is smooth thanks to the V8. The only (main) downside is the gas consumption. I average 20 liters/100km (12MPG) in Urban conditions and 15 liters/100km (16MPG) on highways. Mechanically, the engine is very strong, so is the transmission. A few electric issues proper to British cars from time to time such as the electric window motors and the alternator "small" belt. Still, this is a great classic. I LOVE IT !
Love the gentle V8 sound;)
Too bad for the viscous fan playing his song at full volume, an electric fan swap is common practice.
@@TheAndre8900 in my opinion engine driven fans belong on diesel trucks and buses.
Love your content. Everything I wanna know about a car literally gets answered by you. The sound quality is amazing aswell. Keep It up. The range rover is sick aswell
Thank you so much for this
The door closing sounds were perfect in this one, pure ASMR
“You can actually drive very comfortably from the back seat” 😂😂😂 the comfort overwhelmed his thought process
The Range Rover was a true icon and although it isn't the most dynamic of cars, when you consider the original design dates back to the 1960s, it's pretty impressive. How many new models these days last for more than a couple of seasons. I actually rode in one of the originals as a kid in the 70s and later travelled in a later model similar to the one you drive here and it was very much as you describe. Thanks once again for bringing us something different and interesting.
the driving position is so good original and simple we can see all the road corners.
1989 owner here, manual transmission 3.9. Love my classic RR.
I absolutely LOVE this car. Classy and classic. And it's a real Land Rover too, meaning it can literally go anywhere. Not a stupid suv.
i still off-road my 2013 range rover sport with AT tires. still a very capable vehicle
Best driving position of anything I've ever owned sit up high with a low belt line for the glass, and yes the fuel consumption is absolutely savage !
I remember my first ever experience with a classic Range Rover as an American kid. My dad had a client who was often out of town and requested my dad to take his cars for a drive from time to time to keep the fluids from going stale. He had one identical to this one (these green rims too). This one time he takes me with him to take the Range Rover Classic and the one thing I couldn’t get out of my head was how quirky and unusual this vehicle was. It really caught my memory.
I own a Range Classic ( 1994 with 200tdi engine ) and I use it as daily driver.
Best daily car I have ever had. Even if it is noisy, smells the oil and gazole, the charm is above everything and i love it ! :D
Wow, there is a ton of glass on this car. I didn't realize it until seeing the view from the driver's seat - there is a lot of visibility.
It’s the lack of A-Pillar due to no airbags etc. just look how thin the window surrounds are. Another reason these things were king on safari. Visibility was insane!
I miss the large glasshouse of older cars.
It's quite the Popemobile!
That is just lovely. These have aged soo well!
Lol lovely is such a good way to describe this car
What a absolutely GORGEOUS car thank you so much for the review! I want one! Hello from Finland! 😊
It's funny how this zf 4hp behaves exactly like my e28 did (or is it because it shares the same box ..). It works very well with torquey engines, it's quite smooth I liked it a lot around town. This Range is very well preserved, perfect time capsule !
The interior looks very symmetrical, so your theory about the Left/Right Hand Drive seems to make sense!
My dad drove a '93 in factory Aegean Blue. The engine noise with that slight whirr takes me back. Still get a little teary-eyed when I look at the giant oil stain in my folks garage, what an iconic truck
A transporter of gods, the GOLDEN GOD
The Rover V8 was based on the 60's Buick Nailhead and lasted until 2002 with the P38A Range. Started as 3.5 carb then a 3.5 injection and along a 3.9 injection. Then the 3.5 was bored to 4.0 litre and the 3.9 was upgraded to 4.6 litre at 225 was the top powerhouse.
It lasted up to 2004 with the discovery 2
The reason the fuel filler door is so large is because the door was added at some point when it needed to be more modern. Original RRC had no door as it was more utilitarian. On the last couple years they moved the fuel filler and added a smaller more appropriate size door.
Would love one of these. My next door neighbor daily’d one in the early ‘00s. I didn’t think it was special at the time.
Nostalgic feeling
Watching and listening to this video reminds me of looking over the bus driver's shoulder in a Thomas school bus as a kid!
I'd love to see you drive a P38 range rover, the 4.6 V8's are really quite something. Sure they aren't as interesting as this old beast, but still have their quirks and british features!
A friend of mine has a gorgeous Yellow one. I'll see what I can do
Thank you for this great video. I'd recognise the start up sound of a first-gen Range Rover anywhere. So happy you got to drive it and share the joy of doing so with us. It's a really cool SUV, and it's my favourite type.
A true finisher car
A transporter of gods
“You can drive very comfortably in the backseat” lol 3:30
Great video man......had a good time watching. 👍👍Keep it up, you'll always have my support!! Love from India❤️❤️
Thank You Shounak!
JLR should offer some kinda heritage/retro design edition on the new ones that mimics this look. Maybe through SVO or something
Nice car. Lots of switchgear identical to my dad's Austin Montego from back in the day
Wow.. I would choose old land rovers over anything. Beautiful machines
I know nothing about cars yet this was great to watch. Very clear and informative. Filming felt very cathartic also.
Such a sweet truck! That is the best the color combo!
My uncle had a 3rd generation Range Rover (L322) and it was black. I vaguely remember riding in it, but it was a cool vehicle. It had a drink refrigerator in the back! I remember he always seemed to have window problems with it. Also I own a birth year car. A Mercedes C Class W202 from 2000.
Always associate these with my childhood - my close friend's mother had a 1990 i the same colour, with a manual box, which she could hustle along really very quickly - there's a bit a knack to driving them. She's still alive today, and drives an L322.
Mine was a 1987 in silver, she is still on the road with a new owner, I kind of regret selling it. Awesome off roader and you feel great after a long day of 4x4. Generally reliable the ZF box is strong as is the transfer case, I think in 89 they went to a Borg Warner case that would fail. Mine also had the 2" lift on coil springs, gave it great axle articulation. The seat controls are from a Mercedes, problem with the location is the controls would get full of gunk due to their location. A yearly cleaning kept them trouble free.
Great video! Greetings from England🙂
Nothing says 80’s car like a cigarette lighter for the kids in rear lol!
Start em young
I love so much the "rustic" look of the old RR. The new ones are too posh and refined, too much "perfect"!
I have the 1992 3.9 litre range rover.
Great wagon which still has ample power for every day use.
this better than new
What a beauty
Even today this looks timeless. No surprise why even after 40+ years later Range Rovers are still one of the most sought after luxury SUVs in the market.
If only they sorted out the chronic reliability problems, I would definitely consider one.
Ugh these wheels are amazing
Love my 1994 RRC County LWB, also have 2 1993 Volvo 240’s in wagon and sedan 😁
This car is so cool.
Your content is so great.
Thank You Ross!
A Land Rover for strange people....a Strange Rover... (I will see myself out)
Thank you for your service
2:31
I imagine that the fuel filler flap is so large so that the top and bottom of it blends into the swage line of the car,
Awesome vid! 🔥🔥
The steering wheel looks exactly the same as FJ62/HJ61 Land Cruiser! 😮
What a visibility
Perfect for taking over the river and through the woods, where a large meal of roasted fowl et cetera awaits.
A transporter of Gods!
The Golden God!
If the brakes are needing that much effort I think they may need some servicing. The brakes on my classic although it is a 1990 are very sharp. Also the viscous fan zaps a little bit of power, though not much to be fair. Unless the outside temp was very high that day, it sounds like the viscous fan on that car needs replacing. Gorgeous condition though and great POV thanks !
First Generation Range Rover's where built to last
My favorite Range Rover color
Interior is so airy.great cruiser
My favourite car ever
This is the OG Midlands made Range Rover. My grandad worked for Land Rover and had one and sold it before I was born, 3.5 litre Fuel injected automatic. My grandad used to say it was soo comfortable with The interior but there was a lot of problems with it mechanically and sometimes electrically. Nonetheless it is a nice car to look at.
I know that you usually dont ask this when owning a "truck" like this, but whats the average fuel consumption?
Im glad the one I crashed into with my bicycle years ago (it was parked) didn't have those guards cause my shoulder would have shattered instead of the tail light haha
See the Osv pass to cape poge in Martha’s Vineyard, proper vehicle for that task
As comfortable as a hunting lodge and just as huge. Give it up for The Rover V8! This Landy was nicknamed "Chelsea Tractor." Most owners would go to the shops with the kids and never dare go off road.
😂
Still remember watching Exit Wounds (2001), one of these getting destroyed in a crash. Felt bad that Mulcahy (Jill Hennessy) got killed in the process.
They wea not lazy one side is for low transfer and the other is for hi on the gear selector
Hy bro nice drive and cool surrounding, where from u
You really sound like Harvey specter ngl
This car is in the same colour of my jaguar xj40, and has the same engine of my saloon Rover P6 3500.
That's in very good condition as they were well known for being unreliable rust buckets here in the UK as well as every other rover car we made (except the joint Honda variants).
So beauty design all of a car. God!
I own one from 1996 classic , 300 TD , and wont sell for anything , mine havent been in a mechanic for 22 years straight , last year i had a diesel run and engine blow up , after buying new engine its ready for more 22 years without mechanic
I had the exact same year model in 1996. Blew the head gasket… what a nightmare lol. That said it was nowhere near as bad as the 1989 Defender 90/Ninety I finished restoring last year… when they work they’re awesome. Savor those moments.
I wish I could drive this car.
first! love ur vids man, keep up the great work
Thank you!
i need this car.
rear mud flaps are on backwards
8:09 "somewhat reliable" - I laughed so hard...
Nice
The US spec versions just don't look right with those all amber lenses at the front...
I’ve been on the hunt for one for a while now surprisingly can’t find any rust free rovers in Texas and when you do people want 25k for ones pushing 200k hopefully I find one some day at a reasonable price the hype has drove up the prices and people with bad examples think for some reason that means theirs is worth a lot 😂
I have 6 of them, I’ll sell you one.
Nice! Have you also driven the 2003 model yet?
My dream car 😢
How much?
Sorry to be THAT person, but that’s pronounced “pembrOOke” 😅.
Anyways, gosh this thing is amazing! 😍
The days before they all came in black and tried to be sports cars parked on suburban streets. The OG Rangie.
the only real Range Rover.
I want one... again
gonna have to blur the speedo for this haha
😂
14:13 My MR2 is from '97 and I'm also from '97 :D
There must be something wrong with it, cause it acts better than this with full throttle. Great video anyway
